The School District Education Foundation Matching Grant Program, adopted by the Florida Legislature in 2000, is a cornerstone of the success of Florida’s local education foundations. It is an integral component of our strategy to increase private-sector interest, involvement and investment in advancing student achievement in our schools.

Current legislation specifically states that the funds “are provided as challenge grants to public school district education foundations for programs that serve low-performing students, technical career education, literacy initiatives, Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM) Education initiatives, increased teacher quality and/or increased graduation rates.

The amount of each grant shall be equal to the private contribution made to a qualifying public school district education foundation.”

Through the 2018-19 school year, the State of Florida had appropriated nearly $47 million, which has been leveraged with private-sector contributions to total nearly $102 million for eligible local projects.

School District Education Foundation Matching Grant Program Program Implementation Details

History Local education foundations came into existence with the help of Florida Commissioner of Education Betty Castor who, in 1984, came forward with legislation allowing the establishment of one direct support, nonprofit organization (DSO) to be aligned with each of Florida’s 67 county-wide public school districts. Governor Bob Martinez signed the bill into law (FSS 1001.453). Today there are 64 local education foundations served by the Consortium of Florida Education Foundations (CFEF), some structured as DSOs and others with more autonomous governance, but all dedicated to supporting students, teachers and schools in their local school district.

The CFEF maximizes the individual and collective strength of Florida local education foundations to support local partners and schools. CFEF’s member foundations serve 99% of Florida’s 2.8 million K-12 student population and are led by 1,100 business and community board members who collectively raise $64 million annually for initiatives when school budgets fall short and tax dollars will not allow. The CFEF serves as the primary link between local education foundations and regional, statewide and national partners. The CFEF leverages those relationships and creates partnerships with businesses and foundations that impact students and strengthens cooperation between the private-sector and Florida’s public schools.

Background and Program Summary The CFEF directly administers the School District Education Foundation Matching Grant Program (SDEFMG) on an annual basis, from July 1 through June 30 of each grant cycle. The SDEFMG Program is designed to increase private-sector investment in Florida’s K-12 public education. After raising funds from business, individual, civic organization and foundation contributions, each local education foundation aligned with Florida’s 67 county-wide school districts is invited to access the matching funds annually through the CFEF for the following eligible programmatic areas: literacy, support for low-performing Students, Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education, career/technical education, increasing graduation rates and teaching quality. The CFEF acts as more than a fiscal agent for the program, providing full support through dedicated staff: CFEF Director of Programs: • Oversees the implementation of the SDEFMG Program • Provides support to local education foundations in meeting the eligibility requirements for participation • Coordinates appropriate trainings to support the SDEFMG Program • Maintains online grant portal • Develops member resources, including best practices, how-to manuals and promotional materials highlighting projects for the SDEFMG

CFEF President: • Ensures all state regulations related to the SDEFMG Program are met • Works collaboratively with state education leaders to ensure that the program reflects the overall needs of Florida’s K-12 public school students and the programmatic priorities currently reflect the need • Provides ongoing outreach and support for all school districts and foundations to ensure they are positioned to engage their local businesses and community members through their local education foundation to access the matching grant each year • Provides on-site support to rural local education foundations to develop an eligible program that supports the needs of the local community CFEF Administrative Assistant & Events Coordinator: • Performs communications functions to members on key components of the SDEFMG Program • Manages contact databases • Prepares packets for meetings • Proofreads and edits material for grammatical and factual accuracy Program Proviso Language 100 SPECIAL CATEGORIES GRANTS AND AIDS - SCHOOL DISTRICT MATCHING GRANTS PROGRAM FROM GENERAL REVENUE FUND . . . . . $4,000,000 Funds in Specific Appropriation 100 are provided as challenge grants to public school district education foundations for programs that serve low-performing students, technical career education, literacy initiatives, Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM) Education initiatives, increased teacher quality and/or increased graduation rates. The amount of each grant shall be equal to the private contribution made to a qualifying public school district education foundation. In-kind contributions shall not be considered for matching purposes. Administrative costs for the program shall not exceed five percent.

Before any funds provided in Specific Appropriation 100 may be disbursed to any public school district education foundation, the public school district foundation must certify to the Commissioner of Education that the private cash has been received by the public school education foundation seeking matching funds.

The Consortium of Florida Education Foundations shall be the fiscal agent for this program.

Program Implementation/Scope of Work The administration of the SDEFMG Program is an ongoing process that includes many steps and constant oversight. The following are the detailed steps of administering the grant to all local education foundations in Florida.

Determine Allocations for All 67 County-Wide School District Local Education Foundations Once notified of appropriated amount, allocations per county is determined. Each district is eligible for a base amount of $10,000. The remaining funding is allocated based on a distribution formula using the most recent Full Time Equivalent (FTE) student count according to the Florida Department of Education (FDOE). The $10,000 base plus the FTE percentage comprises the total allocation and is offered to the districts to match dollar-for-dollar with private-sector funding.

Notify All Districts of the Opportunity to Participate In the spring, the CFEF communicates with all school districts regarding the opportunity to participate in the SDEFMG Program for the upcoming grant cycle. All local education foundations and, in the absence of a foundation, district superintendents are notified. The CFEF makes the notification in anticipation of funding to ensure that, if appropriated, counties that are interested in participating understand the necessary requirements and timeline to do so. All proposed projects must fall within one or more of the six stateassigned programmatic areas: literacy, support for low-performing students, increasing graduation rates, STEM, career/technical education and teacher quality. Should they choose to apply for a grant, a representative of that foundation and/or district must participate in an online training.

The CFEF president is available to visit districts that do not currently participate in the SDEFMG grant program, to make presentations demonstrating how to access the application and apply for funding. Those services may include consultation with the local education foundation board and/or community members to assist in planning activities that enable districts to meet participation requirements and obtain private match funds as well as technical support in establishing a 501(c)3 local education foundation for their school district as provided for by statute.

Hold Online, Webinar-Based Training Sessions for Program Participants In the summer months, six training sessions are held that provide a broad program overview as well as a step -by-step description of how to apply, the program timeline, eligibility requirements, allowable and unallowable expenses, available resources, project examples, reporting requirements and more. Each participant is provided with a copy of the training materials and a handout containing allocations, program overview, timeline, guidelines, policies and procedures, requirement check-off form, and application and final report templates.

Participating Foundations Submit Certification Forms Documenting the Dollar-for-Dollar Match If an education foundation or district chooses to participate in the program, they must submit a Certification of Cash Received form by the deadline stated in the program timeline and prior to submitting an application for funding. This is a form stating the private-sector funding has been secured to match the allocated state funding dollar-for-dollar for activities or programs that improve academic achievement in eligible areas.

When submitting applications in the CFEF online grants management platform, participants provide a list of where the matching dollars originate to ensure that the funding does come from private-sector funders.

Submit Online Grant Application All participants are required to submit their grant applications using the online grant system. Participants are provided a login and password (one per district) where they can complete their application and manage it on an on-going basis. The CFEF program coordinator monitors all website activity and handles the administrative back-end of the grant process by assigning administrative capabilities, inputting budget caps per district, reviewing any application amendments and reviewing evaluation plans of each project.

CFEF First Quarter Deliverables Due The CFEF submits project deliverables each quarter as agreed upon in the Project Performance and Accountability section of the state grant application. First Quarter Deliverables are due September 30 of the grant year and include evidence of: updated grant management portal; program materials and requirements; announcements of program availability; participant training; and Certification of Cash Received Forms received by all participating counties.

Peer Review Process Per FDOE requirements, the program coordinator implements a peer review process of each application.

Each application is initially reviewed by the program coordinator to ensure that it is complete and has a clear evaluation plan. Then it is sent out for review by a colleague from another education foundation.

Review team members MUST NOT be potential recipients of the funds and must be representative of the education foundations in the state.

The review consists of questions that ensure all applications adhere to grant guidelines by having a clear explanation of their project plan, measurable need and evaluation plan, as well as a clear timeline for implementation. Records are kept of each project review. If an application has any narrative feedback, the program coordinator forwards that information on to the applicant for their consideration. If any questions arise as to the eligibility of a project, the application will get a third review by the president of the CFEF to ensure that there is consensus on project eligibility for matching funds.

3. Does the applicant specify goals and objectives of their project activities?

4. Does the applicant describe adequate timeline for project activities to occur?

5. Does the applicant describe primary participants, those directly benefitting from project activities?

6. Does the applicant clearly specify what data sources and/or collection strategies that will be used to measure outcomes?

7. Does the applicant state baseline outcome number(s) they are trying to improve with project activities?

8. Does the applicant clearly specify what data sources and/or collection strategies that will be used to measure outputs?

9. Does the applicant state baseline output number(s) they are trying to improve with project activities?

10. Does the budget contain only allowable expenditures? (If out of state travel is suspected, please indicate below.)

Receive 60% of State Funding to Disburse to Participants In the first quarter, the CFEF receives 60% of the total appropriated amount from the state. The CFEF is allocated a 5% administration fee, and the remainder is disbursed to local education foundations for their approved projects.

Second Round Allocations Each county-wide local education foundation receives an initial allocation for the SDEFMG Program. Some counties will choose not to participate, and some will not be able to raise the full match, allowing them to accept only a portion of their allocation. The funding that is not certified by the original deadline is rolled into a Second Round allocation to all foundations that participated in the first round and indicated interest in any second round funds that may become available.

Second Round allocations are based solely on a percentage of FTE: there is no base amount applied. Each foundation must certify that they can match this Second Round amount in addition to their first round allocation. For example, if a county is allocated $12,000 in round one and offered $5,000 in the Second Round, they must document that they can match the entire $17,000 with private-sector funding.

With the addition of Second Round funding, applicants may amend their existing project budgets to reflect the additional funding and have their budgets reviewed by the CFEF, or they may apply for a new project and go through the full peer review and approval process.

CFEF Second Quarter Deliverables Due Second quarter deliverables are due December 30 of the grant year. Deliverables are specified in the Project Performance and Accountability form and include evidence of: peer review process; Second Round allocation process; professional development training to CFEF members; and CFEF audit process.

Sub-Grantee Mid-Year Reports In January of each year, program participants are required to submit a Mid-Year Report to the CFEF through the online grants management platform. The Mid-Year Report asks for the amount that has been disbursed to date, the progress being made on the approved project and the plans for remaining disbursement. This information is used to generate an expenditure report that is submitted to the FDOE as part of the CFEF’s project deliverables. Each participating foundation/district must complete the report, and the CFEF’s Shared Revenue Policy states that they must complete the form by the deadline or forego participation in the next grant cycle.

Receive 40% of State Funding to Disburse to Participants The CFEF receives the remaining 40% of state-appropriated funding in the third quarter (typically in January) and, after taking the allotted 5% administration fee, the CFEF disburses the remaining funds to all participating foundations in the amounts of the remaining allocations (minus first disbursements). At this point, all funds will have been disbursed.

CFEF Third Quarter Deliverables Due Third quarter deliverables are due March 30 of the grant year. Deliverables are specified in the Project Performance and Accountability form and include evidence of: mid-year reporting process; and professional development opportunities to CFEF members.

Annual Meeting Information At the CFEF’s Annual Membership Meeting held in June, a portion of the meeting is reserved for an overview of the SDEFMG: program highlights from the current year; discussion on best practices for the upcoming year; resources available and forms pertaining to the upcoming grant year; and presentations from members on successful projects. A portion of these activities are designed to prepare participants should the funding be available for the next grant year. The CFEF conducts these on-going activities in anticipation of funding to ensure that all participants are aware of program requirements.

Collect Sub-Grantee Final Project Reports In May of each year, program participants may begin to enter their Final Reports in the online grant portal, one report per funded project. If a member foundation has one funded project, they complete one Final Report, if they have four funded projects, they complete four Final Reports. All project reports are reviewed by the CFEF program coordinator for completeness, content and adherence to fiscal requirements. The CFEF performs a financial spot-check of ten percent of funded projects, requiring these participants to submit expenditure receipts to correspond with their stated final expenditure report. All Final Reports for funded projects are due June 30 of each year.

CFEF Fourth Quarter Deliverables Due Fourth quarter deliverables are due June 30 of the grant year as specified in the Project Performance and Accountability form and include evidence of: final reporting process; and professional development opportunities to CFEF members.

Compile Overall Program Report Once all sub-grantee final project reports have been collected, they are compiled into an overall program report that is submitted to the Florida Department of Education as proof of performance through the year.

The overall program report includes detailed information on each funded project along with statewide highlights.

Development and Maintenance of Online Grant Portal Throughout the grant cycle there are many steps that need to be completed on the administrative side of the online web portal to ensure that content stays current and reflects the priorities set forth in the proviso language. Parameters need to be manually set to ensure that all projects have budget limits and that access to modifying applications is monitored. The CFEF is alerted to all project updates through email notifications from the online system. Maintenance of the online grant portal is an on-going process throughout the year.

The Education Foundation of Alachua County Innovation Impact: Transforming Education from the Ground Up Project Summary This Innovation Impact project transformed education in Alachua County through four initiatives.

The Collaborative Classroom Initiative redesigned the classroom experience for students in two schools allowing them to work together with ease and interface with technology daily. The main goal was to create a learning environment that promoted critical thinking, cooperation, inquiry and self-reliance by renovating existing classrooms with design-specific furniture and technology. Teachers engaged in professional development courses that reinvented the traditional teaching structure.

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) was a district equity and system-wide initiative piloted in four schools during the 2018-2019 school year that provided hands-on training to empower teachers, students, parents, community members and educational leaders to challenge belief systems and practices that hinder them from achieving their true potential.

Educational leaders, teachers and volunteers at each of the four schools received on-going educational training, on-line resources, AVID library and membership to AVID and professional learning to improve their instructional practices.

Catalyst for Change STEM Grants covered a variety of goals/outcomes noted on the district’s updated strategic plan. The grants were open to any K-12 teacher to apply for classroom or school projects that impact student learning.

Leveraging Literacy to Connect Communities was a two-day event that focused on ‘best of the best’ strategies and tools that could be used to immediately enhance classroom instruction.

Twenty-five K-5 teachers attended and had the option to join any or all PD Connection Days.

Baker County Education Foundation Destination Graduation

Project Summary Destination Graduation through virtual pathways serves middle and high school students in our Career Alternative Teaching Skills Academy, referred to as CATS, as well as students at the high school in credit recovery classes. The students being served in these programs have fallen behind in grade levels and are low-performing, having the opportunity to improve academic deficiencies while catching up on courses they have previously failed. This program provides the opportunity to take state-mandated online course, as well as increase opportunities for students choosing to take additional online courses.

There are four different programs at Baker County High School that utilize the Plato Courseware: Opportunity School, Alternative School (Includes students in grades 6 - 8), 9th grade Personal School and Career Course, and the ACT Prep classes. Students in the ACT prep classes have been unsuccessful on the state testing for the FSA and need to pass the ACT for a concordant score. Ninth grade PSC classes work through the Academic Success Course and helps students develop study skills and test taking strategies. The Alternative School and the Opportunity School are programs that are primarily self-paced for students whether they are displaced for discipline, lack of credit, or are behind in grade levels. Each program works to make students successful at the high school and the middle school levels.

