JAX TYRES & AUTO CAIRNS PROVIDES FREE FULL SERVICE FOR LOCAL RESIDENT AFTER VEHICLE STOLEN Fast-growing Japanese fast-casual brand Motto Motto Japanese Kitchen has expanded its national marketing capability with two key appointments, naming Holly Barnes as National Marketing Manager and Aleksandra Korf as Marketing Manager.

The appointments mark a major leap forward in Motto Motto’s brand and digital firepower, with the brand scaling up to a larger, more specialised marketing team as it accelerates toward 30 locations in 2026. The announcement lands the same week Motto Motto opens its 21st restaurant, underscoring the brand’s rapid momentum and growth trajectory.

As National Marketing Manager, Barnes will set the pace for the brand - driving strategy, national campaigns, guest experience innovation, and long-term brand elevation. A Cairns resident, who was reeling at her vehicle being stolen and wrecked, has had her car completely repaired at no cost, thanks to the generosity of local suppliers.

Deborah Wilkinson was asleep in her Cairns home when her vehicle was stolen, and after seeing the severe damage done to the vehicle and the unfortunate realisation that her insurance policy was out-of-date, she was facing being out of pocket by more than $4,000.

After making an appeal on Facebook, Ms Wilkinson and her family were left stunned at an outpouring of support from those in the community, and crucially, a number of organisations who collaborated to bring her Ford Ute back to life.

The team at JAX Tyres & Auto Cairns came across Ms Wilkinson’s Facebook post and Store Manager Evan Billerwell, was keen to help as soon as he became aware of the situation.

“It was a no-brainer for JAX Tyres & Auto to support Deborah and her family where we could - the car was in a bad state after it was unfortunately stolen from her home. It started off with new tyres and a mechanical check but it soon became clear that further work was required and we were keen to provide a full service.

“While we took the initiative, this wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the teams at Ace Mobile, Mr Minute and NQ Crash who all contributed, it was great to see everyone rally together to support a local family who needed a helping hand.”

Ms Wilkinson said: “I’m absolutely blown away by the generosity of Evan and all the local organisations, who have provided me and my family with total emotional and financial relief when we most needed it. It’s acts like this that really cement your faith in our Aussie spirit and the local community.”

Price Attack says ‘Show Me The Money’ with Bold Franchise Incentives Brisbane-based national haircare leader Price Attack wants to open 10 new stores next year and is prepared to show aspiring franchisees ‘the money’ launching its boldest franchise support program in a decade.

Like many industries, we have faced a period of challenge, scrutiny and change. But what I am seeing across the country now is something far more powerful: an industry that has taken the time to rebuild, that is renewing its confidence, and that is refreshing how it tells its story.

At the Franchise Council of Australia (FCA), this theme of rebuild, renew and refresh has been more than a slogan. It has been a practical, deliberate reset for the organisation, for our members, and for how franchising is perceived by government, media and the broader community.

Rebuilding trust and foundations Over the past year, the FCA has focused on strengthening its foundations so we can deliver consistently for members. That has meant financial discipline, clarity of purpose, and a relentless focus on advocacy, engagement and value. We are now operating from a far stronger base, with a clear strategic plan and the confidence to look forward.

Just as importantly, rebuilding has meant reconnecting with members across the entire franchise ecosystem of franchisors, franchisees, suppliers, advisers and service providers. Franchising only works when the whole system works together, and the FCA exists to bring that system together with credibility and leadership.

That reconnection has been visible at every level: national events, state chapter activity, industry roundtables, webinars and countless one-on-one conversations. It has been wonderful to see so many familiar and new faces again at our Christmas events across the states. These moments matter. Refreshing how we tell our story One of the most important shifts underway is how franchising tells its story.

For too long, the narrative about franchising has been incomplete. That is changing.

The Australian Franchise Outlook 2026 is a significant step forward in presenting franchising with clarity, balance and credibility. It brings together data, surveys and real stories from across the sector to show policymakers and stakeholders what franchising actually looks like on the ground.

I am very pleased to report that the Australian Franchise Outlook is already having the desired impact in Canberra.

Every Federal Member of Parliament and Senator has received a personal copy, giving them a deeper understanding of the positive role franchising plays in the Australian economy and in their electorates. This matters. Influence starts with understanding, and understanding starts with quality information.

This is part of a broader refresh in how the FCA is positioning the industry: consistent

messaging, better data, and a stronger emphasis on people and outcomes rather than noise and headlines. It is about ensuring franchising is seen as the professional, responsible and opportunity-driven model that it is.

The future of franchising in Australia is one I am genuinely optimistic about.

