The Priority of Relationships

Relationships matter. Throughout His earthly ministry, Jesus showed us their importance. From the many hours spent with His disciples to His close friendship with Mary, Martha and Lazarus to many more, our Lord invested in people and sought to meet their needs.

A Common Vision At this time of year, as we highlight our Thanksgiving offering, I am happy to point out the priority of the relationships that flow in and through our partnership with the Diocese of Honduras. This union is based on far more than both dioceses being in the Episcopal Church. We have forged deep personal relationships there, and have a common vision for evangelism, church growth and renewal.

That common vision moves me to enthusiastically support designating our Thanksgiving offering for the Diocese of Honduras School of Theology. I am profoundly excited about the kingdom potential of our gifts.

A Strong Partnership In fact, relationships are what brought about our connection with the Diocese of Honduras in the first place. Our own Bishop Bill Folwell traveled to Honduras in 1974 to participate in hurricane relief because he had a relationship with clergy there. By the late 1970s, Bishop Folwell forged a partnership with none other than Bishop Hugo Pina-Lopez, who recently passed away after an extended ministry right here in Central Florida. Our continuing relationships with the people of Honduras have kept this partnership strong.

Under Bishop Hugo’s leadership, the Diocese of Honduras grew from a handful of churches to 26

during the time he was there. In some ways, his work set the stage for the need that the School of Theology is trying to meet because the growth has continued. And it is because of that growth and the need to continue to expand and plant new churches that the School of Theology exists.

A Personal Friendship This has been particularly true under Bishop Lloyd Allen, the current bishop, who happens to be not just a colleague, but my friend. The more I’ve gotten to know him, the more I admire and respect him. He is someone I’m happy to support and to encourage our diocese to support because I believe he lives with a tremendous amount of biblical faithfulness and integrity – rare commodities, indeed.

In other words, I’m not just recommending this offering because the Diocese of Honduras is our companion diocese and this is what the leaders have requested. I recommend it because of our relationship. I truly believe in what is happening there and how God is using Bishop Allen and his people in the country of Honduras.

As a part of our continuing relationship, I traveled to the Diocese of Honduras two years ago for its Diocesan Convention and met a number of deeply committed Christian leaders. In terms of their faith, there is no lack of vitality. These people love Jesus and want to serve Him. So how do you train people who already have a strong faith in Christ and commitment to ministry? The School of Theology is the obvious answer.

Good, faithful leadership is how local churches get renewed and how new churches get planted. It makes sense to me that we financially support the institution that is committed to training the leadership, both clergy and lay. Scripture instructs us to “equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ” (Eph. 4:12), and the School of Theology is committed to doing just that.

A Holy Responsibility Finally, relationship underlies our giving to this offering because we bear a holy responsibility to support our Christian sisters and brothers in the rest of the Episcopal Church. That’s what God asks of us, and He has given us the financial resources and the relationships to make it possible. Like Jesus, we can invest in people and seek to meet their needs. And one avenue in which we can do this with real integrity is to support what’s happening in the Diocese of Honduras through its School of Theology.

Relationships matter, and you have the opportunity to touch relationships for eternity by giving to this vital offering. Pray with me as we consider what God would have us do.

Task Force to Discuss Covenant of Marriage Resolution A227 Calls for Appointees to Seek Mutual Flourishing in the Church

T

he Diocese of Central Florida announced on Sept. 19 that Bishop Greg Brewer officially accepted an invitation Bishop Greg Brewer from Presiding Bishop Michael Curry to serve on the Communion Across Difference Task Force.

The task force was established as a result of Resolution A227 that was passed at the 2018 General Convention of The Episcopal Church in July in Austin, Texas.

A total of 14 individuals will comprise the task force, with appointees split evenly between those who affirm same-sex marriage and those who oppose.

Below is Resolution A227 Communion Across Difference as reported in the Episcopal Church Virtual Binder:

A227 Communion Across Difference Resolved, That the 79th General Convention direct the Presiding Bishop and the President of the House of Deputies to appoint jointly a Task Force on Communion across Difference, consisting of not more than 14 people, who represent the diversity in this Church including members from countries other than the United States; and be it further Resolved, That half of the members appointed hold that marriage is a “covenant between a man and a woman” (BCP, 422), half of whom hold that marriage is a “covenant between two people” (Resolution 2018A085), in the presence of God, and that all of those appointed seek a pathway toward mutual flourishing in The Episcopal Church; and be it further

Resolved, That the Task Force seek a lasting path forward for mutual flourishing consistent with this Church’s polity and the 2015 “Communion across Difference” statement of the House of Bishops (https://www.episcopalchurch.org/library/article/mind-house-bishops-statement-‘communion-across-difference’), affirming (1) the clear decision of General Convention that Christian marriage is a covenant between two people, of the same sex or of the opposite sex, (2) General Convention’s firm commitment to make provision for all couples asking to be married in this Church to have access to authorized liturgies; and also affirming (3) the indispensable place that the minority who hold to this Church’s historic teaching on marriage have in our common life, whose witness the Church needs; and be it further Resolved, That the Task Force consult widely with members of this Church who represent its diversity of cultural background, age, race, gender, gender identity, and sexual orientation, particularly its members in countries other than the United States; and also with representatives reflecting the diversity of views and voices of the Anglican Communion, our full-communion ecumenical partners, and those churches with whom we carry on ecumenical dialogues; and be it further Resolved, That the Task Force report and make recommendations to the 80th General Convention, ending its term at that time except by further action of General Convention; and be it further Resolved, That the General Convention request the Joint Standing Committee on Program, Budget and Finance to consider a budget allocation of $75,000 for the implementation of this resolution.

‘Stop the Hate’ Focus of Memorial for Pittsburgh Victims

A

place of worship should be a safe place. But, Saturday, at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, it wasn’t. A gunman took the lives of 11 and injured six more.

A standing-room-only crowd gathered Oct. 30 at the Congregation of Reform Judaism (CRJ) in Orlando to remember and honor those killed in the Pittsburgh mass shooting. Many wiped their eyes when the names of the dead were read at the beginning of the service.

Lee Sisselsky, a former member at Tree of Life and now a member of CRJ, brought the Steel City to Central Florida with a quick history of his time at the Pittsburgh synagogue.

One common theme among the speakers from multiple faiths and backgrounds included another call to “Stop the Hate.”

“Anti-Semitism has no place in our culture,” said Bishop Greg Brewer, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Central Florida. “We’re here to stand against hatred and violence against any religious group.”

In a clear sign of solidarity, religious leaders from numerous denominations took turns speaking out against the violence and condemned the attacks.

Many called for an end to anti-Semitism rhetoric and other hate speech that has mushroomed in today’s society.