Project Summary This project is a classroom grant program to allow teachers to engage students in active learning. Grants were written by teachers and school leaders to fund individual classroom projects, as well as school and/or district-wide projects. These grants specifically impact the areas of science, technology, math, and reading and play a significant role in helping to improve literacy.

These grants afford teachers and school leaders the opportunity to enhance the curriculum with alternative means of presenting materials to students, especially struggling students, and not only have a positive effect on student achievement but also boost the morale of the teachers and school staff receiving them.

They help to make learning fun and more interesting for students and provide a more "handson" approach to learning to actively engage students.

Bay Education Foundation Expressway to Excellence

Project Summary The original intent of this program was to fund teacher projects to impact literacy in Bay District schools. After the October 10 landfall of Hurricane Michael, however, the Bay Education Foundation found itself acting as second-responders, supporting teachers and schools in re-stocking and refurbishing classrooms in every remaining school in the district. Funds were distributed based mainly on the school's pre-hurricane FTE, with larger amount going to those schools that had significant damage.

Teachers at more than two-thirds of the schools were unable to go back into their classrooms to retrieve any classroom materials.

Project Summary This project focuses on math and reading interventions in support of school improvement plans. IXL is a computer-based program, designed to build student proficiency on various skills aligned to the Florida Standards for middle school students. The main goal of the program was to improve math fluency through skill drill and practice. Students spent an hour a week in class on skills alignment and also had the opportunity to work on skills before and after school and at home.

Through support of book fairs, the foundation saw increased interest in reading. Students were encouraged to select a book that matches their level of reading and were given the opportunity to tell their classmates about the book they selected. Teachers and paraprofessionals assist the students in the selection of appropriate book.

Project Summary Although Brevard Public Schools is a high performing school district, achievement gaps exist and attention to this area must be addressed through building the capacity of teachers to meet the learning needs of each individual student. The purpose of Bright Ideas Classrooms Grants is to ensure teachers and administrators have the tools necessary to improve student learning for all students within the school system.

Bright Ideas Classroom Grants provided meaningful opportunities for teachers, or a team of teachers, to improve the quality of their teaching by developing and implementing creative and innovative projects that excite and engage students through experiential learning in their classrooms. Grant funds were used to enhance education by improving teaching quality in order to increase student achievement and engagement. Teachers identified how the project is expected to improve their instructional practice on Personal Performance Appraisal System Dimension and Element (IPPAS) #3: instructional delivery and facilitation, and non-identifiable data from classroom observations were used to evaluate improvements in instructional practice.

Project Summary To spark an interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education, each year since 2003, Brevard Public Schools and Brevard Schools Foundation have conducted the Space Week Program, now known as “Destination Space”. Exciting students to study STEM is key for K-12 education and a requirement to create the kind of workforce our country needs in order to maintain its economic power, and meet the demands of business in an increasingly complex and technology-driven economy.

Destination Space seeks to build a STEM pipeline using this unique experiential program developed with the expertise of NASA personnel along with other local businesses and educators. The Destination Space theme has changed from Past, Present, Future to Working and Living in Space-Destination Mars! All teachers were trained and had access to a comprehensive Destination Space website and Educator Activity Guides which they used to perform pre- and post-trip lessons and evaluations. Former Kennedy Space Center Director Jim Kennedy spoke at every elementary school to inspire the next generation of explorers through stories that teach leadership and character skills as they relate to astronauts, space exploration and the people involved.

Brevard Schools Foundation Supply Zone for Teachers

Project Summary The Supply Zone for Teachers is an educational resource center that provides free school supplies for those who need them most.

The Supply Zone is set up like a real store, except all products on the shelves are free for teachers. They take school supplies which are then used in the classroom or given directly to students who do not have supplies of their own. The store is stocked entirely through donations and with donated funds, and serves the teachers and students at Brevard County schools with the highest poverty levels. Supplies are also provided to the district's homeless student population.

Since a soft opening in May 2014, the Supply Zone has served more than 5,700 teachers, distributing more than $3.7 million in free school supplies. On average, each teacher saves over $425. Although initially serving only 16 high-poverty schools in the district, the Supply Zone has since expanded to serve 26 schools, all of which have 70% or more students enrolled in the Free/Reduced Lunch Program. The Supply Zone also serves Brevard's Homeless Student Liaison Teachers through special giveaway events. These teachers take free supplies which they then distribute to more than 2,300 recognized homeless students at all the public schools in Brevard County.

In addition to serving teachers, the Supply Zone serves students directly, once a year, for the Back to School Giveaway Event. Students no longer have to feel disconnected, embarrassed, and unprepared when they come to school without supplies; the tools they need to succeed are provided at the giveaway event or they are ready and waiting for them in the classroom.

Teachers no longer must reach in their pocket to ensure no child goes without; they can shop for free at the Supply Zone.

Broward Education Foundation Tools for Schools Broward Project Summary Broward Education Foundation School Supply Center is a program of the Broward Education Foundation that focuses on providing disadvantaged children from Broward County Public Schools with new school supplies.

Broward Education Foundation established the center where teachers from Broward County Public Schools can pick free school supplies for their students and classroom. Many of the children served by this program lack the basic school supplies that most children take for granted; others have supplies because their teachers have spent their own money to purchase supplies for them.

The School Supply Center is dedicated to ensuring that disadvantaged children have an opportunity to learn. The School Supply Center is a collaborative effort between Kids in Need Foundation, Broward County School District, local businesses, and community volunteers.

During the past academic year, School Supply Center donated over $1,651,583 worth of school supplies to Broward County School teachers and their students.

Broward Education Foundation Innovative Teaching Grant Program

Project Summary The goal of BEF Innovative Teacher Grant program is to give teachers and school-based administrators the opportunity to implement innovative programs that enhance the educational experience of students. The BEF Innovative Teacher Grant program connects outstanding teachers, improves classroom instruction, keeps good teachers teaching and provides lasting effects. The Innovative Teacher Grant Program recognizes and rewards outstanding teachers through grants, workshops, school site visits, publications and dissemination of program information. Students of all ages in Broward County Schools benefit from the stimulating learning projects that fund this program.

There are two types of Innovative Teacher grants: Adapter Grants (up to $400) are available to educators to purchase materials and to customize one of the featured ideas in the Teacher Idea Catalog (circulation to 17,000 educators) to fit their individual classroom need. Disseminator Grants (up to $1,000) are available to grant recipients whose project resulted in successful teaching strategies who want to share their idea or project with other educators. The goals and objectives of the disseminator grants must be measurable, while the project must demonstrate student potential. It must be an original project successfully implemented for more than one year and must have a high potential for adaptation at a low cost and involve easily accessible materials. Disseminator grant fund are used to market the idea or project to other educators and are highlighted in the Teacher Idea Catalog. Recipients of disseminator grants are honored at events attended by leaders from the educational and business communities and receive training in presentation skills and networking strategies. Additionally, disseminator grant recipients are showcased at the annual Teacher Idea Expo.

Charlotte Local Education Foundation Take Stock in Children Enhancement

Project Summary The Take Stock in Children program offers an educational pathway to deserving, low-income, at-risk students in our community by providing mentoring, tutoring, college readiness services, and college tuition scholarships. This innovative multi-year program provides services to students from middle school through grade 12. Through this grant we were able to provide the services of a CSC (College Success Coach) objectively measure student progress, and provide the extra assistance and advocacy these students need to make the most of opportunities. The CSC was able to exceed the required number of college coaching visits and track college readiness for each student.

With the help of this grant we were able to secure the position for our Data Specialist who is able to monitor grades, attendance, behaviors, and mentor sessions; these were measured quarterly during the school year. We are fortunate to have the assistance and access to the CCPS FOCUS system allowing us to view student grades, attendance, and behaviors weekly when needed. Mentors track their sessions using the TSIC database. This allowed us to closely monitor performance every nine weeks. Perhaps just as important is this allows us to respond quickly to any performance concerns. We respond within five days of noting any performance measure that falls below standard.

Charlotte Local Education Foundation The DBQ Project: Reading with Understanding, Thinking Critically, and Writing Clearly Project Summary As part of the District’s plan to implement the Florida State Standards, our secondary Social Studies teachers have been trained to use The DBQ Project. The DBQ Project integrates literacy skills with content in history. Historical content is embedded in a pedagogy called The DBQ Method that helps students learn to think critically and write clearly. As a result, these lessons address the Social Studies NGSSS, as well as the Language Arts Florida Standards in reading, writing, speaking and listening.

The DBQ Method helps all students read with understanding, think critically, and write clearly with support about history. We have expanded our implementation to our elementary schools, to include Grades 3-5.

Clay County Education Foundation Enhancing Educational Experiences for 21st Century Students Project Summary The Clay County Education Foundation provides teachers across the school district with classroom supplies and enrichment supplies that extend beyond that for which general funds are available. Through the mini-grant process, we are able to reach teachers from Keystone Heights to Orange Park, and everywhere in-between.

Grants are funded in each of the following areas in amounts up to $500.00 per teacher grant: Science/Technology/Engineering & Robotics (STEM), Career & Technical Education (CTE), and Literacy. This effort improves the quality of life for students and gives them access to materials, supplies, and experiences that they may not otherwise have access to. Clay County Education Foundation Marvelous MicroFarms! A Journey in STEM!

Project Summary The Clay County Education Foundation, in partnership with the School District of Clay County and a local partner developed and implemented school-based MicroFarms at three schools last year.

The schools which were selected represented those having the greatest socioeconomic and academic needs. Through the microfarms, cross-curriculum, integrated STEM units were implemented across all grade levels in each of the schools.

This project continues this work, growing deeper student engagement and development of STEM content-knowledge in a cross-curricular, standardsaligned manner. There was also a deliberate integration of the arts and writing by engaging students in research about the benefits of healthy eating. Free, interactive resources were made available and implemented through the program. The platform connected users to high quality, age-appropriate, interactive STEM resources. Additional resources, and teacher professional development, were provided utilizing Florida Ag in the Classroom. Curricula, which is aligned to Florida Standards, such as Gardening for Grades, Gardening for Nutrition, and Project Food, Land & People were utilized. These curricula supported and enhanced content area learning and connected to the school day.

Clay County Education Foundation MOSH Outreach for STEM Across the Schools

Project Summary This project gave students access to "museum type" demonstrations and hands-on experiences that they may not otherwise have access to. Many teachers would love to take their students on a field trip to the Museum of Science & History in Jacksonville, but transportation costs and time to travel prohibit many students from being able to visit the MOSH. Through outreach and partnership, students in selected Clay County Schools experienced the magic of the MOSH through outreach. MOSH staff, primarily scientists and certified teachers, visited schools and provided rich, hands-on STEM experiences. In addition, teachers received coaching on pre/post visit lessons and activities to build upon the experiences the students had during the day. This project was expanded to reach more students than in prior years.

MOSH offers a wide range of programs, which last approximately 45 minutes per lesson that were presented in the classroom setting to engage all learners. Programs were customized to meet the curricular needs of each school, and there was a focus this year on computer science integration, where appropriate and possible.

Columbia Public Schools Foundation Educator's Emporium

Project Summary Educator’s Emporium was created to meet the needs of the most economically vulnerable students in Columbia County by offering free school supplies - stocked entirely through donations - for those who need them most.

Without these supplies, teachers and students have difficulty performing to their full potential; when teachers have access to the tools they need, their students have a much better chance to learn, achieve, and succeed in school. Our district plan involves improving teaching quality and classroom instruction and the goal of the Emporium is to increase teacher quality and raise student performance. The foundation works to expand business and community partnerships to provide more opportunities for students including community engagement for this program. The Educators' Emporium serves as a central location for business, community organizations and individuals to donate new or gently-used supplies for the classroom year-round, instead of just one time a year.

The foundation engages local businesses to have school supply drives and utilizes volunteers to maximize effectiveness. Community and student volunteers help with sorting and stocking supplies, checking out teacher purchases, re-purposing items into more useful supplies and delivering school supplies to schools.

Columbia Public Schools Foundation Science Olympiad

Project Summary It was an exciting year for robotics in Columbia County. The robotics program continues to thrive and grow with the addition of two teams at Lake City Middle and Westside Elementary. STEM teachers and coaches met once a month to collaborate, plan, and support each other as they prepared for competitions. Lake City Middle School hosted a First Lego League practice event and schools from all over the area came to participate. All county teams attended a qualifying event, with five teams advancing to Regional Competition and one advancing to State Championship.

Science Olympiad is devoted to improving the quality of science education, increasing student interest in science and providing recognition for outstanding achievement in science education by both students and teachers. We hope to achieve these goals through participation in Science Olympiad tournaments and classroom activities. We believe learning is accelerated when students are given real-life problems to solve with experts who provide information and guidance. We collected surveys to measure interest in STEM careers and student performance in science, technology, engineering and math.

DeSoto County Education Foundation Raising the Bar with High Impact Instruction

Project Summary Raising the Bar with High Impact Instruction is a competitive minigrant project that awards funding to DeSoto County teachers for specific educational projects developed to support teaching and learning through the implementation of strategies that have a proven record of improving STEM and Literacy proficiency.

Overall, teacher projects aligned with school improvement plans.

Raising the Bar with High Impact grants provided funding opportunities for 45 teachers and grants and were awarded for three key areas: literacy, STEM and improving teacher quality.

A selection committee of DCEF board of directors chose grants that would have the most impact. Teachers were asked to use research-based strategies in the classroom to improve instruction. We had a rolling enrollment for the applications. As we received applications the committee would review them and decide to accept or reject the application.

Dixie Education Foundation Investing in Dixie Students Today for Career Success Tomorrow Project Summary The goal of this project was to build a framework from which the foundation assists Dixie County high school students with career exploration, test preparation and financial plans for CTE opportunities. Less than 10% of high school students complete a college degree which results in a large number of students requiring assistance with other types of career skill sets. This grant was the first of this type for the Dixie Education Foundation and has begun the framework from which we can expand our assistance to the Dixie School District, with a focus on CTE certification programs. The opportunities for our students to travel to area schools and meet instructors helped them with career choices. The test preparation materials and financial assistance with the costs of standardized tests helped them identify strengths.

Jacksonville Public Education Fund (Duval County) Elevating Teachers and the Teaching Profession Project Summary According to studies, approximately half of all teachers leave the profession within the first five years but they do not hit their stride in teaching until after five years. This indicates that the majority of teachers leave teaching before they have an opportunity to reach their optimal level in the profession. Additionally, teachers report feelings of isolation and not being seen as a professional as reasons for leaving the classroom. The purpose of this project was to increase the number of high-quality teachers who remain in the classroom by addressing these issues through the EDDYs experience and the Teachers Are More campaign.