Looking firmly to the future One of the real highlights of recent weeks has been the opportunity to come together in person across the country to mark the year coming to a close.

It was genuinely wonderful to catch up with so many members and colleagues at our state chapter Christmas events. These gatherings are a chance to reconnect, to reflect on what has been achieved, and to recognise the effort that goes into building successful franchise businesses day in, day out.

The conversations I had reinforced just how resilient and committed franchising is.

Despite a challenging operating environment for many, there remains a strong sense of optimism, professionalism and pride across the franchise community. Seeing that energy firsthand in Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney was a timely reminder of why the FCA’s role as a connector and advocate is so important.

As we head into the Christmas period, I want to wish all franchisors, franchisees and industry partners a positive and successful trading season. This is a critical time of year for many businesses, and I know the effort and planning that sits behind every store opening, roster, delivery and customer interaction.

How One 31-Year-Old Franchisee Built Legendary Oporto Stores and a 100-Person Team At just 31, Akankssha Taneja Sandhu stands as one of Oporto’s brightest franchise success stories. With two of the brand’s top five high-volume restaurants under her leadership and almost 100 employees across her operations, her rise through the ranks is a textbook case of how strong systems, supportive franchising, and entrepreneurial drive can come together to create remarkable results.

A Leap of Faith at 21 While most 21-year-olds are focused on university or early career steps, Akankssha was opening the doors to her very first Oporto restaurant.

“I was nervous,” she admits. “Taking the leap from being an employee to running a business is such a huge financial and emotional decision. I questioned whether I 24 business franchise MAGAZINE

would succeed, I had a big responsibility on my shoulders.”

She bought the business with her father, but it was Akankssha and her mother who took on the day-to-day challenge of operating the store. “We were working 10-hour days side by side,” she recalls. “That’s where I learned what it truly means to run a franchise, it’s not just ownership, it’s leadership.”

Grounded in Brand Experience Her Oporto story began long before ownership. At just 16, Akankssha joined the brand as a front-of-house employee while still in Year 10. She continued working shifts through her commerce and accounting degree, and by graduation, she’d already been promoted to store manager.

After completing her degree, she briefly stepped into auditing, but the corporate world couldn’t compete with the thrill of running a business. When her former franchisee called to ask if she wanted to buy his store, she didn’t hesitate.

“Entrepreneurship is in my blood,” she says. “My dad ran his own timber and construction business in India. When the opportunity came up, I saw so much flexibility and potential, I knew this was my path.”

Family at the Core Oporto has truly become a family affair for the Taneja Sandhu clan. Her father and brother co-own restaurants in Dubbo and Orange, while her husband, Naavneet, is her business partner in Plumpton.

“We actually met through Oporto,” she says with a smile. “We got married after I bought my first drive-thru. Now, with two small children, the flexibility of running our own stores means we can balance business and family life, that’s something we’re both grateful for.”

I have seen it happen again and again over my 20 plus years working with franchise systems across Australia and internationally. But here is the kicker, the franchises who truly dominate are not relying on luck or motivation. They are using the first 60 days of the new year to set themselves up for unstoppable momentum.

The best franchisees do not wait for opportunities to knock; they create them.

By the time competitors realise what is happening, you are already established, visible, and relevant.

There are many low-cost franchises on offer these days that can be attractive to someone who has been made redundant or just tired of your existing career path.

Many of these franchises are home services or mobile franchises which are affordable and you don’t need to mortgage your home to get into one.

Franchises come in all shapes and sizes and fit many budgets, and no two franchises (even in the same sector) are necessarily the same, so you need to carefully select the right one for you.

How do you select the right franchise for you?

Steps to consider • Your Budget Work out your budget and your risk profile – how much can you afford, or borrow, and how far do you want to stretch your borrowings - there is good and bad debt and borrowing or investing to go into a viable business that will generate income and build wealth is “good” debt. That is, you get a return on your investment.

• Prepare a business plan Write down your personal goals, objectives, skills you would like to use (or new ones you want to learn), how long do you want 40 business franchise MAGAZINE

to be in the business and, how that will affect your lifestyle and use the plan to assess which franchise aligns with your plan.

• Research

Some of these relate to: a. whether you are given an exclusive area or territory to operate in, or just a site. b. whether the franchisor is able to compete with you online.

Select the franchise system that meets your criteria and prepare a short list of potential franchises to then investigate.

c. is there is a marketing or Special Purpose fund you must contribute to.

This should include talking to existing franchisees, focus on the up front and ongoing operational costs and potential earnings and ability to earn an income from your effort.

e. does the Franchisor supply goods and can they force excess stock onto you.