Rabbi Steven Engel of Congregation of Reform Judaism said, “We believe words do matter, and our leaders have a responsibility for what they say. It’s across

Anti-Semitic comments were shouted by the shooter during the gunfire.

“Human beings have moral agency,” McConnell said. “Someone chose to hate and chose to kill. And now we are faced with a choice as well – to do nothing, or to reject this hatred in the strongest possible words and actions, and to refute in every way, in every forum, the

Thousands expected for ‘Keep Saying Yes to Jesus’ Revival

vangelism will be on full display, replete with plenty of

music and praise and one of the Episcopal Church’s most dynamic speakers, in February when the Diocese of Central Florida celebrates its golden anniversary.

Presiding Bishop Michael Curry, who made worldwide headlines earlier this year when he delivered the sermon at the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, will be the guest preacher for the 2019 Diocesan Convention’s “Keep Saying Yes to Jesus” 50th Anniversary Revival on Friday, Feb. 1, at First Baptist Church in Orlando.

The convention business session convenes Saturday, Feb. 2, at Trinity Prep in Winter Park, with an address from Bishop Greg Brewer along with special presentations, elections, adoption of the 2019 budget, and other matters. A special luncheon also will be held.

“I’m thrilled that (Bishop Curry’s) official visit to our diocese will coincide with our 50th anniversary,” said the Rev. Canon Tim Nunez, Canon to the Ordinary for the Diocese of Central Florida. “This revival is a tremendous opportunity to turn our focus from the past to our future – and the work that lies ahead to share and serve Jesus in our communities.”

The revival revolves around Bishop Greg Brewer’s advice to Central Florida Episcopalians and fellow Christians to continually seek out and have Jesus in their lives. Inspired by Curry’s revival

Bishop Michael Curry service at the 2018 General Convention in Texas, Brewer has labeled the 2019 Diocesan Convention as a Kingdom-Worthy worship service that will include diverse music, stirring testimonies of faith, and thought-provoking preaching.

With Curry expected to deliver yet another energetic sermon on opening night, the Diocese of Central Florida reserved one of the area’s largest venues – First Baptist of Orlando – to accommodate what leaders say will be a huge crowd. An estimated 4,500 people are expected to attend the service on Feb. 1.

“I am very excited that Presiding Bishop Michael Curry is coming to our Diocesan Convention,” said Father Scott Holcombe, rector of St. David’s by the Sea Episcopal Church in Cocoa Beach.

“Not only is it the 50thAnniversary of our Diocese, but the thrust of convention will be evangelism.

“I knew Michael Curry many years ago when we both served in the Diocese of North Carolina and we worked on a diocesan committee together,” Holcombe said. “I have also heard about the Friday evening service … and believe this will be a great opportunity to not only minister to our own folks, but that service may also be an opportunity for us to invite persons who have not yet made a commitment to Christ where they may hear and respond to the Gospel invitation!”

The Diocesan Convention will be, in fact, one of many revivals for Curry, whose speaking ability has inspired many around the world. “This year and next, Bishop Curry will hold similar revivals all over the country with the purpose of sharing the good news of Jesus

Christ and inviting people into the Jesus Movement,” Brewer said in his column in the September-October issue of the Central Florida Episcopalian.

The Jesus Movement originally began as an Evangelical Christian movement in the 1960s and 1970s on the West Coast of the U.S. before fading in the 1980s. That worldwide movement influenced and helped create other contemporary movements, including the Episcopal branch of the Jesus Movement.

Information for Nominations and Elections – 2019 Positions to be filled by election at the 2019 Convention:

STANDING COMMITTEE

The Standing Committee is a Council of Advice to the Bishop. When there is no Bishop, the Standing Committee is the Ecclesiastical Authority for all proper purposes. The Standing Committee consists of four clerical members (who shall be elected for 4-year terms) and three lay members (who shall be elected for 3-year terms). The Standing Committee generally meets monthly or at the special call of the President of the Standing Committee or the Bishop. The Standing Com mittee serves as the Resolutions Committee for all Regular and Special Meetings of the Convention.

To be elected: • One clergy person to be elected to a 4-year term • One lay person to be elected to a 3-year term The terms of The Reverend Gary Jackson and Mr. Orman Kimbrough will expire at the conclusion of this Convention. Mr. Kimbrough is not eligible for re-election at this Convention. The one-year term of The Reverend Gary Jackson will expire at the conclusion of this Convention; he is eligible for election at this Convention.

NOTE: The President of the Standing committee serves ex officio as a member of the Diocesan Board. No other person may serve on the Standing Committee and the Diocesan Board at the same time (Canon VI.2).

DIOCESAN BOARD

The Diocesan Board is the Board of Directors of the corporation known as the Diocese of Central Florida, Incorporated. The affairs of the Diocese not falling within the exclusive province of the Bishop shall be managed by the Diocesan Board. Members of the Board shall be elected for 3-year terms. The Diocesan Board generally meets monthly or at the call of the Ecclesiastical Authority.

Former Diocesan Bishops Expect a Riveting Convention in 2019

he 2019 Diocesan Convention is expected to be a historic event as Presiding Bishop Michael Curry will join Bishop Greg Brewer of the Diocese of Central Florida for what should be one of the most heralded assemblies in a generation.

Curry made headlines worldwide earlier this year when he delivered the sermon at the

Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. He also oversaw a memorable General Convention of The Episcopal Church this summer in Austin, Texas.

The 2019 Diocesan Convention should be just as riveting. The Diocese of Central Florida and Brewer are presenting the 2019 annual convention with a theme of “Keep Saying Yes to Jesus” as an invitation to a kingdom-worthy event that is being tabbed as a revival. To help commemorate the occasion, the Central Florida Episcopalian interviewed two former bishops in the Diocese of Central Florida to share a little bit about their spiritual background, what their thoughts are on Curry coming to Orlando, and for the Church’s emphasis on evangelism in the 21st century.

1970-1989 How many total years have you been in the Episcopalian faith, and how many years as a member of the clergy?

Bishop William Folwell, who was ordained deacon and priest in 1952, and consecrated bishop Feb. 9, 1970, is delighted that Presiding Bishop Michael Curry will be present at the 2019 Diocesan Convention in 2019.

I was baptized in an Episcopal Church as an infant and have stayed an active Episcopalian all my life. I was working as a traffic engineer for the City of Miami when I finally accepted what I believed to have been “the call to ordained ministry.” I was accepted at Seabury-Western Seminary and my brand-new wife and I sold the car and took a bus from Miami to Evanston (Illinois) to begin seminary.

My wife (Chris) got a job right away and worked all three years to help pay the bills. Sadly, she died this last November.

Bishop William Folwell served as Bishop of Central Florida from 1970-1989.

Shortly after retiring, he moved to Hendersonville, North Carolina.

