I hope everyone had a wonderful and prosperous first quarter of the year. The Chamber has been humming along wonderfully and our overall health is at an all-time high, and it’s all thanks to each of you, our President and his staff, as well as our Board of Directors
This past month we participated in our annual D.C fly-in, with 20 delegates representing our businesses right here in Coral Gables and Greater Miami. Our purpose was to meet with our governing officials and leaders, and give them the ability to understand what their citizens are interested in. All of the items discussed were brought to the table and voted on at our Board meetings and delivered to each of our elected members with the hopes of finding proper resolution. As we move into the summer months, our Chamber readies itself for our new incoming leaders to align. John Allen, Vice President of Home Financing Center and our Incoming Chairman, is working diligently to put forward an outstanding Annual Conference. We have decided after much discussion to move the Annual Conference to August where it will be hosted at the gorgeous Biltmore Hotel. I thank each of you for your continued support this year, and hope that all of you continue to grow your businesses. PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVE - PUTTING THE MIRACLE BACK IN THE MILE Mark A. Trowbridge

For the past decade, the re-imagination of Miracle Mile has been a top priority of our Chamber leadership and part of our ongoing program of work. During that time, we have worked hard to build political will with our elected officials spanning two Commissions, encouraged our retail and restaurant members along the Mile to support these improvements and led from the front on supporting small businesses that will be directly impacted through advocacy, awareness and programming. Along with our partners at the Business Improvement District (BID) and the City of Coral Gables, this multi-million dollar investment will transform our most iconic business district, one that dates back to the earliest days of our beloved Coral Gables. In fact, if you stand at the apex of Miracle Mile at LeJeune Road, you will see the historic marker memorializing those who helped first imagine Miracle Mile – The Zains and Albert Friedman, among others. I am convinced that they would be very pleased with our plans and even more excited with the transformation about to take place. They were shop owners and they understood the need for progress.
When the streetscape project is completed in the next 1822 months, both Miracle Mile and Giralda Avenue will shine with a newness that pays homage to our historic past and to the many shop owners who blazed a trail that has led us to today, like the Zains. And, it will herald a bright thoroughfare that bustles with consumers from here and afar. One thing I know - and love - about Coral Gables is that we never forget our history. In fact, we honor it like no other place in the world. I am very proud of the role our Chamber has played in this long sought after improvement to our downtown. We have testified countless time before our City leadership, hosted and participated in numerous town halls, engaged our membership in every aspect of the conversation, sat on the steering committee that designed the plan and even helped plan the groundbreaking ceremony. And now, we will also stand tall with our members and merchants during the growing pains that will take place over the next two years. It will not be easy, but we will work every day to make sure that everyone knows we are indeed open for business. We are in this together and together we will all celebrate once Miracle Mile is re-born. Think about it: The City MORE Beautiful is just on the horizon. And when it is finally completed, it will be a glorious day for us. all
On Thursday, when we turned the ceremonial shovels of dirt in McBride Park, we made good on a promise to our business leaders and property owners along Miracle Mile and Giralda Avenue. For years, we have asked them to join us on this journey to re-make our main street while ensuring our competitiveness as a business community for years to come. And now, we have taken the final steps towards our collective future. The Miracle Mile and Giralda Avenue Streetscape Project will transform our downtown and create a linear district that is equal parts business epicenter and retail magnet. In concert with this physical upgrade, we will also be embarking on a retail strategy study that will help us recruit those brands that will draw consumers to the Mile, all the while creating a feeling of being both local and local at heart. The design team at Cooper Robertson and Partners who dreamed up the project has taken our ideas and turned them into our wildest dreams. If you have seen the sample installation in front of Einstein's in the 200 block of Miracle Mile, then you have experienced the colors of our brilliant South Florida sky - the azure of the horizon, the grey tones on a summer day right before a quick sun shower and the white cumulous clouds puffed to perfection - reflected in the beautiful stone tiles that will populate the curbless Mile. In addition, the wider sidewalks and refreshed tree canopy will create a walkable street that will both beckon and welcome, something that is good for business.

Spring, Summer and Success The Trustee Council celebrates the success of our Trustee members and welcomes new members this season. Each month at our Trustee Luncheon we recognize new members, such as Giralda Place, Invest: Miami, Martinez Morales and Valley National Bank (announced at our March luncheon). As we learn about our newest members, we also enjoy hearing about the successes of current members. For those who attended our March luncheon, I am sure you are still impressed with the stats that Eric Silagy, President and CEO of FPL (Trustee Members since 1953) shared. These included: FPL residential customer bills are approximately 30 percent lower than the national average, they employ approximately 8,880, and serve more than 4.8 million customer accounts.