To keep high-quality teachers in the classroom, we worked with the school-level teachers of the year to honor and celebrate them, provide professional learning opportunities, and improve leadership skills and opportunities. In October, we hosted Access and Equity Day as a part of their professional learning experience to address cultural competency in the classroom, and provided professional learning scholarships to each semi-finalist. We focused heavily on improving leadership skills, encouraging teachers to take on more leadership roles in their schools and involving them in community advocacy around a variety of education issues.

To provide opportunities where teachers are appreciated, our Teachers Are More campaign increased community awareness about teaching and the education profession. We displayed an interactive, multi-media "book" in several locations throughout the greater Jacksonville community to provide awareness about teacher challenges and impact. We shared statistics such as how much teachers spend of their own money, teacher retention data and school grades in Duval County.

Jacksonville Public Education Fund (Duval County) Measuring Quality as a Means of Improving Schools Project Summary When we began this work, we wanted to address the definition of quality so that everyone engaged in improving our schools was operating with a shared definition. To do this, we examined the factors that determine quality, from classroom instruction to welcoming environment to engagement of parents. We began researching national best practices on this topic, compiling data from a variety of cities and school districts. A trend emerged in progressive districts, showing tremendous improvements in quality of schools by focusing on the leadership of those schools. We engaged in several conversations with Duval County Public Schools, who also felt like an emphasis on school leaders is needed. Therefore, we refocused the measurements, engagements, partnerships, and overall program to look at school leaders as the means to improve quality.

We conducted national research on best practices, yielding the five categories for impacting quality through school leadership: Teacher Recruitment and Retention (strategic retainment of high-performing teachers, creating leadership opportunities for highly effective teachers, intensive novice teacher supports, and recruitment of teachers of color); School Climate and Culture (improving data for teacher-student relationships, student-student relationships, attendance, and discipline); Family and Community Engagement (improving parental interactions as well as engaging more organizations and volunteers to support student growth); Leadership and Management (strategic planning, employee management, budgeting, and analyzing data); and Instructional Leadership. Because instructional leadership is specific to DCPS expectations and guidelines, DCPS will spearhead work in that category. We developed four principal fellowship tracks for the other four categories. We will work with 12 principals each year (three in each category) for a three-year fellowship. Each principal fellow will set goals in their area specific to the challenges in their school. In Year One, we will provide executive coaching twice a month along with grant funding to support the work. Years Two and Three will see a reduction in coaching time with no grant support, but we will still be monitoring progress toward goal as well as student learning gains.

Escambia County Public Schools Foundation Grants for Excellence

Project Summary The Grants for Excellence program provides a means for teachers to apply for grants focusing on STEM and Literacy. This year we offered two grant levels, collaborative efforts across grade level or subject matter with an upper limit of $7,000 called All ABoard Grants and individual classroom grants called Teacher Opportunity Grants (TOGs) for up to $1,000 each. Altogether, 15 collaborative grants and 15 classroom grants were funded.

Grants for Excellence provides a way for teachers to bring innovative projects into the classroom and/or create opportunities for enhanced learning outcomes while allowing funds to have a broad "reach" into the classroom. Teachers use this funding to create innovative learning opportunities whereby students can apply the skills they learn in math, science, technology and literature to real world events.

This year's goal was to further student progress by maintaining focus on increasing reading and writing skills and STEM interest and, new this year, enhance retention rates by reducing referrals, absenteeism, tardiness, etc. Applications were submitted to the Grants Committee with the name of the teacher and school redacted and a scoring rubric used to ensure objectivity. The Grants for Excellence Committee is comprised of retired educators, community leaders, board members and donors. The process is highly competitive and our applications have been aligned with achievement priorities and outcome measures outlined by the School District, the CFEF and the Florida Legislature.

Flagler County Education Foundation Classroom to Careers - CTE Focus Project Summary Flagler Schools has established career paths and 21 Flagship programs aligned with targeted industries in direct collaboration with the Department of Economic Development, the Chamber of Commerce, and numerous other agencies. These industries include advanced manufacturing, agriculture, aviation and aerospace, life sciences, high technology, and corporate services. Connections to career pathways for students with expanded opportunities for dual enrollment, post-secondary education, and job embedded experiences are integral in this vision.

Since the inception of Flagships, programs have been established and added to the continuum as a result of direct requests to fulfill identified needs from employers. Examples include the Fire Leadership Flagship, developed at the direct request of the Flagler County Fire Department and affiliated with their certified training academy. Additionally, the Law and Justice Flagship at Matanzas High School was created at the request of the Flagler Sheriff’s Office who partnered in developing the direction and focus, along with local judges and attorneys. A Teaching Flagship has been created to address the statewide teaching shortage with a strong focus on recruiting and developing minority teachers.

High School students now have greater access to Industry Certification in each Program of Study. These are the same exams taken by college/technical center students and individuals in the workforce. Each certification is designed and approved by the individual industry. Examples include Microsoft Office Specialist, ServSafe (culinary), Veterinary Assistant, Adobe Photoshop, Introduction to Fire Fighting, Criminal Justice Operations, and NCCER (building trades). A student with these certifications can enter the workforce out of high school with verified skills.

The same student who completes a program study is eligible for a Gold Seal Scholarship, which is a part of the lottery-funded Bright Futures scholarship program. This scholarship can go toward post-secondary education for the student. For example, an aspiring fire fighter would benefit from firefighter & EMT certifications to obtain practical, applicable skills.

Flagler County Education Foundation Fund A Project

Project Summary This grant program addresses the need to help teachers engage students in the classroom and in turn improve classroom instruction. Flagler Schools encourages its teachers to be creative, innovative, explore and grow in their classroom. Flagler Schools initiated Classroom to Careers Flagship programs in response to workforce needs, working closely with the Chamber of Commerce and Flagler County Economic Opportunity Council to ensure classroom learning will provide students with the skills needed to compete in today's competitive market. The teachers who win grants are among the most innovative teachers in the district. They set the standard of excellence for others to follow.

Projects this year ranged from writing and publishing books to science, and everything in between. Projects such as kindergarten students writing and publishing books or middle school students 3D printing Megalodon teeth to better understand fossils are excellent ways to improve teaching quality and classroom instruction. Students are excited to be in the classroom, look forward to going to school every day and are eager to learn.

Franklin County School District Supplying Our Students for Success

Project Summary This project supported the provision of needed supplies in district classrooms and reduced the amount of money teachers spend out of their own pocket for these items. Our students are from low income households that often cannot support the added expense of purchasing these supplies, and teachers are already burdened by covering many costs related to running a classroom.

Supplies were purchased for classrooms, and teacher supply closets with consumable supplies were stocked so teachers could re-stock classrooms as needed throughout the year. These supplies met the needs of the teachers as labs and STEM activities occurred, and provided consumable materials the students needed (paper, pencils, pens, glue sticks, etc).

Gadsden Education Foundation Sparking New Beginnings

Project Summary This was a two-part project. One part focused on the tutoring of children in extended-day programs using the help of high school students to assist with pull-out and small group sessions. The second part of the project focused on community involvement and student-led projects at the high school that involved community partnerships. The tutoring project was year-long and occurred in the after school program for grades 1-3 in an attempt to provide early literacy skills and in grades 4-8 for students who were on the cusp of either meeting literacy goals or not.

The community project at the high school involved teams of high school students formed into groups with a community and external team manager. Each team chose a project to work on at the high school. One team did a high school beautification project in conjunction with Home Depot as the primary sponsor and local businessmen to assist with construction and provide larger equipment. One group worked on providing local residents (destitute from the hurricane) with relief supplies and personal hygiene items. Another group worked at raising motivation and engagement of other high school students in a Rites of Passage project to ensure the students stayed focused to complete studies, move through high school with better behavior and move through toward graduation on time with their cohort.

Gilchrist County Schools Learn All Day!

Project Summary This project aligned with and supported goals/objectives within the Gilchrist County School District Strategic Plan by providing an additional learning opportunity for disadvantaged preschool-aged children beyond the regular school day. Four year olds are able to receive a half day of service through a VPK Certificate, but many are not able to take advantage of that free service because of the inability to be picked up in the middle of the day (parental working schedule, lack of transportation, etc). In addition, many of the academically and economically disadvantaged students are actually three years old instead and are not eligible for a VPK certificate. Therefore, there were many students not receiving services that needed them.

A partnership with the United Way is helping to solve the problem by funding the second half of the day for four year olds, and a full day for three year olds that are identified as at-risk.

Through this project, those same students received supplemental programming from 3:15 to 6:15 each day. This design leveraged existing funds/services to maximize the learning opportunities for these at-risk children.

The project goal/objective was to ensure that a minimum of 10% of students improved from pre to post assessment, and that 90% of participating students would be scoring as kindergarten "Ready" by the end of the program year as measured by VPK Assessment. We were able to make these improvements for 24 primary participants, meaning the students that directly participated. We have been able to achieve an improvement in literacy for participating students, but also have achieved outcomes related to an improvement in language, mathematics, social, personal and other skills.

Glades Education Foundation AVID About Success Project Summary The AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program was begun in Glades County Schools in 2016 and achieved further expansion into grades 3-12 during the 2018-2019 school year.

There were 21 teachers trained at the 2018 AVID Summer Institute, and 14 teachers currently registered to attend the 2019 AVID Summer Institute. This intensity of training resulted in a growth of the AVID program in grades 3-12 county-wide.

Teachers in grades 3-5 focused on introducing academic organization to their students through the use of an AVID binder in August and September, 2018. Middle and High School students learned note-taking skills, collaborative communication, and college-planning strategies in AVID elective classes throughout the school year. AVID students in 8th grade were encouraged to take advanced courses such as Algebra I Honors or Biology I Honors, and pass the EOC exam. AVID high school students were also motivated to take Honors and AP classes, as well as prepare for post-secondary education via college/technical school visits and financial aid planning.

The over-arching goal of AVID is to prepare students to become more organized, challenged students, better communicators and self-advocates in class, efficient planners of post-secondary education and training, as well as have many of the soft skills necessary to be a quality employees in their future careers. AVID strategies will have a direct impact on student performance on state-administered assessments, and over the long term, increase graduation rates and entry into post-secondary education.

Project Summary The Glades Grants for Great Ideas (GGGI) project was designed to support the School Improvement Plan Goal “By the end of the school year, increase achievement of all students by 3% on all measurable state administered exams." Six classroom grants in the amount of $8,000, five group projects were awarded at $1,500 each and one individual teacher was awarded $500.

The Education Foundation of Gulf County Teach, Inspire, Innovate Classroom Grants

Project Summary The Education Foundation of Gulf County manages a classroom/teacher mini-grant program that focuses on improving Literacy, STEM opportunities, Career and Technical Education, and strives to target low-performing students through its sponsored projects. Our private-match dollars are the result of a partnership with Duke Energy to increase STEM learning in Gulf County. This partnership has resulted in a multi-year, multi-school focus that provides innovative STEM learning from pre-school through graduation.

Students in primary grades are instructed in computer science, coding, and elementary robotics.

Students in the middle grades continue this focus with Career Technical classes, Underwater Robotics, and Technology instruction. Students in high school have the opportunity to enter the Drone Aviation program, where they can become certified drone pilots. This exciting STEM coursework is inclusive and supports diverse students. The funds to support this focus then provide the match required to offer our classroom teachers the opportunity to apply for a competitive classroom grant to support our focus of Literacy, STEM, CTE, and Low-performing students. Gulf County Teachers submit grant proposals to the executive board of The Education Foundation of Gulf County, who then completes a blind scoring process and awards funding to projects with the best potential to increase student achievement, improve student engagement, and which reflects the priority and focus of our foundation.

Hamilton County Public Schools Foundation Career/Graduation Mentor

Project Summary Hamilton County Public Schools Foundation created a mentoring program that focused on increasing graduation rates and college access for at-risk students attending Hamilton County High school.

The foundation supported a mentor and created a career/graduation program for Seniors. The mentor worked with students who had been chosen for the STARS program to make sure students stayed on track and had the support to complete high school and continue their education to earn at least a two-year degree. The mentor also provided career exploration, post-secondary planning, career planning, scholarship applications and support on ACT or SAT and how to prepare. The foundation assisted STARS students with paying for ACT/SAT tests. The most significant outcomes for the year was increasing student involvement, strengthening student retention in the STARS program and increasing graduation rates.

Students used a tutorial program with APEX learning to work on their reading through an ACT/SAT tutorial program. The programs were used with students over a nine-week period to increase their scores and improve their ability to pass the FSA/ACT or SAT to earn their reading requirement for graduation.

Hamilton County Public Schools Foundation Engaging with Science Projects

Project Summary The Hamilton County Public Schools Foundation worked with Hamilton County Elementary school to support STEM and science enrichment projects for students in K-6 grades. Students worked in groups, with teachers and at home with parents with full access to a variety of technology devices including iPads and laptop computers for research. The grant provided students with the needed material to make their projects look professional. It also provided teachers with materials that normally would have to be purchased by students.

Students who participated in this enrichment program received an in-depth look at the scientific method, the steps in how to conduct experiments, record data, and present a science project properly. The project also increased knowledge and proficiency in science and related subjects and was designed to provide students an opportunity for learning the 21st century skills of critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, communication and research. The projects provided standards-based science projects introducing students to the scientific method, physical science, chemistry, mathematics, creativity, research, documentation, presentation and imagination.

Hamilton County Public Schools Foundaton Science and Ag Department Collaboration Project

Project Summary The Hamilton County High School Ag and Science department comprehensive project shows students dominance and codominance in character traits primarily through poultry, garden and aquatics components. Students observed the process of recycling items from the poultry center to fertilize the garden and the water from the hydroponics used on the garden. They learned the difference on the growth of the plants based on the materials used.

Students were engaged in a series of tutorials and hands-on opportunities at the project site. As a multi-year project, students have been able to watch the results of different genes come back to the original colored breeds of chickens. The tilapia that were placed in their hydroponics pools during the 2017-2018 year grew from fingerlings to hand size or larger.

This year’s project continued to allow students to grow their knowledge in genetics, recycling of materials, and giving of produced items. The program gives items produced from this project - eggs, vegetables and tilapia - back to the community through the outreach program in the school system. Students participating in this enrichment program had an in-depth look at the steps in how to conduct experiments and record data, and gained real-life knowledge hopefully transitioning the experience into a STEM career. The project also increased knowledge and proficiency in science and related subjects. Students were able to see how learning could be fun and why it is important to be successful. They were also able to relate what they learn in school to how it can be used when entering the working world. Because this program is hands-on and students can see a reason for learning, they are more likely to stay in school since they enjoy learning. We continued the program/grant in our Career and Technical Education (CTE) area to help our students improve their skills to be better prepared when they enter the postsecondary and working environment. Students that participate in CTE programs are found to stay in school and be better prepared in the labor field, gaining certifications in areas that make them more employable.

Hardee Education Foundation A Higher Hardee Project Summary A Higher Hardee was focused on improving the overall performance of the school district by providing opportunities for student and teacher growth. Enhancing instruction in Literacy and STEM requires targeting low-performing students, improving teaching quality and instructional delivery, and providing rigorous, standards-based instruction. A Higher Hardee implemented projects that ensured all instructional targets were met: Love of Literacy expanded the Battle of the Books competition, a voluntary reading incentive program based on the Sunshine State Young Reader Award books.

