Looking Back— and Forward

A

s we look forward to Holy Week, let us first look back to our Diocesan Convention and the wonderful things God did there, then to the ministry that lies ahead.

Diocesan Convention 2018: Unified My experience of our recent Diocesan Convention was that it was actually an extraordinary display of Christian unity. It could have gone in a bunch of different ways—and it didn’t. People seemed genuinely happy to be there, and I felt profoundly supported.

Besides that, we laughed and enjoyed each other’s company; the worship was rich and prayerful; and in many ways, this Diocesan Convention was a celebration of the things God is doing in the Episcopal Diocese of Central Florida.

Task Force: Diverse One of the additional fruits of the Diocesan Convention was the announcement of the formation of a task force (which I announced during my address) headed by Canon Justin Holcomb. I want to bring together a group of people who are thoughtful, prayerful, committed to the unity of the diocese, faithful to Jesus and who express the theological diversity that exists among us around the question of same-sex marriage.

As we examine this issue and how we will respond to its various aspects, what I didn’t want was divisiveness. I think the task force will be the perfect

environment to have conversations in a smaller group among people who are committed to remain in unity in a way that will be, in the long run, profoundly helpful.

Diocesan Convention 2019: Celebratory The focus of next year’s Diocesan Convention will be the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Episcopal Diocese of Central Florida. It will be primarily celebratory, and we will be inviting bishops—any bishop who’s had any affiliation with the formation of the Diocese of Central Florida—and there will be a big dinner. And while we will have business to conduct, the real focus will be a celebration of what has happened and is happening as we think about the future. So, the entire tone will be one of real thanksgiving.

Ministry: Ongoing Our ministry, both now and in the future, is being influenced by the profound demographic shifts our area is experiencing. Most of our communities show significant population growth. Some of those coming in are retirees who are moving here from all over the country; some of those are young adults who are coming here because of job opportunities; some of those are people who are moving here from all over the world, again because of the economic opportunities; and another group consists of people who are migrating here (primarily from, but not limited to, Puerto Rico) because of the 2017 hurricane disasters.

The way I think about this is that the Episcopal Diocese of Central Florida is not just 84 churches; it’s 15 counties. This means we have a responsibility to minister to the people who are moving here from other parts of the country and other parts of the world. What is God asking us to do about that?

Sometimes it looks like ministry specifically to people who are migrating here who have lost everything, and so we make available food pantries and job opportunities, English as a Second Language classes, and other efforts to reach out and incorporate people who are com-

ing here. Sometimes it means thinking carefully about how we welcome new people into our congregations, regardless of who they are, and what kind of impact are we having in our local community. Sometimes it means Bishop Greg Brewer planting new churches, especially in parts of the diocese that are, right now, poorly served.

In all, we need to think both prayerfully and creatively about the populations who are coming our way, regardless of what they look like.

Future: Bright and Challenging I love what’s happening in the Diocese of Central Florida. We’re growing, we’re changing, and in ways that are calling us to take more seriously how we reach out to our neighborhoods. We’re having a number of people being ordained and being brought into the life of the church here.

In other words, we have extraordinary opportunities in front of us, and we have a lot of congregations who are trying to think about how to take advantage of those opportunities, as well as an excellent diocesan staff, who enjoy each other’s company and work hard together around these same priorities. For us, the future is both bright as well as challenging, and I’m looking forward to it.

piscopal churches across Central Florida will stay busy from Lent through Easter, holding a number of services as Christians reflect on Jesus’ sojourn in the wilderness and His crucifixion and resurrection.

The 2018 Lent season begins Wednesday, Feb. 14, with Ash Wednesday,

and ends Saturday, March 31, with Holy Saturday. Holy Week runs

Sunday, March 25, to Saturday, March 31, which includes Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. Easter Sunday and the Easter season commence on April 1.

• Easter Vigil, March 31, 8 p.m. – Following sunset, the Paschal Candle will be lit and the first celebration of Easter will be celebrated in the church.

• Easter Day, April 1, 8 and 10:15 a.m. – The adult and junior choirs will sing, and the EYC will host an Easter egg hunt for the children after the 10:15 service. We will have a cake and punch reception in the courtyard of the memorial garden.

• Thursday, March 29, 7 p.m. – Maundy Thursday: The word “Maundy” comes from the Latin word “mandatum,” meaning “commandment.” Maundy refers to the commands Jesus gave His disciples at the Last Supper: to love with humility by serving one another and to remember His sacrifice.

VERO BEACH – Helping those in need, especially our neighbors, is something the Episcopal Diocese of Central Florida is making a point of mission focus in 2018.

W

hether it’s compiling thousands of pounds of food for emergency relief, helping feed the homeless or cleaning up distressed communities, embracing neighbors is now an official mission for many.

The 49th Annual Diocesan Convention theme of “Evangelism – Embracing Our Neighborhoods” resonated throughout this year’s two-day event at Trinity Episcopal Church in Vero Beach. From the lively sermon by the Rev. Michael Michie to the festive Friday Night Dinner to Bishop Greg Brewer’s encouraging address, the annual convention on Jan. 26-27 personified the importance of “doing unto others.”

“The tireless efforts of the amazing team of volunteers from Trinity Vero, led by Mrs. Kathy Rodriguez, along with our diocesan staff and volunteers made this convention a true joy,” said Diocesan Canon to the Ordinary Tim Nunez. “Dozens of people have remarked that it was the best convention of any sort they had experienced.

“Many remarked that they loved being in a sanctuary this year,” Nunez said. “All of that enabled people to receive the content – Father Mike Michie’s sermon, Bishop Brewer’s address, our speakers and the worship music – and make important decisions in the grace of the Holy Spirit.”

Father Christopher Rodriguez, the rector at Trinity Episcopal, said an estimated 650 people attended the event, which was graced by two days of cool weather sprinkled with sunshine. “It was a wonderful oppor-

tunity for Trinity to serve the diocese, and it was an encouragement for my people,” Rodriguez said.

“They loved it!”

More than 600 people turned out for the 2018 Diocesan Convention in Vero Beach.

The convention began on Jan. 26 with a joyful celebration of Holy Eucharist, officiated by Brewer, and a sermon by Michie, and was capped by a Friday Night Dinner that served 325 people, according to Chef Robin Ryan, the owner of A Chef’s Touch Catering Service in Port St. John.

