The goal of this Quality Profile is to showcase to our community what truly makes the Chagrin Falls Exempted Village Schools exceptional.

It goes beyond standardized test scores and offers a more comprehensive look at the value Chagrin Falls Schools offers to the community and what matters the most.

MESSAGE FROM THE Superintendent Dear Community, The strength of the American public education system is based on the development of a school that represents the values and beliefs of a community. There has been an ongoing attempt to legislate educational reform at the state and national level. The vast majority of this reform is built around implementing sanctions for teachers and districts based on an ever-increasing number of standardized tests. State report cards do not define overall quality of our academic program and student preparedness as they enter the next phase of their lives.

This Quality Profile provides an overview of district progress on key quality indicators for a well-rounded, rigorous program that prepares students for success in post-secondary education.

The district engaged the community in a comprehensive strategic planning process throughout the 2013-2014 school year. We have aggressively pursued our vision of obtaining a personalized learning experience for

all students. The attainment of this vision is only accomplished through a well-rounded academic and extra-curricular program providing a variety of options for our students to develop and grow. This plan is evaluated annually as we survey our key stakeholders to monitor progress. As we completed year three of this plan, we evaluated progress and made modifications to the plan based on our current needs within the district.

This Quality Profile is completed annually and released at the beginning of every school year. We are happy that this year the state report card will provide a link to this report as we believe it to better represent our school district.

We will continue to engage our community around the ongoing work of defining our success locally and utilize this as a tool to report our progress. We are very open to and appreciative of your feedback.

AWARDS & ACCOLADES Chagrin Falls Middle School is a National Blue Ribbon School (2010), as well as listed on the Ohio Schools to Watch designation. Both of these are the two highest accolades given to a middle school.

Mike Daugherty was selected to be Certified Google Innovator. He was also elected the Vice Chair of the Ohio chapter of CoSN (Consortium of School Networking) Bobbie Serensky named Chagrin Falls Teacher of the Year.

Jeff McLean was named Chagrin Falls Support Staff Employee of the Year.

Chagrin Falls High School received the Ohio’s State Board of Education first annual All A Awards for receiving A’s on every aspect of school performance measured on Ohio’s School Report Card.

Lisa Shannon received the 2016 - 2017 Kathleen D. Shelby Outstanding Service Award for removing communication barriers for Ohio’s children given by The Ohio School Speech Pathology Educational Audiology Coalition.

Nancy Kevern selected as the 2016-17 ITIP Technology Using Teacher of the Year.

Chagrin Falls Schools participated in the Google Reference District Program, a pilot program that showcased how the district is achieving exemplary things with Google tools. The district is now one of the first districts in the country to be selected as a "Google for Education Reference School."

Over the past three years, over 130 of our gifted/advanced students in grades 3-9 have participated in Northwestern University’s Midwest Academic Talent Search (NUMATS), which provides the opportunity to take above-grade level assessments, now including the PSAT 8/9 (grades 3-6), and the ACT and/or SAT in grades 6-9. Each year, our topscoring students are recognized by the Board. Four of our students have been recognized at the national level for their outstanding scores within the past three years.

Four district staff members representing all buildings completed the rigorous level 1 Wilson certification.

Wilson is a multi-sensory intervention designed to increase reading fluency in struggling readers.

The special education department increased its capacity to serve students with Autism and low incidence disabilities through the specialized training and teacher leader development.

Intervention Specialist, Mrs. Jacqueline Gerber, was recently granted TEACCH Certified Practitioner status, which qualifies her to train the Chagrin Falls teaching staff on this highly effective and researchbased intervention.

Project Lead the Way

Through Ohio Department of Education Competency-Based Grant funds, we purchased PLTW K-8 instructional modules and resources for all students and provided PLTW training for three of our K-8 teachers. As of the 2016-17 school year, all K-8 students were engaged in PLTW via elective (Encore) courses within their school.

BRIDGE

As a part of our district commitment to provide rigorous and relevant curriculum to maximize student potential, Project Lead the Way (PLTW), a nationally acclaimed STEM program, was first implemented in 2016-17. This problem-based program provides hands-on learning opportunities which engage students in critical thinking, collaboration, and authentic real-world application of skills.

