Small Screws, Grand Vision:
The Spirit of Craftsmanship Behind YOUSUN
n the intricate network of global manufacturing, fasteners, though small in size, are widely known in China as the "rice of industry". The development of Haiyan Yousun Enterprise Co., Ltd. ("Yousun") exemplifies this transformation, evolving from scale expansion to value enhancement. By successfully transitioning from trade to manufacturing, Yousun has carved out a distinct competitive edge in the global market through strategic focus and specialized expertise in screws. Yo u s un f a c t o r y i s s p e c i a l i z e d i n p r o d u c i n g wood timber screws, chipboard screws and dr ywall screws, bimetal screws and any customized high-end screws.
From Commercial Links to ManufacturingCentered Approaches
Yousun was spun off from CHINFAST in 2009 as a fully owned subsidiary, in response to supply chain fluctuations, rising costs, and product commercialization. By leveraging the local industrial cluster, the company evolved from a pure trader into an integrated enterprise with end-toend R&D, production, and sales capabilities. This shift not only strengthened its manufacturing foundation but also generated significant "1+1>2" synergies between trading and manufacturing, forming a sustainable engine for global expansion. With a team of over 70 people and around 150 sets of equipment, Yousun currently produces 1,000 tons monthly. The company is now pivoting towards a grander vision of intelligent manufacturing. The cornerstone of this vision is

a new factory slated to commence in 2027, which will not only double output to 2,000 tons but also house its own heat treatment line, a cutting-edge lab, and an R&D hub. All dedicated to one single goal: crafting China's premier small screws.
Yousun Contact: Vicky Email: vicky@yousunfastener.com
The Premium Positioning: An Anchor of Value Amid Uncertainty
Despite turbulence in global trade and the reshaping of supply chains, Yousun is doubling down on a clear and confident strategy: a deeper push into the high-end fasteners' industry. The company's decision leverages its unique edge, particularly the benefit of the EU's AD676 average tax rate and ownership of several essential patents for small screws. Yousun's management believes enduring success in demanding markets comes from being tested and trusted. Rather than chasing every trend, the company concentrates it s resources on for tif ied, high-value segment s. Each innovation and quality upgrade strengthens its premium market position through a disciplined strategy: focused impact over broad reach, and victory by capability, not luck.
Riding the Twin Waves of Green and Intelligence
Yousun is ac tively advancing it s green and smar t transformation to meet global standards like the EU's CBAM. Key initiatives include pursuing Green Factory and ISO14001 cer tifications, tracking high-performance materials and digital technologies, and strengthening resilience of supply chain. The company is also enhancing cross-functional collaboration while investing in talent development and intellectual property to build long-term competitiveness. As one of the key enterprises in China's fastener industry, Yousun is confident that China will remain a vital global manufacturing hub in the next decade. The company believes the industry's sustainable growth depends on shifting from quantitative expansion to qualitative excellence. Guided by this philosophy, Yousun focuses on upstream industrial chain integration and core technology development, forging a path of "upward breakthrough" through specialization and sustainable practices.

UK and EU introduce tougher steel import measures
The UK and European Union have introduced major new steel trade measures, marking one of the most significant shifts in European steel policy in recent years as governments seek to protect domestic producers from surging imports and global overcapacity.
B
oth regimes came into force on 1st July 2026, replacing long-standing safeguard measures with strengthened tariff rate quota (TRQ) systems designed to support local steel production while maintaining access to essential imported materials.
UK cuts tariff-free import quotas by more than half
The UK government's new steel trade measure reduces tariff-free steel import quotas by 51% compared with the previous safeguard system. Imports exceeding the revised quotas will now be subject to a 50% tariff, replacing the safeguard arrangements that expired on 30th June. The measures apply to steel produc t s that can be manufactured in the UK and form part of the government's wider Steel Strategy, first announced in March. Ministers say the policy is designed to strengthen domestic steelmaking, safeguard critical supply chains and bolster industries including construction, infrastructure and defence. The UK government reports that the new system follows months of consultation with steel producers, downstream manufacturers, and international partners, including the European Union. Officials argue the changes are necessary because of persistent global overcapacity in steel production, which has led to large volumes of lower priced imports entering international markets. The UK says maintaining a viable domestic steel sector is vital for national resilience and security. Alongside the revised quotas the UK government has introduced exemptions for certain specialist steel products that are not manufactured domestically, helping manufacturers that rely on imported materials unavailable from UK producers – removing 11 individual commodity codes. The principal bar, rod and wire categories used by the fastener industry remain 50

within scope. A transitional arrangement will also protect businesses importing steel under contracts signed before 14th March 2026, allowing qualifying shipments to enter without the new tariff until the end of September.
European Union adopts revised steel trade framework
At the s ame time, the European Commis sion has introduced a new steel trade measure to replace the EU's safeguard regime, with the aim of strengthening the resilience and competitiveness of the European steel sector. The new framework reduces tariff-free import quotas to approximately 18.3 million tonnes per year, representing a 47% reduction compared with the previous system. Steel imports exceeding those quotas will also face a 50% duty. According to the Commission, the measure is intended to address the continuing challenge of global steel overcapacity, which has resulted in increasing volumes of diverted imports entering the European market. The new rules cover 30 categories of steel products, including wire rod, stainless wire rod, stainless wire, cold draw wire, alloy bars, as well as stainless bars, and introduce strengthened origin requirements through the 'melted and poured' principle, helping to ensure imported products cannot circumvent the measures by undergoing limited processing in third countries before entering the EU. The Commission said the revised system seeks to strike a balance between protecting European steel producers from unfair market pressures while preserving access to imported steel for traditional trading par tners and downstream manufacturing industries.
A coordinated response
Although introduced separately, the UK and EU measures reflect a common approach to addressing the challenges facing the steel industry. Both systems significantly reduce tariff-free import quotas while increasing tariffs on volumes exceeding those allocations. Both also cite persistent global overcapacity, market distortion caused by lower priced imports and the strategic importance of maintaining domestic steel production for critical supply chains. For downstream sectors, including the fastener industry, the measures are expected to encourage greater use of domestically produced steel where available, while increasing the importance of careful procurement planning as quota allocations become more limited.

He specifically singled out machine tool manufacturing. "The equipment, we have created, includes specialized riveting machines that allow for the rapid assembly of aircraft fuselages and wings. Such technologies were previously available to only three countries. And now, in addition to building our own aircraft, we also build them using our own equipment," Alikhanov said. The automated rivet setting system is a new product from the engineering company Aviation Consulting-TECHNO. Riveted joints are currently the primary fastener for aircraft structures. Most rivets are installed manually. According to open sources, only 25-30% of rivets, installed by leading foreign aircraft manufacturers, are installed automatically. In the domestic aircraft industry, this figure is significantly lower.

Today, the METSAN plant is a major global manufacturer, ranked among the top 5 global full-cycle manufacturers of chemical anchors. "What's unique about our business is that the plant's products are sold primarily under partner brands (OEMs), rather than under our own brand," - noted Grigory Berkut, Head of the METSAN plant's export office in Russia and CEO of EMS FORCE RUS LLC, in an interview with Alexander Ostashov, Chief editor of "Fasteners, adhesives, tools and…" magazine. - "Our products are in high demand. All other global manufacturers are located in Europe and are currently experiencing difficulties with regular deliveries." Regarding the issue of localizing chemical anchor production, Grigor y Berkut emphasized the product range and quality: "Almost all manufacturers that have emerged in Russia produce chemical anchors exclusively using epoxy resin. Meanwhile, the hardener, high-quality epoxy compounds, and even the tubes are imported. Without the manufacture of chemical components, this is not the most complex technological production. Russian epoxy components are not yet of sufficient quality to produce high-quality Pure EPOXY. As a result, the market is filled with compounds with the same name but completely different characteristics. Consumers are accustomed to considering Pure EPOXY as the standard, but actual quality depends on the specific manufacturer. Furthermore, epoxy compounds have limitations and do not meet all needs."