Menu items were local fare, further embracing the message of this year’s convention. Diners enjoyed a diverse buffet that included local fresh fish stuffed with crab, lobster and shrimp, roasted chicken breast, herb-roasted potatoes, saffron rice, honey-glazed fresh baby carrots, cannoli and more.

“It was fabulous,” Ryan said. “Everyone was really happy.”

The bishop’s address in the early part of the second and final day proved uplifting and memorable. Brewer talked about the 250,000 pounds of emergency FEMA relief channeled through St. John’s in Kissimmee, the 31 ordinations in 2017, outreach, new church plants, the increase in youth ministries, a prayer for discernment to better address issues with the LGBTQ community, and a need to plan for the future.

“Bishop Brewer has been working relentlessly these past six years strengthening relationships, becoming

even more deeply a diocesan family, which is the first goal of our strategic plan,” Nunez said. “We see that manifested in the many ministries he highlighted as well as in his insistence that we engage divisive issues in comprehensive conversation rather than in returning to rancorous debate as the primary means of engaging each other. He is actively bearing this same message to the House of Bishops and the Anglican Communion. It seems to have been very thankfully received and it inspired the convention.”

The positivity of the bishop’s address rolled over to the election results, which yielded a talented array of winners. In the Standing Committee, clerical order, the Rev. Christopher Rodriguez and the Rev. Gary Jackson were elected; and Dr. Lorraine Harris, lay order. In the Diocesan Board, clerical order, the Rev. Scott Holcombe, the Rev. Jason Murbarger, and the Very Rev. David Bumsted were elected; and Genevieve “Jenny” Brathwaite, Susan Shannon, Carolyn Burhans, and Karen Beasley, lay order. Parker Bauer was elected to serve as trustee for University of the South, lay order.

Concerning appointments and ratifications, appointed to the Commission on Ministry, clerical order, were the Very Rev. Dr. Reggie Kidd, the Rev. Michael Matheny, the Rev. David Newhart, the Rev. Michelle Roach, the Rev. Cameron MacMillan, and the Rev. Adam Young; and Genevieve “Jenny” Brathwaite, and Maggie Thompson, lay order.

Appointed to the Disciplinary Board, clerical order, were the Rev. Dr. Edward Weiss, and the Rev. John Kelly; and Monica Taffinder and Beth Young, to the lay order.

Uniting for Relief

This past year, diocesan outreach efforts have included food distribution (including 250,000 pounds of emergency FEMA relief channeled through St. John’s, Kissimmee); food pantries; two shipments to the U.S. Virgin Islands; and financial donations sent to St. John the Divine in Houston in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, Brewer said. Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) also assisted in ministry to community and clergy during Central Florida’s own recovery from Hurricane Irma.

But an ongoing need exists, he said, with the influx of more than 250,000 transplanted Puerto Ricans displaced by Hurricane Maria. Brewer emphasized how relief work can fulfill Christ’s words, “I was hungry and you gave Me food. … I was naked and you clothed Me.”

The Episcopal Diocese of Central Florida also saw 31 ordinations in 2017, including more young adults and women than in the past, said Brewer, who also emphasized the group’s racial diversity. The diocese has students at various seminaries, its Timothy Fund providing financial help for aspiring priests. The Institute for Christian Studies (ICS) continues to improve vocational training for deacons

and make it more accessible through online classes.

Moving in Missions

Brewer also highlighted God’s work in reaching diocesan neighborhoods via food distribution and other relief, numerous new and creative services, ministry to the LGBQT community, and countless other mission efforts. He stressed the need to examine whether these ministries move people to faith in Jesus Christ, reiterating the Great Commission’s call to “go and make disciples of all nations.”

In that light, Brewer said, new church plants are beginning or planned for Lake Nona, Horizon West and The Villages.

The Fresh Expressions movement, with its emphasis on new forms of church, is also growing. In areas where the population is declining, however, some congregations may close.

Reaching the Youth

On a positive note, diocesan youth ministries, Brewer said, increased in number this past year from 46 to 68, thanks especially to a partnership with the Youth Ministry Institute (YMI), where Kirsten Knox has replaced Steve Schneebeger as regional director. The Rev. Bill Yates will serve as Camp Wingmann’s interim director, with J.J. Joseph on board to oversee summer camps. Brewer has also worked to strengthen relationships with Episcopal schools, especially Holy Trinity Academy in Melbourne and Trinity Prep in Winter Park. Praying for Discernment

Next, Brewer emphasized his need for counsel and prayer as he seeks God’s missionary strategy for the diocese. Three ministry areas, he said, require special guidance: church plants and existing churches, the exploding Hispanic population, and the growing gay population.

Because of a lack of unity, the third area offers a special challenge, Brewer said.

His charge as a bishop means his decisions must be coherent with the “faith of the apostles,” take into consideration any action’s impact on the “faith, unity and discipline of the church,” and be coherent with his global leadership responsibility.

For these reasons, and after obtaining wise counsel, Brewer chose not to bring two proposed resolutions on LGBQT issues, including same-sex marriage, to the convention floor. Emphasizing his desire to avoid divisiveness, he announced plans for a theologically diverse task force to address these concerns. Chaired

Guest Preacher Implores Diocese to Look Forward, Not Back VERO BEACH – The Rev. Michie’s sermon, ‘There’s room for everybody in the station wagon,’ resonates at convention

T

he Rev. Mike Michie admits he was a disobedient child at times while vacationing years ago with his parents. The third of four children, he liked having his own personal space and creating his own personal boundaries.

So, Michie would climb into the back and sit in the rear-facing seat of the family’s 1975 Chrysler Town and Country station wagon while en route from Charlotte, North Carolina, to his grandmother’s home in Caruthersville, Missouri.

“These trips, let me tell you, were a battle … a battle for justice, territory and for personal rights,” Michie recalled in his sermon at the 2018 Diocesan Convention at Trinity Episcopal in Vero Beach.

“I would pray that my mom would banish me to the back. I could sit alone and look back at where we’ve been. I literally had my back to my brothers and sisters.”

Michie’s mother had the perfect response, a reply that ended up being Michie’s theme for his sermon: “There’s room in the station wagon for everybody.”

“Are you or your church like me sitting in that station wagon?” Michie asked the packed congregation. “Existing only for yourself, and only trying to protect yourself and your sense of space? Or even worse, were you like me in the back – with your back to your brothers and sisters and looking at where you’ve been and not where you’re going? She (my mother) wanted me to get unstuck from my selfish ways.”