World

The Chagrin Falls Schools’ Bridge to the World program complements the vision, mission, and beliefs of the district’s strategic plan. As the district strives to develop the concept of personal learning pathways to provide more student choice, the opportunities provided by this international program will provide motivation for lifelong learning. This, along with students embracing diversity and stewardship of human and material resources, as well as persevering through challenges and teamwork and collaboration, are only a few of the beliefs that lend to our students’ international learning experiences.

The Bridge to the World program allows both staff and students to broaden their horizons and develop cultural awareness of other countries.

These educational trips allow an expansion of the educational process that is unattainable in the classroom. In the past, Chagrin Falls High School has traveled to China, South Africa, Egypt, Spain, Morocco, France and Costa Rica. These travel experiences not only allow for sight-seeing, but also provide opportunities for students to partake in homestays, language immersion programs and community service opportunities that include building houses and helping repair schools in impoverished areas. In 2017, students and staff traveled to Spain in the spring and summer.

After touring parts of Greece and Italy, students participated in the Leadership Summit in Milan.

ARTS/MUSIC HIGHLIGHTS

All Kindergarteners performed in a Valentine’s Day show for families.

Parent volunteers presented art appreciation lessons in all classrooms.

The 3rd Grade Tiger Beats sang at the presentation of the mural at the Chagrin Valley Arts Center and in the Memorial Day Parade.

All Kdg-3rd graders participated in the One School One Book Program by reading, Ribsy!

All 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders performed in the Gurney Holiday Show, “Gurney Bandstand!”

All 1st and 3rd grade Buddy Classes participated in a physical education ice skating lesson at The Pond.

All Kindergarten and 2nd grade Buddy Classes participated in a swimming lesson at the Wembly Club.

All 2nd graders filled out electronic family trees in Spanish Class using all Spanish names and titles.

All 3rd graders’ artistic productions of Guitar Mania were displayed in local shop windows throughout the Village of Chagrin Falls.

Two Encore Curriculum Nights were held in the spring at which Kindergarten3rd graders led their parents through activities and skills they had learned in art, music, physical education, Spanish, and Technology.

Intermediate School

ARTS/MUSIC HIGHLIGHTS •

More than 200 5th and 6th grade students participated in the Intermediate School Band this past school year.

The CFIS Select Choir (our auditioned choir) performed in five different concerts this year, including ones at Holly Hall, Meals on Wheels, and the Chagrin Falls Memorial Day Parade.

This group was made up of 40 fifth and sixth grade students.

Students learned to sing in 2-3 parts with repertoire from Classical Literature, World Folk Music and Broadway Music.

The 2016-2017 school year added a newly formed nonauditioned choir that met during the school day as one of the students’ music choices. The choir consisted of 72 fifth and sixth grade students. Students learned to sing in 2 parts with repertoire from American Folk Music, Classical Literature, to Popular Music.

Tiger Beats non-auditioned choir is home to fourth grade choir members where they combine with the third grade students at Gurney.

•

We had 11 singers from grades 4 and 5 participate in the OMEA All State Children's Chorus. The performance was at OMEA’s state convention in Cleveland on Feb. 2, 2017. The choir was directed by Dr. Judy Bowers, professor of choral music at Florida State University. The NE Regional rehearsals were hosted by Chagrin Falls and directed by Patricia Haynish.

More than 132 students in grades 3-12 participated in our community theater productions of “Peter Pan” and “The Adventures of Lewis and Clark!”

Students at CFIS build a strong musical foundation in General Music class in the 4th grade, and then can choose to continue in General Music or participate in Band or Orchestra as fifth and sixth graders. The band and orchestra students each perform two concerts per year. All fifth and sixth grade students all also welcome to join the fifth-sixth grade CFIS choir as part of their extended homeroom beginning at the start of the 2017-2018 school year.

We had 10 singers from grades 5, 6, and 7 participate in the Ohio Choral Director’s Association (OCDA) Honor Choir.

