Director's Note When offered the opportunity to direct one of my favorite shows, The Sound of Music, once again, I jumped at the chance. This show holds a special place in my heart. Many of my first, vague, hazy memories involve skipping around the living room to “The Lonely Goatherd” on my grandmother’s vinyl recording of the movie soundtrack. I fell in love with the catchy, fun melodies of the Von Trapp children and haunting, ethereal sounds of the nun’s chanting in Latin. Later, I dreamed of finding the same gauzy, soft-focused romance created by Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer as the Captain and Maria. What kept me coming back to it over and over again, though, was my growing understanding, as I myself grew, of the darker, more historical themes relevant in the show. The looming threat of the Nazi invasion, the different reactions and coping strategies of the various characters within the Captain’s sphere, and the ultimate decision that he is forced to make lend a palpable tension to the show, provoking thought within the audience far beyond the usual expectations of a sweet, family friendly musical. When the production team pitched the idea of using this production to view the piece through a new lens- exploring people’s reaction to war and conflict, I knew that the parallels could make a tried and true story relevant in a fresh way. As we continue to watch unprovoked aggression in Ukraine where families are being separated while fleeing for their lives, civilians are targeted in acts of terrorism, and citizens are rallying to fight for their homeland, we are reminded of the fragility of each of our live’s trajectory and question anew what path each of our morality would lead us to take if faced with the same challenges. While highlighting all the beauty that life has to offer- the purity in the voice of a child, the ritual and mystery of religious faith, the innocence of a first kiss, the unshakeable love of a parent- this show reminds us we must remember to keep these things precious and work together to keep the looming threat at bay. For ourselves and all citizens of the world. Enjoy!

Under the vision and leadership of Aaron Collins, your Space Coast Symphony Orchestra reflects all that makes Central Florida special: its creativity, spirit, beauty and quest for knowledge. The SCSO is a major player on our cultural landscape with a unique mission to make professional classical music affordable and accessible to people of all ages. Thus, in an economic environment where many orchestras would fail, we are able to tell the SCSO success story. While providing more concerts than any other musical organization in Florida, the SCSO has launched bold initiatives and innovative programming that have gained national attention. The Space Coast Symphony Orchestra is reinventing the concept of a 21st-century orchestra by presenting the widest array of programming of any orchestra in Florida. Our focus is on creating programming that is balanced, accessible, innovative, and artistically expansive. Successfully growing our audience begins with what we bring to the stage, and continues with the ability to market and promote the Space and Treasure Coasts as cultural destinations. In any SCSO season, the audience can expect the best of what makes the SCSO a unique force in our community: the organization’s tradition of innovative programming, high-quality dynamic symphonic performances, active community engagement and commitment to arts education.

Since its founding in 2009, the SCSO has presented over eight hundred concerts throughout Central Florida. Amongst the SCSO’s greatest successes is the Symphony for Everyone program which enables anyone to attend any concert, no matter what their current financial situation. This nationally recognized program is the first of its kind. Locally, it has allowed more than 20,000 economically challenged individuals and families to attend a live symphonic concert. We are especially proud to serve our area’s young musicians with four distinct youth education programs: our Mentorship Program, which provides professional mentorship opportunities for students; our Free Student Tickets program that allows all students aged 18 and under free admittance to all of our concerts; our Youth Orchestra, a creative environment where over one hundred pre-college age musicians, ages 8-18, from every imaginable social, cultural, and economic background across Brevard and Indian River Counties come together to rehearse and perform classical symphonic masterworks and more.

Founded in 2012, Central Florida Vocal Arts and Opera del Sol exist to create a better Central Florida community through arts education, performance and appreciation. Thank you for joining us to celebrate our 10th Anniversary season! Central Florida Vocal Arts and Opera del Sol have a broad scope of goals that we address through our programs. Our current offerings, as well as our proposed future programs, all further a larger goal of re-imagining the future of performing arts. We believe we can build a better Central Florida community and even global community, through arts performance, education and appreciation. The foundation of our work is Education, through which we train and inspire artists of all ages, abilities and economic means. Students leave our programs with increased self esteem and other social emotional learning outcomes that positively impact their lives in innumerable ways. Our programs reach hundreds of students weekly including students in Title I schools in Orange and Osceola County, Pace Center for Girls, the Eatonville Boys & Girls Club and the Winter Park Library. Our educational programs aim to create a sustainable and diverse talent pipeline in Central Florida by overcoming systemic and economic barriers to access. The students we serve go on to lead and shape our community.

Our Mainstage productions provide a platform for professional performing artists and an opportunity for youth artists to emerge alongside these professionals. We intentionally select repertoire that incorporates youth actors or has an educational message and we prioritize bringing new works and regional premieres to Central Florida stages. We create an inclusive performance environment by presenting productions that appeal to diverse and modern audiences. Our sister company, Opera del Sol specifically aims to re-imagine who the operatic performer and audience member are, while we use our platform in performing arts to create tangible social good. Our original work, Requiem, which premiered at the 2021 Orlando Fringe Festival, targeted the devastating opioid crisis and allowed us to partner with Aspire Health and Advanced Recovery Systems to provide services to those in need. Opera del Sol collaborates with cross sector partners, including Lynx transportation, Sunrail and the City of Orlando to enhance the quality of life in Central Florida through performing arts We affirm that all people are artists and deserve access to quality arts experiences, regardless of income, race, gender identity, sexual orientation, learning disability, religious affiliation or age. Cheers to a new decade of outstanding and innovative arts education and performance!