Using his mother’s words, Michie hammered home the message of looking forward, and not backward, time and again. Cleverly segueing from his own thoughts of personal image to church planting to the apostle Paul’s conversion, Michie’s message of, “There’s room in the station wagon for everybody,” tied in perfectly with the convention’s theme of ‘Evangelism – Embracing Our Neighborhoods’ in the sense that Episcopalians need to be thinking outwardly, and not inwardly, in their lives.

“Your mission field does not need one more external show of your religiosity,” Michie said. “What they need is a show of your eternal conversion to the Lord Jesus Christ.”

Parishioners can show their eternal conversion to Christ by submitting to Him and trusting in Him, Michie said. Using the Scripture in which Jesus implores Saul to stop “kicking against the goads” (in biblical times, this was a reference to how farmers would

use a sharp stick or goad to move oxen, and if the oxen resisted, the goad would drive into the oxen’s flesh even deeper), Michie asked congregants: “Is Jesus the Lord of our neighborhood? If he is, then you can trust him. If you submit to his yoke, he will show you the way.”

To that end, Michie implored clergy and parishioners to not just start new churches, but open new churches.

He mentioned the Rev. Nick Braunschneider as an example, of how the young priest is working on his new church plant – Bethesda Church – in the Lake Nona area of Orlando, despite having “no building, no history or no people” to start with.

Michie then asked congregants how would they embrace their neighborhoods. He used the example of the conversion of Paul and how he became stuck in his ways, but then his incredible experience of seeing this powerful vision on the way to Damascus – a higher power that helped him become unstuck and move forward – changed his ways. “(Paul) sees a light from heaven brighter than the sun,” Michie said. “He gets literally knocked off his high horse.”

Michie capped his sermon by imploring parishioners to make an “indelible change, a new way of living. It’s the indelible decision to live and act and minister no longer for yourself, but for your mission field. Your church does not exist for the people who are in it, but for the people who are not there yet.

“No turning back,” Michie said. “The metaphorical Town and Country is gassed up and ready to go. Follow our Lord Jesus to every town and to every country that he calls you.”

U

tilizing a number of local businesses that provided a wide array of local fare, A Chef’s Touch Catering Service served a whopping 350 people at this year’s dinner at Trinity Episcopal in Vero Beach. The dinner lasted well over two hours and featured hors d’oeuvres such as crab cakes and fresh local tomato bruschetta on garlic crispy crostini; a dinner buffet that included local fresh fish stuffed with crab, lobster and shrimp; roasted chicken breast; herb-roasted potatoes; saffron rice; honey-glazed baby carrots; fresh sautéed green beans; baby greens salad with toppings; rolls; desserts such as cream puffs filled with Belgian chocolate, and cannolis; beverages; beer; and more.

“I had enough (to feed everyone),” said Chef Robin Ryan, who led a 10-person team that worked a religious convention for the first time. “It was fabulous. Everyone was really happy.

I’m getting a lot of thank you’s, kudos.”

Ryan’s emphasis on using local fare played nicely into the convention’s theme of “Evangelism – Embracing Our Neighborhoods.”

Foods came from all over Brevard County, including Titusville and Melbourne.

VERO BEACH – Relaxing music, great food and plenty of camaraderie made for a great Friday Night Dinner at the 2018 Diocesan Convention. And, diners can thank plenty of locals for that.

“I think it’s a sign of evangelism through embracing local,” said St. Gabriel’s Deacon Johnny Clark, who routinely works with Ryan in food ministry. Ryan’s leftovers from her Port St. John-based business help feed individuals at a men’s transition ministry for addiction, and the homeless after they are released from a hospital stay, as well as Clark’s No One Hungry program in Brevard. “We embrace the people; we embrace our neighbors. We are embracing our own local product.”

Ryan, a graduate of the Maritime Union Culinary Arts School in San Francisco and chef for more than 20 years, said there was a decided favorite at the convention.

“The stuffed cod, which is a local stuffed cod,” she said. “They loved that seafood dish. The cannolis are always great. So, I think everyone liked everything. They were very appreciative, a lovely group.”

Ryan’s team worked relentlessly for hours to ensure the dinner was a success. She said she made 250 pounds of chicken, 900 crab cakes, 150 pounds of potatoes, and 25 pounds of salad, with fresh goat cheese coming from a local goat farm.

“I had plenty,” she said. “I always take extra, because I always like to donate food.”

Ryan said the emphasis on local fare is always important to her. “The big box stores have taken over. The little guy is going away, so you have to embrace,” she said.

Food has become a key player in religion, as hospitality is now the No. 1 way to evangelize in the 21st century, according to Steve Childers of Reformed Theological Seminary. Clark echoed that belief.

“A couple of things about food,” Clark said. “One, in particular, I grew up with is hunger. Hunger sees no religion. It sees no geographic boundaries.

politics or religion or race or agenda. It’s a common thing we all can get around and be comfortable with.

“Christ had dinner at many people’s homes,” Clark said. “Food was always the common place. Food for (the) body was the reason for parallel to food for the soul.”

Clark said he was impressed with Ryan’s efforts to bring food to the table and unite others in the name of Christ.

“She has a passion for what she does,” he said. “Serving people is in her heart. It’s a business for her, but then it’s part of her passion. As a retired chef, I understand that passion.”

The Squires Share a Heart for Haiti

Couple reveals passion for Caribbean nation at Clergy Spouse Luncheon

VERO BEACH – Bill and Margaret Squire’s adventurous life has included homes in 14 states and three countries as well as 31 moves. On Saturday, Jan. 27, the Clergy Spouse Luncheon at the 2018 Diocesan Convention, hosted by Laura Lee Brewer, wife of Bishop Greg Brewer, gave Margaret the opportunity to share not only her stories, but also her heart.

God’s Call

Since their seminary days at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, Bill and Margaret believed God would use them in missions, she explained. But God’s timeline was different than theirs. Their ministry eventually took them to the Diocese of East Tennessee, where Bill served as Canon to the Ordinary and Margaret had an art studio. Sent to Haiti so Bill could discuss a potential diocesan partnership, their last night in-country brought revelation: God was calling them to serve there.

Commissioned at St. John’s Cathedral in Knoxville, Tennessee, the new mission volunteers were soon on their way to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, where Bill would serve as coordinator of the partnership program and lead two small English-speaking congregations. Margaret taught art at Holy Trinity School and eventually served on the board of the Musée d’Art.