Prepare your own cash flow projections and ensure your cash flows include cost of goods, advertising and a salary for your efforts to ensure it is financially viable.

• Independent Legal and Financial Advice Before you commit seek advice from a specialist franchise lawyer and accountant to minimise your risk.

d. what extra costs you need to pay for IT, or management systems support.

f. does the Franchisor receive and share supplier rebates? g. check out the exit costs if you sell the business down the track. h. what training is offered and where. i. does the location work based on where you live. j. who generates the leads the Franchisor or is it all your own marketing? k. do the services or goods being offered have longevity or is it a passing fad. l. consider the impact of AI in the business over the next few years as this may have a positive or negative impact.

Jaimee had some wise words for prospective franchisees and suggests when looking at buying a franchise, don’t just fall in love with the brand, dig into the business system behind it.

A successful franchise system will not leave you to figure it out alone. They will have proven launch playbooks, hands-on support, marketing campaigns, and clear performance targets for you.

Jaimee gives the example, in fitness franchises, where you need at least 150 members to make the business viable, for long-term success, so you need a franchisor who not only knows those benchmarks but has a step-by-step system to help you hit them

Mobile v Fixed site franchises Mobile Franchises With a mobile franchise, the up-front franchise fee is usually the biggest cost (it could be as low as $8,000 up to $25,000.00 apart from the need to lease a vehicle, branding and equipment costs. The overall investment could therefore be around $30,000 to $100,000 (high end) to get moving.

b. Does the franchisor have a social media presence and “on line” policy and direct leads to you, in your territory? Is it fair and clear how the leads are allocated ?

The vehicle and equipment can usually be leased, which reduces the up-front capital outlay.

c. Is the territory near where you live? travelling across town to service your territory may become tiring and costly.

Many mobile franchisors charge a fixed weekly or monthly royalty rather than a percentage of gross turnover therefore, the amount payable from a franchisee’s gross turnover (not their profit) can range from 10% up to 14% all up.

d. Do you have to travel long distances within your territory to service clients for a small fee - in which case there may be little profit in each job?

A weekly fixed fee with a smaller franchise can be positive if the business is successful and growing but can otherwise be a fixed cost that becomes a debt to the franchisor if you are not actively working the franchise.

The working capital requirements for a mobile franchise are also lower generally than for a fixed site franchise over the first six or twelve months of operation.

Even though a mobile franchise has less upfront cost (which means less risk) that may also mean a smaller income or return and simply buying yourself a job. There is nothing wrong with that if you are content with that!

e. Can you still take time off and have a break without impacting on the business if you are a sole trader? f. What is the franchisors policy if you want to go on leave?

All in all, a low cost or mobile franchise may be a great option, but it won’t suit everyone.

Fixed Site The franchise fee for a fixed site franchise maybe between $30,000 to $80,000 plus fit out costs, stock and a myriad of other costs so the start-up costs could be well over $250,000.00 to $500,000.00.

Key considerations for a mobile franchise are:

The royalty’s payable on the franchisee turnover generally ranges from 6% to10% plus a marketing fee of between 2% to 4%.

a. Will you get an allocated and exclusive territory, or will the franchisor or other franchisees be able to sell to customers in your territory?

Therefore, the actual return on Investment (ROI) for a fixed site could take much longer than a smaller franchise simply due to amortisation of the costs over a longer period.

Again, you could lease the equipment to reduce the capital outlay but then you also need to ensure you have enough working capital and will likely have all of the costs of a fixed site such as rent and staff costs and Insurances to cover.

Whichever franchise you select the key measure of satisfaction will be financial (not lifestyle), that is can you take a reasonable wage for your effort and get a return on your investment (ROI) when you sell down the track.

Getting Good Advice Our view is if the numbers do not look like they work up front walk away as there will be plenty of other opportunities where the numbers will work!

I advise my clients “good advice will cost you money, bad advice may just end up costing you a whole lot more!”

We see this regularly where a franchisee comes to us for advice after they have taken up a franchise and looking to exit and we find that they did not get any advice at all or they got advice from their local lawyer who did not have the expertise to advise the client properly.

Right at Home Australia had much to celebrate in 2025. It was a massive year for the brand, hiring a new CEO Fritha Radyk, welcoming six new franchise territories and expanding into the Northern Territory, while simultaneously responding to unprecedented regulatory change with the Federal Government’s new Aged Care Act and Support at Home Program.

Faced with new Quality Care Standards, rapid network expansion, and a planned leadership restructure, Right at Home Australia made the decision to appoint its first CEO mid last year. Fritha will provide strategic leadership and direction for the network of locally owned franchise offices.