I was ordained deacon and priest in 1952, and consecrated bishop Feb. 9, 1970. I served as Bishop of Central Florida until I retired January 1990. Shortly after retiring, we moved to Hendersonville, North Carolina. We attend St. James Church here.

What are your thoughts on the Presiding Bishop Michael Curry coming to Orlando for our 2019 Diocesan Convention?

I am delighted Bishop Curry will be present at the diocesan convention in 2019. I am inspired by him any time I can hear him.

How do you think Bishop Curry’s Jesus Movement is being accepted these days in the Episcopalian faith?

His Jesus Movement is a great idea, but I can only hope and pray that it will bear

much fruit. We Episcopalians have SO MUCH to offer, but we don’t do much to SELL it. We are always glad to “welcome people” but to “go after them” is not our norm! I admit to my own weakness in this regard, but it is still not too late!!

Our 2019 Diocesan Convention theme is “Keep Saying Yes to Jesus.” What are your thoughts on the Church’s strong push for evangelism?

(As part of the conversation of “Keep Saying ‘Yes to Jesus’), create some questions and personalize them, so that each person is asking “what do you want me to do about … ?”

How do you think the 2019 Diocesan Convention can make us better Christians in these trying times?

I don’t think conventions make better Christians. Only God can do that, with each person’s willingness to say “Yes” to God regarding specific questions or issues.

How many total years have you been in the Episcopalian faith, and how many years as a member of the clergy?

I was baptized as an infant in St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in South Glastonbury, Connecticut, where my parents had been married. They moved almost immediately afterward to La Grange, Illinois, and I began attending Emmanuel Episcopal Church there at age three, when my baby-sitters (twin girls) asked my parents if they could take me with

them to Sunday School. So, I have been an Episcopalian all my life.

I am currently the senior pastor of the Lake of the Woods Church, a multi-denominational congregation in a lakeside community about 15 miles west of Fredericksburg, Virginia. A significant number of members here were previously parishioners in Fairfax when I was rector of Truro Episcopal Church from 1976 to 1989. I serve here with the permission and blessing of (the Diocese of) Virginia.

What are your thoughts on the Presiding Bishop Michael Curry coming to Orlando for our 2019 Diocesan Convention?

I think it is wonderful that the Presiding Bishop will be your speaker at Convention. Michael Curry is a good friend, and I was delighted to have him give an evangelistic preaching series a number of years ago when I was Diocesan Bishop. Central Florida has been privileged to have visits from every Presiding Bishop since John Allin (John Allin, Edmond Browning, Frank Griswold, Katharine Schori, Michael Curry). Bishop Curry is one of the most riveting preachers of this generation, and I expect God will greatly bless his ministry at Convention.

How do you think Bishop Curry’s Jesus Movement is being accepted these days in the Episcopalian faith?

Bishop John Howe, who presently serves in the Diocese of Virginia, thinks it is wonderful that Presiding Bishop Michael Curry will be the guest preacher at the 2019 Diocesan Convention.

Curry’s preaching. It used to be joked that Episcopalians “dread the E word”; I think Bishop Curry has helped to significantly change that. The whole world was deeply startled by Michael’s dynamic preaching style at this summer’s Royal Wedding. Episcopalians were happy to smile and say, “Yeah, that’s our guy.”

Our 2019 Diocesan Convention theme is “Keep Saying Yes to Jesus.” What are your thoughts on the Church’s strong push for evangelism?

We have long recognized our need to major in evangelism – the 1990s were officially designated as a “Decade of Evangelism” and we have repeatedly set goals for greatly increasing the membership in our church (which is NOT the same thing, but the two are certainly related). Tragically, our proclamation of

the Gospel has often fallen short. I am thrilled to have a Presiding Bishop who is not just talking about evangelism but doing it. It has often been said that “the Church is always one generation away from extinction.” Unless we are continually bringing new believers to Jesus, we will have failed in one of the most basic elements of our calling as his followers: “preach the Gospel, make disciples.”

How do you think the 2019 Diocesan Convention can make us better Christians in these trying times?

Our prayer must always be, “Lord, revive, restore, and renew your Church, beginning with me.”

Rectors Reference How ‘Keep Saying Yes to Jesus’ Has Impacted Their Lives 2019

ith one of the Episcopal Church’s most dynamic speakers – Presiding Bishop Michael Curry – coming to Central Florida for the 2019 Diocesan Convention in February, the Central Florida Episcopalian asked rectors throughout the diocese for a personal testimonial on the 50th Anniversary theme of “Keep Saying Yes to Jesus.”

If there is one thing that I can say after 25 years of ministry and 55 years of life, it is you never know where God will lead you to accomplish His work when you say yes to Him! Becoming a priest was the last thing that I thought I would do after growing up as a “preacher’s kid!” I was an acolyte from the time it was allowed. I grew up attending E.Y.C. (Episcopal Young Church People). As a teen, I was involved in the diocese on the Youth Action Committee and participated in “Happening” to the point of leading one as its “rector” (oh, the irony!). Heck, my first paid job was mopping floors and cleaning bathrooms at Gloria Dei, Cocoa, where dad was the priest. As a preacher’s kid, I felt that I had paid my dues and it was now MY turn to follow my heart. As I entered college, my plan was to get my degree and license in order to become a therapist. I wanted to run my own clinic, be my own boss, control my

And then, God stepped in. Actually, He had never stepped out; I just kept sending him to voice mail.

Over time, through dreams, visions, and events of Biblical proportion, God kept inserting His invitation into my life faster than I could decline. It was never forced, but always present. And then the day came, where His spirit washed over me and my “no” became a “yes!” That “yes” brought direction, education, vocation, and a community of people who have blessed my life in ways that I couldn’t imagine. It’s not always easy; in fact, some days are downright hard. But saying “yes” to Jesus has been the best thing that I’ve ever done. If you’ve never said “yes” to Him, I suggest that you give it a try!

One of my spiritual mentors would often say, “What are you waiting for, come and die!” Saying yes to Jesus often feels like death. Loving my enemies feels like death. Blessing those who curse you feels like death. Forgiving those whose sin has hurt me feels like death. Honestly, saying no to temptation often feels like death in the moment.

C. S. Lewis said, “Christ says, “Give me all. I don’t want so much of your time and so much of your money and so much of your work: I want Father John Gullett you. I have not come to torment your natural self, but to kill it. No half-measures are any good. I don’t want to cut off a branch here and a branch there, I want to have the whole tree down. I don’t want to drill the tooth, or crown it, or stop it, but to have it out. Hand over the whole natural self, all the desires which you think innocent as well as the ones you think wicked—the whole outfit. I will give you a new self instead. In fact, I will give you myself: my own will shall become yours.”