‘Nothing Else Matters’

God used ordinary life-lessons to change both Margaret and the peo-

ple she encountered. Every day she walked the few blocks to Holy Trinity, passing a homeless woman on the way. Margaret often slipped money into the woman’s hand, but admits, “I felt superior to her.”

Before long, the Holy Spirit spoke: “Tomorrow, look her in the eye. Touch her.”

“Inside, I was saying, ‘No, no, no,’” Margaret says. “But I did it. I held her hand and told her, ‘God loves you.’

That changed me. It informed me how my ministry was to go.”

And personal engagement has marked her continuing work in Haiti. Margaret recalls many other walks to school during their time there, a season of unrest. “But I was never afraid,” she explains. “When you fulfill what you consider a call from God, nothing else matters.”

A team of street merchants “saw to my safety,” Margaret says. She bought bananas from one almost every day, giving most away to street urchins.

“One day,” she adds, “[The banana seller] put in a few extra bananas. She couldn’t give them away—but I could.”

‘If You Can Imagine It, You Can Do It’ Although Bill and Margaret returned to the U.S. after three years, Haiti remained in their hearts. In 2005, they again served in Port-au-Prince to help with an emergency need. Bill became the director of St. Vincent’s Home for Children. The mantra of the home’s founder flowed throughout the ministry: “If you can imagine it, you can do it.” In fact, Margaret says, if you Google “Haitian one-armed trumpet player,” you’ll see and hear one of their former residents.

She also introduced luncheon guests to one of her students with whom she was reunited at the Diocesan Convention – Wesny Dubic. Wes grew up in Haiti, is a member of the Cathedral in Orlando and currently serves as the chair of the diocesan Honduras Commission.

Their St. Vincent’s season ended, Bill and Margaret returned to Tennessee before their 2006 move to Florida. And then – the earthquake. The massive blast that struck Haiti in 2010 killed an estimated 300,000 nationals, including some of the St. Vincent’s staff. The children, spared from death, were now housed in a tent city. Within a few days, Bill left for Haiti with $10,000 in donations.

Margaret Squire spoke of the many travels she and her husband, Bill, have made in their evangelistic missions.

‘There Is Hope’ Since then, the Squires have made multiple trips to Haiti, often with mission groups. Their current congregation, St. George’s in The Villages, has begun a feeding program there.

In post-earthquake Haiti, “Life is still different,” Margaret says, “but there is hope.” The work of rebuilding continues. St. Vincent’s has moved to a new location, away from Port-au-Prince.

And even today, “When I need spiritual help and guidance, when I need my spirit renewed, I think of the people of Haiti,” Margaret says. “They share out of their poverty – we share out of our abundance.”

Brewer also spoke with fondness of his friendship with Bishop Lloyd Allen of Central Florida’s partner diocese in Honduras, who is unable to leave his country due to political unrest. Requesting prayer for Allen and his people, Brewer noted that nearly all the bishops in Province 9 (Central/South America) remain opposed to the passage of gay marriage liturgies.

Genuine inclusion, Brewer said, has been thwarted by the denomination’s commitment to majority rule and would be more adequately reflected by acknowledging differences in theology, geography, and culture and moving toward a consensus. Working the political system, he said, “doesn’t look like the church of the New Testament to me.” Instead, Brewer charged attendees to embrace their neighborhoods with prayer, wise counsel and genuine inclusion, acknowledging, “Our help is in the name of the Lord, maker of heaven and earth.”

“We are here to serve together,” Brewer said. “Let’s do it.”

A Homecoming for Dr. Katherine Cobb Former Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy trustee takes over as school president

F

or 60 years, Holy Trinity has focused on educating and nourishing the whole child – mind, body and spirit – in the Episcopal tradition. Dr. Katherine Cobb, the first president of Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy in Melbourne, plans to continue that practice.

A former provost and associate vice president for Eastern Florida State College (formerly Brevard Community College), Cobb officially was named Holy Trinity’s president on April 17, 2017, by the school’s Board of Trustees, according to a report in the Space Coast Daily. She was officially installed as president on Nov. 15, 2017, at the Scott Center, Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy Upper School campus. Bishop Gregory Brewer officiated and preached at the installation service.

The installment as president served as a homecoming of sorts for Cobb.

She worked in a variety of positions

for Eastern Florida State College and also served three stints as a member of Holy Trinity’s Board of Trustees: 1989-93, 2003-09 and 2012-14. The former lawyer takes over for Holy Trinity headmaster James Landi as the school transitions to a new principal model of leadership.

“Our vision is to have our students master core academic content while learning to work collaboratively with skills necessary to succeed in a global workforce,” said Cobb, who graduated from Stetson University in DeLand and later received her Juris Doctor from Stetson College of Law. “However, most importantly, we also keep in mind our students need to be well-balanced – to play sports, to play instruments, take drama and art and, of course, to have the time to simply be children.

the need arises,” Cobb said.

In her new role, Cobb will provide direction and oversight for 145 full- and part-time faculty and staff, and 850 students at two campuses. “We plan to expand and improve our physical facilities in the next three to five years so that we can meet the needs of our growing student population,” she said.

“We are also adding new programs, enrichments and offerings such as a new drone racing team, an IDEAS Center, and we will be incorporating ‘microterms’ into our schedule,” Cobb said. “These one-week, one-quarter credit terms offered over school breaks and in the summer will allow students to explore subjects they do not necessarily have time to study during the normal semesters.”

Cobb’s progressive thinking can be traced to her familiarity with the school. She has been part of the Holy Trinity community for more than 20 years. “My son, Alex, and my daughter, Ali, both began in Holy Trinity’s early childhood program, and they graduated in 2006 and 2011, respectively,” Dr. Cobb said.

She and her husband, Mark, were active volunteers. “I’ve been the soccer

coach, a homeroom mom, and anything else they could think of!” Dr. Cobb said. “I feel so blessed to have been called ‘back home’ to serve this school that I have loved for so many years.”

In addition to a great career, education and accolades, Cobb can add breast cancer survivor to her list of accomplishments. “As a cancer survivor, I have learned not to take life for granted, and I strive daily to discern God’s will for my life,” she said. “God protected me from what could have been serious consequences of cancer in order to prepare me for living a life to glorify Him.” On the day of her installation as president of Holy Trinity, Cobb’s dear friend, the Rev. Joy Willard-Williford, whispered something very impactful to her: “‘God has chosen you to be in this place at this time for his purpose,’” Cobb recalled. “As I pondered what she said, I was so very confident that being able to lead Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy was God’s plan for me from the beginning. As a parent, a volunteer and a trustee for the school, I knew and loved the school.