The purpose was to encourage students to read good books and have fun while competing with peers.

Science Expo provided an opportunity for students to participate in activities that encourage scientific curiosity and the love of science and foster independent learning. Students learned to recognize problems, plan an experiment, gather and analyze data, and draw conclusions.

Teacher to Teacher sought teachers that had developed and successfully used innovative teaching practices in their classrooms. These teachers, called "Developers," worked with the Foundation over the course of a school year to produce the Idea Catalog of Excellence in which their program is highlighted. Then in the fall, new Developers join with Developer Alumni to present their innovative programs at the Idea Expo.

Technology for All provided tools necessary to help engage students with interactive lessons and prepare them for an increasingly digital workforce.

Hendry Public Schools Foundation Digital Literacy Initiative

Project Summary This project addressed digital literacy, career exploration and industry certification with the goal of increasing students' ability to access online resources to earn high school credits and industry certifications. By intervening early, we hoped to increase student success when they arrive to High School, contributing to an increase in graduation rates.

We offered students the opportunity to earn high school credits online as well as industry certifications while at the Middle School. Additionally, increasing student access to digital resources helps satisfy the High School graduation requirement to complete one online class. We measured success by monitoring enrollment and successful completion of industry certifications and online high school courses.

In order to offer these opportunities, we needed additional Chromebooks as all of the industry certification material and exams are online. In addition, students used digital resources to work on high school courses.

Hendry Public Schools Foundation ELA Boot Camp After School

Project Summary This project is designed to help third through fifth grade students who were more than two grade levels below in ELA in reading comprehension. All students took a Diagnostic assessment and this data was used to monitor where the student individual needs were.

Students were supported with small group (6-10 students) instruction in the ELA Boot Camp after school, and the teacher used skills and standards that the students lack to help improve their reading comprehension. When not in a small group rotation, students would work on a Chrome Book working on ELA skills, either on iReady or IXL. Hendry Public Schools Foundation Math Fluency Project Summary This project supports the development of basic math concepts leading to application of more complex math skills needed for higher mathematics through the use of Reflex Math program. The students’ starting group fluency average was 21.6% on level fluency with math facts. The program allowed them to participate in fluency games that challenged their speed and accuracy. Increasing proficiency in this area allows students to focus on more complex math calculations.

Hernando County Education Foundation Tools 4 Schools

Project Summary The Tools for Schools Supply Store allows the teachers an opportunity to visit the store monthly and select items needed for their classrooms or for students in need. With the school district’s budget being reduced significantly causing a major decrease in financial support for instructional staff, this program allowed teachers the ability to alleviate some of the pressure as to how their classroom and students will be able to receive the necessary needed tools to function effectively.

Instructional staff visited monthly throughout the school year and on scheduled days during the summer. The items available to each teacher included: paper, student needs, personal care items, writing supplies, teacher/student incentives, bulletin board supplies, art supplies, class sets of instructional supplies/books, etc. This program is supported by volunteers, students and teachers and managed/operated by the Hernando County Education Foundation. Volunteers assist in the areas of: check in/out process, restocking items to the shelves and sorting inventory/donated items. Supply drives were hosted throughout the year with collaboration from various organizations such as Walmart, Target and others to aid with the on-going efforts to keep the store “fully loaded”.

Volunteers have been critical to the operation of the school store; we currently have over ten volunteers ready to assist and we are always looking for more. This past year we gave out over $100,000 in supplies and items for students in need. We had over 1,000 teachers participate in the program and impacted over 22,000 students (indirectly).

Highlands County Education Foundation Leader in Me

Project Summary "The Leader in Me� program has been implemented at elementary schools in Highlands County for the past few years and is built upon the book, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. These 7 habits present a holistic, integrated, principle-centered approach for leading in the 21st century. The focus of the grant is to increase knowledge about teaching The Leader in Me process and to improve attitudes towards teaching, with a direct focus of enhancing teacher quality.

This grant opportunity provided teachers and staff an opportunity to participate in professional development by attending a Leadership Symposium. The Symposium provided an opportunity for teachers and staff to celebrate the accomplishments of schools that participate in this movement and collaborate with other educators on how leadership has transformed their schools and communities. Teachers and staff had opportunities to hear stories from students leading for the first time, schools reaching new heights and staff collaborating at new levels.

During the Leadership Symposium teachers and staff visited schools that are fully implementing The Leader in Me process, heard Keynote Speakers, participated in breakout sessions to further clarify best practices, and participated in table topics to gain understanding of this process.

Hillsborough Education Foundation School & Curriculum Enrichment Grants

Project Summary The Hillsborough Education Foundation provided school and classroom enrichment grants to give students access and the opportunity to be creative, collaborative, engaged and excited about learning. The enrichment opportunities allowed teachers to deliver differential instruction based on common core standards.

Outcomes reported by teachers include, but are not limited to, students gained higher fluency rates and comprehension, critical thinking skills, increased scores on mid-year and final assessments, even other teachers coming to their classroom to learn from their program implementation due to student progress. Teachers and administrators were encouraged to apply for funding to support classroom instruction or school wide initiatives.

Through an application process they provided a program overview with a detailed budget.

Classroom and school enrichment grants range between $100-$2,000 per program or project.

HEF awarded 106 projects totaling $142,563 in awards. The majority of the projects were provided to advance learnings tied to Florida standards or enrich the school through a schoolwide program. Projects ranged in a multitude of focus areas from Literacy, STEM, Music, Arts, to Career and Tech. The largest number of funded projects were geared toward language arts with 38 funded programs totaling an investment of almost $49K. We chose to focus a large part of our available funding to this initiative to support the district’s focus to have all third grade students reading at grade level which is currently at 53%.

Hillsborough Education Foundation Take Stock In Children Hillsborough County Project Summary The Take Stock in Children program (TSIC) provides the promise of a college scholarship, support of a college success coach and a caring mentor committed to helping each student achieve academic and personal success to students who might not otherwise have the opportunity to attend college.

A critical component of our program is providing mentors to our TSIC scholars who build meaningful relationships with others who deeply care about their success and help them reach their full potential. During weekly mentoring sessions, students set goals, build positive values, develop academic skills, and practice life skills to help them excel in their schoolwork. College Success Coaches (CSC) support each of the mentors and regularly meet with students. Each CSC focuses on development of study skills, monitors course and class selection, grades, attendance, and performance of their assigned students. Their efforts also focus on long-term planning for college and career success. Special attention is given to SAT/ACT prep, college essays, FAFSA and other scholarship application completion.

College and Career readiness workshops included topics such as financial literacy, FAFSA and financial aid, trade career explorations, professional development skills, and leadership for middle school students. Our program also puts emphasis on teaching the importance of giving back with opportunities for mentors and mentees to volunteer together at a community organization. This year we had three events where they volunteered at our teaching tool store and local food banks.

Our added “Skills for Life” guide helped mentors expand topics and activities to work with mentees. Within this book there are four skill building activities for each of the following competencies: communication, grit, responsibility and accountability, gratitude, professionalism, honesty and integrity.

Hillsborough Education Foundation Teaching Tools Store

Project Summary The Teaching Tools Store Program (TTS) provides free resources for teachers and school supplies to students attending a Title I designated school within Hillsborough County. Often, these students cannot afford the basic school supplies needed throughout the year.

The Teaching Tools Store fills this gap by supplying teachers at Title I schools with free school supplies to distribute to their students.

Our TTS is open after school three days a week and two Saturdays for teachers to shop monthly during the academic year. From pencils, to notebooks, to art supplies and books, TTS provides free school supplies and alleviates the burden on teachers to spend their own money on supplies. One of our core beliefs is that every student should have access to and opportunity to benefit from a high-quality education. Our TTS ensures every student has the tools they need to be engaged in their learning.

The Hillsborough Education Foundation provided $3,543,794 worth of teacher resources and schools supplies for 176 different Title 1 and DJJ programs impacting over 111,000 students in school year 2018-2019.

Education Foundation of Indian River County High Impact Grants

Project Summary We invest in student achievement. High Impact Grants fund innovative solutions to break down learning barriers. We provide an entrepreneurial opportunity for school teams to pilot an innovative concept that advances student achievement. This competitive grant process funds evidence based models that support School Improvement Plans. Selected projects align with the School District of Indian River County's Strategic Plan to support focus areas of school climate, science, math and reading.

The Education Foundation of Indian River County funded nine initiatives, totaling $117,899.84, to support seven local schools and two district-wide programs called STEP (Summer Transition Enrichment Program) and Success Through Science. More than 2,000 students (Pre-K through 12th) and nearly 200 teachers benefited from this support to open doors to student success.

Jackson County Education Foundation Granting Success through Classroom Grants Project Summary With this project, the Jackson County Education Foundation funded 30 mini grants across the county for K-12th grade classrooms: two school-wide grants applied for by administrators amd the other 28 to individual teachers or grade groups. The funds were put to use in numerous ways including headphones and laptops crucial in this year's state testing schedule. Additionally, science lab materials, classroom libraries, printers, preferential seating arrangements, and experiences outside of the classroom were provided to students of Jackson County.

Unfortunately Hurricane Michael was unforeseeable and produced hurdles for both the board of directors and the educators. However, listening to the presentations it was made known just how needed the funds were. For example, Grand Ridge School experienced damage to several buildings, which impacted testing this year. Because of laptops purchased through this program, students were able to test with minimal distraction, rather than in a building undergoing roof repairs.

Lafayette Penny Foundation Full STEAM Bins Ahead @ LES

Project Summary The students at Lafayette Elementary, although rural, are not exposed to enough hands-on building, creating and collaborating to encourage brain growth in problem solving and critical thinking.

Literacy is connected to these skills and will help them overall in other academic areas, such as math and science. Lafayette Elementary School’s Library was transformed to a S.T.E.A.M./Library Lab for students, teachers and families to be able to collaborate with each other over lifelong learning experiences.

The Library Lab includes collaborative seating areas, comfortable seating areas to read a book and a space to create and conduct activities that include all modalities of learning. Teachers and the lilbrarian can use the space with their students and families can come explore and learn with their children. With S.T.E.A.M bins, teachers can borrow a bin with all contents ready and available for him/her to use in his/her classroom or in the Library Lab, or the Librarian can use with the students during his/her Makerspace lessons. The bins include a book to read to the students, and the directions with standards for the grade level, and all required materials for the lesson.

Educational Foundation of Lake County Student Achievement Through College and Career Readiness Project Summary The focus of the project was to prepare and engage students for life after high school through career and technical education programs and support to complete the Cambridge Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) diploma. CTE gives high school students the chance to get a head start on preparing for college and careers and through this program, students can receive the following industry certifications: Certified Medical Assistant, Certified Nursing Assistant, ServSafe Food Protection Manager, National Registry of Food Safety Management, Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop, ArcGIS Desktop Entry, Automotive Serve Excellence, Farm Bureau Agriculture Technician, and Agriculture Associate. These CTE programs were funded in seven middle and high schools. The AICE program gave students the opportunity to receive an international diploma and 100% Bright Futures funding. The Aviation Club gave students hands on opportunities to discover the STEM field through aviation.

The Foundation for Lee County Public Schools Collegium for the Advancement of Education

Project Summary Collegium for the Advancement of Education is a program that shares best practices for excellence in teaching based on the integration of the Sterling and Glasser models of Quality Training.

Teachers trained in this philosophy develop ways to examine data, set and monitor goals, and integrate quality tools into the classroom. The program provides strategies for increasing student achievement by helping students to self-evaluate and make responsible choices. The training is led by the Coordinator for Quality and DCP Curriculum and Staff Development Center from the School District of Lee County and other qualified school administrators and principals who have experienced the success of implementation of the training methods within their schools.

This year’s event provided five days of Glasser/Sterling training to 28 high-performing teachers, one principal, and one assistant principal. These participants represented 19 District schools, as well as one school from a neighboring county. Attendees were engaged in hands-on learning opportunities throughout the week. Their final project was to produce a 15-minute presentation that displayed their learning in a humorous, entertaining format. Educators trained at Collegium for the Advancement of Education develop ways to integrate the Sterling quality teaching tools into their classrooms and to apply the Glasser Reality Therapy questioning process to motivate students to take more responsibility for their learning and behavior. These questions are used to assess learning, academic progress and behavioral choices. Statistics have shown that teachers who have invested in this training and adopted these teaching tools provide higher quality education to their students. The goals of the program are improved communication, productivity, and effectiveness in teaching. This program provides teachers and administrators with the psychological background on how and why children behave as they do by combining psychology, effective teaching, leadership skills, and intervention strategies.

Teachers utilizing these methods are able to provide a balanced, long-term successful approach for classroom management and student achievement.

The Foundation for Lee County Public Schools Dancing Classrooms

Project Summary The Dancing Classrooms Program is designed ensure each student reaches his or her highest potential by addressing the academic and social-emotional needs of our students in order to inspire them to think and learn. Dancing Classrooms brings ballroom dancing to more than 1,000 fifth grade students in eight schools in the district, the majority of which are designated as Title I schools as determined by the state poverty level guidelines. The program's outcomes have shown improvement in behavior, academics, selfesteem, and teamwork for participants.

The Foundation for Lee County Public Schools provides certified teaching artists to each of the participating schools to teach 20 lessons over a 10-week period. The Dancing Classrooms program utilizes ballroom dancing to nurture qualities that foster respect, teamwork, confidence, and a sense of joy and accomplishment. The Dancing Classrooms program also provides a connection to school curriculum in several different subject areas. Teaching artists incorporate Social Studies and History through storytelling and sharing the customs and cultures of where the various dances originated.

Students are tasked with completing homework detailing what they have learned in the program each week. Physical Education is incorporated through body awareness, sportsmanship, and movement. This program is taught and presented as “disciplined fun” that places an emphasis on conduct, working with a partner, and gaining knowledge of specific steps that correlate with each type of music. The classes are structured so that discipline is not conceptualized or perceived as separate from the activity itself. All students participate at all times, either as dancers or active watchers, creating assignments for specific problem solving and using the concept of "Phantom/Ghost Partners" when necessary.

The Foundation for Lee County Public Schools FutureMakers

Project Summary FutureMakers is an initiative that focuses on increasing the awareness of possible career and educational paths available to high school students to be measured by the percentage of seniors who have completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). By increasing the number of high school seniors that complete the FAFSA, we can increase the number of students taking that next step after graduation. The program began five years ago in three of the public high schools. We have now expanded the program to all 14 public high schools. Through our partnership with the School District of Lee County we visit every school multiple times to promote FAFSA completion, scholarship opportunities, College Nights, College Goal Sunday, and the various College and Career Center workshops that we offer, including information about resumĂŠ writing, test (SAT/ACT) prep, scholarship searches, interview skills, college applications, and financial aid.

