MORSELS FROM THE EDITOR Something is happening in the Gables that is making people sit up and take notice. No, I am not talking about the Alice Aycock sculptures in the Segovia Circles or the multi-million dollar streetscape renovation on Miracle Mile and Giralda Avenue, although they are certainly worthy of our attention.

SCENES FROM OUR CHAMBER’S NEW YEAR’S NETWORKER 2017

I am referring to the positive vibe and inspiring energy that is coming from the newest hotspot in our City Beautiful – Copper 29 Bar. That’s right, we have a bonafide hotspot in Coral Gables!

I gathered a group of friends on a recent Saturday night and decided to see what everyone was talking about. So, after a great meal on the Mile, we walked a few blocks over to Copper 29 and found a crowd of all ages enjoying amazing dance music, yummy bites and of course, liquid libations. We ordered a round of Moscow Mules for our crew and joined in the packed house fun.

To say the place is sexy is an understatement – from the people to the décor to the sparklers shooting above your drink - everyone is having a good time. They even blast you with ice cold CO2 to help you cool your jets as the night heats up. The bartenders, all imports from the owners’ native Greece, are at the top of their game and want you to enjoy your time at Copper 29 as much as they enjoy making your drinks.

And though the crowd comes and goes during the evening, their impact is felt in such a positive way. Even the macaron company next store now stays open until midnight to accommodate revelers seeking to satisfy their late-night sugar fix.

All of this excitement is a prelude to something much bigger – including a third location and concept featuring craft tacos designed by Copper 29’s ownership group (who also own Crema across the street) that will open a few doors down very soon.

My biggest take-away is that the Gables is getting a bit more hip for late night and while we do not currently allow nightclubs or bars only, Copper 29 is a happy medium offering a menu of options and a nice change of pace to a quiet main street that rolls up its sidewalks as soon as the last supper is served. Way to go gentlemen. Συγχαρητήρια!

As we wrap-up our second year and eighth issue of Let’s Eat Magazine, it has been an amazing run so far. With Jessica Wilcox’s tenacity and aplomb, we have seen our magazine nearly grow in size thanks to our advertisers and our partners. We have unveiled our own offiicial website with more content under the leadership of Cindi Avila, Green Goddess Public Relations and look for us to re-launch our Let’s Eat Dinner Series in the coming months as a number of new concepts find their way to the Gables that we will feature.

This latest issue revolves around coffee, that magical little mystery bean that helps wake up the world each morning and contributes to our mood, productivity and of course, our overall digestive health. While I have never been a coffee drinker, I am a coffee admirer – I love it when they infuse it into savory dishes or even chocolate - and we have some of the best locations in the Gables for gathering and gabbing over a cup of hot java. From Café Curuba to Café Demetrio, to down under with Threefold Café, there is something for every palate, budget, proximity and pace. Take a deeper dive into a cup of joe with us this month as we explore all things coffee.

How does a little coffee talk sound?

In this case it’s coffee, conversation and a little friendly competition. Andrew Giambarba is holding coffee meet-ups around Miami and Nick Sharp, the owner of Threefold Café, is holding coffee competitions. We got a chance to talk to them about how their events percolate. Here’s their “unfiltered” conversation.

Andrew: Can you tell us what the meet-ups are all about?

It’s just about a delicious cup of coffee; specialty coffee doesn’t have to be complicated. We wanted people to taste coffee that wasn’t roasted heavily (bitter) and that could be drunk without needing sugar or cream. We also wanted people to get information. If they wanted to know about the relationships with growers, how coffee is imported and roasted, different brewing methods, what makes one origin different from another, all of that could be addressed. What mattered most was celebrating delicious coffee.

Andrew: What locations have you held these at in Coral Gables and who attends?

So far we’ve held them at Threefold Café and Cafe Curuba. Others were held outside of the Gables. We wanted to make sure to highlight the spots where specialty coffee is being served in Miami. Absolutely anyone who wants to can attend; they’re free!

Nick: Tell us about your coffee competitions.

It’s a latte art competition. We had support and sponsorship from most of the local specialty coffee shops.

With this sponsorship, each shop was given one entry into the latte art competition. For everyone else, we held an instant knockout wild card round for the last positions to fill our bracket round along with the sponsor competitors.

The competition was judged by Ryan Hall (Coffee industry guru, ‘Brothers and Brawlers’), Daren Berlin (National coffee roaster: Counter Culture) and Evan Benn (Editor-In-Chief: INDULGE Magazine).