Being able to take on this new role was a dream come true.”

J

.J. Joseph always has loved connecting with people. Whether it has been as a high school basketball player, camp counselor or working as an insurance adjuster, Joseph enjoys meeting others and accomplishing things.

Joseph, 30, will get plenty of opportunity to utilize his people skills after accepting a position as summer camp director at Camp Wingmann in Avon Park. A part-time employee who will live with his wife, Angela, and 1 ½-year-old son, Isaiah, on-site at Wingmann, he will be part of a two-man operational team at the popular youth retreat.

The Rev. Bill Yates, who worked for 16 years as the director at Camp Wingmann before stepping down in 2014, hired Joseph as one of his first managerial decisions upon returning to the camp as interim director.

Joseph is a former Wingmann camper and counselor.

“We want to connect with schools, we want to connect with day care, we want to connect with after-care programs, we want to account for all those things and then go to them and say: ‘What can camp offer you?’” Joseph said. “And then build relationships with them. I think that’s really going to help us.”

Joseph’s enthusiasm for Wingmann can be traced to his days when he was a camper and later a counselor under Yates. He said Wingmann personnel will continually look for ways to make the retreat better and more meaningful, including the addition of more camps and opportunities for youth gatherings.

“I think one of the obvious things is J.J. draw high schoolers back to Wingmann. The camp has had a couple high school retreat weekends cancelled recently because of low registration numbers.

“Word-of-mouth is one of the best ways to get people in,” said Joseph, who moved to Sebring when he was 3 years old and graduated from Sebring High in 2005. “We want to do a better job connecting with the current high schoolers that we have by giving them resources, and when I say resources, not necessarily pamphlets, but encourage them and motivate them. Say, ‘Hey, invite your friends and bring them here.’

“We want to do a better job connecting through social media,” Joseph said. “The things we want to do locally and connecting with the community is we’ll have a good span. And we hope that will in turn bring in some high schoolers.”

Conversely, Joseph comes into a camp that has been enormously popular for its summer camps and winter camp, as well as “New Beginnings,” a week-end camp designed for middle-schoolers.

He praised outgoing camp director the Rev. Deke Miller for the work he did during his four years in charge.

CAMP WINGMANN “I think he has accomplished a good bit,” Joseph said. “I know there’s some Catholic groups that are now utilizing the camp that were not utilizing the camp before. They have a lot of weekends booked throughout the year.

are we going to do? Then we need to start thinking about how can we expand our capacity. There’s a lot of talks about building because we have a lot of land so we can have a bigger dining hall, bigger recreation areas, things of that nature.”

“He’s really put himself out there and branched a little bit outside the Episcopal Church,” Joseph said.

“But at the end of the day, although we honor the Episcopal Church, we are a Christ camp. As long as we can spread the love of Jesus to whomever we can get our hands on, that’s what we want to do. And that’s what he has done. And I appreciate that.”

Joseph’s enthusiasm already has made a big impression on some folks, including Yates. “J.J. is such an incredible guy,” Yates said. “He is so energetic, shows enthusiasm, great ideas, works really hard, loves the Lord and is great with kids. When he was a counselor years ago, he was the best male counselor that I had.”

Joseph is familiar with working with different religious groups. He calls himself “a church mutt,” having grown up in the Church of Christ and then going to his father’s Nazarene Church before attending Faith Pentecostal in Avon Park and then My Father’s House. “My Father’s House was a nondenominational church in Sebring,” he said. “That’s where I felt like I finally extended my hand back out to God and shook His hand.”

Yates said Joseph’s responsibilities now will be completely different from his own. “J.J. is going to be running the summer camp program,” Yates said.

“That’s his total responsibility. He will be dealing with the staff. He will be dealing with the minute-to-minute working with programming and the various things that happen. He will be interacting with the counselors who are there.

“My job is that I’m basically going to be the coach,” Yates said. “I will be mostly behind the scenes, looking after things from an overall perspective. He is going to be the frontline out there. It’s sort of like I’m going to be the head coach of the football team, and he’s the quarterback. I’m really excited. It’s a new model. We haven’t tried this before. But I’m really excited. I think that somebody with his talent and with his dedication to the Lord, summer camp will be fantastic!”

He grew into his own at Camp Wingmann and then went off to Eastern Florida State College in Melbourne and earned an associate’s degree. He then went to YMI (Youth Ministry Institute) in Orlando and earned a two-year certificate in youth ministry.

Joseph currently is working toward his bachelor’s degree in youth ministry through Southwestern College’s online program.

“Now, this (position at Wingmann) is good for me because there’s a lot of connections already made,” he said.

Joseph, whose official start date was Feb. 1, 2018, also works as an insurance adjuster in the fall, a seasonal position that works perfectly with his job at Wingmann. As for the future at Wingmann, he said it’s all about how far the camp can go. He said he is not worried about the damage the camp sustained last summer during Hurricane Irma.

“We’re definitely in a place right now where we can get the camp 100 percent running the way it was before,” he said. “But that’s not even the goal because we know we can do that. What we want to do is take it even further. We want to figure out how we can expand. Get more students there.

“I believe that without a shadow of a doubt, we’re going to have a waiting list for every camp session,” Joseph said. “OK, now, when we get to that, what

Hundreds of kids will experience the thrill of high-speed tubing this summer when Camp Wingmann camps are held – thanks to a generous donation.

C

amp Wingmann interim director Father Bill Yates announced Feb. 13 that a beautiful 17-foot Malibu ski boat has been donated to the retreat in Avon Park. The boat will allow camp leaders to take four youths at a time for tubing on Trout Lake.

“It’s wonderful”, Yates said. “The kids will have a blast riding the tube this summer!”

Water activities will be one of many fun things for youth to enjoy when Camp Wingmann kicks off its summer camp season on Sunday, June 10. Camp St. Mark, which runs June 10-15, is the first

of six weeklong camps for various age groups. Registration opened March 1.

Through the years, hundreds of youth from around the Diocese of Central Florida and beyond have participated in the annual camps. The camps are so popular that many former campers return and serve as counselors once they have graduated high school and turned 18.