ASSESSMENT
Türkiye Fastener Industry
T
he fastener industry in Türkiye is a horizontal link within the industrial supply chain. Millions of vehicles in the automotive industry, millions of structural components in construction, millions of tons of production in the iron and steel industry, and high-tech products in the aerospace sector continuously generate demand for fasteners with different specifications. Therefore, the performance of the sector should not be assessed solely based on its own production volume, but also in relation to the per formance of the major industries it supplies. In Türkiye's fastener trade, HS Code 7318 ser ves as the main reference point. This tariff heading covers screws, bolts, nuts, coach screws, screw hooks, rivets, cotters, cotter pins, washers and similar products made of iron or steel. Trade Map data included in the Turkish Ministr y of Trade's 2025 country profiles show that Türkiye's expor t s in the HS Code 7318 produc t group reached approximately USD 776 million in 2024. For example, Switzerland's imports of products under HS Code 7318 from around the world amounted to USD 530.2 million in 2024, while Türkiye's exports to Switzerland stood at only USD 7.4 million. This indicates that there is still significant untapped export potential for Türkiye in the European market. The geographical distribution of Türkiye's fastener exports also highlights the sector's Europeoriented structure. Germany remained Türkiye's largest market, with approximately USD 280 million in exports, while increases were also recorded in markets such as France, Italy and the United Arab Emirates. In contrast, exports to the United States declined during the same period. One of the sector's most significant advantages is its geographical proximity to Europe, as well as its access to strong customer industries such as automotive, household appliances, machinery, construction and energy. At the same time, Türkiye's fastener industry faces intense cost competition from major Asian producers, particularly China and Taiwan. Price pressure is especially high in standard products. Therefore, it does not appear sustainable for Türkiye to base its competitive advantage solely on low production costs. High-strength products, special component s, automotive fastener s,
specialized products for the energy sector, stainless steel fasteners, advanced coating technologies and engineering solutions are expected to become increasingly important for the sector's future growth. Another advantage for Türkiye's fastener industry is the diversity of its export markets. Trade shipment data shows that Turkish fastener exports are distributed across a wide range of countries, with Russia, Central Asia, the Middle East and North Africa offering important oppor tunities alongside the European market. At the same time, geopolitical developments, freight costs, EU trade policies, anti-dumping measures and carbon regulations are directly influencing the sector's export strategy.

FEATURED COMPANY Wenzhou Fengding:
Focusing on the Flange Bolt Segment, Carving a Niche in Flange Bolts to Weather Industry Cycles - An Interview with Huang Rongsheng, General Manager of Wenzhou Fengding Fastener Manufacturing Co., Ltd.
I
n 2026, as homogeneous competition in the fastener industry becomes increasingly fierce, one company remains steadfastly on its chosen path. Wenzhou Fengding Fastener Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has stayed deeply rooted in the niche flange bolt segment, steadily navigating industry cycles with a "small but specialized, focused and resilient" approach. From it s Wenzhou headquar ters to its Jiang xi production base, and from traditional manufacturing to products for the new energ y sector, how has Fengding built dif ferentiated competitiveness through specialization? With these questions in mind, CFM inter viewed Huang Rongsheng, general m a n a g e r o f W e n z h o u F e n g d i n g Fa s t e n e r Manufacturing Co., Ltd.
Focus on Flange Bolts
Over the past two years, competition in the fastener industr y has intensified, with persistent price wars and commoditization. Huang said Fengding remains committed to t h e sp e c iali ze d f lange b o lt r o u te, avoiding b lin d expansion of its product range and instead fortifying its core competencies.
62
CFM - Issue 47 -Sep. 2026
The company has steadily implemented its two-base production layout in Wenzhou and Jiangxi, continuously improving automated production lines, upgrading core processes such as heat treatment and surface treatment, and focusing on enhancing product consistency. At the same time, it has increased R&D investment to develop customized flange fasteners for demanding applications such as new energy and automotive components. On the operational side, Fengding enforces stringent qualit y control, optimizes deliver y lead times, retains high-quality customers in China, and steadily expands its export business. Against a challenging industry backdrop, the company has achieved steady growth by relying on differentiated products. "We have always believed that only by focusing on a niche segment and refining product quality can a company ride out industry cycles," Huang emphasized.
Wenzhou-Jiangxi Dual-Base Synergy
Discussing Fengding's long-term strategic layout of two production bases in Wenzhou and Jiangxi, Huang introduced the positioning and capacity division of each site. The Wenzhou headquarters serves as the operations and R&D center, mainly responsible for new product development, sampling and prototyping, production of high-end orders, and commercial coordination with domestic and international customers. Leveraging Wenzhou's well-developed supply chain, the Wenzhou base can quickly respond to sample requests and small-batch, high-end orders, focusing on flange bolts with high technical barriers.
Deep Roots in Automotive and New Energy Sectors
Jiangxi Fengding Technology, meanwhile, is positioned as a large-scale mass production base with extensive plant facilities, mainly handling high-volume, mature orders. By capitalizing on regional and energy advantages, it leverages production scale to effectively reduce manufacturing costs and deliver stable high-volume supply. The two sites complement each other: Wenzhou focuses on R&D and high-precision orders, while Jiangxi handles high-volume production. This creates a structure in which new products can be iterated quickly and large orders can be delivered reliably, with dual-base synergy ensuring supply for customers at home and abroad.
Overcoming Three Key Flange Face Technical Challenges
Compared with standard hex bolts, the core technical challenges of flange bolts are concentrated in the flange face. Huang analyzed them from three perspectives. First, flange head forming: the flange face must be flat and uniform, with no folds, laps or underfill. Second, heat treatment: because the flange and the shank dif fer significantly in section thickness, quenching can easily produce uneven hardness and residual stress, directly affecting fatigue performance. Third, coating thickness uniformity on the flange bearing sur face mus t be controlled, as it direc tly af fec t s the consistency of corrosion protection. After years of process know-how accumulation, Fengding has developed its own technical strengths. In cold heading, the company uses a progressive extrusion process to ensure a flat and smooth flange face. In heat treatment, it applies zoned temperature control to reduce hardness deviation between the surface and the core. It has also optimized the pre-plating degreasing process to ensure uniform coating coverage across all areas of the flange. For high-strength property class 10.9 and property class 12.9 flange bolts, Fengding is able to ensure anti-loosening and fatigueresistant per formance with good product consistency, earning recognition from OEM customers.
Fengding's products are mainly used in passenger car components, new energy motors, PV inverters, construction machinery, power distribution cabinets and related electrical accessories. Among these, automotive chassis and traction motors are key segments for the company. Huang pointed out that motors are subject to longterm high-frequency vibration, making flange bolts highly prone to loosening. By optimizing thread parameters and heat treatment processes, Fengding's products have passed vibration durability tests of more than 10,000 cycles and can meet long-term anti-loosening requirements. Several component manufacturers have used Fengding's products on a long-term basis, reporting low failure rates and excellent batch-to-batch consistency. In the PV industr y, outdoor service conditions involve large temperature differentials and impose stringent requirements on corrosion protection and clamping performance. Fengding's customized high-strength flange fasteners can adapt to complex long-term outdoor environments. Thanks to consistent quality, Fengding has gained a large number of long-term customers.
Three-Dimensional Upgrades to Match Emerging Fields
To meet the higher requirements for strength, corrosion resistance, lightweighting and consistency in emerging fields such as new energy, automotive lightweighting, PV energy storage and industrial automation, Fengding has carried out targeted upgrades in three areas: materials, heat treatment and surface corrosion protection. For raw materials, the company selects high-quality alloy steel and strictly controls impurities. In heat treatment, it has upgraded to continuous mesh-belt quenching and tempering lines with real-time temperature control, narrowing the hardness fluc tuation range of each batch and fur ther improving fatigue life. For surface treatment, in addition to conventional zinc plating, it has developed coating processes with high salt-spray resistance to meet the long-term corrosion protection needs of PV and outdoor equipment.