My father is a Presbyterian minister, and his life in ministry has included some very hard things, and when I first felt the Lord calling me to give my

I would pray and say, “Lord, I’ll do anything but that.” And the Lord graciously would not let me rest as long as I was trying to hold out on Him. After months of restlessness, I finally surrendered. I finally prayed, “Lord, I will go wherever you want me to go and do whatever you want me to do.” As soon as I prayed those words, I knew that the Lord was calling me into ministry. And now my life in ministry, first as a Presbyterian minister and church planter, and now as an Episcopal priest, has included some very hard things (which is true for most of us regardless of our vocation).

And so many times I’ve been tempted to say to God again, “anything but that. Anything but my job. Anything but my health.

Anything but my child. Anything but …”

And yet, I am more convinced than ever that the only way to a life of true flourishing is to keep saying yes to Jesus. Saying yes to Jesus often feels like death, but in reality, it is saying yes to life, to grace, and to hope.

Rector, St. Richard’s Episcopal Church, Winter Park Keep saying “yes” to Jesus, despite difficulties and confusion. Keep saying “yes” to Jesus even when those in the world who use His name most, use it to divide and not unite. Keep saying “yes” to Jesus from the time you can sing, “Jesus Loves Me This I Know,” until the music that is in your head is “Christ within me.”

The Rev Christopher Brathwaite Interim rector, St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Lake Mary Fifty-one years ago, when I was leaving my hometown Barbados, a very dear friend said to me, “Chris, there are lots of young men in America standing up for Jesus, do not let me down.” Those words still ring in my ears to this day. There are lots of situations that impact a young mind and those impacts are enduring.

Before I left Barbados, I recalled my second cousin was lying on his dying bed. He was just 30 years old and everyone who knew anything, thought he was poisoned. The members of the Pentecost Church came to usher him home in song, and they sang an old spiritual: “Where can I go, O where can I go, needing a refuge for my soul.

Needing a friend to help me in the end, where can I go but to the Lord.” Those are some of the incidences and the statements that have laid a solid foundation for me to say yes to Jesus; who He is and what He means to me in my journey through life.

Being an Episcopal priest gives me an opportunity to live out the Jesus way in my actions,

Brathwaite There is one thing to be a Christian, but it is more important to be known as a Christian; one who stands for Jesus and lets His light shine through your life.

The Presiding Bishop’s message on saying yes to Jesus is the real message that leads to the better life with the One who came to save us and show us the better life. Jesus gave us the wherewithal to lead others to the church and to Himself.

Keep saying yes to Jesus empowers me to tell the story of Jesus and His love. I could not tell a story with conviction about someone I did not know; and to know Jesus is to follow His teaching and telling His story to others. When I look back over my 71 years of life, I thank my mother and my sisters for their steadfastness to Jesus, coupled with the nightly prayers of my father, all helped to pave the way for me and my early image of the importance of Jesus in my daily life. All I do now is get closer to Him by study and teaching, and encouraging others to know Him.

What Is Canterbury?

Canterbury Retreat & Conference Center in Oviedo was established in 1982, with a mission and ministry of being a center for spiritual growth. The picturesque 48-acre property that has Lake Gem as its centerpiece, Canterbury is famous for its hospitality and offering life and ministry skills in a sacred space.

Fifteen employees currently run Canterbury, which has lodging of 40 rooms, double occupancy with private bath. The retreat has five meeting rooms with audio/visual technology. s I walk and drive around our campus of Canterbury Retreat and Conference Center, I reflect on all the wonderful memories and experiences I have had and on how many others have been touched by this ministry of hospitality.

I am truly blessed to have shared this property with the brothers and sisters of our faith who have a deeper understanding of God. Through the many different churches, denominations, seminaries, businesses, organizations and individual personal retreats, it is easy to see how Canterbury has become a special place for so many for finding peace, knowledge and growth. It is an honor as an Episcopalian from the Diocese of Central Florida to serve on a staff and that has shared this special resource with so many thousands of people throughout its 36 years of existence.

With complete facilities to accommodate lodging and eating for conferences and close distance to Orlando, Canterbury’s location is ideal for many organizations and ministries looking for daily and extended meeting space that feels like you’re in the middle of the wilderness but close to everything. This serves well for a variety of needs for many customers.

Where do I begin (with Canterbury, though)? Reflecting on the very beginning of its existence, I look at the first long-time partner, the Rotary Club of Oviedo, which remains loyal and committed to this day. The club moved its weekly meeting here after the completion of the first phase of construction, in 1982.

Canterbury has served as the hub and home base for the club’s meetings, fire-

side chats, community outreach events and all holiday parties. Club president Chuck Drago says “This is home for our club and we feel blessed to establish our “service above self” mission statement to the community of Oviedo. Here we service many projects that include Operation Christmas Child, Bikes for Kids, Back to School supplies’ packing and the annual Easter pancake breakfast for the community. Our partnership with Canterbury has established our club with a strong membership and a highly visible outreach organization to serve our Oviedo community.”

Rotary not only is a weekly financial customer, but is also giving back resources and time to help build a fishing dock and next month the club will rebuild the reflection garden for everyone to enjoy another sacred space.

The “total club effort” motto applies to all members when it comes to helping Canterbury. This is our home and we will serve together in our community.

lake. This is home to approximately 100 members every week that utilize all aspects of our campus. From Bible studies, vestry meetings, receptions, and youth group to services on Sunday morning, this full-time ministry serves the needs for Episcopalians in the Oviedo/Winter springs area.

(Bill) Folwell, second bishop of Episcopal Diocese of Central Florida, Canterbury was created to serve many ministries, most notably the Cursillo Retreat for Episcopal churches. Cursillo is a weekend retreat that reaches out to all 82 parishes who come together from all locations to help establish a relationship with God and develop a loving community within our diocese.

This ministry has served thousands

of participants over the years, offering

four annual retreats to connect to the churches throughout the diocese. We are blessed as Episcopalians in Central Florida to have this resource available to us and to call it our home. Cursillo always looks forward to coming to Canterbury and using its resources for a great time of fellowship and for finding a deeper commitment to Christ.

Looking beyond our Episcopal ministries, we also serve our brother and sister seminarians of other faith traditions. The Methodist Asbury Seminary and Reformed Theological Seminary (RTS) are long-time loyal partners for their one-week intensive studies courses. Canterbury serves as the lodging headquarters for traveling seminarians, as well as providing the meeting and teaching spaces. These intensive classes

are for remote students and our retreat lodging space serves well for these nearby seminaries.

One professor from RTS stays with the students and offers additional counseling and mentoring after hours on the patio with a bonfire for further theological discussions. Adjunct professor and pastor Larry Kirk said: “Canterbury’s grounds are perfect for seminarians to seek a deeper knowledge of God through fellowship and prayer while they attend daily classes. The retreat environment helps them to focus on the calling they have from God from a non-distracted worldly view.”