This is always a watershed moment for any owner led franchise network and comes after much planning and consideration by Right at Home Australia Founders Karen and Daryl Sahli.

Australia's new Aged Care Act (2024), which came into force on 1 November 2025, introduces a fundamental, rights-based overhaul of the aged care system, moving the focus from providers to Older Australian’s needs and preferences. A major reform under the Act is the launch of the Support at Home program, which replaces the previous Home Care Packages program and is intended to provide a single, simplified, and more flexible system for in-home support in the long term.

In the short term, Support at Home means a complete change to funding and service

models across the sector. This includes meanstested contributions and lifetime caps on non-clinical care costs to ensure fairness and sustainability.

The legislation also strengthens quality standards and regulatory oversight, grants greater powers to the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission, and enhances whistleblower protections – requiring a significant ‘step up’ for many home care providers. Right at Home’s global care standards, established network, and fee structure (already consistent with the Support at Home Program) makes the company ideally positioned to respond to this once in a generation change to the sector.

Rapid Network Growth As part of the appointment of the new CEO, Karen and Daryl have been freed from dayto-day operations to focus almost entirely on franchise recruitment. It is anticipated that this will further drive the growth Right at Home has already experienced thanks to the opportunities presented by the aged care sector. Right at Home has already sold 60 franchises, with at least 60 more available for potential owners across all Australian states and territories. This expansion directly addresses the significant demand created

by Australia's rapidly ageing population.

Furthermore, excellent opportunities for resales are emerging as some franchise owners approach the end of their 10-year franchise agreements and look to realise the value of their businesses for retirement.

Planned Leadership Restructure Following the arrival its CEO, Right at Home restructured its executive team to prepare for the new regulatory regime and planned growth, while providing comprehensive support across key functional areas to the network. This restructure focused on four

Right at Home has also engaged a Palliative Care Clinical Specialist to further strengthen its palliative and end of life care practices.

This investment ensures that Right at Home’s approach to care is not only compliant but compassionate, embedding specialist knowledge into service delivery and reinforcing its commitment to dignity, quality, and excellence in the most critical stages of life. This collaboration also ensures Right at Home’s clinical practices in this space are research and evidenced based.

In finance, Right at Home is increasing senior-level resourcing to support strategic growth and profit optimisation alongside daily financial functions. Finally, the systems team uses dedicated resources to strategically assess the future role of automation and systems within the company.

Financial Due Diligence Buying a franchise is one of the most significant financial decisions you’ll make. It’s natural to approach a business opportunity with optimism and enthusiasm. However, if the business doesn’t produce the financial results you’re counting on, you could face years of financial stress working long hours for little income or find yourself unable to repay your investment before the franchise term ends.

Owning a franchise always involves financial risk. A wise buyer takes action to understand and reduce that risk before signing.

Understanding the risk means recognising some hard truths: you’ll only be able to pay yourself if the business makes a surplus after covering operating costs and staff wages.

To repay your investment, the business must generate enough profit to cover all costs including your own wages. And here’s the critical point: if you can’t repay your investment within the franchise term, you face the real possibility that the business will close with debt still owing to yourself or a bank.

Now to the question of how to reduce the financial risk associated with buying a

franchise. This is the financial due diligence stage of buying a franchise.

The first step in financial due diligence is to answer three questions: 1. What will the annual operating costs of the business be? These should include your own wages and interest on any borrowings.

2. How much profit does the business need to make over the initial franchise term to repay the upfront investment?

3. What annual sales are needed to cover the operating costs, repay the initial investment, and provide a return on your investment of your own money?

Working out these answers requires detailed financial modeling that accounts for dozens

of variables and their interactions. Most franchise buyers benefit from working with an experienced advisor or accountant who specialises in franchise businesses. Here’s what this process typically involves:

Estimate Your Operating Costs Work out the likely operating costs for the first year you’ll own the business. You’ll need to estimate three types of cost:

Fixed costs of operation - costs you’ll incur regardless of your sales level. These include rent, insurance (general and workers’ compensation), vehicle costs, utilities, software subscriptions, professional fees like accounting, and ongoing franchise fees if they’re a set monthly amount rather than based on sales.

Variable costs - expenses that only occur when you make a sale. In a café, these include coffee, milk, food ingredients, and packaging.

The franchisor should provide a target range,

typically expressed as a percentage like 2932% of sales. Franchise royalties calculated as a percentage of sales are also variable costs.

Annual wages cost, including superannuation - This can be tricky to estimate because while every business has a minimum staffing requirement, higher sales usually demand more staff. A good starting point is the cost of the recommended staffing level for the first year, or if you’re purchasing an existing business, use the current staff costs as a guide.