FEATURED COMPANY
In te r ms of lig ht weig ht ing , Fe ngding wor k s w it h customers to optimize flange geometry, saving material while ensuring joint safety. At the same time, the company has strengthened full-process quality inspection by adding tensile testing machines, salt spray chambers and metallographic inspection equipment, consistent and verifiable, in line with stringent industry standards.
Expanding into Overseas Markets
At present, Fengding's exports are mainly sold to Europe, South Korea and other regions, with customers consisting primarily of traders and component processors. Relying on its specialization in flange bolts and consistent quality, the company is gradually building its reputation overseas. Regarding future over seas expansion, Huang said Fengding will continue to deepen its presence in mature market s in Europe and Nor th America, while steadily exploring Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Latin America. As the new energy industry grows rapidly overseas, demand for flange fasteners is strong, making it a key target segment for Fengding. In terms of channels, Fengding will actively participate in overseas fastener trade shows, use industry platforms to connect with end customers, and gradually reduce intermediate layers by engaging directly with overseas manufacturers.
64
CFM - Issue 47 -Sep. 2026
Future Outlook
Looking ahead to the next three to five years, Huang made it clear that Fengding will remain committed to the specialized path of flange fastener manufacturing. Shanghai Fast-Fix:
Riveting Solutions for High-End Manufacturing, Anchoring Global Markets - An interview with Yan Wang, General Manager of Shanghai Fast-Fix Rivet Corp.
I
n high - end e quipment manuf ac tur ing , a seemingly small rivet often determines the connection reliability of a UAV, a high-speed train or a photovoltaic system. Since its establishment in 1997, Shanghai Fast-Fix Rivet Corp. has remained deeply focused on the riveting sector, evolving from a standard rivet manufacturer into a total riveting solutions provider. As global demand grows for lightweight, high-reliability and corrosionresistant fasteners, how is Fast-Fix strengthening its competitive edge? In this issue, CFM speaks with Yan Wang, General Manager of Shanghai Fast-Fix Rivet Corp. Wang told CFM that in it s early years the company focused on rivet R&D and manufacturing, continuously refining its full-process capabilities in materials, forming and surface treatment. After years of iteration, it has gradually transformed from a standard rivet producer into a professional ser vice provider integrating R&D, customized production and complete riveting solutions. "Our core business positioning is very clear: we focus on all types of rivet fasteners, balancing highvolume delivery of standard parts with custom development of non-standard products, and serving industrial customers both at home and abroad," he said.

High-Strength Structural Rivets
According to Wang, Fast-Fix's product portfolio covers open-end blind rivets, closed-end blind rivets and structural rivets, in materials including carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, A280 and Monel, covering most industrial riveting scenarios such as aerospace and defense, rocket launch, high-speed rail, automotive, photovoltaic and renewable energy. Among them, high-strength structural rivets are the company's core strength, mainly targeting aerospace, highspeed rail, automotive and other high-end equipment applications that demand ex tremely high connec tion reliabilit y. Such product s face stringent requirement s for tensile and shear s t reng t h and v ibr at ion f at ig ue resistance. Wang said Fast-Fix has achieved industry-leading performance in key indicators. From wire selection, cold heading and heat treatment to mandrel break point control and surface treatment, the entire production process system is mature and stable, enabling excellent product consistency under high-volume production. "We can not only consistently deliver high-standard mechanical performance, but also effectively avoid risks
such as rivet shank fracture, joint s lip p a g e a n d f a t ig u e f a ilur e in riveted assemblies, fully meeting the stringent reliability and durability tes ting requirement s of the rail transit and automotive industries," he said.
Non-Standard UAV Case
Wang shared with CFM a custom development case for a European industrial UAV manufacturer. The customer needed a completely new rivet developed from scratch. It had to achieve extreme lightweighting to reduce overall aircraft weight, while offering excellent mechanical load-bearing capacity and vibration fatigue resistance. Outdoor operation required high corrosion resistance, and the head had to adopt a flush, streamlined structure to reduce aerodynamic drag. Af ter receiving the requirement, Fast-Fix provided full-process ser vices from preliminar y FTO (freedom-tooperate) patent risk screening, special material selection and streamlined structural design, to tooling development, multiple rounds of sample iteration, full mechanical, salt spray and wind-induced vibration simulation testing , and finally volume production. "During development, we had to repeatedly balance multiple competing technical requirements—lightweighting, strength, corrosion protection and low wind resistance. The custom rivet ultimately passed the customer's complete laborator y validation and was successfully applied. This project fully demonstrates our full non-standard solution capabilities for overseas high-end equipment customers," Wang said.
Four High-Value Segments
In recent years, Fast-Fix has focused its R&D investment on four high-value segments: aerospace, rail transit (highspeed rail), automotive, and photovoltaic and renewable energy. Wang said that in aerospace and UAV applications, the company is concentrating on lightweight specialt y riveting materials, solving the conflict s among weight reduction, high strength, corrosion resistance and low-
drag streamlined structures. For the high-speed rail and automotive industries, it is focusing on high-performance structural rivets, continuously optimizing cold heading and heat treatment processes, strictly controlling mechanical property dispersion, and improving vibration and fatigue resistance.
Global Footprint
Fast-Fix products are aimed at the global market. Europe and the United States are its core overseas markets, while its business also covers South America, the Middle East, Asia and Africa, among others. Wang acknowledged that different regions differ significantly in quality thresholds, applicable standards and certification requirements. European and Amer ican cus tomer s value me chanical per for mance, batch-to-batch consistency, surface corrosion protection, test reports and intellectual property compliance. South American and Middle Eastern customers are more concerned with cost and delivery lead times. Some Asian and African customers focus on compatibilit y with local assembly practices and industry standards. To this end, Fast-Fix has established a flexible adaptation system. For European and American customers, it strictly benchmark s it s produc t s against local standards and provides complete material certifications, salt spray test reports and mechanical test reports, as well as FTO patent risk screening. For South America and the Middle East, it optimizes the supply chain while ensuring baseline quality. For Asian and African markets, it flexibly switches between metric and inch specifications to suit customers' existing assembly conditions.

Influence of Processing Quality on Fracture Behaviour of High‑Strength Bolts - How New National Standards Are Driving the Development of the Fastener Industry Technical Expert: Zhang Xianming
Metallographic Structure Examination
Specimens were cut from the shank of fractured bolts and from locations near the threaded fracture surface, then observed and analyzed under a DM3000 optical microscope. Non-metallic inclusions in the bolt steel were rated in accordance with the standard rating charts specified in GB/T 10561-2023 "Determination of Non‑Metallic Inclusion Content in Steel". After etching with a 4% nitric acid (HNO3) solution in alcohol, the metallographic structure of the fractured bolts was observed and analyzed via optical microscope and highresolution scanning electron microscope (HR-SEM). Tempered sorbite was rated using the fourth group of rating charts from GB/T 13320-2025 "Metallographic Rating Charts and Evaluation Method for Steel Die Forgings".

