INTRODUCTION

OVERVIEW The College Football Playoff (CFP) Foundation is the charitable arm of the College Football Playoff, using the popular platform of college football and the national championship game to support education across the country.

The CFP Foundation’s primary focus is teachers, expressed through the Extra Yard for Teachers (EYFT) platform, whose mission is to elevate the teaching profession by inspiring and empowering teachers through the implementation of programs in four focus areas: resources, recognition, recruitment and professional development.

Through events, programming and key partnerships, the CFP Foundation continues to make a positive impact across the country.

Extra Yard for Teachers Week is an eight-day period dedicated to celebrating teachers across the country. During the week of September 1623, 2017, the CFP Foundation asked the college football community to support teachers through recognition and resources.

Universities, conferences, bowls and other CFP Foundation partners participated by recognizing teachers at home football games, donating funds for classroom resources, promoting the cause on social media, and honoring educators.

AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE Each of the 12 member institutions in The American gave $10,000 to schools in the university’s local community for school supplies and other materials through DonorsChoose.org. An additional $10,000 was donated in conjunction with the conference’s football media day community service event in July. To conclude the season, the University of Central Florida and University of Memphis competed in the 2017 American Football Championship and each received an additional $10,000 grant to support local schools in an impactful way.

Throughout the season, support for Extra Yard for Teachers included in-game recognition of local teachers, coach and student-athlete testimonials about teachers on social media, and select classroom project requests funded through DonorsChoose.org. The week leading up to the Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship Game on December 2, included the funding of DonorsChoose.org projects in Charlotte and in the communities of the Atlantic and Coastal Division Champions; DonorsChoose.org gift cards given to the principals of each school that participated in the ACC United Way Reading Challenge; and, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Teacher of the Year finalists were recognized on the field and presented with gift cards as well.

BIG 12 CONFERENCE More than 100 student-athletes featured in the Big 12 Champions for Life campaign recognized a teacher who made a lasting impact during their academic journey. Each of these teachers received a $1,000 gift card from DonorsChoose.org and was featured in the student-athlete’s testimonial about how that teacher made a difference in his or her life.

These teachers were also given the opportunity to attend the Big 12 Football Championship game and be recognized on-field. Additionally, in conjunction with the conference’s women’s basketball championship in Oklahoma City, 30 teachers nominated by students as part of a “My Teacher, My Hero” promotion received $1,000 DonorsChoose.org gift cards and were recognized during halftime of a quarterfinal game.

In coordination with the 2017 Big Ten Football Championship Game in Indianapolis, the Big Ten and Indiana Sports Corp recognized 15 teachers from across the state. Each of the teachers (kindergarten through eighth grade) was awarded a grant through the Extra Yard for Teachers platform to enhance educational efforts in their respective classrooms and schools. The Big Ten also continued to support Literacy, Inc. and early childhood literacy programming in the five boroughs of New York City. Additionally, the conference revamped the multi-purpose room at Genevieve Melody STEM Elementary School in Chicago through the Extra Yard Classroom Makeover Project.

CONFERENCE USA Each C-USA member institution received $10,000 in gift cards from Michaels, a craft specialty retailer, and distributed to local teachers to purchase school supplies for their classrooms. The gift cards were given out on the field at home football games and promoted on social media and digital platforms. At the C-USA Football Championship on December 2, the host institution, Florida Atlantic University, granted an additional $1,000 Michaels gift card to a local school district.

The conference also announced a social media sweepstakes for all recipients to have the chance to win an additional Michaels gift card.

Each community surrounding the conference’s 12 universities was provided a $5,000 grant which was distributed to local elementary and secondary schools to provide classroom supplies, equipment or technology enhancements. In addition, through the support of the CFP Foundation, Cleveland Foundation and The George Gund Foundation, the MAC secured $1 million to support the Cleveland Metropolitan School District and TEACHing Cleveland, a program that focuses on teacher recruitment, mentoring and retention. These funds will be distributed over the next five years.

MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCE Seven Mountain West member institutions — Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State, San Jose State and UNLV — requested grants of up to $10,000 for donations to elementary and secondary schools to fund programs that make a direct impact on teachers and students in and around their communities. In addition, teachers within the Mountain West footprint submitted individual classroom project requests of up to $1,000 through DonorsChoose.org.

SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE Each week of college football season, SEC Nation, the SEC Network’s traveling pregame show, aired a feature story on a student-athlete who recognized a teacher who made a difference in his or her life. Each teacher’s school received a $10,000 grant to use towards classroom supplies and materials through DonorsChoose.org. In coordination with the 2017 SEC Football Championship at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, the CFP Foundation and SEC made an additional $10,000 donation to Atlanta Public Schools.

New Orleans teachers were offered the opportunity to participate in the Science of Sport, a program that generates new ways to connect science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to football, basketball and baseball. The aim is to use sports and hands-on learning to improve student interest and performance. This academic year’s programming began with a football centric event in September and was followed by basketball and baseball themed events in the spring. Each participant received lesson plans and equipment that enabled them to implement the curriculum at their schools and train fellow teachers.

UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME The University of Notre Dame and the CFP Foundation continue to make a significant impact in Notre Dame’s Alliance for Education (ACE) program. For the third consecutive year, Notre Dame used the CFP Foundation’s grant to drive a matching campaign that would support the work of the ACE program and to provide materials for high-need schools. A grand total of $514,424 was raised this year against the CFP Foundation’s grant for a total of over $664,000. Over the three year partnership, more than $2 million has been raised to support ACE.

GOODYEAR COTTON BOWL The Cotton Bowl Foundation and CFP Foundation each donated $100,000 to Catch Up & Read, a Dallas nonprofit, community-funded organization. Catch Up & Read is equipping at-risk elementary students to read on grade level by 3rd grade using research-based literacy and social emotional intervention. As a result of this joint donation, four more schools will have the opportunity to take part in Catch Up & Read’s programming in 2018. This is in addition to the seven schools the organization already serves.

In partnership with azcentral and the CFP Foundation, Fiesta Bowl Charities granted $700,000 worth of wishes in classrooms across the state of Arizona for new technology, renovated locker rooms, new musical instruments, sensory equipment for special education programs, 3D printers and much more. Granted $5,000 each, 140 teachers were able to make their classroom wish a reality. All 140 teachers and a guest were invited to attend the 29th Annual Cactus Bowl that included a special on-field check presentation at halftime. In just two years, over $1 million has been granted through this initiative.

CAPITAL ONE ORANGE BOWL Through the Orange Bowl Committee’s new Media Center Makeover Project, supported by funds from the CFP Foundation, elementary schools in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties were asked to submit a written statement of why their school should receive new equipment, furniture, technology and more for their school media centers. Winners were announced during the 2017 Capital One Orange Bowl, with a representative from each school in attendance. The CFP Foundation also supported the Orange Bowl Leadership Academy, a program designed to instill leadership qualities and promote self-efficacy among middle school students in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. In addition, the CFP Foundation and Orange Bowl partnered to support schools in the Florida Keys following Hurricane Harvey through DonorsChoose.org donations.

The Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl is located in Atlanta, GA, which also served as host to the 2018 CFP National Championship. To capitalize on this opportunity, the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl and CFP Foundation teamed up with the Atlanta Football Host Committee and Chick-fil-A Foundation to donate $2 million to Atlanta Public Schools (APS) over the next three years. These funds will enable 1,500 APS teachers to take part in professional development training on specialized reading curriculum to help thousands of elementary students learn to read at higher levels.

ROSE BOWL GAME PRESENTED BY NORTHWESTERN MUTUAL The Rose Bowl Game presented by Northwestern Mutual and the CFP Foundation partnered with the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association and the Pasadena Educational Foundation (PEF) to award grants to Pasadena Unified Schools District teachers and principals for classroom projects for the second consecutive year. In December, a total of 129 grants worth $178,072 were awarded to 158 teachers and 14 principals, ultimately benefitting thousands of students in Altadena, Pasadena and Sierra Madre. Beyond the grants to teachers, PEF awarded 14 schoolwide project grants, such as library revitalization projects, establishing a costume shop for performing arts programs, mural beautification projects, physical education equipment refresh, and promoting healthy lifestyles.