Calculate Your Breakeven Point Once you know these costs, you can calculate your breakeven point - the minimum sales needed just to cover costs.

Here’s how: First, work out your contribution margin (this is simply 100% minus your variable costs percentage). So, if your café’s food costs are 30% and royalty is 9%, your contribution margin is 61% - meaning 61 cents of every dollar in sales is available to cover fixed costs.

Then divide your total fixed costs and wages by this contribution margin. For example, if your fixed costs and wages total $300,000 and your contribution margin is 61%, you need sales of $491,803 just to break even.

But breaking even isn’t enough - you also need to repay your initial investment. To factor this in, add another annual cost: your total upfront investment divided by the number of years in your franchise term. A $400,000 investment in a 10-year franchise term means you need an additional $40,000 in profit each year just to get your money back.

Once you’ve completed these steps, you’ll have a reasonable estimate of the target sales for your first year. You can extend this analysis to cover three or four years to get a financial picture of the business over a longer term.

Do the financials stack up?

Once you’ve got the financial model worked out, it’s time to turn to the big question: “How confident am I that the business can operate within this cost structure and generate the target level of sales?”

This opens up another part of the due diligence process: looking for evidence that your assumptions are reasonable. To do this, you’ll need to ask questions of the franchisor and the existing franchisees.

This is where experienced guidance becomes invaluable. A specialist franchise accountant can help you test your assumptions against real franchisee data, identify red flags in the financial model, and ask the tough questions that might save you from a costly mistake.

Once a franchisee has identified a particular business to buy then the services of an experienced franchising lawyer and a business savvy accountant are essential. It is good to borrow from a bank when purchasing a franchise as that will ensure an ongoing commitment and discipline with the bank in relation to repayments; but do not over-extend yourself.

There is nothing worse than feeling pressured to pay creditors with no buffer. Banks will usually require loans for franchising repaid within five years so your forecasting must build that time frame into account.

Good cash flow management is essential for any business. Of course, due regard must be given to any specific legal requirements of the franchise system. For example, if you were to purchase a business involving food there are strict regulations in relation to food hygiene and food management.

• Franchisor’s obligation to conduct extensive training

An important point to note in regard to today’s world of multi-communications is you must always be aware of the power of social media, especially Facebook and Instagram.

Franchising is well understood and accepted in both Australia and New Zealand, and according to the 2024 Survey of Franchising in New Zealand, it covers a wide range of industry categories including retail trade, accommodation and food services, and administration and support services.

Franchise Agreement The key legal document is the franchise agreement. Many clauses which are usually included in the agreement include the following:

• Term of the franchise • Rights of renewal of term • Obligation to pay royalties and advertising fees to the franchisor • Minimum performance criteria • Good faith obligations on the part of a franchisee and the franchisor • Not to prejudice the franchisor’s intellectual property • Customer database and privacy • Customer complaints

• Franchisor’s obligation to provide the manuals which should include the operating manual and health and safety manuals • Dispute resolution recommending mediation Australia is far more regulated than New Zealand with a mandatory disclosure regime.

Prospective franchisees can rely on the disclosure document and whatever is stated in it. Therefore, all statements and representations made by any franchisor must be true.

To go into franchising, the message is clear – do your homework by way of due diligence, ask the right questions of a franchisor, have a bank behind you which provides necessary finance, and obtain expert accounting, taxation and legal advice. A monetary investment in the due diligence process is essential as you need to know what you are getting into and what your continuing obligations are. However, above all – do not over-extend yourself by paying too much for a franchised business when you really cannot afford it. v

Tax can be complicated and it's not the only thing to consider when running a franchise business.

• know which expenses you're entitled to claim, and separate your business and private expenses correctly

If your franchise employs contractors, you may need to lodge a taxable payments annual report (TPAR) to report any payments you’ve made to contractors.

The New Frontier of Sales: How AI Is Expanding Human Capability, Not Replacing It

For decades, the practice of sales has been defined by human strengths like empathy, intuition, persuasion and the ability to build trust and these qualities remain at the heart of any meaningful commercial relationship. Yet the environment in which our sales teams now operate has changed faster than even the most adaptable organisations can manage.

Buyers expect immediate responses, regardless of the hour; they are inundated with choices and information, and they move quickly from initial interest to disengagement, if not nurtured at the right moment.

In high-velocity markets such as franchising, where potential buyers often make inquiries outside standard business hours and expect

almost instant clarification, the traditional human-only sales model simply cannot keep pace. It’s a fact that when looking for new franchisees, the quicker a company gets back to the initial lead, the greater chance they have of securing that franchisee. We call this ‘speed to lead’.