The presence of this bright white ferrite and residual banded structure characteristics in the bolt's metallographic structure [4-5] reflects incomplete austenitization during quenching heating [6]. (3) The metallographic structures at the surface and core of the bolt 2 shank are shown in Figure 6, both consisting of tempered sorbite and rated at grade 4.5. A small amount of ferrite was observed in the shank structure, with a notably higher content at the core, and faint banded structure characteristics remained visible on the bolt shank.

secondary cracks or tearing voids (Figures 8–9). Zone B, the fibrous zone of the fracture surface, occupied approximately one‑third of the total fracture area. It was relatively flat near the central fracture, with torsional tearing striations visible macroscopically at the peripher y. Under SEM, this zone exhibited quasi‑cleavage and extensive plastic tearing (Figures 10–11), or successive plastic tearing features. Its microscopic characteristics consisted of abundant quasi‑cleavage plus tearing dimples (Figures 12–13) and a large number of tearing dimples (Figure 14). Zone C, located at the peripheral edge of the fracture surface, exhibited fine shear‑type dimples in its microscopic morphology (Figure 15). This edge region corresponds to the shear lip formed during final fracture. All bolt fractures originated from the center of the fracture surface. The fracture surfaces were either rough and uneven or presented flat zones characteristic of brittle fracture. Microscopically, the fractures were dominated by brittle cleavage and quasi‑cleavage fracture, accompanied by plastic tearing dimple features, numerous secondary cracks and tearing voids, with abnormal morphology of faint coarse grain traces visible locally. These abnormal fracture characteristics are highly similar to the microscopic fracture features of brittle fracture in hot‑rolled steel [7], indicating that although the bolt core has undergone quenching and tempering treatment, its microstructure has not been fully refined and improved, with residual hot‑rolled structural traces and obvious ferrite banded structure.

Microscopic characteristics were observed and analyzed for the fracture initiation zone (Zone A), fibrous zone (Zone B) and shear lip zone (Zone C) of each fracture surface. Zone A, the central fracture initiation zone, had a rough and uneven macroscopic fracture surface with a relatively large area of approximately Φ8–10 mm. The microscopic fracture morphology of Zone A was dominated by flat cleavage facets, with localized plastic tearing dimple features and deep

CFM - Issue 47 -Sep. 2026
The fractured high‑strength bolt steel is of average metallurgical quality, with no abnormal inclusion defects obser ved. The quenched and tempered metallographic structure of the bolts consists of tempered sorbite, but with poor structural uniformity and high ferrite content at the core. This is attributed to incomplete austenitization during heating for quenching: in addition to undissolved ferrite at the bolt core, traces of banded structure from the hot‑rolled raw material are visible in the microstructure. In pursuit of cost reduction and efficiency improvement, enterprises may
shorten the holding time of quenching heating to save energy and costs, resulting in incomplete austenitization and uneven quenched structure. Such uneven undissolved ferrite structure cannot be eliminated during subsequent tempering, posing a risk of premature failure. The metallographic structure af ter quenching and tempering is evaluated in accordance with GB/T 13320-2025 "Metallographic Rating Charts and Evaluation Method for Steel Die Forgings". For property class 10.9 high‑strength bolts, the tempered sorbite rating is generally required to be no higher than grade 4. Although the tensile strength and hardness of this batch of bolts meet the performance requirements for property class 10.9 bolts, the structural uniformity is poor (tempered sorbite + bainite + strip and block ferrite + a small amount of pearlite), resulting in a grade 4.5 rating, which fails to meet the specification. In zones with high ferrite content in the bolts, the fracture surface exhibits quasi‑cleavage characteristics. Fracture analysis shows a good correspondence between fracture morphology and microstructure analysis at the bolt core due to high ferrite content: the tempered sorbite zone presents dimple morphology, while localized ferrite zones present quasi‑cleavage characteristics [8]. The high ferrite content at the core of fractured bolts and residual traces of hot‑rolled banded structure in the microstructure both indicate insufficient holding time during quenching heating, which severely impairs the strength‑toughness balance and service safety of the bolts.
Thread Machining
Crack defects were observed on the threads near the fracture in all thread specimens, mainly caused by improper thread rolling process, which leads to folding af ter the convergence of metal plastic flow during rolling forming. Microcracks of varying depths were also present at all thread roots, propagating obliquely with relatively wide openings and rounded tips, indicating that cracks had formed at multiple thread roots of the bolts. After etching, the metallographic structure at the thread crests and roots was fine with obvious flow traces (Figure 16). As specified in GB/T 5770.3-2000 "Surface Defects of Fasteners – Particular Requirements for Bolts, Screws and Studs", for load‑bearing bolt threads, folding with a depth no greater than 1/4 of the thread profile height above the pitch diameter is permissible, while folding at the thread root is a non‑permissible defect. This batch of bolts had extensive folding defects at both thread roots and crests, which do not comply with standard requirements. Thread folding is also one of the primary causes identified in the bolt fracture analysis.

Crack Initiation and Stress Source
After necking occurs under tensile stress, the necked region is subjected to triaxial tensile stress, and the maximum tensile stress shifts toward the core. The ferrite at the bolt core acts as a weak link, undergoing deformation and tearing first via quasi‑cleavage fracture. In zones with high ferrite content at the bolt core, numerous secondary cracks appear on the fracture surface, and multiple brittle quasi‑cleavage fracture micro‑zones are visible at high magnification. The quasi‑cleavage fracture mode of ferrite impairs the strength‑toughness balance of high‑strength bolts and serves as a crack initiation source [9]. For regions beyond the 10 mm central zone, the fracture surfaces are essentially composed of dimples, with shear dimples in the shear lip zone. The tempered sorbite matrix in the metallographic structure of high‑strength bolts ensures that the fracture surface is predominantly dimple‑type overall. The presence of numerous secondary cracks and abundant brittle quasi‑cleavage micro‑zones at the bolt core is a rare abnormal morphology in high‑strength bolt fractures.
External Factors of Fracture
Given that the hardness and tensile strength of the fractured bolts meet the technical requirements for property class 10.9 bolts, fracture during installation at the specified torque of 2810 N·m is abnormal. Based on the presence

TECHNOLOGY of necking near the fracture surface, the fracture can be determined as ductile fracture caused by tensile overload. The possibility of overload due to over‑tightening cannot be ruled out, which also constitutes an external factor leading to bolt fracture.
Conclusions
(1) The abundant quasi‑cleavage micro‑zones at the central fracture surface of the bolts constitute the fracture initiation zone, which is associated with high ferrite content and hot‑rolled banded structure in the core microstructure of quenched and tempered bolts. The primary cause of bolt fracture is incomplete through-hardening at the core. The poor uniformity of the bolt microstructure indicates that during quenching heating in the mesh belt furnace, excessive furnace loading and fast mesh belt speed resulted in insufficient heating, leading to incomplete and uneven austenitization at the core and incomplete through‑hardening of the bolts. To ensure sufficient austenitization during quenching, to obtain an
approximately 90% martensitic structure that is uniform and free from microstructural defects, great importance shall be attached to metallographic examination of the as‑quenched structure to verify the rationality and effectiveness of the heat treatment process. (2) Medium‑carbon CrMo steel and CrMoV steel are generally selected for property class 10.9 products. The quality of high‑strength fasteners depends on the heat treatment method and processing technology to ensure resistance to delayed fracture and the required product performance, with yield ratio and microstructure as mandatory inspection items. When the hardness and tensile strength of high‑strength bolts meet property class 10.9 requirements but microstructure inhomogeneity is neglected, there is a risk of bolt overload fracture due to over‑tightening during installation. Improper thread rolling process and extensive folding defects at both thread roots and crests are among the secondary causes of fracture for this batch of bolts. First‑article inspection and in‑process inspection during thread machining must be strengthened.

