of the work of the College Football Playoff Foundation and its numerous partners. As you can see, we were able to expand our impact and programming without straying from our fundamental mission – supporting teachers. Thanks to the support from conferences, universities, bowls, ESPN, the Bay Area Host Committee, and so many other partners, we have achieved remarkable results that positively impact teachers all across the country. Whether it involved training teachers to teach early reading in Atlanta, supporting thousands of teachers’ wishes on DonorsChoose.org, or seeing the expressions of countless children as they entered their newly renovated learning spaces, our work is far-reaching.

YEAR I N R E V IE W: LE T TE R F R OM BR IT TON

We are pleased to share this 2018 – 2019 Year in Review, which represents a snapshot

Words can’t express the gratitude we have for the many organizations that continue to share our vision and support our work. While it is rewarding to look back, our sights are clearly set on the future as we launch our Go Teach Project and design our plans in New Orleans, as well as expand our strategies to support teachers – wherever they are. Together, we are making a difference. Warmest Regards,

ANNUAL OVERVIEW The College Football Playoff (CFP) Foundation is the community investment arm of the College Football Playoff. The CFP Foundation was formed in 2014 with the introduction of the new playoff

$28 MILLION

system to make a significant difference by using the platform of college football. Through deep

in support of education

collaboration with the organizations responsible for college football, our collective impact

230,000

continues to rapidly expand. The mission of the CFP Foundation is to support PreK through 12th grade students by supporting their teachers, the single most important determinant in student achievement. The CFP Foundation’s primary platform, Extra Yard for Teachers (EYFT), is dedicated to elevating the teaching profession by inspiring and empowering teachers in four focus areas: resources, recognition, recruitment, and professional development. Since its inception and with the help of many partners, the CFP Foundation has made a substantial positive impact.

HONORING TEACHERS Extra Yard for Teachers Week is a week-long period during which universities, conferences, and ESPN come together to celebrate and recognize teachers across the country. Throughout the week of September 15-22, 2018, the college football community went out of its way to let teachers know they are valued and respected. The results were remarkable as 73 of the CFP Foundation’s partners recognized teachers at home football games, through organic social media, donating funds for classroom resources, and simply by honoring teachers.

TRANSFORMING LEARNING Through its classroom makeover initiative and with the help of School Specialty, Inc. and others, the CFP Foundation continued to expand its work in transforming libraries in communities all across the country. In this year alone, ten schools from Miami to San Francisco received the gift of a makeover. A transformed learning environment can result in enthusiastic learners.

S H A R I N G S T O R I E S O F G R E AT T E A C H E R S The transformative power of an effective teacher is something almost all have experienced and understand on a personal level. Teachers matter more to student achievement than any other aspect of schooling. Many factors contribute to a student’s academic performance, but research suggests that among school-related factors, teachers have the most impact. This year saw the launch of the CFP Foundation’s It Only Takes One initiative. The messaging of the campaign is designed to utilize the authentic stories of well-known influencers to lift up the profession of teaching. Each story is about the one teacher who made the greatest impact on their lives. The CFP Foundation will continue to tell amazing stories that highlight the influence and value of a great teacher.

“The teacher that had the biggest impact on me is Jean Froman. I would just pull up a chair and sit next to her at the front of the class and we would just talk about life. She gave me a lot of encouragement and took an interest in me. Most kids, that’s what they’re looking for.” – Troy Aikman, UCLA Bruins – College Football Hall of Fame

Their effort to pull together a coalition of national organizations and universities to address the issue is a smart approach, and ACE is proud to be helping in the effort.” – Ted Mitchell, American Council on Education President

A D D R E S S I N G T E A C H E R S H O R TA G E S T O G E T H E R For the second year in a row, the CFP Foundation has served as a co-convener of a coalition focused on the recruitment and retention of educators in subject and geographical areas with shortages. These organizations came together to support states in developing data-driven, teacher-informed strategies to address their specific workforce challenges. The teacher shortage problem is urgent but the solution lies in collective responsibility. By bringing together key stakeholders and their proven approaches and resources, states are working to make sure every student has access to great teaching.

G R E AT S T U D E N T-AT H L E T E S M A K E G R E AT T E A C H E R S There is a current and future teacher shortage in many different teaching fields and in many communities across the country. Students associated with college athletic programs offer a pool of individuals who reflect the desired characteristics and skills to be prime targets for recruitment into the field of teaching. The current population of student-athletes reflects the diversity we hope to eventually see reflected in the educator workforce. By providing athletic and academic departments a platform to assist with the marketing and recruitment of student-athletes and other students into the teaching profession, the Go Teach project can make an immediate impact across the country. The more qualified

candidates who enroll in teacher preparation programs, the more great teachers will be in the classroom.

The Go Teach Project is the CFP Foundation’s effort to align universities through athletics to better market the teaching profession to student-athletes and other students. It is a win for athletics and student-athletes, a win for the universities, and for local communities in need of qualified teachers.
