Often, significant progress toward meeting community needs is the result of decades of financial support and volunteer leadership. That is certainly true for the Community Foundation, as $5,600 raised by volunteers in 1956 has grown to more than $100,000,000 in assets at the beginning of 2022. Families and businesses have contributed to this growth and the expanded impact we enjoy today. The expectation to give extends across generations, and new pathways for service are uncovered each year.
2021 was the beginning of a pivot out of desperate circumstances as we advance toward a brighter future. The Community Foundation completed its third $100,000 award to the COVID-19 Relief Fund. We continued to make grants from our discretionary accounts to address the crisis families experience when safe and convenient housing exceeds their modest budgets.
President’s Message

Last year, the Community Foundation and a handful of our Donor Advised Funds made $100,000 impact investments with the Greenville Housing Fund. Investments provide a rate of return, and when repaid, the money can be reinvested in more housing efforts or for any charitable purpose. This new tool for deploying resources has the power to accelerate the renovation and construction of budget-friendly dwellings.
Sincerely, Bob Morris

In this report we feature a local artist, two families that have established Donor Advised Funds with us, and the executive director of a dynamic local nonprofit. All are servant leaders, demonstrating what author Bryan Stevenson describes as being proximate to the work. They are examples of people called to give time and money to change lives. Although their efforts reflect different priorities, they have in common a desire to serve and contribute. Another trait they share is a sense of optimism and hope. The motivations for philanthropy remain constant across generations and cultures, yet the context of time and place gives rise to subtle differences. The whole community benefits as the landscape of charitable giving becomes more inclusive. For example, Roberto Cortez, the artist featured in this report, draws on the influence of the Mission District of San Francisco in his art and the cuisine he and his wife prepare at ASADA. Like many Hispanic families, their lives and work are colorful threads interwoven with the tapestry of a place that was once the textile center of the world. A highlight of 2021 was Greenville’s Wings of the City exhibition by worldrenowned Mexican artist Jorge Marín, sponsored by the Hispanic Alliance. Falls Park, championed by Carolina Foothills Garden Club, with its Liberty Bridge designed by Miguel Rosales is a dramatic testament to how Greenville celebrates its past while embracing new traditions. We are welcoming new residents from around the world who bring their own traditions of service and philanthropy. It is inspiring to see the impact of past civic visionaries and the promise of new pathways unfolding around us.

ROLLING FORWARD Momentum Bike Clubs Executive Director Tavaghn Monts Momentum Bike Clubs 2022 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY • 2021 ANNUAL REPORT4

When asked if he’s always been an avid biker, Tavaghn Monts laughs. “My wife and I used to take leisurely rides on the BeltLine in Atlanta. I was never biking at the level of our Challenge Team rides,” he says. But the Clemson graduate and former football player did have a passion for the outdoors and wide-open spaces that prepared him for his current role as executive director of Momentum Bike Clubs.

~

As their skills develop, they can join the Challenge Team, which offers adventure-based outings on weekends, like a recent three-night trip to the New River Trail in Virginia. “They traveled to the next campsite carrying their own gear. Every day was a new lake or a new view of the mountains,” Monts says. “We recently purchased a 15-passenger bus which allows us to be creative and expose students to more amazing outdoor adventures.”
Monts says the excitement he sees on the faces of children following experiences on and off the bike indicates that the group is getting some things right, building trust and a sense of safety that allows them to engage with emotions they’ve rarely experienced before.
amazing stories, but it’s gratifying to have the numbers to coincide with our stories to show the mission is working,” Monts says.
Monts took the helm—or the handlebars— June 1st, 2022, following the retirement of David Taylor, who launched the program in 2010 with just 10 students in the Sterling community. Today it serves 265 students in 21 Upstate clubs, promoting youth development and leadership skills for under-resourced students, using the platform of cycling to foster and sustain positive mentoring relationships.
“Another reaction we see is a feeling of achievement. We support our students as they find confidence and build resilience to overcome obstacles and fears. We create spaces for all students to be valued and encourage them to bring their whole selves to the experiences we offer,” Monts says. “Lastly, we see the reaction of feeling supported. By demonstrating what it means to care and be cared for, we recognize the community building power of respect and encouragement. We foster a family-like environment that allows for affection, love and connectedness.”
“We really appreciate our teachers,” he says. “For some students who are having problems in class, the relationship that develops on the bike lets them see the teacher as a person, and gives teachers the opportunity to learn from their students. For example, that student may be playing the role of adult in their household, and school is where they come to rest. The students open up and give you more details so you can be there for them and show them they don’t have to be the victim of their circumstances. It’s a very fruitful opportunity for long-term relationships from middle school through high school and college.”
In 2021, the Community Foundation of Greenville provided an unrestricted grant of $12,500 to Momentum Bike Clubs as part of its commitment to support minority-led nonprofits. To learn more, visit momentumbikeclubs.org