INSIGHTS China's Fastener Export Data for Jan.–Jul. 2026:
Emerging Markets Soar as Traditional Destinations Diverge
A
ccording to the latest customs data released for the January–July 2026 period, China's fastener export sector has demonstrated robust resilience and a clear trajectory of high-quality development. Total export value reached USD 7.32 billion, marking a solid 5.4% year-on-year (YoY) increase (USD 6.95 billion in Jan-Jul 2025). The 7-month period witnessed a positive "volume-price joint growth" pattern. Export volume expanded by 2.5% YoY to 3.69 million tonnes, while the average export price rose by 2.8% YoY to USD 1.98/kg. Notably, the growth rate of export value (5.4%) is nearly double that of the volume (2.5%). The faster growth in export value than in volume suggests an improvement in the average export value per unit.

Among these, steel fasteners classified under HS code 7318 accounted for the largest share, with an export value reaching approximately USD 6.18 billion. An in-depth analysis of China's fastener export destinations for January–July 2026 reveals a shifting landscape where emerging markets are acting as the primary growth engine, while demand in certain traditional markets is stagnating. The US retained it s position as the larges t single destination with exports of USD 786.0 million, up a modest 3.2% YoY. However, the most dynamic growth came from Southeast Asia. Vietnam surged to second place with USD 446.6 million (+18.1% YoY), followed by Thailand which posted the strongest growth among the top five at 23.0% (USD 244.8 million). India (+20.9%) and Malaysia (+19.6%) also showed significant momentum. Conversely, exports to Russia (-6.9%), Germany (-5.9%) and the UAE (-30.0%) declined. The most notable outlier is Kyrgyzstan, which, despite a lower export base (USD 105.9 million), demonstrated explosive growth of 43.1%, highlighting the deepening penetration into Central Asian and "Belt and Road" markets. This divergence underscores a strategic

rebalancing, where low-competition, high-growth emerging corridors are becoming pivotal for China's fastener exports amidst a complex global trade environment. Taken as a whole, the January-July 2026 export data paints a picture of a Chinese fastener industry successfully navigating complex global headwinds through structural optimization and strategic market rebalancing. While total export value grew by a solid 5.4% to USD 7.32 billion, the parallel growth in both volume (2.5%) and average prices (2.8%) underscores the sector's steadfast transition from quantity-driven expansion to value-driven quality enhancement. Simultaneously, the significant double-digit surges in emerging markets such as Vietnam, Thailand, India, and Kyrgyzstan, juxtaposed against the contractions in Russia, Germany, and the UAE, highlight a pivotal shift in the global demand map. With traditional Western markets offering increasingly saturated or volatile demand, the deepening penetration into Southeast Asian and Belt and Road corridors is becoming the primary growth engine for Chinese fastener exporters.

Analysis of U.S. Fastener Import Sources in the First Half of 2026
I
ntroduction
According to the latest monthly data, the total volume of U.S. fastener imports in the first half of 2026 registered a 9.3% year-on-year drop, with total import value falling by 11.7%, signaling a pronounced contraction trend. By integrating monthly aggregate data for H1 2026 with an analysis of rankings by major source regions, CFM unveils the evolving dynamics among the top 10 source regions.
Overall Monthly and Total Trends
Based on data extracted and collated from the United Nations Commodity Trade Statistics Database (UN Comtrade), U.S. fastener imports in H1 2026 totaled 783.1 million kg, down from 863.6 million kg in H1 2025, a 9.3% year-over-year drop. In value terms, the total shrank from USD 3.406 billion to USD 3.006 billion, an 11.7% decline—indicating that average unit values also fell slightly.
86
Month-by-month comparisons paint a consistent picture of contraction:
The most striking feature is June 2026: volume edged up by 0.7% year-over-year, while value was nearly flat (-1.1%). This suggests a possible stabilization at the end of the half-year, though it remains too early to call a turning point. The steepest year-over-year declines came early in the period, with January and February value down 18.1% and 18.6% respectively, before the pace eased through the spring. This overall contraction sets the stage for the regional shifts detailed below—where we see that not all sources suffered equally.

statistics) maintained its position as the top source region for U.S. fastener imports in H1 2026, with a total value of USD 938.3 million. However, this figure represents a 15.0% year-over-year decline from USD 1.10 billion in H1 2025. China, the second-largest source by value, saw an even sharper contraction. Imports from China fell to USD 490.4 million in H1 2026, down 20.8% from USD 619.2 million in the prior-year period. This double-digit decline aligns with ongoing tariff escalations: U.S. Section 232 duties on steel and steel derivatives, combined with successive Section 301 tariff actions on Chinese goods, have continued to raise the effective cost of Chinese fasteners, potentially encouraging importers to diversify their sourcing. Japan, ranking third, recorded USD 285.2 million in H1 2026, a 9.3% decrease from USD 314.4 million in H1 2025. The Republic of Korea also recorded a double-digit decline of 12.3%, falling to USD 136.6 million from USD 155.8 million. Canada experienced a notable 14.9% decline, sliding to USD 155.3 million.

Conclusion
The first half of 2026 marks a pivotal moment for U.S. fastener imports. Overall demand has shrunk by nearly 10% in volume and over 11% in value, with monthly data showing a clear downward trend that only began to flatten in June. Yet within this contracting market, a significant reallocation is visible: as some sources decline, others rise. China and "Other Asia" continue to dominate in absolute terms, but their share is eroding under tariff pressures and supply chain diversification. Europe is gaining ground, both in value and volume, while Southeast Asian suppliers like Vietnam and Thailand are emerging as quiet winners. For procurement professionals and industry stakeholders, the message is unambiguous: the sourcing landscape is in flux.

INSIGHTS
Haiyan: China's Premier Fastener Hub, From "Industrial Rice" to High-End Precision Manufacturing
L
ocated on the northern shore of Hangzhou
Bay in Zhejiang Province and in the core
hinterland of the Yangtze River Delta, Haiyan
County is a major manufacturing hub and one of China's three largest fastener production bases. Its fastener industry dates back to the early 1970s.
Today, Haiyan not only provides a reliable supply base for global buyers, but has also become a
vivid example of China's fastener sector moving up
from being the "industrial rice" of manufacturing to high-end production.
A Full-Fledged Industrial Ecosystem: The Cluster Power of 401 Enterprises
According to data from the Zhejiang Fasteners Industry Association, by the end of 2025, Haiyan County was home to 401 companies across the fastener supply chain. Of these, 171 were above-scale high-end fastener manufacturers, accounting for 20.68% of all above-scale industrial enterprises in the county. Thirty-nine companies had annual output value exceeding RMB 100 million, representing 16.53% of all county enterprises above that threshold. The total industrial output 92