This tension between what humans do best and what the market now demands is driving a profound shift. Artificial intelligence has moved from being a futuristic concept to a practical force multiplier in sales operations.

Rather than replacing sales professionals, AI is increasingly taking on the work that people cannot do at scale or speed, freeing teams to focus on what truly requires human judgment and emotional intelligence. The evolution of AI within sales represents one of the most significant transformations in commercial engagement in a generation, offering new ways to augment human capability while preserving the personal relationships that underpin effective selling.

One of the most important contributions AI makes to modern sales is its ability to operate without the constraints of time. Potential franchisees do not wait for business hours to research opportunities or to submit a request for more information. Prospective franchisees often explore opportunities in the evenings or on weekends when they are away from their current jobs and can focus on major investment decisions. When those enquiries land in a human salesperson’s inbox at 9pm or 3am, they almost always go unanswered until the next morning. By then, interest may have cooled, or the candidate may already have engaged with a competitor who was quicker to respond. AI turns this dynamic on its head by providing immediate, personalised engagement at any hour, ensuring that no enquiry is left idle and no potential relationship is lost simply due to timing.

Speed is only part of the picture. Volume and variability are equally challenging. Sales teams, especially in franchise development, often manage hundreds or even thousands of incoming leads monthly. Each candidate arrives with different motivations, financial circumstances, experience levels and expectations. Human teams cannot reasonably maintain instantaneous, tailored communication at this scale without missing opportunities or compromising the quality of their interactions. AI systems excel in highvolume contexts because they can manage multiple conversations simultaneously, adapt responses based on context and follow structured qualification pathways with consistency. They do not tire, they do not forget to follow-up and they do not get overwhelmed during peak periods.

Importantly, this does not diminish the role of human sales professionals. In fact,

it elevates it. By taking on the repetitive, process-driven and out-of-hours work, AI allows skilled salespeople to devote their energy to the parts of the journey that truly require a human touch. In franchising, this includes deeper discovery conversations, relationship building, financial and operational coaching and guiding candidates through the emotional and often complex decision to invest in a brand. When AI handles initial engagement and qualification, development directors and sales consultants can focus on quality interactions rather than quantity, resulting in stronger conversion rates and better-matched franchisees.

The strengths of AI in this context are rooted in several unique capabilities that are difficult, if not impossible, for humans to replicate. AI can analyse patterns across tens of thousands of interactions, learning what questions or messages increase the likelihood of a franchisee progressing to the next stage.

It can detect when a prospect becomes disengaged and it can trigger re-engagement at the right moment. It can personalise communication using information drawn from a brand’s own materials, ensuring that every message is accurate, compliant and aligned with the organisation’s voice. These strengths create consistency across every interaction.

Selecting the right franchisee is one of the most important decisions a brand can make.

A poor fit can damage the brand’s reputation, strain support resources and ultimately lead to financial loss for both parties.

Development teams face the difficult task of sifting through large volumes of enquiries to find candidates who meet financial thresholds, have the right background and demonstrate the motivation and values that align with the brand. This is labour-intensive and requires a combination of structured process and intuition. AI supports this by automating the structured components of qualification while enhancing visibility into candidate behaviour. For example, an AI system may identify patterns indicating that certain candidates are more serious or more aligned to the franchise’s requirements based on their engagement levels, types of questions asked or how they interact with specific pieces of content.

Another challenge in franchise sales is the uneven pace of engagement. Some candidates move quickly, eager to schedule a call or attend a discovery day. Others require nurturing over weeks or months. AI excels in long-tail engagement by maintaining consistent follow-up without the fatigue or inconsistency that often arises in manual processes. A candidate who expressed interest three months ago but never booked a call might receive a tailored message at the right moment, reigniting the conversation.

This type of augmentation is not limited to franchising; it reflects a wider shift across all sales-driven industries. The most successful organisations today are those that treat AI as a teammate rather than a threat. They understand that humans and machines bring different strengths to the table. Humans offer empathy, creativity, nuanced understanding and the ability to navigate complex personal and financial decisions. AI brings unmatched speed, consistency, memory and the ability to manage complexity at scale.

Franchise development, like many sales disciplines, relies heavily on trust, credibility and relationship-building. These are areas where humans not only outperform AI but are indispensable. No candidate makes a significant financial and lifestyle decision purely on the basis of automated interactions.

They rely on the guidance, reassurance and insight of experienced development managers.

AI enhances those interactions by setting the stage more effectively, but the decision itself remains profoundly human.