“It’s all about youth development and mentoring relationships to support and empower them to become leaders in their communities.” Tavaghn Monts

Excursions closer to home include overnight stays in Conestee Nature Preserve and the Preserve at River West. Monthly Circles allow Challenge Team members to share a meal and have honest conversation.“Wedoourbest to meet every student where they are, whether they are just learning to ride a bike or can ride a hundred miles,” Monts says. Momentum is a self-funded, external program of Clemson’s Parks, Recreation & Tourism Management Department. Graduate assistants are partnering with the program to create a comprehensive data capturing system to evaluate its “Nonprofitseffectiveness.have
Momentum Bike Clubs welcome students ages 11-18 regardless of race, background, or gender identity. After school clubs give middle and high school students the opportunity to ride with teachers and other adult mentors, using provided bikes, Monts says.
“It’s all about youth development and mentoring relationships to support and empower them to become leaders in their communities,” Monts says.
Relationships have long been a driving force in William H. “Will” McCauley III’s professional and personal lives. 2022 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY • 2021 ANNUAL REPORT6

Although everything has not been easy—he lost his father 10 years ago to ALS—he still recognizes his good fortune and the need to care for those within the company and the community.

“I think that where I sit in life right now is a gift, and my faith and beliefs lead me to ask how to be a good steward of that gift,” he Relationshipssays. are central to answering that question, beginning with the influence of his wife, Amy.
“It’s not mine; I truly feel that I don’t work with employees, I work with coworkers,” he says. “It started with my father as the sole employee, and 51 years later there are more than 90 key players. It’s 100% about the people.”

Like many couples, Will and Amy want to pass on their philanthropic values to their children, Mac, 19, Mills, 16, and Libby, 10. They want to engage in purposeful, impactful giving that serves the needs of those here at home in the Upstate first. To further those goals, they turned to the Community Foundation of Greenville and set up a Donor Advised Fund (DAF) in 2020 because they felt their values aligned well with its mission. What they didn’t expect was that in doing so, their giving objectives would actually become clearer.
“The Community Foundation helped put us on the same page. Setting up the Donor Advised Fund helps you talk about goals as a family. It creates an environment where you can ask ‘Are we on track?’ It’s encouraging to know that your dollars are compounded here in the community,” says Will.
“They’re the elite of the elite. We have no idea what they’re doing to protect us, our families and our country every day,” Will says. “When they finish their tour, they sometimes struggle as they integrate back into society. It’s so different from what they have been trained for. The suicide rate is very high.” Will actively works with members of the local chapter in organizing their annual fundraiser to provide resources to support SFF’s pillars of health, education, career, and “Nowcommunity.theSouth Carolina event is recognized as one of the most successful in the country,” Will says. “It started with a couple of guys who had a vision. It’s amazing to be a part of it.”
“Amy has the most giving, loving, tender heart,” he says. “She has helped me to grow and be someone who wants to give back openly and happily, not just as a duty. There’s a big difference there—intentional, loving and caring vs. checking a box.”

“We’re looking forward to talking to them about organizations they want to support and letting them be a part of the planning for their fund,” Will says. “As they grow up, we want them to have opportunities to be involved in their community.”
This is the community’s building. Whatever the community this is what we do.

Although the McCauleys donate to many organizations, some are particularly close to their hearts. Will joined the Board of the Cancer Society of Greenville after learning more about the organization’s work from another board member. He also serves on the advisory board of the South Carolina Chapter of SEAL Future Foundation, an organization providing support for Navy SEALs as they transition into civilian life. His involvement with SFF began about five years ago when he met a couple of them and heard their stories.