v a lu e o f hig h end fasteners reached RMB 15.625 billion, accounting for 10% of the county's total above-scale industrial output value. In terms of enterprise strength and innovation, Haiyan has two listed fastener companies, seven national-level "Little Giant" enterprises, three provincial "hidden champion" enterprises, and 47 provincial-level "Specialized, Refined, Distinctive and Innovative (SRDI)" SMEs. The county is also home to five provincial enterprise research institutes and 16 enterprise technology R&D centers at or above the provincial level, providing solid support for technical breakthroughs and product upgrades.
From Niche Player to Industry Standout: An Entrepreneur's Differentiated Growth Path
In Haiyan's fastener industry, individual stories often best illustrate the vitality of the region. CFM previously interviewed Chen Zhen, chairman of Zhejiang Hystron Auto Parts Co.,
Ltd. Originally from Hubei Province, Chen came to Haiyan in 2004 at the invitation of a local fastener company. Drawing on his technical exper tise, he worked as a technician. Watching the busy production site, he began to dream of building his own modern factory. Today, Zhejiang Hystron Auto Parts produces automotive parts, non-standard fasteners, specialshaped parts and other specialty products that have reached overseas markets. Around 90% of its products are exported to Europe, North America and other regions. The company has been recognized as a "Zhejiang Provincial Specialized and Sophisticated Fastener Product Enterprise' and serves as an Executive Council Member of the Zhejiang Fasteners Industry Association.
Craftsmanship Meets Innovation: Unlocking the Full Potential of a Single Screw
I f C h e n Zh e n's s to r y r e f le c t s t h e b o ld , enterprising spirit of Haiyan entrepreneur s, Zhejiang Excellent Industries Co., Ltd. demonstrates another dimension: small products can deliver big achievements. The company used 163,852 screws to create a 7m × 7m artwork titled "Spring Scenery of Wuling", turning fasteners into art. Its output value reached RMB 230 million in 2025. The company was named a national-level "Little Giant"enterprise, and as early as 2016 it took the lead in cross-border e-commerce. Its own brands, including "TK" and "EXCELLENT," sell well in Europe and America. B e yond the companie s ab ove, Haiy an's fastener industry also includes a number of other outstanding players in the high-end and precision segment. Würth Group, a global benchmark in fasteners, has been operating in Haiyan since 2015. It has built a 47,000-square-meter smart logistics hub equipped with German automated warehousing systems, and its supply chain center sales approached RMB 1 billion in 2025. In the capital market, Qifeng Precision Industry Sci‑Tech Corp. listed on the Beijing Stock Exchange in 2022, becoming the first fastener company listed on the exchange. Its fasteners are deployed in critical components including brake discs and gearboxes of China's Fuxing bullet trains. Zhejiang Ronnie Precision Machine Co., Ltd. also went public in the same year. Also a national-level "Little Giant"enterprise, Ronnie's products cover the 3C electronics and automotive sectors. In addition, Yuxing Fasteners (Jiaxing) Co., Ltd. is a leading nut
manufacturer in China, focusing on high-strength nuts for wind power, automotive and railway applications. It has ranked first in domestic market share for consecutive years and has also been recognized as a national-level "Little Giant" enterprise.
From "Made in Haiyan" to "Smart Manufacturing in Haiyan"
For global buyers, Haiyan is a region that deserves close attention. In 2025, China's fastener exports totaled USD 10.036 billion and 4.9997 million tonnes. Haiyan County accounted for 8.37% of the national export value and 14.8% of the national export volume. The top three export markets—the European Union, the United States and Russia— accounted for 23.94%, 22.65% and 7.44% of the county's total fastener exports respectively, together representing 54.03%. By the end of 2025, 17 fastener enterprises in the county had annual exports exceeding USD 10 million, accounting for 17.17% of all county enterprises with exports above USD 10 million.