We are using social media and email to promote as well. FAFSA office hours are scheduled at all schools during the day, once a month at each school in addition to FSA ID assistance throughout several classrooms. We also hold FAFSA completion events in the evenings at most schools. Students fill out pre- and post-surveys and are entered into our database. We use this database to keep in contact with the students to ensure they are receiving necessary information about financial aid, scholarships, and workshops. We communicate with specific FutureMakers coordinators within each high school. The district also provides us with data necessary to assess the success of the program.

This program aligns with the District's goal of increasing student achievement. We are providing necessary resources to ensure academic and post-secondary success. This program also provides additional opportunities for students to participate in Career and Technical Education programs. We ensure that all students have access to comprehensive student services, including the resources and information they will need to make informed, educated decisions about their post-secondary choices.

The Foundation for Lee County Public Schools STAMP

Project Summary The Student Advocacy and Mentoring Partnership (STAMP) program provides comprehensive services to students to ensure high school graduation. STAMP provides a variety of services to students such as one-on-one mentoring, educational workshops, case management and career exploration opportunities. The STAMP program manager coordinates case management, education workshops, and scholarship opportunities.

The goals of program activities are to provide each student with extensive guidance and help them create a plan for life after high school graduation. Mentoring sessions must occur on school grounds for at least 30 minutes twice a month (at least once face-to-face and the other meeting can utilize technology in some way such as texting, phone call, Skype, Facetime).

Students must also attend educational workshops at least once a year, with the opportunity to attend multiple workshops. Senior STAMP students are required to attend a financial aid/FAFSA workshop, held at our location. Students are also offered an evening workshop to assist them in completing college and/or technical school applications.

Foundation for Leon County Schools Igniting Instruction through Innovation and Inspiration Project Summary The Foundation for Leon County Schools (FLCS) was created to support K-12 resources that are not funded by tax dollars to our public schools. The Foundation established the LCS Teacher Grants program to enhance classroom instruction and recognize teachers for innovation and creativity. Since 1989, the Foundation has awarded over $2 million to fund thousands of grants.

Because we want to impact as many students as possible, we ask that teachers work cooperatively in the application process. In other words, two or more teachers should develop a grant request. All Leon County public K-12 school teachers may apply. A school may submit more than one application per year; however, we ask that teachers take part in only one grant so dollars can be stretched to include as many teachers as possible.

Grants are awarded based on projects that are substantive in content and have potential to make the greatest impact. The grant application must demonstrate instruction aligned with school and district goals, a measurable educational impact, and the ability to be duplicated for ongoing and future implementation.

Levy County Schools Foundation Building for Success

Project Summary This project focused on two areas this year, teaching quality and student achievement. It was our goal to improve teacher quality and retention in the new teacher pool in our district. Turnover the last few years has been high and our intent was to invest in new teachers who are eager to grow and improve, and stay within the district. The foundation made mentors available to teachers who could use some extra help in their planning, organization, classroom management, teaching technique or other areas of weakness in the classroom. Along with the mentoring program, we provided resources and supplies focused on professional development for our inexperienced teachers. Teachers were trained in Kagan strategies and provided Kagan resources to incorporate the highly effective strategies into their classrooms. Many times all it takes is a little extra push through extra attention, extra resources, extra training, etc. for a struggling or inexperienced teacher to be successful. The projects funded through the state matching grant program provided those little 'extras' for many teachers in our district.

The second part of this project focused on student achievement. District science scores have been sorely lacking the last two years and our focus has shifted to the STEM area. The foundation provided field trips for students, which in our rural area can be life changing. The hands-on experiences provided by field trips motivated students to do better in science. Along with field trips, the foundation provided students with science supplies and equipment.

Panhandle Area Community OutReach GAME ON! Physical Activity in the STEM Zone

Project Summary GAME ON! Physical Activity in the STEM Zone was a successful program at WR Tolar K-8 School in Liberty County. The project allowed Physical Education teachers to pair STEM and physical movement into lessons teaching Math and Science. The teachers were successful in using the equipment purchased to engage and excite students about their learning and their futures. Students were eager to participate in this type learning because it paired the student's world with a scientific lens focused on something fun.

The project purpose was manifested as the youth were inspired to take better care of their bodies through a firm understanding of physical activity, nutrition, and health.

STEM was utilized by students in critical thinking, problem solving, curiosity, and data collection both inside and out. BEAM was purchased for the use indoors with physical activity and STEM even on rainy days. BEAM changed how the student's played. It also changed how they socialize, educate, and fight childhood obesity at Tolar school. Playtime with BEAM is both mental and physical, stimulating mind and body. A state-of-the-art projection screen combined with dual motion sensors turns a normal floor into an outdoor playground, complete with wildly addictive STEM games, a fun social atmosphere, and lots of physical activity! Whether utilizing sporting equipment, simple machines, or extreme physical activity that the BEAM projector enabled, the students of WR Tolar School experienced STEM like never before. PE Teachers assisted in the learning project with a pre and post test with students, as well as charting the data from Heart Rate monitors. Through these methods, it was easy to see exactly what the students learned. However, the joy of understanding the "whys," "hows" and the science behind movement through this project is what made it a success with the students, teachers, and administration.

Project Summary Through this program, teachers in Madison County were given the opportunity to apply for classroom mini-grants. Twenty teachers applied and were awarded grants ranging from $200 to $750 each.

Manatee Education Foundation Nature's Academy STEM Field Trips

Project Summary This STEM literacy project was launched in 2009 by Nature's Academy and the Manatee County School District to improve standardized test scores for fifth graders. The opportunity for students to attend an outdoor marine science-based field trip helps our underserved students who would not be able to attend a program like this one and support two of the district's goals to cultivate innovation and improve student achievement in Science, and to support community engagement and involvement through developing and sustaining strong partnerships. Nature's Academy brings curriculum to life by engaging students in inquiry-driven activities that inspire them to become both citizen scientists and environmental ambassadors for our community.

Nature's Academy enhances STEM literacy and fosters environmental stewardship. Students enjoy the freedom of traveling to Leffis Key and Coquina Beach to dip nets for further study of marine life and to help with coastal clean-up. They study water quality and watershed ecology.

Project Summary The mission of Sour in 4 is to ensure all four-year olds have the opportunities and support to succeed in pre-school, school and beyond by focusing on reading and other classroom materials for underpriveleged children. This program transforms neighborhoods through conversations, family nights and leveraging community resources to create generational change, educational success and economic stability. The Soar in 4 initiative includes bi-weekly phone conversations with children's teachers, celebrations and family goal setting with a life coach that includes financial, housing, health and educational support. Soar in 4 schools focused on learning through play and parent engagement. In 2018-19 the Soar in 4 program served six high-need school zones/neighborhoods, bringing critical resources to 26 classrooms, including Family Literacy Year self-contained kits for the home. These instructional materials include support to implement the language, literacy and mathematics curricula.

Manatee Education Foundation Teacher IMPACT Grants 2018.2019

Project Summary The Teacher IMPACT grants directly supports the school district's strategic plan by enhancing instructional quality and cultivating innovation that provides appropriate technology support to improve instruction, with focus on literacy and STEM in our classrooms.

This year we were able to support over 241 teachers with 144 grants, impacting close to 30,000 students. These grants help empower our students to develop stronger literacy and STEM skills.

Teachers were able to: provide great iReady data for measurement; order new books through Follet Library bound book, which guaranteed their bindings in the future and book replacement free of charge; provide a variety of opportunities to enhance and develop writing, speaking and reading skills by receiving literacy games, journals to help build comprehension and vocabulary; utilize a multi-sensory phonics program, called "Lively Letters" to help first graders reach their full reading potential and to be fully prepared for next level reading; help kindergarteners in Listening Centers hear stories from different genres being read aloud as they follow with the text; opportunities to learn coding and building robots; host a STEM night with over 250 people participating, that featured information regarding a turtle watch, water conservation management, mosquito control and local environmental groups; and support other great programs.

Project Summary Grants for Great Ideas supported the Marion County Public Schools Strategic Plan by funding projects and programs that enhanced a quality education and supported all grade levels and educational levels. Grants for Great Ideas is a competitive grant program open to all Marion County Public School teachers and school administrators. The grants provide financial resources to implement creative and innovative curriculum and programs that would otherwise go unfunded.

All grants must fit one of the following categories: STEM/STEAM Education, Career Tech, Increasing Graduation Rates, Improving Literacy, Support for Low Performing Students or Increasing Teacher Quality and all grant recipients were required to submit a mid-year and a final evaluation.

Education Foundation of Martin County EFMC Elementary Book Bowl

Project Summary Move over Spelling Bee...here comes the Book Bowl...The Education Foundation of Martin County Elementary Book Bowl is designed to promote students' love of reading by encouraging them to read the current list of Sunshine State Young Readers Award (SSYRA) book titles. Sets of all 15 SSYRA titles are purchased for all participating elementary schools. Students are encouraged to read all of these titles throughout the school year and earn a "brag tag" incentive for each book they read. A school team of up to 15 students, who have read all 15 books, is selected to represent each of the participating schools. These teams go on to compete in a game-show style Book Bowl where they are quizzed on the SSYRA books. Teams practice (re-reading, discussing, strategizing, creating their own questions/answers, testing each other, etc.) throughout the spring in preparation for the big event. Community volunteers, celebrity moderators, guest judges, parents, student teams, school administrators, media specialists, and teachers come together for a full day Elementary Book Bowl celebrating the love of reading.

Students are awarded participation medals/ribbons and the winning teams are awarded trophies. School media specialists and classroom teachers promote the love of reading, engage students in book clubs and reading circles, and create traveling displays to generate excitement and encourage student participation in the program. Since the start of this program, we have seen an increase in the number of students actively reading current children's literature titles, participating in reading clubs and book bowl teams, and an increase in reading scores.

Each of our 12 elementary schools participate, including one middle school that serves grades 5-8. The program has been so successful that we are now being asked to expand to include the middle school students.

Education Foundation of Martin County Oneders - Cohort of First Grade Teachers Strengthening Literacy Instructional Practice Project Summary The "ONEders" is a first grade cohort of teachers (two teachers from each of nine participating schools for a total of 18 teachers) who worked with the district's Elementary Literacy Coordinator in a professional learning group. The cohort met monthly throughout the school year to delve into "Breaking Through the Language Arts Block: Organizing and Managing the Exemplary Literacy Day" and "Conventions and Craft" as they honed their instructional skills in an effort to increase on-level reading skills for first graders and reduce first grade retention rates.

Professional resources were purchased for each participating teacher along with hands-on learning materials to be used with students when implementing learned strategies. Participating teachers and their administrators agreed to add more minutes of literacy instruction every day for a total of 120-180 minutes (more than currently required by the state or MCSD). The instruction was divided into quarters with 25% devoted to words and word parts (e.g. letters, sounds, decoding, PA), 25% to oral reading fluency, 25% to reading comprehension and 25% to writing with a focus of embedding content into these quarters through the use of multi-sensory literacy best practices and strategies. Students of participating first grade teachers outscored their counterparts in all domains of reading according to the Spring iReady Diagnostic.

Education Foundation of Martin County PLAYS Program - Purposeful Language Acquisition Yields Success Project Summary The goal of the EFMC PLAYS (Purposeful Language Acquisition Yields Success) project was for participating kindergarten students to increase proficiency on iReady reading tests.

The EFMC created themed kits were used for 30 minutes daily in participating kindergarten classrooms. During this time, kindergarten students interacted with real life objects in play groups that promoted language, literacy, and social interaction between students. Kits included play props, printables and books based on various themes ie: restaurant, grocery store, science lab, veterinarian office, first responders, post office, etc. Teachers introduced themes by incorporating select themed titles during shared reading, as well as for independent and group reading activities. Teachers rotated themed kits on a weekly basis. Participating teachers worked with the school literacy coach and the school speech and language therapist as they planned and coordinated lessons. Professional development books were also purchased and the teaching teams participated in books studies and planning sessions to improve instructional practices.

Kindergarten students at Hobe Sound Elementary scored at 22% proficiency on their first iReady reading assessment in September. The project was introduced to classrooms the first week of October. Students were assessed using iReady again in December and showed a marked improved - 80% of this same group scored proficient on the iReady assessment. The group finished the year with 93% scoring proficient.

Project Summary The Education Foundation of Martin County supports robotics at the elementary, middle and high school level. This year, we supported the district-wide high school team, two elementary teams, and four middle school teams. Teachers and team coaches (certified teachers) were provided professional development training on how to best utilize the Lego Mindstorms robotics kits in and out of the classroom setting.

Students had the opportunity to build their STEAM skills, work with the EV3 Mindstorm Lego kits, learn the Core Values of the First Lego League and participate in competition style play. Students in grades 4-8 were introduced to robotics at a level that is challenging and fun. High school students were eligible to participate in the districtwide SPAM robotics team that includes students from all area high schools.

The Education Fund (Miami-Dade County) Food Forests for Schools

Project Summary The Education Fund's Food Forests for Schools (FFS) operates “hands-on outdoor labs” that increase students’ academic achievement, while encouraging students to pursue healthy lifestyles.

This groundbreaking, student-centered, seed-to-table curriculum program, which started with just five elementary schools, is now in 51 schools and continues to achieve success for Miami-Dade students.

Students and trained teachers collaborated in planting and harvesting edible plants and using the edible gardens and Food Forests as outdoor classrooms.

Students engaged in various science topics. They used the gardens and Food Forests to learn, and used skills such as observing, measuring, tracking, hypothesizing, predicting, and analyzing.

Teacher training was critical and occurred on and off-site. Teachers learned to develop and use cross-curricular lessons to increase student interest.

Students learned how percentages and other math concepts reflected real-life situations and were eager to demonstrate their understanding to friends and family. Creative discussion and writing recipes based on ingredients grown in the garden allowed children to learn concepts of measurement such as cups, teaspoons, and ounces, and it reinforced procedural concepts such as following steps in sequential order. The garden was used weekly to teach the plant life cycle, the scientific method, and other science concepts. Parents were encouraged to take part in the program by helping with the gardens and/or attending workshops on gardening and preparing healthy meals.

Project Summary Ideas with IMPACT, one of The Education Fund’s most successful programs, is a dynamic, district-wide network that helps teachers inspire student learning. Through Ideas with IMPACT, master teachers were able to share with thousands of other teachers their own innovative teacher-developed and teacher-tested ideas, projects, and strategies. Every Ideas with IMPACT project incorporated Florida Standards into its lesson plans. Through teacher-to-teacher communication and instruction as well as classroom support, tens of thousands of students benefited from lessons that were hands-on, relevant, thought provoking, and designed to foster academic success.

Ideas with IMPACT is not only uniquely teacher-driven, but it also remains the only system operating throughout MDCPS that allows the spread of proven ideas across all grades and all subjects. This distinction and its success as a professional development model in constant demand by teachers, have made The Education Fund’s Ideas with IMPACT a model for other districts throughout the U.S. In summary, Ideas with IMPACT solves some of the most intense challenges our teachers face today.

