Since it's inception 24 years ago, Flags on Ponce highlights our international business community. The flags of our Sister Cities, consular offices, multinational businesses and international citizens have waived brilliantly above Ponce de Leon Boulevard.
Originally created by our Chamber, Flags on Ponce is a visual reminder of our City’s rich international roots. Greetings, Chamber Members! Fall started off to a rousing start with our monthly signature Good Morning Coral Gables breakfast and the traditional “Passing of the Gavel Ceremony” before a tremendous number of our members. It was truly humbling for me to be surrounded by one of the best Chamber Boards, and gratifying by the number of Past Chairs who participated in this symbolic passing. We were sworn in by Judge Michelle Alvarez Barakat, a staunch supporter of our Chamber. A special tip of the hat to our immediate Past Chair, Wayne Eldred, for all he did during his term! While the rest of the month and into October zoomed past with many great events and networking opportunities, on October 14th, over thirty of our Chamber’s leaders gathered to hit the streets for a more serious mission, our annual Chamber Blitz. Dividing into teams, we visited the businesses affected by the Streetscape Project. Visiting the retail stores and restaurants being impacted by the improvements being made personifies, for me, one of the most important missions of our Chamber, to enhance and sustain the businesses of everyone who is, or will be impacted by the improvements being made. We went to listen, to help where we could, and to show our commitment to their success during this process. We are all looking forward to the completion of what will be a national showcase for our City when completed. Many thanks to those of you who took time from your day to visit every store and restaurant. We made a difference and demonstrated that as a Chamber, we care! Many thanks to the 200 members who attended the Chairman's Reception at the newly remodeled Hotel Colonnade. Over 30 table-top exhibits featured the products and services, in addition to the Chamber’s many committees, where members could learn more about what each committee does. The Business & Government Affairs Committee held a straw poll to see which way our members are leaning in the elections, but if you weren’t there, you’ll have to learn the results from a fellow member who was present! The food was delicious, our terrific partner and Trustee member Bacardi, furnished the libations and DJ Mayner kept everyone on their toes. It was a great pleasure to cap off the evening by formally introducing the membership to the 2016-2017 Board of Directors and Committee Chairs, followed by over a dozen raffles and prizes from member vendors! Special thanks to our Chair-Elect Martha de la Pena Rojas for spearheading this terrific event. It’s hard to believe, the 6th annual BURGERLICIOUS return on November 3rd. This event, held at Fred B. Harnett/Ponce Circle Park, will showcase 24 restaurants competing for the 'Best in Bun' and 'People's Choice' awards. We are expecting nearly 1,800 hungry guests! This record-breaking crowd will be happy to know the wildly popular Mad World Orchestra is back. As always, a huge thank you to Mark Trowbridge and his dedicated staff in making all of these events, and the additional 100 plus events each each year, so successful! Hello, it's me | I was wondering if after all these years you'd like to meet | To go over everything. | They say that time's supposed to heal ya But I ain't done much healing.
This past week, I went to the AAA to see my favorite singer perform some of her greatest and most memorable hits. Sure, she hasn’t been around as long as other artists of equal fame, but Adele has cornered the market on heartache and heartbreak like no other in the history of broken relationships. She lives in her feelings…and, that may be what I like about her best – besides her powerful, soulful voice that always hits the right note. I love her honesty, her vulnerability and of course, her unabashed full-figuredness.