INSIGHTS New Energy and High‑End Applications:
How Fasteners Are Moving Up the Value Chain
A
s wind turbines, battery packs and high-voltage systems grow in scale and complexity, the value proposition of fasteners is shifting. Buyers are no longer simply sourcing a bolt that meets dimensional and strength requirements — they are investing in a joint solution that delivers greater reliability, verifiability and maintainability.
Why Fastener Value Is Changing
In conventional procurement, fasteners are widely regarded as commodit y component s: buyer s spe cif y dimensions, thread form, material and property class, then select suppliers based on price and lead time. Yet in wind energy, electric mobility and other high-end equipment sectors, fasteners occupy a critical intersection of safety, per for mance and life c ycle maintenance. Though the component itself is small, the costs of joint failure — downtime, repair work and safety risks — can be substantial. This issue has come into sharper focus as these industries scale rapidly. According to the International Energy Agency 94
CFM - Issue 47 -Sep. 2026
(IEA), global electric vehicle sales surpassed 20 million vehicles in 2025, accounting for roughly one-quarter of all new vehicle sales. The Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) reported 165 GW of new wind power capacity installed in 2025. As a growing fleet of mission-critical assets enters long-term service, an increasing number of bolted joints must perform reliably under vibration, thermal cycling, humidity, salt spray and cyclic loading. High strength alone does not provide a complete picture. ISO 898-1 specifies the mechanical properties of carbon and alloy steel fasteners, but it does not address fatigue performance, corrosion resistance or the torque-clamp force relationship. A property class is therefore merely a baseline. True value resides in the performance of the entire joint system: appropriate material selection, consistent preload, controlled coating friction, repeatable assembly processes, comprehensive test and batch traceability records, and inservice inspectability.
Wind Energy Fasteners
A wind turbine is by no means a static structure. Wind speeds fluctuate constantly, the rotor rotates continuously, and the tower and drivetrain are subjected to repeated loading over many years of operation. Bolted joints in tower flanges, support structures and interfaces such as the hub-to-mainshaft connection must therefore withstand not only peak loads, but also fatigue damage accumulated over long-term cyclic loading. One of the most critical concepts in bolted joint design is preload — the initial clamping force applied to a bolt before the equipment enters service. When preload is properly set, mating surfaces are less prone to separation or slip, and translated into additional dynamic stress in the bolt.. If preload drops substantially, micro-movements at the joint become more likely, amplifying bolt stress fluctuations and increasing fatigue risk. Studies on wind turbine tower flanges have confirmed that significant preload loss accelerates bolt fatigue damage. The value of a wind energy fastener therefore extends far beyond large diameter and high tensile streng th. It encompasses controlled friction characteristics, specified lubrication and coating systems, validated tightening procedures, flange contact quality and dimensional control, as well as traceable installation and inspection records. Depending on joint configuration and loading mode, torque tightening, hydraulic tensioning or angle-controlled tightening may be required. A single tool set and parameter set cannot be assumed suitable for all joint locations. O f f shore wind applic at ions int ro duce addit ional challenges: salt spray, high humidity, limited access and elevated service costs. Corrosion protection and in-service condition monitoring become even more critical. A seemingly low-cost fastener can result in a higher total cost of ownership (TCO) if it requires frequent retightening, lacks traceability or suffers premature failure.
Smart Fastening Solutions
Smart fasteners are often oversimplified as bolts with embedded chips, but the technology landscape is far more diverse. The first core function is digital identification: RFID or NFC tags can store part numbers, installation locations, installation dates and maintenance records. This addresses basic traceability: identifying the fastener, its origin and its installed position. The second function is condition sensing. Strain gauges, thin-film sensors, piezoelectric elements, fiber Bragg gratings and smart washers can all be used to monitor preload, applied load, temperature or loosening. The third layer is connectivity and data analytics: measurement data is transmitted via wired, wireless or RFID systems to build a historical record of joint condition. Identification, sensing
and connectivity can be integrated into a single solution, or deployed separately. Not every smart fastening application requires the same sensor or chip technology. Fraunhofer's Q‑Bo® smar t joint system ser ves as a practical example. It uses a thin‑film sensor to measure clamp force and temperature, transmits data via low‑power wireless communication, and can harvest energy from temperature differentials. For wind‑turbine‑specific validation, Fraunhofer IWES has also tested strain‑gauged bolts on a scaled wind turbine drivetrain test rig to obser ve load and preload variations in a hub‑to‑main‑shaft flange interface. These technologies point to a potential shif t from scheduled manual inspection to condition-based maintenance, but they are not yet widely adopted in the industry. Sensors add cost and present challenges related to power supply, calibration, temperature compensation and long-term durability. If sensor integration requires modifications to bolt geometry, the resulting load capacity and fatigue performance must be fully revalidated. Smart fastening delivers real value only when the data is reliable and embedded into established maintenance workflows.
Electric Vehicle Fastening
New energy vehicles not only change the source of power, but also alter the application positions of fasteners. Batteryto-body mounting points, battery trays and covers, module assembly, high-voltage busbars, e-motors, power electronics, thermal management lines and high-voltage harness routing all demand specialized joint solutions.
CFM - Issue 47 - Sep. 2026
95
INSIGHTS The first consideration is structural safety. Battery packs are heavy and typically mounted low in the vehicle chassis. Their fastening points must withstand everyday vibration and shock loads, as well as crash impacts. U.S. FMVSS 305 includes requirements concerning the retention of rechargeable energy storage systems during and after crash testing, including restrictions on intrusion into the occupant compartment. This is not a specification for any single bolt, but it underscores that battery retention is a vehicle-level safety-critical issue. The second area is high-voltage electrical joints. Busbars transmit high currents throughout the battery and power distribution system. If a bolted busbar joint loses clamp force, contact quality can degrade, leading to increased electrical resistance and elevated temperatures. A high-voltage busbar joint must therefore be evaluated not just on torque or mechanical strength, but on clamp force, contact resistance, thermal behavior and long-term stability. A 2025 SAE research has addressed this topic through combined mechanical, electrical and thermal analysis. The third dimension is material compatibilit y and manufacturing integration. Battery systems incorporate a mix of materials: aluminum, steel, copper, plastics and composites. Mismatches in hardness, thermal expansion coefficients and electrochemical properties can cause embedding in softer materials, preload relaxation or galvanic corrosion. Battery enclosures may also require joints to provide sealing performance. Meanwhile, automotive production demands high-speed, automated and verifiable assembly processes, while serviceability and recyclability benefit from removable joint designs. This is why bolted joints will not simply be fully replaced by welding across all applications. Welding delivers high production efficiency and low electrical resistance, but mechanical fastening adds unique value in disassembly, rework, diagnostics and modular system design. The optimal joining method depends on the application location, base materials, current carr ying requirements, sealing needs, production cycle time and service requirements.
The Common Foundations of HighValue Fastening
Across wind energy, electric mobility and other high-end sectors, there is seldom a single "universal bolt" that solves every joint challenge. High value is delivered through a defined set of controllable, verifiable capabilities. First, application-aligned material selection. Strength, toughness and operating temperature range must be matched to actual load profiles and service environments. Second, surface and friction control. Coatings impact not only corrosion resistance, but also tightening friction coefficient and resultant
96
CFM - Issue 47 -Sep. 2026
clamp force. For high-strength steels, tighter process control is also required to mitigate hydrogen embrittlement risks introduced during manufacturing and surface finishing. Third, joint design and assembly process control. Torque is merely an input parameter at the tool; the target outcome is consistent, accurate clamp force. Tightening method, lubrication condition, mating surface quality and component tolerances all influence the result. Fourth, comprehensive testing. Tests of mechanical property, torque-clamp force, fatigue and corrosioneach address different performance aspects. No single test can validate the full service life of a joint in realworld operating conditions. Fifth, documentation and batch traceability. Records of material heat number, heat treatment, coating process, test results and production lot allow buyers to verify product origin and streamline root cause analysis in the event of a quality issue. Sixth, in-service maintenance support. For applications with difficult access or high downtime costs, preload inspection, condition trend monitoring and datadriven maintenance create new service-based value. This means fastener suppliers need to engage with customers on joint design much earlier in the development cycle, rather than waiting for finalized drawings to quote a unit price. Defining loads, materials, service environment, assembly methods and validation requirements upfront significantly reduces the need for costly rework later.
Extending the Same Logic to Other High-End Applications
The same value proposition applies across energy storage, hydrogen equipment, rail transit and aerospace. These sectors do not rely on a single standardized bolt. What unites them
What base materials are being joined — for example, aluminum, copper, plastics or composites? Will the joint be exposed to salt spray, humidity, temperature extremes, chemical media or hydrogen environments?
Which tightening method will be employed, and how will clamp force or installation quality be verified?
What test reports, material certificates, coating process records and batch traceability documentation are required? Does the joint require sealing, electrical conductivity, insulation, removability or condition monitoring capabilities?
is the high cost of joint failure, harsh operating environments and expensive maintenance — all factors that elevate the impor tance of process control and documented quality evidence. Aerospace of fer s a def initive example of rigorous traceability. NASA's standards for mission hardware fasteners cover procurement , incoming inspec tion, testing , lot traceability and storage conditions. While these requirements c annot b e dire c t ly t r ans fe r re d to ge ne r al indus t r ial procurement, they demonstrate that in high-consequence applications, material and batch documentation are intrinsic to product value. Hydrogen-related equipment also brings material embrittlement into sharp focus. Hydrogen can be introduced during manufacturing, surface finishing or service operation, and high-strength steels typically require much tighter process control. It would be inaccurate to claim that a standard highstrength bolt is inherently suitable for high-pressure hydrogen service. Suitability must be assessed against the specific medium, pressure level, base material and applicable industry standards.
These questions reframe the procurement task from sourcing a commodity bolt to delivering a joint solution. A fastener does not inherently deliver higher value simply because it is larger, stronger or fitted with a sensor chip. Its true value lies in reducing uncertainty around joint performance, enhancing safet y of critical equipment, and improving verifiability and maintainability over the asset lifecycle.
Key Questions for Procuring HighValue Fastening Solutions
For safety-critical or performance-critical applications, specifying only thread size, property class and quantity is insufficient. An effective technical RFQ should address at minimum the following questions: What loads act on the joint, and is there vibration or long-term cyclic loading?

INSIGHTS Tariff Differentials Reshape Global Fastener Sourcing:
Chinese Products Face Duties Ranging From 0% to 83.6%
G
lobal demand for fasteners has not seen a material contraction in 2026. Instead, the structural shift lies in the tariff cost composition underlying every purchase order. The same shipment of Chinese-made fasteners qualifies for duty-free entry into Australia when it meets the China-Australia Free Trade Agreement (ChAFTA) rules of origin and is accompanied by the required documentation. They typically attract a 5% standard customs duty in the UAE. Yet when shipped to the United States, they face combined duties of 75% to 83.6%. In Canada, cer tain carbon steel screws may face a 25% derivative-product sur tax, a 170% antidumping duty and an additional countervailing duty charged by weight.
W h il e d e m a n d f r o m g l o b a l buyers remains inelastic, their sourcing decisions have shifted from straightforward price comparison to full-chain landed cost analysis. 98
CFM - Issue 47 -Sep. 2026
North America:
Base Tariffs No Longer Drive Core Costs United States: Combined Duties Top 80% for Standard Steel Fasteners
As of August 2026, the key tariff risk in the U.S. market comes not from any single trade measure, but from the cumulative impact of stacked duties across multiple trade regimes. Take HTS 7318.15.80 — which covers other iron and steel screws and bolts with shanks or threads of 6 mm or more in diameter — as a reference example. The standard statutory duty for this heading is 8.5%. Goods of Chinese origin under this classification are also subject to a 25% Section 301 tariff. Effective April 6, 2026, this HTS code was added to Annex I-A of the revised Section 232 metals program. The Section 232 levy is now assessed on the full customs value of the finished imported article, rather than solely on the value of its steel content.
This brings the total duty calculation to: 8.5% base duty + 25% Section 301 duty + 50% Section 232 duty = 83.5% combined rate For self-tapping screws under HTS 7318.14.10, the combined rate is roughly 81.2%, while HTS 7318.14.50 hits 83.6%. Even bolts and nuts with a zero base duty still face a combined 75% levy from Section 301 and Section 232 measures. In July 2026, the U.S. introduced an additional 12.5% Section 301 duty linked to forced-labor import prohibitions. However, products already subject to Section 232 metals tariffs are exempt from this new measure. This 12.5% rate should not be stacked mechanically on top of the combined rates set out above. For U.S. buyers, quotes based solely on FOB terms no longer hold meaningful reference value. The competitiveness of duty-paid landed cost has become the core decision-making metric.
the export price and impose corresponding anti-dumping duties. A countervailing duty of RMB 1.25 per kilogram may also apply. This means total duty exposure for affected products can reach: 25% steel derivative surtax + 170% anti-dumping duty + weight-based countervailing duty Total rates can surpass 195% in extreme scenarios. Canada market access cannot be judged solely by its zero headline MFN tariff.
EU and Mexico:
Trade Remedy Scope Determines Actual Market Access
Canada: The 25% Surtax Is Just the First Layer of Duty Exposure
Under Canada's 2026 tariff schedule, fasteners classified under headings 7318.14, 7318.15 and 7318.16 carry a 0% MostFavored-Nation (MFN) duty rate. However, since December 26, 2025, Canada has imposed a 25% ad valorem surtax on the full value of specified steel derivative products from all origins. The list explicitly includes screws, bolts, nuts, washers, rivets and other fasteners under HS heading 7318. A more significant cost risk comes from trade remedy measures under Canada's Special Import Measures Act (SIMA). For certain carbon steel screws from China subject to antidumping proceedings, if an exporter cannot provide valid normal value documentation, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) may set the normal value at a 170% uplift from
The EU's standard customs duty for most fasteners under HS heading 7318 is around 3.7%, a relatively low nominal rate. However, certain non-stainless steel fasteners from China are subject to anti-dumping duties ranging from 22.1% to 86.5%, depending on the manufacturer. Combined with the 3.7% base duty, the total customs burden ranges from roughly 25.8% to 90.2%. In addition, the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) entered its definitive phase on Januar y 1, 2026. Importers above the exemption threshold must purchase and surrender CBAM certificates matching the embedded carbon emissions of covered goods. CBAM is not a fixed-percentage tariff. Its cost depends on the product's verified embedded emissions, EU Allowance (EUA) market prices, applicable benchmarks, and any carbon price already paid in the country of origin. It is therefore misleading to present CBAM as a flat 5% or 10% tariff surcharge. For exporters, quotes for the EU market need to answer three core questions: Is the product subject to an anti-dumping order? What producer-specific duty rate applies? Can the manufacturer provide verifiable emissions data? CFM - Issue 47 - Sep. 2026