Ideas with IMPACT assisted teachers in improving teaching quality by showcasing, modeling, and encouraging the adaptation of proven strategies. Teachers returned to their classrooms with an arsenal of their colleagues’ ideas that worked to improve the learning environment. Students in MDCPS were the ultimate beneficiaries.

The Education Fund (Miami-Dade County) Ocean Bank Center for Educational Materials (OBCEM) Project Summary The Ocean Bank Center for Educational Materials (OBCEM) is a valuable resource program that benefits students throughout the district. The OBCEM aligns with Pillars III and V of the district strategic plan by supporting teachers and by developing partnerships with external stakeholders to strategically allocate funds and school materials, both of which help ensure that all students succeed. The Center is open year-round to the 18,000 teachers in 476 public schools; it contains the most basic classroom supplies - such as books, pens, paper, and notebooks. While the Center serves the entire district, its inventory of classroom supplies is especially critical to teachers who work in schools located in low-income neighborhoods with low performing schools. Many of the “regulars” who shop at the Center teach in elementary schools where students come to class without supplies. Having the supplies provided by the Center enables teachers and students to focus on classwork and learning, which leads to higher student performance.

Our goal for the 2018-2019 school year was to host a minimum of 1,600 teacher visits, thereby affecting a minimum of 120,000 students, with at least 50% of teachers reporting the program positively impacted their teaching experience. We significantly surpassed our goals, with 2,234 teacher visits, representing 167,550 students. A compilation of surveys taken during the 20182019 school year showed that 98% of the teachers who shopped at the Center reported that the materials received improved the quality of their instruction, hence meeting the goal of improving teaching quality. The same percentage also reported feeling more supported as a teacher and said the program improved their attitude toward teaching. Research shows that this leads to teacher retention.

The Education Fund (Miami-Dade County) Teach-A-Thon/Teacher Recruitment & Retention Initiatives Project Summary Teach-A-Thon is a program offered by The Education Fund to support retaining and recruiting quality teachers for the district. With a focus on the “Three R’s: Recruit, Retain, Reward” the constant goal remains to bring attention to the importance of recruiting the most qualified teachers, retaining teachers by implementing effective and innovative professional development and sharing of best practices, and rewarding and recognizing teachers for the important role they play.

The 2018-19 Teach-A-Thon began with a Kick-Off Party on October 1, 2018 where 212 business professionals, “Teacher Champions” (TCs), were able to connect with their mentor teachers. The TCs prepared for their day in a Miami-Dade classroom by taking part in training sessions with their assigned teachers/mentors. These teacher/mentors shared their expertise in lesson planning and classroom management, enabling the TCs to thrive during their day as classroom teachers. The interactions and activities also increased the level of respect for teachers and built bridges that reduced the isolation often cited as a reason for leaving the teaching profession.

Armed with the knowledge gained at the Kick-off and from their teacher role models, TCs started their advocacy by telling their colleagues, family, and friends what they had learned. One hundred TCs set up official Teach-A-Thon webpages to advocate support. By promoting their cause, these individuals widened the circle of support, and raised awareness and appreciation for quality teaching and its importance in improving student achievement.

Monroe County Education Foundation College & Career Readiness Initiative

Project Summary The College & Career Readiness Initiative prepared 300 Take Stock in Children scholars for middle and high school academic success and earning a high school diploma, as well as prepared the scholars for college entrance with a primary goal of degree attainment and career fulfillment. Via college success coach-led workshops, scholars learned skills to be successful in secondary education courses, how to choose the best courses and sequence, how to attain highest grade point average possible and score high marks on standardized tests, and how to be best prepared for postsecondary pathways whether that may be college, university, or a career technical education pathway.

To provide opportunities to learn, grow, and achieve, the Take Stock scholars who are lowincome, at-risk students who may otherwise not have the opportunity to enter college let alone be challenged to earn a high school diploma, participated in college and career readiness workshops and college visits. The college visits provide motivation and great impact as many of the scholars don't have the resources to make the trip to the mainland to visit a university or college campus. The mentors of the scholars were also invited to participate in the workshops and followed up with activities and conversations during subsequent mentor sessions. This college and career readiness project greatly impacted the 300 participants, their mentors, peers, teachers and parents.

Nassau Education Foundation Design, Build, Program - Let's Rumble!

Project Summary Students participating in robotics learn how to design, build and program robots. They also learn about collaboration and how to form solutions to real world problems. Guided by coaches and mentors, students developed STEM skills and practiced engineering principles. Nassau County started out with one FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) robotics team four years ago. That team has competed at a number of events each year with great success. Since that time, with the help of grant funds, the NCSD expanded robotics into all four high schools. FIRST Lego League teams were started in all four middle schools and in four elementary schools with one additional primary school working with Bee-Bots. The STEM/robotics clubs have grown at different rates at each school and every year there are more students interested in participating. Eliminating the requirement for new elementary programs to compete competitively allowed teachers to grow their programs, using more robots therefore allowing for more students to have hands on experience with robotics. In fact, this year the number of students participating increased from 66 to 147.

This year, Nassau Education Foundation (NEF) sponsored FLL professional development to help coaches and volunteers prepare for the robotics season and to teach potential new coaches how to get started by hiring a trainer from LEGO to spend a day with the teachers. Eleven teachers and volunteers participated. Participants learned how to program their robots to do a variety of tasks. They also competed against one another similar to a First Lego League scrimmage.

NEF provided all materials for new and existing robotics teams this year, including new robots, competition mats and materials. NEF also provided the registration fees for teams in the regional robotics league. NCSD participated by providing transportation for competitions, locations for professional development, practice, and scrimmages, and all coaches received a stipend for their after-school commitment.

Nassau Education Foundation Excellent Teaching Tool & Equitable Access Project Summary The Nassau Education Foundation (NEF) has partnered with the Nassau County School District (NCSD) to purchase and utilize BrainPOP software since 2015 and continued its use this year.

BrainPOP is a valuable teaching tool and teachers use it in all subject areas, including science, social studies, language, arts and math. Students can watch videos, take quizzes and use it independently or in groups. Teachers have been surveyed about their students’ use of BrainPOP and NEF learned that the overwhelming majority of teachers felt that BrainPOP was an effective teaching tool that they would like to continue using. BrainPOP has been available district wide and is used for all students.

In years past, most classes had one log in for BrainPOP that was used by all students in a class.

As a result, students were unable to log in to BrainPOP outside of the classroom and NEF was unable to collect individual student use data to see how many students and how often they were using the program. This year NEF requested that students have their own accounts so they could individually log in to BrainPOP to access it outside of school. This helps teachers of low performing students who need to reinforce their school lessons in another way. All teachers (730) in the district have access to BrainPOP. To implement the program, we purchased the district-wide software license from BrainPOP. At our request, the technology department added the log in to the individual student desktop accounts so that it can readily be accessed by the students . Teachers are able to evaluate the student's progress, as well as use the software to inform their individual, small-group and largegroup instruction in almost all subjects throughout the school year. NEF collected survey data from teachers to determine the impact of BrainPOP as a tool to aid in teaching. NEF also viewed log in data for students to further demonstrate that BrainPOP is an effective teaching tool.

Nassau Education Foundation Growing AgriTech in Nassau County!

Project Summary The Agricultural Technology Program at Hilliard Middle Senior High School was funded by the foundation three years ago and continues to grow. A new, very dynamic instructor started last year and has built the program up. The students planted vegetables and flowers. They also had chickens. In addition, they learned to use a number of farming tools including a tractor. Students learned employability skills that will help them beyond this program regardless of the career path they choose.

The teacher used funds for the chicken pens, gardens, animal feed and equipment. The teacher attended an FFA expo and was awarded other complementary grant funds. Overall, the program is very successful and is generating a lot of student interest. It is appealing to all types of students from students that are low performing in school to others who excel.

Last year there were 72 students enrolled in the program. This year there were 123 high school students and 84 middle school students enrolled in Ag Tech 1, 2, 3 and Horticulture.

We surpassed our expectation and the program grew by 30 high school students and added 84 middle school students. The middle school students will feed into the program in future years and will benefit from an established secondary program. Eight industry certifications were earned last year and we had a goal of 15 for this year. There were a total of 71 students that earned their industry certifications. That is an increase of 63 certifications. Earning these certifications is critical to the success of any career and technical education program because money is put back into the program for each certification earned. Also, the teacher explained that students at all performance levels succeeded in these classes therefore it also helps low performing students.

Okaloosa Public Schools Foundation Building Tomorrow's Workforce Today

Project Summary This project aimed to increase STEM related activities available to students, particularly by targeting rural schools and low income students, through a combination of educator grants, increased access to technology, specialized education, and robotics programs. Projects enhanced and extended opportunities available to elementary and middle schools students to apply STEM objectives in interactive and innovative projects. Students in five targeted elementary schools engaged in after-school robotics clubs and activities; students in three targeted schools were involved in competitions that focused on real-life applications through robotics. This project was used to establish competition robotics teams at six high school programs.

Funds were also used to purchase technology that enabled low-income students in a rural school to have access to online computer programs to expand their education opportunities.

Specifically, the program was used for teaching Safety Training, Construction and Carpentry Training, and Auto CAD to students in Construction Class.

Other grant funds were used to fund 24, $500 classroom grants to educators. These grants were individually designed by the classroom teachers to fill a variety of student needs and provided a greater measure of classroom satisfaction for the educator, leading to an incentive to remain employed in the school district.

Okeechobee Educational Foundation, Inc. Vocabulary – The Study of Words

Project Summary Students in the Okeechobee School System often struggle with learning new words. Teachers are encouraged to vary the approaches to teaching vocabulary - word walls, label items in the classroom and direct instruction are practices that are beneficial to students.

In order to support the effort of teachers, the Okeechobee Educational Foundation offered teachers in the district the opportunity to improve their knowledge of vocabulary instruction and improve the quality of vocabulary. Teachers of students Kindergarten through high school applied for a mini-grant valued at between $250 and $500.

These funds were used to purchase resources and materials to deliver vocabulary instruction that engaged students. Students were progress monitored on a scheduled basis to determine the success of the techniques and materials each teacher used.

Project Summary City Year Orlando's Whole School Whole Child model is based on human development research that shows the important role that consistent, productive and caring adult relationships play in a young person's life and school success, regardless of income. The nearpeer age and diversity of AmeriCorps volunteer mentors enable them to connect with and relate to the students they serve. A team of 10 AmeriCorps members were assigned to work at Judson B. Walker Middle School with the aim to benefit all students at the school. They trained together during August, before the school year began, and served in the school for the entire school year. City Year Orlando has designed research-based activities to help students in simple yet important ways that align with the district's goal of Intense Focus on Student Achievement and its focus areas of accelerating student achievement and narrowing achievement gaps.

Foundation for Orange County Public Schools Find Your Voice Mentoring Program

Project Summary "Find Your Voice" is a leadership and mentoring program designed specifically to help low-performing girls in middle and high school grades build self-esteem, resilience and grit. By offering three prongs of support - a teacher who moderates an after-school program, a mentor who is a successful woman from the surrounding community, and a small number of high-performing peers as fellow members of the program - participating students learn to express themselves with confidence, overcome obstacles, cope with challenges, and exercise better control of their own lives. Strengthening these abilities during middle school is critical to successfully navigating peer pressure and other challenges during high school and beyond. The program aligns directly with two district goals: Intense Focus on Student Achievement and its focus area of narrowing achievement gaps; and Safe Learning and Working Environments and its focus area of providing empowering environments.

Participating girls were identified and tiered based on the four Early Warning Indicators of attendance, behavior, coursework grades, and standardized testing results (FSA, district tests, and end-of-course exams). These four indicators were monitored throughout the school year for improvements. In addition, a small number of high-achieving students were selected to participate to serve as peer role models. Throughout the year, the girls learned and worked together on monthly themes with their teacher moderator, and selected a community issue they wanted to address together via a service learning project in the spring. They examined different renowned leaders' strategies and styles to gain personal insight, and engage in interactive exercises and small-group discussion. They also met at least once a week with an adult mentor from the community, with a focus on exploring career options.

Foundation for Orange County Public Schools OCPS Internship Program

Project Summary Career readiness is a crucial educational component, yet students often don't have access to opportunities designed to teach job skills in a real-world, paid work environment. The OCPS Internship Program enables students to put into practice what they've learned through OCPS Career Academies. The benefits of internships go beyond learning job skills: internships boost student confidence, increase motivation, highlight strengths, cultivate positive work habits, and develop postsecondary career and education goals.

The OCPS Internship Program partners with Central Florida businesses and nonprofit organizations to provide students with hands-on experiences with local employers. In addition to the direct benefits to participating students, the program also gives participating businesses and nonprofits the opportunity to develop and shape qualified employees for local opportunities.

This project pays $1,500 stipends to qualified students working 150 hours in the summer before their senior year. Juniors enroll in a summer course; the course instructor supervises and monitors student progress throughout the internship. Students must complete and present an internship portfolio, submit timecards, and participate in employer evaluations.

Students interested in pursuing finance, IT, hospitality/tourism or nonprofit career paths submit an application online in the spring. All students have participated in the Career Academy for at least three years, have completed job readiness training, and have earned at least one industry certification. The internship coordinator, a member of the OCPS Instructional Support team, reviews all applications and interviews potential candidates. Applications of selected candidates are submitted to vetted businesses and nonprofits for consideration. Interns interview with potential employers and final selections are made by the hiring companies and nonprofits toward the end of the school year.

Foundation for Orange County Public Schools Read2Succeed Project Summary Read2Succeed is part of the district's and the Foundation's overall strategy to improve literacy through supplemental reading programs targeting some of the district's lowest performers. This program focuses on building vocabulary with at-risk first graders, reading fluency skills with low-performing second graders, and reading comprehension for retained third graders throughout the county.

Read2Succeed volunteers and reading assistants provide weekly reading assistance and tutoring to low- to mid-level readers.

The First Grade Vocabulary Program utilizes a simple step-by-step process designed to improve students' vocabulary and background knowledge in face-to-face, once-a-week sessions over a 30-week period. Students are identified by their teacher or reading coach as struggling with early vocabulary acquisition and needing additional background knowledge.

The Second Grade Fluency Program uses a research-based program, Six-Minute Solution, that builds the ability to read accurately, quickly and with expression through interactive peer-topeer repeated readings of high-interest, targeted passages.

The Third Grade Comprehension Program utilizes certified teachers to tutor retained third graders. They meet with students in pairs twice a week for 40 minutes each session, utilizing The Comprehension Toolkit, which contains 26 strategy lessons. Students learn how to: connect known information to new information; clarify and question when new information is unclear; distill main ideas; summarize; use context clues to infer meaning; and develop insight and enhance understanding of the text. Students take the stories home for additional practice.

Foundation for Orange County Public Schools Teacher Impact Grants Project Summary Teacher Impact Grants for math, science, energy education, and STEM partnerships offer a maximum of $5,000 in funding to K-12 teachers for equipment and/or materials that directly impact classroom learning, increasing students' interest and understanding of science, mathematics, and energy education.