FLORIDA CITRUS SPORTS The CFP Foundation and Florida Citrus Sports, the organization that houses the Camping World Bowl and Citrus Bowl, made a significant positive impact through LIFT Orlando, a nonprofit dedicated to helping families in the Orlando area build a better life for themselves through education, housing, health and wellness and economic development. The partnership’s grant funds were used to support classroom projects through DonorsChoose.org and support early childhood education. Ten teachers were also recognized on-field at the two bowl games in addition to the Florida Blue Florida Classic.

AUTOZONE LIBERTY BOWL The AutoZone Liberty Bowl and CFP Foundation partnered for the second consecutive year to provide $200,000 to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital with the purpose of supporting the salaries of teachers who are educating and mentoring St. Jude patients. The joint grant makes it possible for full-time, dedicated teachers to provide quality education for patients and their siblings during treatment to ensure the students are able to continue in the appropriate grade after leaving St. Jude. In addition, the AutoZone Liberty Bowl hosted Memphis teachers and students at the bowl game in December in recognition of the Extra Yard for Teachers initiative.

Each year the CFP Foundation seeks to make a positive impact in the host city of the national championship game. Through a remarkable partnership, the CFP Foundation and the Atlanta Football Host Committee (AFHC) made a difference in the lives of thousands of teachers and students in the Atlanta area through the Extra Yard for Teachers platform.

The AFHC’s “All In” theme for the 2018 title game carried over to the host committee’s work with the CFP Foundation, investing $1 million into the Atlanta education system. These funds went to support classroom technology upgrades, scholar-athlete programs, and early literacy training for educators within the Atlanta Public Schools district.

AFHC also heavily supported the CFP Foundation’s Extra Yard for Teachers Week programming and championship weekend events, ensuring the Atlanta community recognized the extraordinary benefits that stemmed from hosting the 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship.

GAME CHANGER The CFP Foundation, with the support of local partners like the AFHC, launched an amazing new early literacy partnership forged through a three-year, $2 million grant to Atlanta Public Schools (APS). The grant is co-funded by CFP Foundation, the Chick-fil-A Foundation, Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl and the AFHC. It represented the single largest private donation made to APS in the last five years, and it will equip APS teachers with the skills they need to deliver effective literacy instruction to students.

Teacher training began last summer with specialized instruction for 500 APS kindergarten and first-grade teachers. The training focuses on the Orton-Gillingham approach to literacy, and the goal of the training is to ensure that all teachers feel confident teaching foundational early learning literacy skills to students, including phonemic awareness, vocabulary, phonics and fluency. The impact of this training will be measured annually, and it is expected that reading proficiency will increase to a minimum of 60 percent of APS students in the years to come.

The CFP Foundation’s Extra Yard Classroom Makeover Project also made its mark on the Atlanta area, transforming five classrooms into state-of-the-art, modern learning environments. School Specialty, Inc., featuring SSI Guardian, has been the CFP Foundation’s partner on this project for the past two years and provided $125,000 of in-kind donations for the classroom makeovers in Atlanta.

While two classroom makeovers took place in the fall, School Specialty also partnered with the CFP Foundation during championship weekend by holding classroom makeover giveaways at the Extra Yard for Teachers Summit and Extra Yard for Teachers Lounge. In total, five lucky Atlanta teachers had their classrooms transformed with essential supplies, curriculum materials, furniture and equipment, and security upgrades to promote learning experiences that will inspire their students for success.

Working with schools across the country on upgrading their classrooms has been a very humbling and rewarding experience for our School Specialty team. Teachers are the backbone of the education our nation’s children receive, and this is our way of giving back to those who work tirelessly and do a phenomenal job at supporting their students.”