INSIGHTS origin goods under ChAFTA, provided the required origin documentation is presented. The disparity between duty rates of 0%, 5%, 35% and 83.6% is now wide enough to prompt global buyers to restructure their sourcing strategies
Demand Remains Steady
—But Buyer Sourcing Practices Have Evolved
Mexico's tariff structure is simpler. Under its official tariff decree of April 23, 2026, a 35% import duty applies to products including other screws and bolts under 7318.15.99, nuts under 7318.16.06, and various washers, rivets and pins. Since China and Mexico do not have a free trade agreement covering these products, the 35% rate represents the baseline duty for most Chinese exporters.
Emerging Markets:
Not All Duty-Free, But Rate Gaps Are Wide Enough to Shift Sourcing Patterns
India imposes a 15% basic customs duty on other screws and bolts under 7318.15.00 and nuts under 7318.16.00. On top of this, a Social Welfare Surcharge — generally 10% of the basic customs duty — and 18% Integrated Goods and Services Tax (IGST) are levied, calculated on the sum of the CIF value, basic duty and surcharge. For a shipment with a CIF value of 100, the total border levy comes to roughly 37.47 of the CIF value. Notably, IGST is generally creditable for eligible registered Indian importers. The 37.47% figure therefore reflects border cash outflow rather than a fully irrecoverable final cost. By contrast, Vietnam offers significantly more preferential tariff access. Under the ASEAN-China Free Trade Area (ACFTA) framework, eligible Chinese fasteners accompanied by a valid Form E certificate of origin enjoy a 0% duty rate under headings 7318.14.10 and 7318.14.90. The ACFTA rate is 5% for 7318.15.10 and 0% for 7318.15.90. Nuts under 7318.16.10 and 7318.16.90 also enter duty-free. The UAE generally levies a 5% customs duty calculated on CIF value. Australia grants duty-free access to eligible Chinese-

In the past, fastener exporters could win orders simply by demonstrating their manufacturing capabilities. Today, buyers increasingly expect suppliers to provide a full set of information alongside quotes: estimated tariff classification in the destination country, eligibility requirements for preferential origin treatment, a preliminary check of trade remedy scope, material and property class certifications, carbon emissions and environmental compliance data, and a destination-specific landed cost estimate. For Chine se f as tener manuf ac turer s , new mar ket opportunities are not limited to targeting countries with lower tariffs. More importantly, they need to ensure that when buyers search for specific products, they can easily find information on the company's specification capabilities, certification credentials, packaging solutions, lead times and dut y implications in target markets. Entr y barriers continue to rise in traditional mature markets, while demand in emerging markets keeps growing steadily. Orders will not automatically flow to the markets with the lowest tariffs. They will shift toward suppliers that are easy to find, have verifiable credentials, and can help buyers calculate the true total landed cost.

dies to property class 8.8/10.9/12.9 high-strength automotive fasteners, construction expansion anchors and micro screws for electronics, as well as AI vision inspection systems and eco-friendly surface treatment technologies, showcasing the complete ecosystem of fastener manufacturing and end-use applications. High-strength automotive fasteners led all categories in inquiry volume by a substantial margin. Both new energy and traditional internal combustion engine automakers demonstrated strong purchasing interest in property class 8.8 to 12.9 bolts and chassis-specific fasteners. Driven by largescale infrastructure and real estate construction, orders for construction anchoring and expansion fasteners saw sharp growth. Demand for precision micro screws for electronics, buoyed by mobile phone and home appliance manufacturing, continued on an upward trajectory. Meanwhile, the ongoing capacity expansionamong local Indian manufacturers directly drove inquiries for cold heading equipment and cemented carbide dies, while fastener testing instruments also gained traction as factories stepped up quality control. The event drew buyers from industrial clusters across India, as well as from markets in South Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Southeast Asia, including Bangladesh, the UAE, South Africa and Malaysia.

Cemented carbide dies with a 30% longer service life and micron-level precision areimproving the feasibility of massproducing fasteners with complex head geometries and micro threads. AI-powered in-line inspection systems, which perform fully automated sorting based on surface defects and dimensional specifications, effectively replace manual quality inspection and ease labor pressure on production floors. Additionally, lightweight boron steel fasteners, titanium alloy connectors and eco-friendly processes like chromiumfree Dacromet are positioned to address demand from India's new energy vehicle sector and align with the country's updated environmental regulations. As a key bridge connecting China's fastener industr y with global markets, CFM will continue to closely monitor developments in the Indian market and provide Chinese enterprises expanding internationally with up-to-date industry intelligence and business matching services.
According to data compiled by CFM, India impor ted approximately 107,800 metric tons of fasteners in the first six months of 2026, with a total value of USD 597 million and an average unit price of USD 5.54 per kilogram. Monthly import volumes fluctuated significantly. Volume trended downward from January to April, hit a trough in April, then recovered month on month. June imports reached 23,200 metric tons, the highest monthly total in H1 2026, while the unit price dropped sharply to USD 4.17 per kilogram - the lowest level in H1 2026 - creating a clear divergence between import volume and price. On the export front, India's fastener exports maintained steady overall performance. Total exports stood at around 158,300 metric tons, valued at USD 429 million, with an average unit price of USD 2.71 per kilogram. Both monthly export volume and unit price fluctuated within a tight range. Multiple new technologies made their debut at the exhibition. Chinese equipment suppliers launched integrated cold heading production lines that combine feeding, forming, thread rolling and heat treatment into a single workflow. Marketed as a low-cost retrofit solution, the lines are tailored for capacity expansion projects of small and medium-sized Indian manufacturers. CFM - Issue 47 - Sep. 2026