Florida State Standards mandate that students develop "inquirybased" skills in math and science. Classroom activities require that students design their own scientific and mathematical investigations, manipulate variables, and analyze data using highorder thinking to reach logical conclusions. Budget cuts make it hard for classroom teachers to meet these standards. The limited funds classroom teachers do receive are used to purchase consumable materials and are often not sufficient to cover the costs of replacing old, outdated equipment or purchasing additional equipment. Students cannot adequately learn scientific or mathematical principles without the proper tools to truly grasp the concepts or the equipment for hands-on, experiential learning.

Teachers can apply during the summer before the school year begins in one of four areas: math, science, energy education, or STEM partnerships. Grant proposals in the STEM Partnership category must outline a project where students solve a problem in conjunction with an external business partner who provides a minimum of 20 on-site contact hours working with students and/or teachers.

Education Foundation for Osceola County Readers to Leaders Project Summary The Readers to Leaders program supports the district in its strategy of ensuring high levels of learning for all students in literacy. Specifically, this program exposes children to literacy concepts/skills before they even start formal schooling, and then meets the needs of struggling third graders who are about to take the FSA for the first time and are expected to not pass.

The beginnings of our Readers to Leaders program came with the inception of Bookmark Buddies, an evidence-based literacy program designed to improve the reading comprehension skills of Osceola County third graders who are considered "at-risk" of not passing the FSA and subsequently face retention. For over 15 years, Bookmark Buddies has sought to serve low-performing third-grade students who read at least 1/2 year to 1 1/2 years behind grade level. The program targets students who are at risk of scoring a level 1 on the Florida Standards Assessment. These students are then matched with a trained volunteer mentor who meet with the child weekly at the child's school. Over the course of the year, student and mentor read carefully selected reading materials tailored specifically to the child's current reading level. While very skills-focused, Bookmark Buddies also emphasizes the power of relationship, and seeks to foster a lifelong affection for reading in the heart of the student. For many struggling students, meeting with their Bookmark Buddy is the highlight of their week at school. It is a time when they can feel empowered and can meet with a caring mentor who is invested not only in their progress academically, but in their lives themselves. The mentor helps students improve basic reading and comprehension skills needed to become independent readers while providing a motivating and intentional environment.

Students are able to take reading materials used in Bookmark Buddies sessions home, and mentors encourage students to read with their families - offering an avenue for a school-tohome connection that may be lacking.

Currently operating in 26 schools in the county, and seeking to serve the final 27th elementary school in this school year, Bookmark Buddies engages with approximately 500 struggling students each year. These students are served by approximately 350 community mentors.

Education Foundation for Osceola County Supplies for Success: A Gift For Teaching Store Project Summary The Osceola A Gift For Teaching store (AGFT) is one of the longest running teacher free stores in the state and a fundamental part of Osceola education since it first opened its doors in February of 2004. Since that time, the store has served to: offer direct support to district teachers, relieving their financial burden by reducing out-of-pocket expenses; increase community engagement and awareness, as well as offer opportunities for volunteers to get involved; offer a convenient central location for donors to drop off goods and teachers to pick them up; and provide supplies proven necessary to student success in the classroom, at no cost to the teachers.

The AGFT store guarantees that no matter when a teacher visits, the essentials (paper, pencils, crayons, glue, etc.) will be in stock. Teachers shopping in our store will find a wide selection of personal hygiene items, backpacks and even small plush critters to offer as incentives to their students. Many students who do not have the financial means to secure school supplies on their own are also struggling in other ways that may lead to a distracted or unproductive mindset during the school day and to an overall lack of confidence/self-esteem that negatively affects their ability to succeed in school. The store also offers some unconventional products that teachers have found ways to get creative with, dreaming up projects that have gotten students engaged in the learning process in new ways.

Education Foundation of Palm Beach County Charging Forward with Multisensory Strategies Project Summary In collaboration with the University of Central Florida's (UCF) Morgridge International Reading Center, the School District of Palm Beach County has trained district administrators and teachers in research-based instructional strategies that has developed the capacity of teachers to impact their instruction. These district administrators, with the support of UCF’s staff, trained additional teachers in four pilot elementary schools in research-based multisensory instructional strategies which were used to improve students’ reading proficiency in primary grades with language-based learning disabilities, including students with characteristics of dyslexia, by increasing the strategies and approaches used by teachers to address the needs of their students. Students learn in a variety of ways, with preferences and areas of development across the spectrum of visual, auditory and kinesthetic learning. Multisensory instruction allows the teacher to activate all three types of learning at once, so all students in the classroom can access the instruction in the way that is best for them. Multisensory instruction allows teachers to work “smarter, not harder”, often eliminating the need for reteaching. Multisensory instruction also results in greater student engagement, participation and mastery of new concepts.

All first-grade teachers received a 3-day, in-person training in January of 2019. First grade teachers in the new cohort gained knowledge and an increased understanding of multisensory strategies. In addition, teachers learned how these research-based strategies can be incorporated into their core instruction. Teachers had the opportunity to plan and practice the new strategies with coaching and support from the District Team. Teachers received a “toolbox” with necessary materials needed to implement the multisensory strategies during core instruction. Additionally, teachers who participate in the pilot received ongoing support and coaching on the implementation of multisensory strategies within their instruction.

Education Foundation of Palm Beach County Closing the Achievement Gap with AVID

Project Summary The AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. AVID College Readiness System in Palm Beach County Schools expanded from 51 schools in the 2017- 2018 school year to 57 schools in the 2018-2019 school year, through a combination of School District Matching Grant, School District of Palm Beach County, and private donor funding.

All 57 schools adopted the AVID program and established systems that support governance, curriculum & instruction, data collection & analysis, professional learning, and student & parent outreach to ensure college and career readiness. AVID Elementary is used with a school-wide approach and sets the foundation for the structures and skills necessary to be successful at the secondary level and beyond for all students. At the secondary level, the AVID Elective course targets students in the academic middle (B, C, and even D students) who aspire to go to college and who demonstrate perseverance and determination to be successful. Typically, they are the first in their families to attend college and often come from traditionally underrepresented groups. With the support of the AVID Elective course, AVID students were able to demonstrate their ability to excel in accelerated coursework.

With support from the Education Foundation of Palm Beach County and AVID, Conniston Middle School was recognized as the first National Demonstration school in Southeast Florida.

Conniston passed the rigorous certification process by showing high levels of fidelity in the implementation of the AVID College Readiness System school-wide. This year, Conniston Middle was supported with extra funding for tutor allocations and teacher training which was critical to the national demonstration certification process. In total this year, over 700 teachers, administrators, and staff were trained, and directly impacted 12,173 students in the AVID Elementary classes and in the AVID Elective courses. As a result of the early stages of AVID’s new school-wide approach, the program indirectly impacted over 74,193 students district-wide.

Project Summary The Education Foundation of Palm Beach County (EFPBC) awarded nearly $60,000 in funding to support approximately 62 direct-to-classroom or GoTeach! Classroom Grants this year through a competitive application process. The desire from teachers to bring creative, fun and challenging learning experiences into the classroom required the Foundation to expand its program and grow funding for classroom grants through the School District Matching Grant Program. In 2017-2018, the Education Foundation of Palm Beach County awarded $41,897 in funding to projects delivering high impact learning to students. The Education Foundation of Palm Beach County GoTeach! Classroom Grants encourage educators to create innovative and exciting educational opportunities for their students. GoTeach! Grants focus on these priority areas: Literacy, Career Education and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics). The typical GoTeach! Grant ranges from $225.00 - $775.00 for individual teacher proposals to $1,275.00 for team proposals. Once the grant application is submitted, it is reviewed by the Education Foundation’s board members and other community leaders. Classroom grants are awarded in the fall at an awards ceremony and grantees are required to submit results, photos and a summary of how the funds were used at the end of the school year.

Education Foundation of Palm Beach County Healthcare Innovation Project

Project Summary This project was directly aligned with EFPBC's focus on career education in producing a diverse, competent workforce with skilled and certified/licensed healthcare providers in critical shortage areas. In addition, the program's participating schools were all Title I Schools in desperate need of help and support.

Funds were used to purchase durable medical Juno Advanced Patient Clinical Skills Simulators to train students and to give them the required practical skills in patient care. Students were able to properly use the simulator while maintaining patient safety and interpret results for a clinical diagnosis. Impacting over 4,500 students and 39 teachers in 13 schools, the simulators helped students meet the required clinical hours of the medical curriculum. Students conducted simulations, operated equipment and reached competency prior to clinical rotations in medical facilities where direct patient care was required. Students were trained by their medical teachers who were all trained in how to utilize the simulators and curriculum. Teachers reported based on preliminary results, 99% of participating students took and passed an industry certification exam. However, official scores will not be released by the State until September of 2019. The industry certification exams students participated in included; Emergency Medical Responder, Certified Medical Administrative Assistant, Certified EKG Technician, Patient Care Technician, Certified Pharmacy Technician, Certified Nursing Assistant, and Certified Personal Trainer. In addition, several students have secured employment at healthcare facilities including Walgreens, CVS, doctor’s offices and local hospitals and clinics.

Education Foundation of Palm Beach County Red Apple Supplies Project Summary The Education Foundation of Palm Beach County (EFPBC) has successfully completed its third full year of operating Red Apple Supplies (RAS), serving Palm Beach County's (PBC) public schools.

This resource store provides teachers free supplies throughout the school year for their economically disadvantaged students attending schools designated as Title 1.

In January, 2019, RAS was recognized as a Full Affiliate with the Kids in Need Foundation. The Kids In Need Foundation’s mission is to ensure that every child is prepared to learn and succeed in the classroom by providing free school supplies nationally to students most in need. By being a part of their national network, RAS is able to get school supplies for FREE and pay only for the shipping. We are thrilled about this partnership and the opportunities it provides our teachers and students. This partnership allows us to spend less on product and shift funding to staffing to keep up with the enormous growth of this program and the tremendous need throughout the district.

Education Foundation of Palm Beach County Rocket Powered Robotics!

Project Summary This grant supports robotics teams competing in the FIRST Lego League (FLL) and First Robotics Competition programs in Palm Beach County. This program produced champion design teams rooted in the disciplines of STEM education and targeted support to students attending seven high schools and two middle schools.

The goal of this program was to provide student access to robotics education that stimulates knowledge and develops critical thinking skills centered on principles of technology and engineering by customized for students by working cooperatively as a team to problem-solve and compete at competitions, increasing students interest in pursuing postsecondary education and a career in STEM. This program was successful as evidenced by students and teams' performance in competitions and student’s post-season participation survey data. Each team had coaches and mentors who volunteered their time to help students learn coding, programming and other STEM related concepts that helped them have a successful season as well as be exposed to professionals in various STEM careers. Students also learned the value of skills such as cooperation and problem-solving that professional volunteers shared would be helpful to students in the classroom and beyond.

Education Foundation of Palm Beach County Stepping Up STEM at Pahokee Project Summary This program supported STEM education curriculum at Pahokee Middle School which was designated as a 4-year Discovery STEM pilot school. By adding Environmental and Marine Science courses (and enhancing existing Robotics and Computer Programming course curriculum and experiential learning opportunities both on and off campus) the instructional rigor and relevance has increased for students. Students were prepared to critically address sciencerelated societal, economic and environmental issues as a result.

These experiences and changes in curriculum allowed students the opportunity to develop a sense of scientific inquiry as they were exposed to a wide variety of careers related to science, technology and the environment. Ultimately preparing students for the higher-level STEM courses they would encounter in high school.

Students participated in Computer Programming and Robotics courses using LEGO Mindstorms EV3 robots which directly correlated to the success of the afterschool First Lego League Robotics Competition Team. The information learned in class helped students excel in their afterschool robotics club.

Adding Environmental and Marine Science Courses allowed students the opportunity to work on experiential and inquiry-based learning projects and partnering with guest speakers who presented varied topics such as water treatment, contamination and conservation, global positioning, ecology, water chemistry, waves, marine microbes and marine life. A student organization from Florida Atlantic University also joined the STEM teachers in the classroom to enhance the curriculum by engaging students in the program STEM projects and challenges.

Pasco Education Foundation #PASCOTOGETHER – Providing a World Class Education Project Summary The Pasco Education Foundation provides student learning experiences that matched the rigor of Florida standards through awarding of grants for innovative classroom projects and teacher professional development. This year 22 grants totaling $93,688.04 were matched to STEM projects, professional development, and individual classroom and teacher grants.

Preparing students for the workforce requires STEM teachers to be on the forefront, learning the software and curriculum their students will need to fill future jobs. This project afforded teachers opportunities to bring state of the art resources to the classroom that makes learning more meaningful and engaging through applied, student-centered approaches. Teachers were able to build their knowledge around instruction and leadership, as well as prepare them to support and build the knowledge of new and future teachers. These teachers all participated in valuable professional development that was relevant and responsive to the needs of their students with a focus on productive and immediate impact on their skills, engagement, growth, and success. Additional funds supported projects implemented by teachers and support staff which provided students with a learning environment that offered the necessary resources, materials, and guidance to supplement core curriculum. Pinellas Education Foundation Strengthening Multiple Pathways for Students Project Summary This project supported our district’s mission for career and college readiness while also engaging local businesses and community volunteers. Goals and outcomes included increasing participation in Next Generation Tech and Entrepreneur programs, which was achieved, along with an increase in participation in our Future Plans career assessment tool. We also sought new ways to engage students in career exploration by developing a Career Awareness Leadership program.

Students participating in Next Generation Tech attend a workshop once per month to learn about the software development life cycle. During the workshops, students worked alongside business mentors while completing the phases of the software development process including developing their idea, customer analysis, designing, building, testing and launching their product/software.

Students participating in Next Generation Entrepreneurs came up with an idea, conducted customer analysis, created a value proposition and proof of concept and analyzed the market.

Once they completed these steps, students prepared a business model and product pitch. Once a week, students watched a video interview of a local entrepreneur or business professional that addressed the topic of the week.

Future Plans is a web-based platform that assesses students' aptitude, interest and skill levels and provides a correlated list of in-demand jobs tailored to student's results.

In the Career Awareness Leadership Forum, students (sophomores and juniors), administrators and teachers worked closely with business partner Duke Energy to learn over 4½ day sessions, about all of the workforce opportunities available upon graduation from high school. This program provided a lens for students to better understand the need for certifications, as well as the need for post-secondary education and training.

Polk Education Foundation Free Teacher Market Project Summary The Free Teacher Market serves Polk public and charter school teachers by giving them a place to “shop” free of charge, for student and classroom supplies. The Market is stocked with donations of new and gently used items from the community and is open during the school year. Cash donations are primarily needed to replenish popular items, such as basic school supplies which tend to run out quickly. Funding also allows the purchase of desirable teaching manipulatives used to enhance instruction and engage students.

Materials available in the Free Teacher Market provide the supplies students need to be successful and to minimize the amount of money teachers spend out of their own pockets.