A Sacred Space … Right in the Middle of Everything

Canterbury Retreat & Conference Center’s peaceful setting is a major reason why it has hosted many different churches, denominations, seminaries, businesses, organizations and individual personal retreats through the years.

Many of these students return for weekly classes throughout their three years of study and feel a welcoming home when then return. This is their home away from home.

The arrival of the Emmaus School of Biblical Studies onto the Canterbury campus is nothing short of amazing.

The Emmaus team called out to God for a place to move its ministry and (members) were answered by the amenities and availability of Canterbury. According to Rev. Tom Phillips, the executive director at the time who reached out to pursue this new location: “Everything lined up through the Lord’s hand for us to establish our new home on Canterbury. Our students truly love it here and feel blessed by the Canterbury grounds and staff. This is their home.”

As a result of the Emmaus ministry moving to Canterbury, Phillips was able to be ordained in the Episcopal Church through our diocese and now serves as the priest-in-charge of Church of the Incarnation located on Canterbury’s grounds. This truly is home.

Another special relationship Canterbury has is with Church of the Incarnation located on the other side of our

Phillips and his ministry team work closely with Canterbury staff to insure we coordinate schedules and have the facilities in line to serve the parishioners and community needs. The big events we do together are the annual Easter Egg Hunt and Fall Bazaar that are advertised and reach throughout the community.

Incarnation feels that this is their homebase church and supports our mission financially, as well as doing organized clean-up days for the campus beautification. Together, we encourage church growth and are a refuge for God’s people sharing the light of Christ through Episcopal liturgy within the community.

The experiences of all of these groups are a positive and well-supported venture and we are fortunate that we can serve through the gift of hospitality with our partners for the growth of God’s kingdom. Our goal is to encourage a relationship through the love and witness of Jesus Christ individually, as well as corporately for the sake of the Gospel. This resonates with our community and our diocese as we serve God’s Church to bring life-changing moments and growth.

In Appreciation of a Canterbury Friend: TOM LANG

TOM LANG Jan. 12, 1944 – April 22, 2018

Thomas “Tom” Frederick Lang, Sr.,

was the longest serving board member to Canterbury Retreat and Conference Center. Tom served on the Canterbury board for almost 20 years as an officer and most recently as chairman. He was well-respected in the community and participated in multiple groups and church-related events. Here are just a few of his accomplishments:

Government and president of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity, and was selected “Spoon Man” by his class.

• A former Trustee of the University of Pennsylvania.

• A U.S. Navy veteran, serving four years on active duty from 1968-1972. He returned to Florida to earn his J.D. from Florida State University.

• Admitted to the Florida Bar in April 1975 and moved to Orlando to join the law firm of Maguire, Voorhis, and Wells. In addition to practicing law for more than 40 years, he was a director of University Housing, Inc., and Campus Suites, Inc., building college student housing.

• Served as the Director of the Kissimmee Convention and Visitors Bureau. Most recently, he was General Counsel at Titan Management, Kissimmee, and of Counsel at Shuffield Lowman, Orlando.

• A member of the Cathedral Church of St. Luke, Orlando, since 1976, where he served as a Sunday school teacher, usher, Cathedral docent, and served two terms as senior warden.

His interests were many: people, history, the Civil War, sports, travel, photography, tennis, walking “Goldie” and spending time with family and friends.

• At the University of Pennsylvania, he earned a B.S. in Economics and an M.B.A. from the Wharton School, served as president of the Men’s Student

Of special interest to Tom was improving the kitchen area at Canterbury. Staff there has been wonderfully serving guests with tired and outdated equipment. One of Tom’s final requests was that in lieu of flowers, donations be

made to Canterbury with special attention to ovens, so the staff can more efficiently turn out even better food.

Canterbury is most grateful for the $12,000 that has been raised so far in his memory, and YES that old oven is now a brand-new Vulcan double convection oven baking cookies to perfection along with other great food! Any additional proceeds will go toward other improvements around the kitchen and campus. Canterbury is so thankful for the Lang family and its connection with Canterbury over the years.

The food, scenery, events, worship, and friendliness all have been a part of Canterbury’s mission for years: a center for spiritual growth that offers hospitality in a sacred space. And that mission will continue thanks to wonderful leaders like Tom. Tom Lang was an inspiration to all and may his memory be eternal. Canterbury can’t express how much of a blessing it has been to have Tom a part of their mission.

From all of us here at Canterbury, we want to thank Tom for all his years of work, service, dedication and his love towards Canterbury.

Canterbury to Help Fight Human Trafficking Through Coffee Sales

lorida is fondly looked at as the Sunshine State replete with beautiful beaches and exciting theme parks. But Florida also is associated with human trafficking – on a record-setting scale.

According to the National Human Trafficking Hotline, Florida ranks third nationally with 604 cases reported in 2017. A staggering 1,601 calls were made to the hotline that year. Only populous states California and Texas rank higher than Florida.

Locally, Orlando ranks third in the nation for calls for assistance, according to a report by Orlando-rising. com. Human trafficking is forced slavery in which victims are subject to sex acts or labor services against their will by traffickers.

Hoping to combat that problem is the Canterbury Retreat & Conference Center in Oviedo, which is setting up a franchise for Palate Coffee in the lobby of its main building. All profits from the sale of Palate Coffee go to the parent ministry called Love Missions, which serves those in local transitional needs and helps prevent victims of human trafficking in Central Florida, according to Canterbury interim director Jim Morical.

The Palate Coffee franchise will be set up in the lobby of Canterbury’s main building. Canterbury’s plan is to purchase, sell and serve fresh-roasted, fair-trade coffee to all guests and visitors beginning Monday, Oct. 15. The lobby is open 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“We have redesigned the lobby to accommodate this offering with a coffee production cart and additional

seating for anyone to grab a coffee any time of the day,” Morical said.

“We are the first extension of Palate coffee outside of the original coffee shop located in downtown Sanford. Our support of Palate coffee is in the purchasing of their roasted coffee and served to all of our guests with their training and marketing of Palate Coffee.”

Palate Coffee originates from the Palate Coffee Brewery, located at 105 W. 2nd St., in historical downtown Sanford. The brewery attracts a diverse group of customers and volunteers. “The first thing we noticed about Palate was the high quality of standards they maintain for all coffee connoisseurs and serving the best and finest coffee available,” Morical said. “In addition to standard coffee beverages, we will offer teas, cold brews, Kumbotchas (fermented, slightly alcoholic, sweetened black or green tea drink), pastries and soft drinks.

l evangelismo será visible, repleto de música y alabanzas, y con la presencia de uno de los oradores más dinámicos de la Iglesia Episcopal, cuando la Diócesis de la Florida Central celebre su aniversario de oro en febrero.