The performance was at the OCDA state conference on Wednesday, June 21 at Otterbein College. The director was Dr. Ann Usher, director of the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Chorus and a professor at the University of Akron. The NE Regional rehearsals were hosted by Chagrin Falls and were conducted by Patricia Haynish.

Seeing alumni on Broadway, TV, creating Disney movies, lots of stuff like that, makes me realize that Chagrin is a special place for the arts and we can do almost anything in the arts if we work really hard. Student’s artwork are entered in the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization that identifies teenagers with exceptional artistic and literary talent and brings their remarkable work to a national audience through The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Teens in grades 7 through 12 can apply in 28 categories of art and writing for the chance to earn scholarships and have their works exhibited and/or published. A panel comprised of local professional artists and art educators jury the exhibition and select the awarded pieces from nearly 1,700 entries.

FISCAL STEWARDSHIP Dear Community, At the close of the fiscal year, the district’s cash reserves represented approximately 35% of annual revenues. Fiscal year 2017 general fund expenditures totaled $27,191,000, a 3.5% increase over the prior year.

Operational Transfers and Advances increased significantly due to the successful bond campaign in May. With approval from the Board of Education, the general fund advanced $2.6 million to the capital improvement fund, enabling work to commence on the 7-12 campus in preparation of the upcoming school year.

General operating dollars provide resources needed to support objectives of the strategic plan, district-wide educational goals and personalized learning initiatives. In May, residents supported a 5.5 mill operating levy combined with a 3.4 mill bond issue. These additional operating funds are projected to provide resources necessary for operations through 2020. The bond proceeds will be used to refresh the Intermediate School building which is slated to re-open in 2019. Local revenue sources accounted for 83% of the district’s general operating revenues last year. State funding comprised the remaining 17% - no growth is expected through 2019.

The Popular Annual Financial Report (PAFR) was created for the first time last year. The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) has given an Award for Outstanding Achievement in Popular Annual Financial Reporting to the Chagrin Falls Exempted Village School District for its Popular Annual Financial Report for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2016. The Award for Outstanding Achievement in Popular Annual Financial Reporting is a prestigious national award recognizing conformance with the highest standards for preparation of state and local government popular reports.

The district recently earned the Auditor of State Award from David Yost for demonstrating exemplary financial reporting in accordance with GAAP standards.

Additionally, the Chagrin Falls Exempted Village School District earned the “Auditor of State Award with Distinction” in recognition of the District’s FY16 Audit Report. The District received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) for the 17th consecutive year. Fiscal Year 2016 marked the third year the Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO) presented the Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting Award to the District for its Comprehensive Annual Financial Report.

THE INNOVATION CENTER The Chagrin Falls Exempted Village Schools designed and built a new learning space called the Innovation Center last year through the generous donation of many community members and the support of the Chagrin Falls Education Foundation. The Innovation Center creates a flexible learning environment for our students that integrates technology, fosters creativity and encourages them to reach beyond the traditional educational boundaries. The 4,300 square foot Innovation Center is located on the 7-12 Campus and includes three distinct, yet interconnected spaces, including a research center, collaboration classroom and a Maker’s Space, or “Fab Lab.” These spaces help to bring students’ ideas to life with 3D printers, embroidery machines, laser cutters, tools and more.

The Innovation Center has been used this first year for so many learning opportunities. For example, our Project Lead the Way courses have used the lab for Design & Modeling and Automation & Robotics.

All middle school students use these classes to experience the resources of the Innovation Center and have an opportunity to use the equipment as it relates to the curriculum. In addition to STEM classes, the glass design provides the ability for those curious to view. There is a great deal of research that validates learning by watching in addition to the valuable engagement it provides. Teachers utilized the collaboration space for presentations in many aspects, from learning and writing about bacteria to AP research presentations. Destination Imagination students coded and worked with ozobots. During a French extension activity, students made soap molds for their soap project. Student interns helped others learn the machines and started with basic projects.

There are plans to extend the Maker Space to lego robotics and usage of Fab Lab for interdisciplinary units, while completing digital morning announcements from the Innovation Center.
