Like many of these institutions of higher learning, TCU has looked to identify and overcome barriers for student-athletes and develop new courses and programs. The Go Teach project is another fantastic avenue for these young adults to consider when looking towards a career.

“Many student-athletes hold characteristics and skills that we look for in future teachers and coaches, such as dedication and passion for education and the ability to inspire and motivate students in the classroom,” said Jan Lacina, associate dean of graduate studies at TCU.

STUDENT-ATHLETES SETTING EXAMPLES FOR STUDENTS ↑ TEAMING UP

Emporia State is another recent university added to the lineup of Go Teach efforts — the first NCAA Division II school to partner with the CFP Foundation on the project.

THE UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME

Notre Dame activates Go Teach by giving studentathletes opportunities to showcase their leadership in a classroom through the Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE). Some recent examples include: + Skylar (Women’s Swim & Dive) sent an intro video to middle schoolers in New Orleans, who responded by practicing their formal email writing skills. + Middle school students in Denver each wrote letters to Victoria (Women’s Rowing) to become old-fashioned pen-pals. + Rhianna (Women’s Swim & Dive) led a read-aloud over Zoom to third graders in Dallas. + Cameron (Women’s Tennis) shared an “About Me” video with fifth graders in Jacksonville. + The Go Teach project includes the sponsorship of books for ACE Classroom Connections. ACE Classrooms around the country are encouraged to request a book through the Notre Dame ACE program.

Books are then sent to both ACE teachers and ND student-athletes.

COACH TAGGART'S TOUCHDOWN READERS

Coach (Willie) Taggart’s Touchdown Readers program at Florida Atlantic is designed to encourage elementary and middle schoolage students (K-8) to continue reading over the summer. FAU football studentathletes also participated, joining kids virtually to read with them. With a goal of four grade-level-appropriate books read over the summer, Coach Taggart’s Touchdown Readers promotes reading and learning, and students who complete the program are able to claim two tickets to an FAU football game.

SEPTEMBER 2020 HONOREE

Sandy Lemmink

W

hen one of her students was diagnosed with cancer in the fall of 2019, Sandy Lemmink, a first-grade teacher at Clough Pike Elementary School in Cincinnati, Ohio, faced a challenge that millions of other teachers would soon confront: how to bring the classroom to a student who can’t be there in person.

Because of first-grader Noah’s compromised immune system, he couldn’t attend school even when he was out of the hospital. Nevertheless Lemmink was committed to making sure school was a constant for Noah during a difficult time.

“My role is to love on kids and to teach them. And sometimes it’s to teach them that they can get through it,” Lemmink said.

Lemmink devised two ways to keep Noah an active part of the classroom. First, she volunteered to go to his home several times a week to offer one-on-one tutoring. When Noah was hospitalized, she traveled the 30 minutes downtown to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital to work with Noah in his hospital room.

Secondly, Lemmink installed a web camera so that Noah could partake in daily live instruction with his classmates. The camera allowed Noah to tune in from wherever he was, raise his hand, ask questions, and respond to his peers. Lemmink adapted her instruction to maximize engagement with her virtual student.

In the spring of 2020 when schools closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, Lemmink and her students were already seasoned veterans at distance learning.

“Little did we know, back in September, that in March Noah would be the one telling everyone else, ‘You can do it. If I can do it from a hospital, you can do it from your couch,’” Lemmink said.