“We have had good turnouts for years,” Yates said. “They love the whole experience. It’s a lot of fun and games. But we also do some serious things. We spend time at the chapel. They (the campers) ask questions about God that maybe they wouldn’t be comfortable asking a parent.”

Some of the sessions traditionally push the camp to near capacity (120), especially the camps for middle schoolers. “With the middle schoolers, we will get between 85 and 90 campers,” Yates said. “Then, when you factor in 24 staff, volunteers, two clergy, myself and others, we easily go over 120. We really pack our dining hall.”

Yates said Camp Wingmann draws many returnees for spiritual reasons. “For many, it becomes a spiritual habit,” he said. “Every year, they come back. They are ready to come back and get pumped up again.

Many of them go on to be counselors, themselves.”

Camp Wingmann also sees familiar clergy. Leaders like Canon Tim Nunez, the

Rev. Brian Garrison from St. Barnabas Church in DeLand, and the Rev. Alison Harrity from St. Richard’s Episcopal Church in Winter Park – to name a few – come and serve as chaplains for one of the sessions. “The clergy really enjoy camp as they lead chapel services and get in on the fun,” Yates said.

There is also a new staff at Camp Wingmann now that Father Bill is in charge.

In addition to hiring J.J. as summer camp director, Angela Joseph, his wife, is the new bookkeeper; Robert Santana is the new maintenance man; and his wife, Leilani Santana, is the registrar. Miguel Caban continues as yardman/custodian, Vicki and Dave Colman are winter volunteers, and Joanie Yates returns as kitchen manager.

J.J., Angela, and Robert are former camp counselors returning to work at the camp they love. All of the staff are part-time employees. “We are excited about our new staff,” Father Bill said. “They all love God and enthusiastically want to be a part of the Camp Wingmann team!”

Middle Schoolers Find Christ Through ‘New Beginnings’ Popular retreat continues to draw hundreds to Camp Wingmann

B

ringing middle schoolers to Christ is a fun thing for staff members at Camp Wingmann. It’s all about “New Beginnings” through an array of activities, food, prayer, laughter and more.

A weekend retreat established by the Diocese of Central Florida more than 30 years ago, New Beginnings is one of the more popular events at the Avon Park camp. Designed for middle school students ages 12-15 but run by high school students and supervised by youth leaders, clergy and other adults, the retreat has helped scores of youth grow in love for themselves, for others and for Jesus.

That trend is expected to continue March 9-11 when the spring 2018 New Beginnings retreat will be held.

New Beginnings is also held once in the fall.

“We expect a great turnout of at least 100 youth and adults to be in attendance this March,” said the Rev. Phyllis Bartle, rector of St. Jude’s Episcopal Church

in Orange City and one of the event’s organizers.

Bartle said speakers and musical talent will come from adults and students from around the diocese who volunteer their time to make sure that the Lord is proclaimed and all are allowed to flourish in their faith. They also will help motivate the campers to enjoy and learn from the many activities, which include skits, music, small-group gatherings, swimming, playing and more.

The format that New Beginnings has used has been noticed and utilized by others, far and wide. “The format for this middle school retreat was so popular that it spread throughout the United States and even to Ireland,” Bartle said. “It is based and grounded in ‘relationship.’ Relationship with self, peers, siblings, parents, Jesus and the world. The youth explore different aspects of those relationships and begin to grow in each of them.”

The uniqueness of Camp Wingmann has helped New Beginnings as well. The huge retreat center in northern Highlands County has an old-time Florida feel that enamors visitors time and again.

“New Beginnings has become a favorite weekend retreat for many students because it allows them to experience the love of God in the pristine setting of Camp Wingmann,” Bartle said. “They make lifelong friendships with those who come from all over the diocese.

“The teens are allowed and encouraged to come to the weekend again and again to the point that many go on to become leaders themselves and serve as small-group leaders, prayer team members and in many other roles,” Bartle said.

Former Wingmann Director Returns to Popular Retreat

W

hen Camp Wingmann lost its director last fall, Diocese of Central Florida officials turned to a familiar face to run its popular retreat.

The Rev. Bill Yates, who, along with his wife, Joanie, helped revive the camp in 1998, has returned as camp director, albeit in a different fashion. He

will serve as interim camp director in a part-time role, replacing the Rev. Deke Miller, who left to become vicar of Holy Cross Church in Winter Haven.

Yates, who has served the last 3 ½ years as vicar at Church of the Redeemer in Avon Park, said it has been a seamless transition replacing Miller and returning to his former stomping grounds.

“He’s been really great,” Father Bill said of Miller. “We’ve spent a lot of time together working things out. I don’t think it could have been any better. The fact that I was there for 16 years makes it real easy, just catching up with what’s happening the last three or four years.”

Father Bill came to Wingmann in 1998 when three camp alumni purchased the property with the vision of returning the retreat to its former glory. Camp Wingmann hosted its first retreat in 1928 and ran successfully for 50 years until the diocese sold the property in 1978. The property changed hands several times before it was repurchased in 1998 by former Wingmann campers.

bring it back from what at that time was in pretty dismal shape,” Father Bill said.

“It had been defunct for a long time.”

Father Yates takes over a camp that currently can take 120 youths or adults at a time, a number that is based on its dining room capacity. Wingmann’s summer camps are enormously popular, and winter camp also has been a big draw. Equally as popular are Wingmann’s New Beginnings weekend camps, which are designed for middle-schoolers.

With the Yateses back in the fold, Wingmann is sure to keep drawing big turnouts for its camps. Father Bill said his wife, Joanie, has swag all on her own.

“In camp, she is called ‘Mama Joanie’ because she has been a camp cook for a long time now,” Father Bill said. “Her gift is hospitality and looking after people, caring for people. The kids pick up on that.”

Hospitality is everywhere at Camp Wingmann. Father Deke Miller led a clean-up of the camp after Hurricane Irma, an effort that involved 80 volunteers and a big team of professionals sent from Lake Wales by the Rev. John Motis. All worked hard in removing downed trees and picking up the entire campus.

“They got it all cleaned up so that the camp looks really good,” Father Bill said. “We still have two buildings that need repair. office and Retreat House. The roofer is coming in March to fix that one.

“The other building was our lakefront building where we lost honestly, about one-third of the building,” Father Bill said. “I’ve gotten some volunteers lined up. In the next few months, we are going to be rebuilding it.”