El Obispo Presidente Michael Curry, quien apareció en los titulares mundiales a principios de este año cuando pronunció el sermón en la Boda Real del Príncipe Harry y Meghan Markle, será el predicador invitado para el quincuagésimo aniversario de la Convención Diocesana 2019 “Siga diciendo sí a Jesús”, el viernes, 1ro de febrero, en la Primera Iglesia Bautista de Orlando.

La sesión de negocios de la convención se realizará el sábado, 2 de febrero, en la Trinity Prep en Winter Park, la cual dirigirá el Obispo Greg Brewer. Además, habrá presentaciones especiales, elecciones, aprobación del presupuesto 2019 y otros asuntos. También se celebrará un almuerzo especial.

El avivamiento gira en torno al consejo del obispo Greg Brewer a los episcopales de la Florida Central y a otros cristianos para buscar continuamente y tener a Jesús en sus vidas. Inspirado por el servicio de reavivamiento de Curry en la Convención General de 2018 en Texas, Brewer ha calificado la Convención Diocesana de 2019 como un servicio de adoración digno del Reino que incluirá música diversa, testimonios de fe conmovedores y una predicación que invita a la reflexión.

La prioridad en las relaciones Por Bishop Gregory O. Brewer

Las relaciones importan. A lo largo de su ministerio terrenal, Jesús nos mostró la importancia de ellas. Desde las muchas horas que pasó con sus discípulos hasta su estrecha amistad con María, Marta y Lázaro, y muchos más, nuestro Señor invirtió en las personas y trató de satisfacer sus necesidades.

Una visión común En esta época del año, al destacar nuestra ofrenda de Acción de Gracias, me complace señalar la prioridad de las relaciones que fluyen en y a través de nuestra asociación con la Diócesis de Honduras.

Esta unión va mucho más de ser ambas diócesis de la Iglesia Episcopal. Hemos forjado relaciones personales profundas, y tenemos una visión común para el evangelismo, el crecimiento de la iglesia y la renovación.

Esa visión común me impulsa a apoyar con entusiasmo la designación de nuestra ofrenda de Acción de Gracias para la Escuela de Teología de la Diócesis de Honduras. Estoy profundamente emocionado con el potencial de nuestros dones para el reino.

Una asociación fuerte De hecho, las relaciones son las que provocaron nuestra conexión con la Diócesis de Honduras en primer lugar. Nuestro propio Obispo, Bill Folwell, viajó a Honduras en 1974 para participar en la asistencia de huracanes porque tenía una relación con el clero allí. A fines de la década de los setenta, el Obispo Folwell forjó una alianza con el Obispo Hugo Pina-López, quien falleció recientemente después de un extenso ministerio aquí en la Florida Central. Nuestras relaciones continuas con el pueblo de Honduras han mantenido esta asociación fuerte.

Bajo el liderazgo del Obispo Hugo, la Diócesis de

Honduras creció de cuatro iglesias a veintiséis durante el tiempo que estuvo allí. De alguna manera, su trabajo preparó el escenario para la necesidad que la Escuela de Teología está tratando de satisfacer, porque el crecimiento ha seguido. Y es debido a ese crecimiento, y la necesidad de continuar expandiéndose y de plantar nuevas iglesias, que existe la Escuela de Teología.

Una amistad personal Esto ha sido particularmente cierto en el caso del Obispo Lloyd Allen, el obispo actual, quien no solo es un colega, sino mi amigo. Cuanto más lo conozco, más lo admiro y lo respeto. Él es alguien a quien me complace apoyar y animo a nuestra diócesis a que lo apoye, porque creo que vive con abundancia de fidelidad e integridad bíblica, bienes raros, por cierto.

En otras palabras, no solo estoy recomendando esta ofrenda porque la Diócesis de Honduras es nuestra diócesis compañera y esto es lo que los líderes han solicitado, sino más bien por nuestra relación. Realmente creo en lo que está sucediendo allí y cómo Dios está usando al Obispo Allen y su gente en Honduras.

Como parte de nuestra relación continua, viajé a la Diócesis de Honduras hace dos años para su Convención Diocesana y me reuní con varios líderes cristianos profundamente comprometidos. En cuanto a su fe, no hay falta de vitalidad. Estas personas aman a Jesús y quieren servirle. Entonces, ¿cómo capacitar a personas que ya tienen una fe firme en Cristo y un compromiso con el ministerio?

La Escuela de Teología es la respuesta obvia.

Para mí tiene sentido que apoyemos financieramente a la institución que está comprometida con la capacitación del liderazgo, tanto del clero como del laico. La Escritura nos instruye a “equipar a los santos para la obra del ministerio, para la edificación del cuerpo de Cristo” (Ef. 4:12), y la Escuela de Teología está comprometida a hacer precisamente eso.

Una responsabilidad santa Finalmente, la relación subyace a nuestro dar a esta ofrenda, porque tenemos la responsabilidad santa de apoyar a nuestras hermanas y hermanos cristianos en el resto de la Iglesia Episcopal. Eso es lo que Dios nos pide, y Él nos ha dado los recursos financieros y las relaciones para hacerlo posible.

Como Jesús, podemos invertir en las personas y tratar de satisfacer sus necesidades. Y una vía en la que podemos hacer esto con verdadera integridad es apoyar lo que está sucediendo en la Diócesis de Honduras a través de su Escuela de Teología.

Las relaciones son importantes, y usted tiene la oportunidad de establecer relaciones por la eternidad al dar esta ofrenda vital. Ore conmigo mientras consideramos lo que Dios quiere que hagamos.

gregación cantando al ritmo de la música, y vemos cómo el Evangelio de Jesús, sus enseñanzas, su vida y su espíritu se perciben, en cierto sentido, en la sala a través de las lecturas del Evangelio.

“Y luego, además de eso, todos en la sala giran y se reorientan desde donde están”, señaló Curry. “Se vuelven y se reorientan

frente al lugar del Evangelio y defienden la lectura del Evangelio, para escuchar las enseñanzas de Jesús. En ese momento del Evangelio, la Iglesia se ha convertido en el Movimiento de Jesús, con la vida reorientada en torno a las enseñanzas de Jesús, y en torno a su propio espíritu”.