The future of sales, particularly in franchising, will be defined by hybrid models where AI and human expertise work side by side. Brands that adopt this approach will move faster, engage more effectively and allocate their human talent to the highestvalue activities. They will respond to enquiries instantly, qualify candidates intelligently and maintain consistent engagement throughout the entire journey. Their development teams will spend less time on administrative tasks and more time building relationships with serious, well-matched prospects. Candidates will experience a smoother, more personalised journey, improving their confidence and satisfaction.

Sailing and Franchising

Both require planning, technique and patience to win the Championship...

America’s Cup in San Francisco in 2013, and that was the level approaching perfection (at that time) – one that every Franchisor dreams of. These boats were approaching 100 km/hr up on foils and were being sailed by the best professional sailors in the world.

As much as we may dream of this level of sailing, the beautiful Couta boat I sail on does not quite reach this level of performance or perfection – but we try hard to!

I have been a sailor since I was 9 years old, and I think there is a great comparison between franchising and sailing in many areas. To be successful in either, there are many parallels, which may lead me to suggest Franchisors looking for high quality Franchisees, should start scouring the Sailing Clubs around Australia and overseas!

The day before a race, our skipper decides on how many people he wants to take as crew depending on the forecast wind. Often we sail with 7, or down to 5 on a light day. I would compare this to looking at the economic climate, and having a feel of what may be coming in the near future. All franchises should be doing this possibly in the form of a SWAT analysis on a regular basis.

Whether in business or sailing, you need good equipment. If a Franchise system is skimping on fitout, equipment required to service the customer, and just looks tired, the performance will probably mirror that image. In my days at Caltex, it was essential that every so often a new image was bought in to keep the service stations competitive, or they just lost their shine and performance followed.

In sailing this is reflected in having a good boat that will be consistent and reliable. The America’s Cup boats are the most consistent I have ever seen, relying on technical innovations, the best crew work and tactics to achieve superiority over their competition.

In the Couta boats this comes down to good design, regular maintenance and even getting the bottom cleaned every couple of weeks by a diver (not me)!

Good leadership (the Skipper) A good boat needs a good Skipper to win.

The Skipper must have a great understanding of his vessel, and be able to understand / participate in the decisions that have to go on around him. This does not mean he has to do everything, it means he has to be able to delegate, and make sure all the rest of the crew do their jobs, and give him feedback as required.

The America’s Cup demonstrated this to perfection, with Australian Jimmy Spittle leading Oracle Team USA as the skipper, and yet taking in information from the tactician and all around him.

In a Franchise, this has to be the case from the CEO of the Franchisor, through the Franchisee, and then passed through to the staff. If the leaders are unsure what they are doing, this creates doubt down the chain and inevitably leads to poor performance.

Need to build a consistent team (regulars) How often do we go into a business and over a quiet time, or on a weekend are dismayed by the staff who are on hand? Whether it be poor service in a coffee shop, staff taking phone calls or chatting amongst themselves while the customer stands looking at them, it all reflects poorly on the business.

In sailing, it is not always easy to get a regular crew (especially when it can need 7 on a Couta boat), so it is always the Skipper’s problem to be recruiting and training so they have a good size pool to draw on. Our recent

By passing on acknowledgement of a job well done, everyone feels better and is more willing to perform at that little bit extra that often makes a big difference.

In sailing it is similar, and in most cases it is a team event. Even if you are a solo sailor, you still probably rely on parents, a partner, or a mate to assist you in your sailing endeavours.

In a team like the Couta boats there has been around 20 different people who were on board at different times in the 20 race season.

So if you can get your hands on the silverware, hold on to it and enjoy it.

Summary Franchising and sailing have a lot in common as both rely on consistent performance to achieve the highest level of success. Maybe the FCA needs to start a training program for Franchisors, Franchisees and their staff on small boats at the various yacht clubs around Australia to build up the resilience!

Franchise jewellery chain enters administration A Brisbane-based jewellery chain that pioneered the sale of laboratory-grown and simulated diamonds in Australia has gone into administration, according to a media report.

The trading entities of Secrets Shhh, including 23 company-owned stores, were placed into voluntary administration but continue to trade as administrators urgently seek a trade sale of the business as a going concern. Stores are still taking orders however administrators cannot guarantee that all orders can be fulfilled, or that gift cards acquired before the administration will be honoured.

The New York-based private equity firm behind aged and disability care platform Mable will acquire Australian family-owned charcoal chicken chain El Jannah for a price approaching $1 billion, according to a media report.

Established in 1997, El Jannah now operates 50 locations across New South Wales, Victoria, and the ACT. El Jannah plans to grow to more than 300 sites within the next decade. On a per-store basis, a $1 billion valuation ranks the El Jannah sale as the most expensive in Australian franchise history, and more than the cost per outlet of the Guzman Y Gomez initial public offering in June last year which valued the Mexican food chain at more than $3 billion with around 180 outlets at the time.