Nick: How did you pick a winner?

Competitors compete two at a time in a bracket-style competition. A barista pulls their shots and they steam their milk and do their latte art. The coffee is then passed to the counter where the three judges pick the winner based on best design, cleanest, most symmetrical and highest execution skill.

Michelle Hopper from Switchbox Coffee Roasters in Ft. Lauderdale took the $2,000 top prize, $300 went to the 2nd place barista and the rest went to charity.

Nick says another latte art competition is set for December. As for the coffee meet-ups, Andrew hopes you’ll follow his Instagram account @nowbrewing.coffee for news on the next meet-up.

What are 4 different ways Off the Mile appeals to its patrons?

We're a family owned restaurant with Cuban, Spanish and Italian influences. We offer homemade meals using recipes from grandma's hand-written cookbooks. In fact, we bring grandma in a couple times a month to ensure we're keeping with tradition.

Service is key. Our staff has been with us since inception. We run our restaurant like an extension of our family. We treat our staff and customers like family. Finally, we're "Off The Mile" and we're proud to offer home cooked dishes at reasonable prices.

You are from Miami, but what 4 places in the world influence your menu and cooking?

My mother is Cuban and my father is Spanish so Cuba and Spain are my two biggest cultural influences when it comes to food. Of course, being half Cuban also helps me embrace all Caribbean cuisine, as well. It wasn't until I spent a month in Italy that I truly embraced their cuisine. From seafood to pastas, Italians are at the top of my cultural cuisine list. From the daily handpicking of vegetables and herbs to their love for cured meats and fresh fish, Italian cuisine is my passion.

There is nothing like a fresh piece of fish!

Fresh meats are also a must on any menu.

Since everything we make is from scratch, we pride ourselves on locally sourcing fruits and vegetables when available. It's what my grandmothers did when cooking for us at home and you can taste the difference.

Pulpo a la Milla: Featuring grilled octopus; it's a process to prepare this dish and also to cook. Not everyone can master this dish and I enjoy the challenge Black Bean Soup: This soup is a labor of love Beef Carpaccio: Beginning by selecting the freshest Angus tenderloin and thru the preparation process, it's definitely in my top five items to prepare simply to see our customer's reactions to the combination of flavors

What are 4 reasons you chose to open your restaurant in Coral Gables?

I believe Coral Gables is the Mecca for food in South Florida. There are so many great restaurants to enjoy. We have some of the best restaurants in the US right here in The City Beautiful and we wanted to be a part of it! We felt there was a need for home cooked dishes that would remind our customers of their childhood. We want to take our customers back in time when their abuela would cook for them.

Best Wine South Florida in America

is in

Over 850 of the country’s best wines made their way to South Florida as we celebrated the 10th annual American Fine Wine Invitational and Gala. This event takes place over the early months of 2017 and showcases top American winemakers and labels, whose wines are judged blindly by 24 nationally-renowned industry professionals. One of the differentiating factors that separates this competition from others is that winemakers must be invited to enter their wines, maintaining their exclusivity as the largest American-only Invitational and Gala in the world.

The American Fine Wine Invitational and Gala (AFWI) began in 2007 as the brainchild of three wine professionals who pooled their many years of experience and broad range of wine talents together to create a unique, first-class competition in South Florida. Shari Gherman, a Miami native, is President and co-founder of the AFWI, along with Monty & Sara Preiser, who both have extensive backgrounds in the wine industry as judges, wine writers and most recently, publishers of The Preiser Key, a comprehensive guide to Napa Valley & Sonoma wineries and restaurants.

Together, they organized a months-long series of events that have grown to become the largest competition open only to fine wines produced in the United States. This year’s wine judging took place over a two-day period at Florida International University’s Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management located in North Miami .

Medals from Bronze to Double Gold were awarded to the wines, with official results released several days after the judging.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the competition is not necessarily how many top-notch wines are judged blindly by a “dream team” of industry professionals, but the fact that the AFWI has raised thousands of dollars for South Florida charities each year since its inception. A different local charity is selected to be the recipient of proceeds raised from all the events surrounding the Invitational and Gala auction each AFWI season.

This year’s Charity Wine Gala is on Saturday, April 29th and supports the Dolphins Cancer Challenge. The Gala is open to the public and offers an exclusive opportunity for South Florida wine-os to get up-close and personal with award-winning winemakers and wines.