Los paralelismos entre el Movimiento de Jesús y “Siga diciendo sí a Jesús” son obvios para muchos líderes espirituales, y deberían ayudar a reforzar la importancia del evangelismo. “Creo que el mensaje de ‘Siga diciendo sí a Jesús’ se trata de afirmar que Jesús es nuestro Señor y Salvador, y quien dirige nuestras vidas y ministerios, que es de lo que creo trata el Movimiento de Jesús: seguir a Jesús más audazmente como sus discípulos”, aseveró el Rdo. Brian W. Turner, rector de la Iglesia del Bendito Redentor en Palm Bay, “especialmente en un país y un mundo que continúa siendo más secularizado y, en ocasiones, antagónico con la religión y la Iglesia.

y seguir a Jesús es algo que tenemos que hacer continuamente”, dijo Turner. “Al igual que Jesús habló sobre tomar nuestra cruz todos los días, cada uno de los que seguimos a Jesús debemos seguir diciéndole que sí todos los días, mientras reafirmamos nuestro testimonio de su muerte y resurrección que ha transformado la vida y el ministerio, y la misión a la cual Él nos llama a cada uno de nosotros. Y eso es realmente de lo que se trata el discipulado y el evangelismo”.

Padre Brian Garrison, rector de la Iglesia Episcopal de San Bernabé en Deland, dijo que no hay nada más transformador que el poder salvador de Jesús. Y está emocionado de que Curry esté disponible para dar ese mensaje. “Él es un orador impresionante, y traerá mucha energía y emoción a nuestra reunión”, afirmó Garrison. “Cuando nuestros líderes comienzan a hablar sobre Jesús, más personas están dispuestas a abrazar el poder eficaz de la cruz. Siga diciendo sí a Jesús. No hay otra manera, ¿a dónde más vamos a ir?

l Programa Diocesano de Educación Teológica, nace en el año 1984 producto de la necesidad de levantar clérigos, mujeres y hombres, que sirvieran a la iglesia en Honduras y cuyo crecimiento, por todo el territorio nacional, iniciaba a despegar.

Desde ese entonces han pasado más de un cuarto de siglo ya! Y, en esta labor formativa y de enseñanza, se mencionan nombres como los de: Rev. Carmen Bruni Guerrero, Rev. Robert Sanders, Rev. Rolando Segura, Rev. Boanerges Rosa, Lic. Andrew Bodden y

“Él tiene palabras de vida eterna”, añadió Garrison. “Si comenzamos a escuchar y a obedecer las palabras de Jesús, no hay duda de que el avivamiento tendrá lugar. Sin embargo, como siempre son los avivamientos, es probable que sea diferente de lo que podemos esperar. Espero y ruego por que estemos realmente listos para que el Espíritu de Dios vuelva a infundir vida en nuestros huesos secos. “¿Quién puede resistir el poder y el amor de Dios?”, continuó diciendo Garrison.

“Es a través de la persona y la poderosa obra de Jesús en la vida de una persona que la Iglesia se construirá y las puertas del infierno no prevalecerán. Cualquier otra cosa que no sea Jesús pronto se derrumbará y se marchitará, pero Jesús siempre renovará, revivirá y construirá el Reino de Dios, que no tiene fin. Que seamos su pueblo, que Él sea nuestro Dios, para que el mundo vea a Jesús a través de nosotros, su iglesia”.

St. John the Baptist Parishioner Makes tory for Daughters of the King

ne of Central Florida’s own has taken a place on the national stage: St. John the Baptist’s Krisita Jackson.

Jackson, who has served for years in the Central Florida chapter of Daughters of the King (DOK), recently was elected national president of DOK at the 2018 DOK Triennial Convention this summer in Austin, Texas. Daughters from across the nation met at the Renaissance Austin Hotel June 20-24 to conduct business, and for worship and fellowship.

The election was historic as Jackson is the first African-American Daughter to serve as president in the organization’s 133 years of existence, and the first representative from the Diocese of Central Florida to earn the honor. A member of St. John the Baptist Church in Orlando, she will serve for three years 2018-2021 until the next Triennial convention.

“When Krisita’s name was announced as the national president, the room erupted with jubilation,” said Central Florida DOK 1st Vice President Dr. Karen Adderly Clark. “You could see glory on each face. This was an exhilarating moment for all.”

“My election as president is humbling,” Jackson said. “I never really imagined or aspired to hold this position. I was asked in the spring by a member of the National Council to stand for president. I prayed and listened to hear what God was calling or not calling me to do. I made the decision to do so when I was pointed to the Scripture verse: Isaiah 6:8:

Jackson said the goals are: The process to become national president one is a lengthy one. The National Council Election is part of the business conducted at the Triennial Convention as 15 Daughters are elected to serve on the National Council joined by the presidents of the eight provinces.

Following the election by the general body, the council meets and elects officers, Jackson said. Jackson was elected president by the Council.

“Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I; send me!” That was my answer. The Scripture echoes the words of the Daughters’ motto, which I have lived by for over 19 years:

“The process is a bit different from regular election as Daughters who are eligible are asked to ‘stand’ for office if they feel they are called by God to do so,” Jackson said. “To be eligible, a Daughter must have served at least one three-year term on the council as an elected officer i.e., not a province president or appointee.

“I was appointed to Council to fill a vacancy in 2013 so I was not eligible to stand for election in 2015,” Jackson said. “The council votes and elects from among those who feel called for all offices: president, 1st and 2nd vice president, secretary and treasurer. Those officers make up the Executive Board.”

Jackson said the National Council meets in person annually to conduct the business of The Order. The Executive Board, meanwhile, meets monthly by conference call, she said.

“My second challenge to the Daughters is to become more active in the Jesus Movement of the Episcopal church,” Jackson said. “Our theme for our meeting in Austin was ‘Walk HIS Way.’ Our keynote speakers taught us about evangelism, so now we must go and do!

Diocese of Honduras Gives Thanks to Theological Education Program Diocese presents annual offering to growing seminary

Editor’s note: Each year, the Diocese of Honduras under the leadership of Bishop Lloyd Allen makes a Thanksgiving offering to a person

or organization in need. This year, the Diocese of Honduras has elected to make an offering to the Theological Seminary in Honduras in its effort to raise up good spiritual leaders.

he Diocesan Theological Education Program started in the year 1984 out of necessity to raise up new clergy members, men and women, to serve the church in Honduras, whose growth throughout the national territory was starting to take off.

More than a quarter of a century has passed since then! In this formative and educational labor, a few names are to be mentioned such as: Rev. Carmen Bruni Guerrero, Rev. Robert Sanders, Rev. Rolando Segura, Rev. Boanerges Rosa, Counselor Andrew bodden, and to this day, The Rev. Pascual P. Torres F.+ Each one of the aforementioned deans contributed with their knowledge and dedication to the formation of those who today carry out the labor to accomplish the great commission of taking the gospel to anyone, no matter where they are.

That is how 80 percent of our clergy have been formed and raised up through this Diocesan Theological Education Program.

The Next Step … A New Direction Until now, we dedicated ourselves to form, as mentioned earlier, men and women who have heard

God’s call to serve the church as ordained clergy (deacons, priest, bishops). “And he said to them, ‘Follow me, and I will make you fish for people’.”