Although the camp has fundraisers to help defray expenses, Father Bill said donations are the lifeblood of Wingmann: “We had a good insurance settlement. It has pretty much covered the damages that we have had. We are feeling good about that. What we also need is continual donations for operating funds. That’s been something from the very beginning. Being a ministry to kids, we can’t charge enough to pay for year-round upkeep and staff.

So, we have a number of people for years and churches who have donated on a regular basis, a larger number, but we also could use more.”

Looking ahead, Father Bill said he is hoping to increase the visibility of Camp Wingmann and attract more youth to camps. “Our goal has always been for kids to come there, have a great time and get to know Jesus in a personal way, and get to grow in their faith,” he said. “That’s been our founding philosophy from the very

In the next year, we’re going to be in a lot more social media of all various kinds, being a lot more out there, being a lot more in contact with people, just raising awareness of the camp.”

One of Father Bill’s first moves since returning as camp director was hiring a summer camp director: J.J. Joseph, a former Wingmann camper and counselor. Like Father Bill, Joseph will work in a part-time capacity.

“We are just trying to find the Holy Spirit in this,” Father Bill said. “We’re going where the Lord leads us. This seems to the direction to go right now. J.J. is such an incredible guy. He is so energetic, shows enthusiasm, great ideas, works really hard, loves the Lord and is great with kids.”

A

ski boat, tubing activities and a summer camp director will not be the only new things this summer at Camp Wingmann. Youths also will get the chance to pray and reflect before a new altar.

Former Camp Wingmann director Deke Miller announced last year that the Brotherhood of St. Andrew presented a new altar for the spacious retreat in Avon Park. The multipurpose altar was officially dedicated and christened last July by Bishop Greg Brewer. But this marks the first summer that the altar will be used throughout all six camp sessions.

“The altar is now being used as a portable altar, allowing it to be utilized in the hall, as well as outside,” said Father Ed Bartle, an associate rector at St. George’s Episcopal Church in The Villages and the Diocesan Coordinator for the Brotherhood of St. Andrew.

The chapel, which was constructed by the Brotherhood of St. Andrew chapter in Dunnellon, is made of Southern yellow pine and took approximately two months to build, according to

spokesman Skip Simpson. Cost of the materials was $250.

“The pine was factory-weather sealed and then resealed at completion,” Simpson said.

Bartle said the idea for the new altar came at a meeting of chaplains in February of 2017 at Camp Wingmann. The chaplains presented the idea to Miller.

“The camp director at that time wanted to form an outside chapel,” Bartle said of Miller. “He wanted it to be in the natural environment. We asked Deke and he said he would love to have this outdoor chapel. So, the brothers in the Dunnellon chapter said they would take care of it.”

Bartle said Bishop Brewer loved the new altar: “He went out and blessed it. I think he was thrilled with it.”

The new altar has been such a big success that Bartle said expansion is being planned. “We’re hoping to continue to build that chapel area out there now. Put in some natural seating. It’s just out in the area,” he said.

Our Saviour Parishioners Offer Mentorship to Girls in Need Deacon Mueller part of team ministering at Okeechobee facility

A

t the Okeechobee Girls Academy, all girls matter.

Officials at the residential facility under the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice employ gender-responsive services using a Girls Matter curriculum. Residents receive treatment for a variety of issues, including sexual abuse, substance abuse, domestic violence, trauma and crime-specific topics.

But it may be cookie decorating, game time, arts and crafts, and music that Steadfast Ministries workers provide that are making real change in residents’ lives. A small group of people from Church of Our Saviour in Okeechobee can attest to that.

“Our goal is to share Christ, His love, His forgiveness and His healing with each and every resident,” Mueller said.

“We want them to be confident in knowing they are never alone, that His presence and His peace is always with them!”

Mueller and five other certified parishioners from Church of Our Saviour have teamed with three members from a local United Methodist Church to mentor girls ages 13-18 at Okeechobee Girls Academy. “Mentors are matched one-to-one with a young woman (mentee) for the duration of her stay at OGA,” Mueller said. “Mentors offer a source of friendship, encouragement and guidance to their mentee. During their visit, the mentor and mentee can

play approved games, have devotionals, do arts and crafts or just talk.

“Additionally, we offer a Bible study once a month, and there will be periodic visits to Church of Our Saviour for Sunday services planned at the discretion of the OGA facility administrator,” Mueller said.

Steadfast Ministries encourages four contacts per month – at least two in-person and two by mail, Mueller said. “Of course, if mentors want to visit more frequently, it is a blessing for the girls,” Mueller said. “Currently, we offer a one-hour Bible study for all 32 residents once a month. Additionally, one-on-one mentoring sessions are held three times a month.

“We also sponsor special scheduled events for all residents such as cookie decorating, game time, arts and crafts, music, etc., and continue to brainstorm activities that would appeal to the entire group,” Mueller said.

A veteran of various ministries over the last 10 years, Church of Our Saviour Deacon Kay Mueller and several parishioners last October partnered with Steadfast Ministries – a ministry to incarcerated youth based out of Lutz in the Tampa Bay area – to minister to the needs of Okeechobee Girls Academy residents in a long-term capacity.

Several Our Saviour parishioners completed the required training, application process and background screening for clearance and held their first official meeting with the girls at Okeechobee Girls Academy on Oct. 28, 2017, in a “meet-and-greet” format, Mueller said.

sometimes lasting up to two hours.

The response has been heartwarming for mentors.

“With each visit, we always receive a very warm welcome, but we are also feeling a deeper trust and a heightened anticipation of, ‘When will you be back!’” Mueller said. “During Christmas, we personally delivered gift bags to each of the girls containing an array of toiletries, socks, candy and books made possible by the generosity of our parishioners at Church of Our Saviour.

“The girls’ appreciation and excitement were overwhelming,” Mueller said. “One young lady asked me if she could pray. We formed a circle, holding hands, and the depth of love and spirit present in her prayer brought me to tears. It was a precious gift of intercession to hear that bore witness to the love of Christ within her.”

Church of Our Saviour’s involvement with Steadfast Ministries and Okeechobee Girls Academy is a prime example of Bishop Greg Brewer’s message of “Evangelism – Embracing Our Neighborhoods” that was delivered at the recent 2018 Diocesan Convention in Vero Beach. But Mueller said the outreach ministry for Okeechobee Girls Academy can actually be tied to the bishop’s address three years earlier:

“Amidst the leadership of our rector, Father Jim Shevlin, we are collectively identifying, developing and implementing ministries to share the good news of Christ Jesus and serve the needs of our community,” Mueller said.