Later that year, Alexis began performing on Holland America's Grand Asia Voyage and World tours. Seasonally, Smith tours the nation as a lead vocalist and keyboardist with the progressive rock band The Wizards of Winter. She would like to dedicate this performance to her best boys: Cameron and Duke. Annalycia Franklin began her professional career at Opera Orlando in 2016. She would like to thank her Vovo for inspiring her and CFVA for the opportunity! Christie Duffer recently earned her master’s in Vocal Performance from DePaul University in Chicago, packed her bags, and headed right back to the sunshine state. She is a lover of Musical Theatre and Opera, with her favorite roles being Musetta (La bohème), Laurey (Oklahoma!), Zerlina (Don Giovanni), and Elsa Schraeder (The Sound of Music). She was most recently seen as Marian (Bridges of Madison County) at Osceola Arts. Hailed for his electric conducting and the compelling insight of his musicianship, Aaron Collins continues to attract national attention and is one of the most outstanding American conductors working today. An award winning composer and conductor, Mr. Collins is making his mark in the music world and is recognized for his commitment to creative artistry, innovative programming, leadership, philanthropy, and audience and community engagement. Young and dynamic, he has established himself as one of the most gifted conductors, and musicians of his generation. Collins, a prolific composer, has written music for the stage and screen. Collins serves as Artistic Director and Conductor of the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra. In the past twelve years, Collins has served as conductor of the Space Coast Oratorio Society, the Pegasus and Colbourn Brass, Melbourne Community Orchestra, Community Band of Brevard, Space Coast Brass Ensemble, Trombonanza, Brevard Symphony Youth Orchestra, and Artistic Advisor to other local ensembles. Collins also guest conducts and works with ensembles in and around Florida. In addition, he serves on the Board of Directors of several other arts-based organizations, including serving as President of the Creative Arts Foundation of Brevard. He also serves on the the Cultural Committee of the Tourist Development Commision and on the Advisory Committee of the Brevard Zoo’s Aquarium project. Although Collins has a solid reputation as a conductor of the standard repertoire, he is most known for his work in new music. He programs 20th-century and new works on virtually every program he conducts. In addition, he is an ambassador of young composers, conducting world premieres throughout the year. Collins’ concern for music education and his recognition of the special role an orchestra can play in the community inspired the design and implementation of Symphony for Everyone program. Collins travels extensively, conducting orchestras throughout the United States. Some notable engagements include major orchestras in Dallas, Tulsa, Grand Rapids, Indianapolis, San Francisco, Tampa Bay, Jacksonville, San Jose, Atlanta, and Little Rock. Collins has also been recognized for his philanthropy and leadership, as the youngest winner of the ’4 under 40’ award presented by LEAD Brevard and also as one of Space Coast Business’ Most Admired People. In 2017, Collins was featured in Gramophone Magazine as one of “Five Conductors on the Rise.” In 2016, Collins won the Richard A. Stark Award for cultural leadership. Described as “the next big thing,” “a man on fire,” “one of the most promising conductors working today,” “an absolute powerhouse,” Collins maintains a schedule of more than 200 concerts a year.

Andy Stetzinger is a maker, 3D printing professional, podcaster, and a creative spirit. Andy brings his passion for creative making to CFVA and Opera del Sol. Born and raised in South America, his parents were active in musical theatre and passed along their love for performing arts. One of his earliest theatre memories is singing “Rumble, Rumble, Rumble” in third grade in Panama. Andy has lived in Orlando since 1989, and is actively involved in the maker community with MakerFX and the Maker Effects Foundation. After 10 years of running his own podcast studio, you can now find Andy teaching 3D printing classes and engaging in new creative endeavors throughout Central Florida. Coleen Rose Carlson is a 18 year veteran of Central Florida theatre, starting as an actress with Moonlight Players, before transitioning into a costuming career. She most recently celebrated the closing of her 5th season with Melon Patch Players in Leesburg. She's thrilled to be returning to CFVA, having previously costumed Nine and Melina. When Coleen isn't behind her machine, or hiding backstage at one of her many theatres, she runs A Mutant Called Wanda, and creates unique costumes and garments for many of Central Florida's cosplayers and burlesque artists. This show holds great meaning to Coleen, as she has spent the last 12 years of her life educating on The Holocaust across Central Florida, including an ongoing online series she began in early 2020. “AJ, this one, and every one after is for you. Break a leg, doll.” Robert started his career in theater and entertainment, having graduated the University of Miami’s BFA Theater Program and serving as resident sound designer, as well as working or performing on nearly every show in the historic Ring Theater during that time. Robert has started to find his way back to his original passion, after a 20+ year detour in the telecommunications field, supporting the performing arts in Central Florida through various efforts. He is excited to help set the scene for Sound of Music through sourcing stunning visual projections.