However, more and more we are feeling the need to direct our efforts to the formation and training of our lay leaders. These are people that, without having a call to be ordained, wish to nurture and deepen their knowledge in the faith. These trainings help them be better prepared to become a committed person to their local congregation, while being a support for their vestry or the ordained minister responsible for said congregation.

This is not at all a novelty. The Book of Common Prayer tells us that the ministers of the church are “the lay people” (and) from then on continues naming all the other ministries of the church. It recognizes the role of the common man or woman that live their baptismal covenant to the fullest. We are all priests within the same community of faith, and in that same community of faith it is done through ordination, prayer, and laying on of hands.

The Course Because of these statements, a proposal has been put together for the theological education of lay leaders, with enough formality and seriousness that it requires, but without the strictness, years of academic load that is expected for those going through the ordination process.

Methodology Sessions will meet one Saturday a month for the length of one year. Twelve (12) sessions in total that will encompass the following curricular load: Hebrew and Greco-Christian Bible scriptures, Book of

Common Prayer, Ecclesiastic History, and Anglicanism. Through this, we intend to give a “basic tool box” in which they can count in order to respond to any need that may arise.

The Governing Body People with academic degrees at any level, as well as self-taught – meaning people who are formed and have searched to “know more” to deepen their knowledge in a specific area of theology.

Inclusive Ecumenical Orientation One of the characteristics of the Diocesan Theological Education Program since it was founded is its ecumenical vocation. This has been accomplished due to the program’s deep roots in the Anglican faith, its vocation and effort to look for unity in Christ’s church.

As it is found in the book of Ecclesiastes: “The end of the matter; all has been heard.”

Churches to Celebrate Thanksgiving with Services, Dinners, More

hurches around the Diocese of Central Florida will be giving thanks in more ways than one this Thanksgiving.

Parishes will hold special services and/or dinners leading up to and during Thanksgiving Week (Nov. 18-24), including events on Thanksgiving Eve (Nov. 21) and Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 22).

For some churches, doing unto others on Thanksgiving has become quite the tradition. At St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church in Sebastian, a Thanksgiving Day dinner will be served from 4 to 6 p.m., Nov. 22.

The meal, which is prepared in-house by a team of parishioners, will consist of turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans, salad, stuffing and gravy, and dessert, according to Father Dave Newhart, rector at St. Elizabeth’s. Coffee and tea also will be served.

Let Your Light Shine

He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.”

Just before the Offertory I often say, “Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). Those words are far more than a gentle reminder to be generous with your tithes and offerings. They are an invitation to live our lives as an offering to the Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 12:1).

S

ince moving to Asia, those words have taken on additional significance for Linda and me. In much of Asia, there simply is no one shining the light of Jesus Christ. The vast majority of the Buddhists, Muslims, Hindus, and Atheists (or Secularists) across Asia have never met a follower of Jesus and will never have a friend who knows and worships Jesus as Lord. Never … at all … throughout their whole lifetime, unless something changes so that the light can shine here.

Linda and I were called out of our church home in Central Florida to serve with TEAM, a global alliance that works to establish reproducing churches where the need is greatest. We invest in individuals who work to bring the light of Jesus to dark places in Asia. My role is to recruit, orient, and equip individuals to work and serve the Lord here, and Linda’s role is to keep them spiritually and emotionally healthy, so they can stay as long as the Lord keeps the doors open.

To give you an idea of the challenges we face: we recently visited two of our colleagues in a city of 7 million people. A ministry team was in crisis; their plans had been severely disrupted by government actions.

The four of us worked together under God’s guidance to come up with a two-part action plan to address this crisis. Part 1 was for Linda to help team members work through stress, fear, and grief so they could make decisions about how to move forward in ministry. Part 2 was for me to explore options and identify what we could learn from this crisis, so we can take proactive steps that benefit our other efforts in Asia.

Not all challenges are the result of the culture – some come out of the ordinary realities of life. The colleagues mentioned above have a mother living in Florida who is slipping into dementia. So, we also discussed the emotional and strategic impact that caring for a loved one from a long distance is having on them as individuals and on the team’s ability to function well. When we saw them again a week later, they were bubbling over with gratitude. They had a new sense of freedom to make some of those decisions that they need to make.

One consequence of the changing political and economic environment is an urgent need for people to be better prepared to face the difficulties involved in letting their light shine “at the ends of the earth.” I am, therefore, spearheading a new innovation lab, where new and current workers can learn and explore how to serve the Lord in dark places, with few resources and possible persecution. If we can give individuals a better start, they will do better and stay longer.

We are grateful to the individuals and parishes in the diocese who have already become partners with us through prayer, finances, and more! We are dependent upon God’s grace and His people to keep our ministry going. We cannot face the increased pressures without increased prayer, and we cannot live in and travel across Asia without financial resources. First Episcopal Bishop of Honduras Passes Away

T

he Rt. Rev. Hugo Luis Pina-Lopez, the assisting bishop in the Diocese of Central Florida since 2001, died Sept. 20 at the age of 79.

Born in La Gloria in Camaguey, Cuba, Bishop Hugo was a graduate of La Progressiva School and Union Theological Seminary and later fled the country because of religious persecution. From there, he went to Spain and then Honduras, where he founded numerous missions, as well as El Hoger, a home for orphaned boys.

In 1978, Bishop Hugo was consecrated as the first Bishop of Honduras. Seven Episcopal churches existed at that time, and he grew the denomination to 26 churches by the time he finished his ministry there.

“What a legacy he left the people of Honduras. Bishop Hugo’s evangelism combined with his faith, obedience and loyalty are the hallmarks of an unmatchable life of ministry,” said Bishop Greg Brewer of the Episcopal Diocese of Central Florida.

Bishop Hugo served in Texas, Oklahoma, and Florida from 1984 until his death. During his time in Central Florida, Bishop Hugo was instrumental in reinvigorating the Episcopal Hispanic churches.

“I followed Hugo as Bishop of Honduras after his resignation, but he was also my rector at St. Simon’s, Miami, before he went to Tegucigalpa, Honduras, as an appointee missionary priest,” says The Rt. Rev. Leopold Frade, former Bishop, Episcopal Diocese of Honduras, and the third Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Southeast Florida. “He was certainly a faithful man of God and planted a real missionary church that allowed Bishop (Lloyd) Allen and me to grow the Diocese of Honduras.”

In June of this year, Bishop Hugo, despite his failing health, was honored at a service at St. Matthew’s Church in Orlando for his 40 years devoted to serving the Lord.

Bishop Hugo is survived by his wife, Minerva; daughters Elizabeth and Jennifer; and son, Hugo. More than 250 people attended his memorial service.
