Friends, It’s taken a lot of people to make The Community Foundation the valuable community resource that it is today. Donors’ support helps us grow and do more across the county. Grantees put grant funds to good use to make the community a place people choose to live. Volunteers give their time to lead the organization on the Board of Directors and to guide our growth and grantmaking by serving on our Finance, Investment, Grants, Scholarships, and other committees.

With the support of the people around us, 2019 was a year of development for the Foundation. Our Investment Committee celebrated a history of wise investing. That, paired with our donors making more than 1,100 gifts, helped us reach a new high mark on our endowment - $66 Million.

With the future in mind, the Finance Committee made a difficult decision that will reduce our spending policy allocation to protect our assets.

They recommended an approach that reduced the percent available annually from 4.5 percent to 4.0 percent over five or more years based on market performance. This approach ensures that the dollar amount of grantmaking remains consistent during the transitional time. In 2019, the spending policy was 4.4 percent.

Collectively, our Grants Committees reviewed dozens of applications to award $992,055 in Competitive Grants, $190,000 in Strategic Grants, and $17,977 in Robert P. Bell Education Grants. Our Scholarship Committees recommend $204,763 in scholarship to students from across county. The Foundation granted more than $3 Million in 2019.

This year, the Foundation was awarded a planning grant for community leadership from

Lilly Endowment Inc. Our Board of Directors guided us through a series of activities designed to gather community feedback on our most vital roles in the community. In 2019, we said goodbye to Board Members Michael B. Galliher, who will continue to serve on the Finance Committee, and Leland C. Wilhoite, who will continue to serve on the Competitive Grants Committee. We welcomed to the Board Magi Kirkpatrick Sikora, who serves on the Foundation’s Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Committee, and Casey Stanley, a member of the Foundation’s Finance Committee.

In this report, we’ll introduce you to a few of the Faces of the Foundation. They are volunteers who serve on our Board and our Committees. They are your neighbors and friends. Through their service to the Foundation, they work with us to enhance the quality of life in Muncie and Delaware County.

Carol was born and raised in Muncie and attended Ball State University. She moved away after finishing college but gladly returned more than two decades ago to be closer to family. Carol found comfort in returning to a community where she felt connected and could make an impact. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for Cardinal Greenway, Youth Opportunity Center, and MutualBank Charitable Foundation. She’s an avid fan of all thing’s sports, frequently attending sporting events at Ball State University and throughout the community. She joked that she has become “Aunt Carol” to many of her friends and their families because she always loves attending their events.

“Muncie is a great place to live, and I truly believe it is what you make it,” Carol shared.

“The community continues to grow and adapt to change, and I love living here and being a part of the change.”

Being responsive and adaptive to the community’s changing needs is at the core of the existence of The Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County.

“When you give to The Community Foundation, you’re not just giving for today. You’re supporting it in the future,” Carol said.

Molly Flodder

Nonprofit Experience to Support Community Grantmaking Giving back to the community is not new for Molly Flodder. She’s been an active community volunteer for most of the more than 40 years she has lived in Muncie.

Through her work at TEAMwork, Molly was used to connecting struggling families to community allies and organizations with programs that might help them meet their goals of self-sufficiency.

Molly’s husband, Mark, built the home they share along the White River just outside of Muncie. They have two adult daughters, Maggie and Mallory, who have close connections to home working at Ball Memorial Hospital. Molly and Mark are the proud grandparents of four – two sets of twins. Among several community activities in which she volunteers, Molly is co-director of survivor voices, a choir of cancer survivors and caregivers.

In addition to giving her time and talent as a Foundation volunteer, Molly, and Mark, financially support the organization.

“I appreciate the macro-focus of the Foundation,” said Molly. “To be a part of the Foundation, you are reminded that there are so many caring organizations and people who make up the rich fabric of our community.”

Jeff and Beth Lang relocated to Delaware County with their two young daughters in 1995. Jeff began his role as the Chief Financial Officer of Maxon Corporation. While Jeff’s parents instilled strong community values, his role at Maxon pushed him to get involved in his new community.