Franchisees demand fee reduction in pizza standoff Australian franchisees of listed fast food operator Domino’s Pizza Enterprises (DMP) are demanding an immediate fee reduction following claims that the company is making it impossible for them to earn a living, according to a media report.

Currently, DMP operates 829 stores in Australia. Represented by the Australian Association of Franchisees (AAF), 128 franchisees from 350 stores allege that increasing fees paid to DMP have been subsidizing a troubled international expansion. Disgruntled franchisees are also claiming that the dollar amount of their earnings has not changed in the past 15 years, which, after adjusting for inflation, means that profits have actually declined in real terms. Additionally, franchisees are concerned about the extent to which Domino’s profits from products supplied by the company to franchisees, and the effectiveness of an increase in the company’s marketing levy funded by franchisees. More than half of the 128 franchisees represented by the AAF

claim they are on payment plans with the Australian Taxation Office, which can be an indicator of insolvency. .

DMP executive chairman and major shareholder Jack Cowin, founder of Hungry Jack’s, took over the reins of Domino’s earlier this year, embarking on a cost-cutting review which has resulted in the elimination of a number of executive roles. Cowin has assured franchisees that of the $70 million in expenses being stripped from the business, two-thirds will be directly reinvested into the franchisee network through lower food, packaging, and advertising fund costs.

Coffee chain's first step outside of QLD is India Brisbane-based café and drive-through franchise Stellarossa has signed a master franchise agreement with Franchise India as coffee and café culture in India becomes established, according to a media report.

Franchise India will adapt Stellarossa’s offerings to Indian conditions driven by a young demographic, changing social habits, and increased consumption of out-of-home food and beverages.

Delivery drivers to receive minimum wage Delivery drivers for food delivery companies in Australia are set to receive accident insurance for injuries sustained on the job and a minimum hourly wage, pending approval by Australia’s industrial relations tribunal, the Fair Work Commission (FWC), according to a media report.

Australia’s two largest food delivery services, DoorDash and Uber Eats, together with the Transport Workers’ Union (TWU) have submitted a joint application to the FWC following the introduction of Federal workplace reforms empowering the FWC to set minimum standards for gig workers. The submitting parties have been in negotiations for years around what protections are necessary and appropriate and what terminology is accurate and acceptable.

The TWU has agreed to refer to workers as “employee-like.” DoorDash and Uber Eats have not confirmed how the increase in operating costs will be funded but they are likely to be passed onto the consumer.

Proposed protections included a safety net rate of pay for delivery drivers of at least $31.30 per hour depending on the type of vehicle used (effective from 1 July 2026 with a further increase from 1 January 2027), personal accident insurance (excluding compulsory third party), new engagement and feedback mechanisms, new dispute

resolution processes, and representation rights. Penalty rates and payment for time spent waiting between jobs are not included.

Prior to approval, the FWC must consult with other stakeholders, including other delivery providers, and must determine whether delivery drivers are employee-like or already employees. Read more

New version of Franchising Code released

Staff personalisation reduces retail abuse

A new version of the Franchising Code of Conduct containing minor technical amendments was released by the Australian Government without any prior announcement to the franchise sector.

Staff personalisation through the use of badges with a subtle note of self-disclosure can significantly reduce verbal abuse of frontline retail staff by customers, according to a media report.

The new Code, which took effect on October 21, includes amendments dealing with powers and functions delegated to the Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman, and secretary of the Franchise Disclosure Register. They do not impact any of the obligations between franchisors and franchisees outlined in the previous Code, including those which come into effect from November 1.

Research into the concept has been undertaken by academics from the Queensland University of Technology’s Business School and Mexico’s EGADE Business School. The research suggests that the self-disclosure reminds customers, who may from a sociological perspective consider themselves to hold all the power in their interactions with retail staff, that employees are also individuals with lives, families, and communities, just like them. Examples of personalised messages of self-disclosure include “I’m a local” and “I’m a dad.”

Mexican chain lowers US growth expectations Listed Australian-based Mexican food chain Guzman Y Gomez (GYG) has lowered investor expectations on its proposed expansion in the United States, limiting growth to its current planned 15 locations until store revenues exceed USD $60,000 per week, according to a media report.

The company, which listed in June last year and experienced an initial surge in its share price has since seen its share price decline 40% this year and is now trading at around 17% lower than its listing price.

Currently GYG only has seven stores in the US and averaged sales growth of 6.7%, below expectations of 9.1%. The company claims it will focus on reduced portion sizes to better accommodate customers who take weight-loss drugs.
