PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVE: HOP, SKIP, JUMP... LEAP! Mark A. Trowbridge, President & CEO Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce Mtrowbridge@coralgableschamber.org

F

or many of us, 2011 could not end fast enough. While things began to recover slowly on the economic front in the final quarter of the year, it was not fast enough to satisfy our collective desires or meet the expectations we set forth back in January. We are impatient and beyond tired of waiting for things to improve in this country with unemployment levels, consumer confidence and lagging wages. Yes, there were some bright spots as we saw companies begin to hire, people heading back to work, unemployment under 10% and even a plethora of new company openings. The Chamber also had its best year since 2007, with 215 new members (an 8% increase in new member commitments over the prior year), a retention rate of nearly 75% and a small budget surplus after a break-even year! All of this happened because of you…our members…and your engagement in the Chamber. You remained committed to our mission and helped us navigate some very challenging times even as you were dealing with your own worries. So, we endeavor to put the last few years in the rear view mirror…and speed away at a clip…glancing back furtively just to ensure that the past is truly in the past. I, for one, am much more optimistic about 2012 than I have been in some time about a new year rising. Maybe it is because 2012 has an extra day in it where only good things will happen…Leap Day, February 29th! Now, the Irish claim that a woman can ask a man to marry her only on Leap Day, which occurs once every four years. This tradition seems

a bit old-fashioned, but I am game…and available. But, if you really read between the lines, this just means that one has to plan ahead and take advantage of special and rare opportunities, including ones that are unseen and unknown to us. I think that Leap Year adds a connotation of energy to the equation – the body and mind in perpetual motion, never satisfied, never complete, never giving in. It is an opportunity to get fired up, to get focused, and to get to work on your goals for the year. Sure, it may be easier to just take the road more travelled and just wait idly by for things to happen. But, wouldn’t you rather set your sights higher and follow a path that has both greater risk and reward? I would. And do. Taking the proverbial leap often times means not knowing what is beneath you, catapulting oneself across the abyss unaware of the potential danger and pitfalls that lay ahead. For those of you that like to dive, skydive or just drive on I-95 – well, you understand what I mean. Life is not without risks. It is filled with peril. Why not take stock of this phenomenon as the dawn of a New Year breaks and set your sights higher than before? A recent survey of our membership showed that 90% plan to either maintain their current workforce or grow in 2012. Good…news. After three years of losing jobs in the marketplace, most feel confident enough in the waning days of this year to look optimistically into the future. So, don’t just hop or skip or jump as the new year dawns…take an enormous leap directly into 2012 and make it happen. You will be glad you did.

TRUSTEE TALK

Linda Knudsen, Baptist

Happy 2012! This year the Chamber is committed to “opening doors” to more opportunities, bigger business and better relationships for all our members. Our exciting calendar of events for the New Year ensures there will be many occasions for you to do so. We hope you take full advantage of them.

Health of South Florida

One of the best ways to open doors is by networking. In our last Trustee Talk, we provided the two (set a goal and smile) networking strategies. Here are two more. & Trustee Council Chair LindaK@baptisthealth.net

Strategy #3: Get out of your comfort zone. Chatting up the bartender or kibitzing with co-workers is NOT why you’re here! The point of networking isn’t to spend time with people who already know you. It’s to meet new people and expand your circle of contacts. Remember your goal, and spend time advancing toward it. Strategy #4: Wear a nametag. Sure, nametags look silly (the good news is everyone is wearing one), and sometimes they snag your clothes. Wear one anyway! Here are three

reasons why: First, a person’s name is the single thing most people forget. If people don’t know or forgot your name, they’re less likely to approach you. Second, it’s free advertising for you and your company. Third, believe it or not, nametags encourage people to be friendly and more approachable. Many professionals today have a custom nametag made to use at networking events. That way they can control the style, design and information. Plus, it’s a great icebreaker, because it stands out. Contact an advertising specialty or awards and trophy company to have yours made. (Order one with a magnet. It preserves your clothing.) Then, make sure you wear it! We look forward to seeing you at the first Chamber event of 2012, our Trustee Reception on Tuesday, January 10th at 5:30 PM at Mercantil Commercebank, 220 Alhambra Circle, Coral Gables. In the meantime, you might want to read Networking Like A Pro (January 2010) by New York Times bestselling author Dr. Ivan Misner, and learn more networking strategies to help you reach quality prospects, leverage your contacts, motivate ongoing referrals and track your success.