TEACHER OF THE YEAR CHAMPIONSHIP EXPERIENCE PRESENTED BY DR PEPPER JANUARY 6 – 8, 2018 The CFP Foundation partners with the National Teacher of the Year Program, run by the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), to host an elite group of teachers during championship weekend through the Teacher of the Year Championship Experience presented by Dr Pepper. This group includes the State Teacher of the Year from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, the Department of Defense Education Activity and the U.S. territories.

The 2017 State Teachers of the Year made countless memories in Atlanta at CFP and CFP Foundation hosted events, including the Extra Yard for Teachers Lounge, Playoff Fan Central, Extra Yard for Teachers Summit, Extra Yard 5K, Taste of the Championship, and were also treated to VIP hospitality at the AT&T Playoff Playlist Live! concert series and Championship Tailgate event.

As the pinnacle of the weekend, the educators were recognized on the field prior to kickoff of the 2018 CFP National Championship in Mercedes-Benz Stadium in front of 77,430 attendees.

On Saturday afternoon, over 800 teachers were treated to a series of gripping, wide-ranging presentations at the EYFT Summit. The presentations included a performance by American Idol winner Phillip Phillips, a discussion of National Geographic explorations by TED Talks star Andres Ruzo, an inspiring message from Sydney Chaffee, 2017 National Teacher of the Year, as well as many other resonating speakers.

Participants went the extra yard for teachers on a chilly Sunday morning by walking or running in the fourth annual Extra Yard 5K. As a record crowd of participants took off on the 3.1-mile trek, including the 2017 State Teachers of the Year, the messaging reinforced that participants were supporting educators and the Extra Yard for Teachers platform by taking part in the event. Male Overall Winner, Rob Mullett (14:40), and Female Overall Winner, Bridget Lyons (17:23), were both awarded two tickets to the national championship game.

JANUARY 6 - 8, 2018 Playoff Fan Central is a threeday, family-friendly event that features games, clinics, pep rallies, band performances, special guest appearances, autograph signings and exhibits celebrating college football.

The 2017 State Teachers of the Year made a pitstop at the ESPN and CFP Foundation activation to help raise money for Atlanta Public Schools.

In partnership with ESPN, the Extra Yard for Teachers school bus made its second appearance at Playoff Fan Central, enticing fans to throw footballs into the bus through the rising and falling windows. Each football successfully thrown into the bus equaled $1 towards Atlanta Public Schools (APS). In all, over $10,000 was raised for APS teachers and students. In addition, TV screens at the activation featured the 2017 State Teachers of the Year, and ESPN talent Marcus Spears, Jordan Rodgers, Dari Nowkah, Peter Burns and Gene Chizik signed autographs for eager fans.

A perfect mix of football and education, the activation drew in 21,500 visitors.

JANUARY 8, 2018 Eckrich and its Smithfield Foods parent company hosted the Eckrich Million Dollar Challenge within the Championship Tailgate footprint just a few hours before the national championship game. This football throw challenge gives a fan the opportunity to win $1 million if he or she hits the target located 20 yards away. In the months leading up to championship weekend, the sausage and deli meat maker upped the ante, offering another $1 million to the CFP Foundation and its Extra Yard for Teachers platform if ESPN analyst — and former college quarterback — Kirk Herbstreit nailed the target, too. Although Herbstreit missed the official first toss, he nailed the third throw and Eckrich officials agreed on the spot to make a $500,000 donation to the CFP Foundation.

JANUARY 8, 2018 The culmination of championship weekend was the 2018 CFP National Championship in Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The 2017 State Teachers of the Year were recognized on the field as part of the pregame pageantry and remained as President Trump entered and the Zac Brown Band sang the national anthem. Cheered by 77,430 fans, the honorees soaked in every moment of the well-deserved attention. The CFP Foundation also recognized the $2 million donation to Atlanta Public Schools (APS) in partnership with the Atlanta Football Host Committee, Chick-fil-A Foundation and Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl for the teacher literacy training initiative. The evening ended with the University of Alabama clutching the national championship trophy and the CFP Foundation concluding a very successful and impactful weekend in Atlanta.