Will and Amy plan to work with the Community Foundation to set up another DAF in the names of their children, preparing them to make their own giving decisions in the future.

Kelly and Katherine Odom both grew up in families committed to charitable giving, particularly to their churches. In their own family, which includes sons Wade, 13, and Taylor, 9, they’ve continued that tradition, while branching out to support nonprofits that create positive impact on the community, providing financial support along with substantial investments of their time. “Supporting Greenville’s nonprofit community benefits us, o ers things to us, and makes Greenville a better place to live.” Kelly Odom
“Working for a company that is consistently giving inspires you to give as your employer gives,” she says. “Artisphere is a huge economic driver for Greenville, and serving on the board intertwines my personal and professional goals.”
As small business owners, Kelly says they are happy to donate to organizations that help the local economy and draw people to the area by enhancing its quality of life.
In addition to her affinity for the arts, over the last five years Katherine has also focused her efforts on addiction rehabilitation. She is a board member at The Family Effect, the philanthropic arm of the Phoenix Center, Greenville County’s largest provider of substance abuse services. Before the pandemic, she volunteered to care for infants at Serenity Place while their mothers participated in treatment. The importance of this work became even more clear as overdose deaths have spiked in the last two years.
He added that CFG staff made the process seamless, with a structure that will serve them well in the present while providing opportunities to bring their boys into the fold.
“Supporting Greenville’s nonprofit community benefits us, offers things to us, and makes Greenville a better place to live,” he says.
“The arts impact education in our schools, help our area thrive economically, and provide cultural benefits to the Greenville community,” Kelly says. “Organizations that focus on Greenville’s history provide a sense of place for newcomers as well as longtime residents.”
The couple’s primary interests are the arts and history. As third-generation owners of the Pickwick Pharmacy on Augusta Road, it’s not surprising that they would be drawn to activities that promote a strong business environment and celebrate the Upstate’s storied past. Serving local residents since 1947, The Pickwick is itself a part of Greenville’s history as well as its future.

To coordinate their giving to these and other groups, the Odoms set up a Donor Advised Fund (DAF) with the Community Foundation of Greenville in September 2021, naming their sons as Successor Advisors.

Kelly has served more than ten years on the board of the Greenville County Historical Society, of which he is a past president. He chaired the Save the Wilkins initiative, which moved the historic Wilkins House, and through that project became active with the statewide organization Preserve South “ItCarolina.wasa call to action when we heard it was going to be demolished,” Kelly says of the 1876 Italianate mansion on Augusta Street that was saved thanks to local activism and community engagement.
“What drew me to MAC is its impact on artists and art education that enrich our community,” he says. “Its contributions to Greenville make it such a worthwhile organization.”
~

Kelly has served four years on the Greenville County Museum of Art’s Museum Association board. He’s in his second year as president of the Metropolitan Arts Council (MAC), where he has served for over a decade.
Katherine, who works as a trust officer at Bank of America, is a board member of Artisphere.

“Our giving felt haphazard,” Kelly says. “We needed a more organized and central way of giving and the Community Foundation provided that for us.”
“Substance use has an effect on the local economy, impacts children, and involves social services as we try to break the cycle,” she says.

Roberto Cortez ABOUT THE ARTIST

Roberto Cortez is originally from Nicaragua where he grew up surrounded by nature’s bright, bold colors of the tropics, the ocean, and the dramatic sunsets that captivated and nurtured his young imagination. He obtained a degree in Industrial Arts from San Francisco State University and worked in different areas of the creative industry throughout the Bay Area. His exposure to different cultural and geographical scenarios shaped his perception of the world and influenced his desire to create art.
Confirmed in compliance with National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations.

Roberto is a self-taught visual artist who relies on intuition and uses art spontaneously to represent subjects, situations, and experiences that are difficult to express with words. He likes experimenting with different media and techniques that allow him to grow artistically. When he refers to his style, he says, “If I had to define my style, I would define it as Free Style… continually evolving and diverse.”