“As our bishop shared in his convention address in 2015: ‘The prime purpose of the local church is not pastoral care. It is worship and a pattern of discipleship and pastoral care that sends people into mission. That’s the litmus test. It’s not about how many people fill the pews. It’s what happens outside the pews in a way that actually makes a substantive difference in the life of your community.’

Mueller, however, admitted that ministering at facilities like Okeechobee Girls Academy is not for everyone. She and fellow mentors shared the ministry opportunity with Church of Our Saviour’s congregants and welcomed all to participate. Although only six have completed the certification process, another one is currently in process, and one other is seeking guidance through interaction and prayer.

“Due to the varying circumstances resulting in the girls’ residency at Okeechobee Girls Academy, this is not a ministry for everyone,” Mueller said. “It is critical that each mentor be committed to providing consistency and continuity, as well as caution, constraint and compassion in listening, consoling and responding.”

The efforts of the mentors, however, have borne fruit. The ministry at the facility is showing some residents the path to Christ.

“The program is still in its infancy stages at Okeechobee Girls Academy, but we have already had wonderful opportunities to minister to the girls through fun activities, prayer and church ser-

vices,” Mueller said. “During a recent visit to Church of Our Saviour by Bishop and Mrs. Brewer, eight of the girls, accompanied by two chaperones, attended our Rite II service and shared lunch with us.

“These young women are seeing beautiful examples of the love of Christ through the amazing volunteers who have followed the call to be the hands and feet of Jesus in this world,” Mueller said. “I have no doubt that God is at work in this place and in the hearts of these young women.”

Please briefly summarize what churches you have served at, and in what capacity (title, committees): Having grown up in the diocese and lived in different areas of the greater Orlando area, I have attended and served at multiple churches within the diocese. Youth minister: Holy Spirit, Apopka; Resurrection, Longwood; Incarnation, Oviedo; St. Peter’s, Lake Mary. I’ve volunteered on the worship teams at Resurrection, Incarnation and St. Peter’s. I have also been involved in youth ministry on the diocesan level, helping with Happenings, Soul in the City, G.Y.C. (Great Youth Celebration), Youth Quake, etc., and especially serving as one of the weekend advisers for New Beginnings

When did you feel a call from God to become a transitional deacon, and how have you responded (schooling, etc.)?

I was serving as the worship team leader for a New Beginnings weekend a few years ago when I felt a call to ordained ministry.

This was an appropriate setting, since it was at my first New Beginnings weekend when I was in seventh grade that I first truly listened to the words of the Nicene Creed and began to understand that the stories I had been taught in Sunday school were more than just individual episodes. I realized (that) come together (it was) making a greater story of which we all are a part, and that God was working to have a relationship with me.

Both experiences, the first as a youth and the second years later, left me feeling humbled and, at the same time, loved.

What are your future goals, and where would you like to serve?

This is a question I have no answer for outside of, I hope to go wherever God leads me. I am a living testimony to the adage, “If you want to hear God laugh, tell Him your plans.” I would never have expected to be where I am today, and I am grateful when I look back and see how God has continually been at work in my life. I don’t think I can predict where I will be in the future, but I fully believe I will again be able to look back and see how the different paths God puts me on lead me back to Him. My hope is to be open to and aware of whatever next step He places in front of me and that I will continually have the faith required to take it.

I will serve God and his church wherever that will be.

While studying abroad in London, I had a profound experience of God’s grace and love enveloping and clothing me during a service of Evensong at Westminster Abbey.

It was at this moment I received clarity as to my vocation in life. Throughout my undergraduate studies, I strove toward being a physician for the sick and elderly; but at this moment, I realized I was called to be a physician of souls – a representative, leader and teacher for people to learn and grow in the knowledge of God’s infinite love and grace. While attending one Evensong, I remember a feeling beyond words Katie Gillett – which I can only describe as a sense of awakening and a home – that led to my desire to want to learn and worship more. During this Evensong service, I was moved to tears from the liturgy, the readings, the sermon and the music. Ultimately, all combined to a moment of clarity in which I felt in my deepest conscience a realization of what my prior life experiences were shaping to form me into the work I needed to do in the world.

After my trip to London in 2013, I spent the last year of my undergraduate work exploring my vocation personally, understanding the call I experienced and the implications of a decision to commit to full-time Christian service.

Honestly, with the Lord’s help, I hope to live into both my baptismal and ordination vows – (including, but not limited to) committing myself to the trust and responsibility of the life of ministry; respect and be guided by my bishop; be faithful in prayer and reading and studying Scripture; seek and serve Christ in all; seek not my glory but the Lord’s.

From discernment in community, divinity school, field education placements, I feel called to parish ministry and would like to serve in a parish, but, I am open to seeing how the Lord will use me in ministry and where I will be called to serve.

I serve in Lakeland. I am the director of family ministries at All Saints’ Episcopal Church.

My ministry career began in 1997 in Baltimore, where I served at Lee Street Memorial Baptist Church as church administrator and Music and Missions teacher. In 1998, I added the responsibilities of Minister of Music, social studies teacher and VBS Director. My husband and I moved to Richmond, Virginia, in 2000 so I could attend Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond as a full-time Master of Divinity student, and while there, I served Bethel Baptist Church and Second Presbyterian Church in their music ministries. I was a seminarian at Grace Baptist Church, and in 2004 I was called by Woodland Heights Baptist Church as their minister of music. In 2007, I was called to serve as associate pastor for music and worship by First Baptist Church of Ahoskie, North Carolina. In 2010, my husband was hired by Southeastern University and we relocated to Lakeland. I volunteered in worship leadership at a small Baptist church in Lakeland before being called to serve as the children’s choir and youth ensemble director at All Saints’ Church in 2013.

and I took a weekend vacation to New York, and while worshipping at St. Thomas’ Church in Manhattan, I heard the call from God to ordained ministry in the Episcopal Church.

I shared that calling with Father Al Jenkins and Father Reid Hensarling at All Saints’ upon my return and then proceeded to listen for God’s voice and embarked upon the journey as prescribed by our diocese. In December 2014, I began my full-time position as director of family ministries, which has fostered relationships that provide a loving and supportive community in which to discern and develop the calling.