Today Jeff continues to volunteer on the Investment Committee and the Strategic Grants Committee. He also serves as Chair of the Foundation Fund Committee. The Maxon Foundation Fund was established at The Community Foundation when Maxon Corporation was purchased. A committee of former Maxon executives and approved committee members review grant applications and make grant recommendations to the Board of Directors once each year.

Jeff and Beth established the Jeff and Beth Lang Fund in 2013. This fund is unrestricted to The Community Foundation, which allows the Foundation to use those funds to respond to the needs of the community at any time, even in the future where the needs will look very different from today.

“The Foundation’s knowledge of the community needs will always be timely and allow our fund to meet the community’s needs now and into the future,” said Jeff.

Aileen Howard

Life-Long Learner Gives Time to Support Student Success After spending much of her adult life away, Aileen Howard returned to Muncie 11 years ago to be close to her brother and a few special high-school friends.

“Coming back to Muncie seemed like going back to my roots,” said Aileen about her decision to come back to the community where she had grown up.

Upon her return, Aileen reconnected with old friends, joined social and volunteer organizations to meet new friends, and was encouraged by those friends to do even more.

She is a member of the Association of LifeLong Learners and the McRae Club. As a member of First Presbyterian Church, Aileen spends time each week attending meetings and choir practice, preparing statistical reports for church records, and serving with fellow parishioners as a volunteer at South View Elementary School. She also actively participates in her neighborhood

association, attends a weekly current events discussion group, and takes part in a book club at the Muncie Public Library. Aileen noted the great community assets that Ball State University provides. She utilizes the adult fitness center, regularly attends concerts and performances across campus, and specifically highlighted the wonderful music and theatre department.

If that wasn’t enough to keep her busy, Aileen serves as a volunteer on The Community Foundation’s Scholarship Committee.

Last year, the Foundation awarded more than $204,763 in scholarships to 73 students in 2019.

Community-minded donors established the 51 scholarship funds managed by the Foundation and set the criteria for the awards. Each year, Scholarship Committee members review dozens of applications from students across the community and make recommendations for the awards.

“Many, many young people in our community are gifted, talented, and devoted,” said Aileen. “I wish we were able to give scholarships to even more students.

It’s a real responsibility as a committee member to make sure you have selected the best out of a group of great students.

Scholarships can make a difference in the lives of the students who receive them.”

Through her work on the Scholarship Committee, Aileen sees the impact the Foundation can have on students as well as on the whole community.

“I look for ways to contribute to make an impact now and long-term,” said Aileen.

While Waylon has been engaged in the community since coming to Muncie as a Ball State University student, he didn’t know much about The Community Foundation beyond Bell Grants until he began volunteering on the committee.

“I didn’t realize how big the Foundation is,” said Waylon. “I’m constantly asking if there is more I can do for my students? Or is there another resource out there that they could learn from. The Foundation is a valuable resource in our community for students, teachers, and many others.”

From supporting community-based organizations, like those that the Shaffers enjoy, to supporting teachers and their students, the Foundation helps donors – big and small – make an impact today, and always.

“I hope more and more people realize that even in small ways, we can keep making a difference,” said Waylon.

In addition to this service to The Community Foundation and Muncie Community Schools, Mark is on the Board of Directors for Animal Rescue Fund (ARF) and participates on the Emens Scholars Selection Committee at Ball State University.

“It is really important to give back to the community that has been good to me and my family,” Mark shared. “It is important to give back to others, and to the extent that I have skills to share, I’m glad to do it.”

Mark is not only a volunteer to the Foundation, but he and his wife, Molly, are annual financial supporters of the Community Foundation. They choose to give both to The Unrestricted Fund and to funds that benefit the organizations and causes that matter most to them, including the Liberty Perry Selma Town Endowment Fund. Mark was on the Foundation’s board and living in Selma when the fund was established in 2012. Annually, grants are made from the fund to nonprofit organizations serving the residents of Liberty Township, Perry Township, and Town of Selma. Today, Mark is

still excited by the potential to impact those communities, not only for today but for the future.

“There are few opportunities in life to make a difference, and The Community Foundation affords that opportunity,” Mark shared.

“It supplies a vehicle to provide support for something that will have a lasting impact right in one’s own backyard.”