The Market was open in August, two months earlier than in previous years. There were 27 openings from August through May. There was a very large number of new teachers entering Polk. These teachers completed TIPS training acclimating to the district. As part of this process, PEF hosted multiple openings for TIPS trainees. As part of the district’s strategic plan to recruit and retain highly effective teachers, PEF invited each of the TIPS participants to shop in the market. TIPS trainings are heavy over the summer months and continue through March of the school year. Preference to the TIPS completers continued through out the year to align with and support the district’s plan of recruiting and retaining teachers.

Project Summary Polk Reads serves struggling Kindergarten thru third grade students who have been determined by their teacher to be at least one grade level below in reading. This directly correlates with the district’s goal of "preparing all students to meet or exceed grade level proficiency”. Students selected for tutoring should not be in any other supplemental service program. The classroom teacher and the tutor work collaboratively on which reading skills need extra attention and the strategies to best help individual students learn.

Tutoring is done during the school day, in the child's normal block of reading instruction, so they do not miss instruction on other subjects.

Students have a pretest to determine what level in our curriculum they will start in, then are assessed every 4-5 weeks to gauge progress and lessons adjusted if needed to best help the student succeed. Tutors serve students the entire school year. Assessments are done using materials in the Rigby curriculum and data is also collected from the school district using STAR data for Kindergarten thru second grades and FSA for third grade. If a student reaches their grade level goals and the teacher agrees the child will continue successfully without further tutoring, they are exited from the program and replaced by another child with reading needs.

Most students spend the entire school year in the program. Polk County is a very transient county so there is flux in program participants. When gathering data to measure progress, all students are regularly assessed, but data from those served consistently for at least 15 weeks is used by the program as end of the year data.

Polk Education Foundation School Matching Grant

Project Summary While promoting and establishing proactive partnerships between the community and the school system is a vital part of our mission, we encourage schools to reach out to their local community and leverage funds from their business partners with the potential of a dollar for dollar financial match through our School District Matching Grant program. Combined funds were used to meet the educational goals and initiatives defined in each school's submitted program. The focus areas of career/technical education, increasing graduation rates, literacy, low performing students, STEM education and/or teaching quality are integral to the success of this grant program. By incorporating the community in funding these projects, long-standing relationships with the business community and local schools will continue after this program is over. Providing materials, supplies, technology and other services to students allowed teachers a greater opportunity to engage students and provide opportunities for students to maximize their learning opportunity and show academic growth. This year, ten projects/schools were funded, directly impacting 150 teacher and 4,105 students of which 1,381 were considered low-performing.

Polk Education Foundation STEaMing Up Polk!

Project Summary The Steaming Up Polk Grant supported school efforts to purchase materials and technology to increase student achievement in the area of STEM education. A few schools used funds to provide professional development to teachers or onsite field trips to enhance student learning around a STEM topic. Twenty-three grants were awarded to 19 schools, impacting 2,857 students.

Grants were diverse in implementation, from science labs to Florida ecosystem to developing business models to understanding green technologies.

There was also a STEAM Team grant to support three low-performing schools in math or science. Materials were purchased to support different grade levels in hands-on interactive STEAM activities throughout the school year. Students dissected owl pellets, learned the Japanese art of Gyotaku while discovering fish diversity, anatomy, and ecology, and engaged in a series of engineering design challenges to build creativity and problem-solving skills.

Polk Education Foundation Teacher to Teacher Connection

Project Summary Teacher to Teacher Connection is a networking mini-grant program for prekindergarten through eighth grade public and charter school teachers in Polk and Hardee Counties. This program was developed to recognize and reward successful innovative teaching practices.

Grant money is available in two phases: the Developer phase and the Adapter phase. Developers, who have successfully implemented their innovative ideas, create a detailed program package which is then published electronically in the online IDEA Catalog of Excellence. Current year Developers join with select past Developers to share their innovative practices with other teachers at an IDEA Expo. Through the Adapter phase, teachers visiting the Idea Expo have the opportunity to network and gain exposure to quality teaching strategies. These teachers can apply for an Adapter Grant to replicate one of the innovative programs showcased in the Teacher to Teacher Connection.

Both grant phases provide funds for the teacher or school to purchase implementation materials designed to increase student achievement. All grant programs focus on literacy, supporting low performing students, and/or STEM instruction.

The last several years have shown Reading as a priority. 48% of the T2T grants focused on literacy, while 18% focused on supporting low performing students and 34% focused on STEM instruction. By rewarding best practices in the classroom, we are ensuring that teachers who are working with students have the best resources and knowledge available.

Lift Putnam, Inc. Lift Putnam

Project Summary Beginning in 2016, Lift Putnam worked with the Putnam County School Board to develop a plan to fund the enrollment of four year old children in a full-day pre-k program. These are children from families who are unable to afford the full-day program. Much research is available to show the effectiveness of a full-day program for all children, but especially those children from homes where, for whatever reason, kindergarten prep is not available. The cost of the full-day, full-year pre-k experience is approximately $180 per month for those families that can afford it, however most Putnam County families cannot. Lift Putnam's funding is used to supplement what they can pay, if any, and make it affordable to those who need it the most.

The opportunity is advertised throughout our schools. Elementary school staff get information to families from their school's community. The family completes an application and these applications are reviewed by Lift Putnam and Putnam County Pre-K staff.

This is the third year of the program. Our first students are now second graders and next year in the third grade will be part of the group taking the state's standardized third grade reading tests. We already know that kindergarten readiness for these students has improved. Ultimately our goal is to enroll every needy child so they will all be better prepared for Kindergarten and later school years. By giving more children the "extra year of school", they will be better prepared for kindergarten, later third grade standardized reading tests and improved graduation rates.

Santa Rosa Education Foundation Strengthening Education in Santa Rosa County

Project Summary This project's goal was to support teacher recruitment and retention activities per district strategic plan efforts. These activities included teacher classroom grants and recognition events.

In support of district teachers, SREF presented all teachers with the opportunity to apply for grants through our Teacher Grants program. Only classroom grant applications that showed evidence of alignment with school improvement plans and/or district, state, and national standards were reviewed with the top grant projects being fully funded. The SREF Teacher Grant application required teachers to list each standard that tied to their project submission. If this was not included, the application was not eligible for acceptance. Student engagement in meaningful hands-on activities which captured students' attention and increased student achievement were considered strongly in the selection of funded grants. Inclusion of the arts, literacy, career or technical education, and STEM in all curriculum areas helped provide support for all students. Grants that supported increased learning and/or daily function of special needs students were also considered for funding.

Education Foundation of Sarasota County College, Career and Life Readiness Initiative

Project Summary The CCLR Initiative is a multi-year project that is research based for long-term, evidence-driven impact in creating a college and career readiness culture. Funds provided through this grant supported the implementation and identification of baselines that will be expanded and more fully developed in coming years. In the 2018-19 school year, which was the first year of a multi-year plan, the EFSC had two goals and met both: 1) Confirm proof of concept and Naviance’s curriculum impact on students’ college and career readiness in the second year of implementation in district middle schools. 2) Launch Naviance in two pilot high schools in conjunction with the opening of Students Success Centers, staffed by dedicated EFSC College Career Advisors, with a focus on students graduating with purpose and prepared to pursue a postsecondary pathway that leads to technical certificate, college degree or credential required for a chosen career.

In Student Success Centers, advisors provide students and teachers hands-on support for exploring college and career opportunities and assistance with college applications, scholarships and financial aid, financial literacy, resumé and college essay writing, and hosting or conducting numerous workshops for students, parents, teachers and guidance counselors. The centers also focus on important life skills including interview preparedness and social-emotional learning and skills development, such as coping with stress before exams and job interviews.

In addition to access to full-time college-career advisors, students are taking advantage of resources available at the centers including self-directed navigational tools, an online and book reference library on college and career exploration, and a comprehensive website (LaunchYourPlan.com) created by the EFSC to serve as a hub for information on local community scholarships, college exam and financial aid timelines, and other pertinent information.

Foundation for Seminole County Public Schools Aviation Academy

Project Summary The Aviation Academy at Seminole High School prepares students for a career in aviation maintenance through a combination of classroom and hands-on learning. SCPS has designed the academy to teach students the skills that correspond with the FAA Ground Certification. Each year students take classes that match with the training levels needed for the certification: 9th – Private Pilot Ground School, 10th – Aviation Maintenance General 1, 11th- Aviation Maintenance General 2, 12th – Aviation Maintenance General 3.

During this pilot year, the Aviation Academy had 75 students enrolled with three seniors eligible to take their FAA test. Additionally, SCPS procured a small prop plane and a helicopter for students to work on and gain practical knowledge of the systems they will encounter as Aviation Technicians. Both aircraft are housed at Seminole HS, so students are able to perform their tasks on-site. Students have also had the opportunity this year to visit Allegiant Air to meet with current Aviation Technicians and learn about their career.

As we are always refining and improving our projects, SCPS is planning to add an avionics component to the Aviation Academy, which will give our students even more exposure to the skills needed in their future careers. Expanding to teach avionics at the academy also means that the program will be growing in size based on students and will add one additional teacher next year. Our current Aviation teacher has attended professional development training at the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association’s annual conference to ensure that he is meeting our student’s educational needs, and responding to the trends within the industry.

Foundation for Seminole County Public Schools Grants for Great Ideas

Project Summary Grants to classrooms are meant to bolster the current curriculum while exposing students to opportunities, technologies, and resources that may not have been available through the teacher’s own budget. The Grants for Great Ideas program offers educators three opportunities to apply for classroom, grade-level, or schoolwide STEM, Literacy and Arts grants, which range from $500 to $1,500. Teachers develop their own proposals, which are then scored and awarded based on a selection committee comprised of community volunteers, school board members, Foundation board members and SCPS staff.

Projects must demonstrate academic relevance and a sound implementation plan; they must also have in place a formal evaluation. The 2018-19 Grants for Great Ideas program issued 55 grants totaling $69,220.00 in STEM, literacy, and arts categories.

Foundation for Seminole County Public Schools Mudwalk to Environmental Education Project Summary At the Environmental Studies Center (ESC), 3rd and 5th grade students have the opportunity to get hands-on, and muddy, with Florida’s natural world. This program is structured as a 1 or 2-day field trip, which includes a dry (indoor) day and a wet (outdoor) day – commonly referred to as the Mud Walk. The Mud Walk and the dry day aim to increase habitat knowledge, create an awareness of the fragility of the environment, and increase understanding of the community’s need for healthy natural environments. Students are meant to learn about these topics in order to become better stewards of our community’s natural resources.

While addressing environmental education, these programs reinforce scientific learning through hands-on, inquiry-based exploration. During a single trip, students can simultaneously see the interconnectedness of eight habitats and the uniqueness of each. The outdoor component is preceded by an introductory session in the Center’s Natural History Museum where students learn about the native and non-native plant and animal species in a hands-on workshop that includes holding a snake, petting an alligator, and meeting Otus the Eastern Screech Owl. Third grade students participate in a one-day program of awareness and introductory investigations while fifth graders participate in the two-day dry and wet habitat exploration. The wet day involves working collaboratively as a group to traverse muddy wetlands that would pose a problem for a single explorer.

Foundation for Seminole County Public Schools Shadow for Success

Project Summary Seminole County Public Schools (SCPS) Shadow for Success initiative provides the opportunity for students in 9th and 10th grade to participate in a comprehensive job shadowing and career education experience in partnership with local employers. The logistics and activities for this program began with identifying and recruiting at least 20 local employers to provide a job shadow experience for approximately 287 unique high school students.

This year, 20 employers from various industries participated in this project and allowed students to learn from their employees, while also becoming familiar with what the day-to-day of any job actually looks like. SCPS ePathways worked directly with the high schools to refine existing curriculum for the career education component of this project.

The ePathways department facilitated two lessons before the start of the program to ensure that students understand the basic skills they’ll need to hone and pay attention to throughout the job shadowing experience. In order to reach all 287 of our students, and provide equitable access, trainings were held at the high schools, and then transportation to the job-site was provided for students on the day of the shadowing visit.

Foundation for Seminole County Public Schools Take Stock in Children Seminole

Project Summary The Foundation for Seminole County Public Schools (FSCPS) operates Take Stock in Children-Seminole (TSIC). This program focuses on youth development and mentoring and is part of a statewide initiative funded partially by the Florida Department of Education. Participating students come from different schools and backgrounds, but all qualify for free or reduced lunch, have succeeded academically, and are considered by their teachers to have college potential. Selected students are expected to meet with their mentors each week for all four years of high school, maintain at least a 2.5 GPA, have zero disciplinary issues, and maintain a strong record of attendance each year. Students who successfully complete the programs requirements are awarded a 2year college scholarship paid for by FSCPS. This year, TSIC-Seminole continued to build the program by offering a number of reimagined workshops that are better oriented toward serving our students. We worked with partners from Seminole State College, Wells Fargo, the Kennedy Space Center/NASA, and many other local businesses to deliver 19 workshops that teach our students about the topics that will impact them the most, such as: correctly filing their FAFSA, finding scholarships, financial literacy, and career planning and exploration.

Along with mentor visits, college success coaching, and workshops, students also had the opportunity to attend college tours this year. Along with program supervisors and chaperones, 78 students attended a college tour at either USF/New College or UF/UNF. Foundation for Seminole County Public Schools Tools 4 Seminole Schools

Project Summary Tools 4 Seminole Schools (T4SS), Seminole County’s free school supply store, distributes classroom materials and other basic goods to teachers in order to better meet their students’ needs. More than 54% of students in Seminole, over 35,000, participate in the free and reduced lunch program offered through the district. Many of these students receive supplies directly from their teachers, who regularly spend between $250 – $500 per year on their classrooms in Seminole County. By having a space for schools to receive free supplies, T4SS helps alleviate the excess financial burden placed on teachers and parents throughout the academic year.

During the school year, T4SS is open every Tuesday and Wednesday from 1:00 – 6:00PM, and on the last Saturday of every month from 9:00AM – 2:00PM. Every school in the district is eligible to shop with T4SS. This school year, T4SS distributed $1.65M in school supplies to teachers and students in need. This dollar amount includes: over 250k pencils, 19k books, 19k bottles of glue, and over 12k spiral notebooks. In order to give out all of this supplies, the two full-time employees with T4SS were assisted by a team of dedicated volunteers that gave 2,272 volunteer hours back to the store.

Investing In Kids (St. Johns County) Carlisle IT and St. Johns Technical High School Manufacturing Internship and Career Programs Project Summary The Carlisle IT Manufacturing Internship Program gives students the opportunity to experience real world manufacturing first hand and gives Carlisle IT a vehicle to preview potential employees.

For SJTHS, interns not only learn the various aspects of manufacturing technologies through hands-on, industry relevant training but also gain valuable workplace skills that will serve them for life. The ultimate goal is to provide our students with opportunities to break the cycle of poverty by being prepared for higher wage and higher skilled jobs. Students must maintain good academic standings and be of good character to continue in the internship.

Student interns traveled to Carlisle IT each Wednesday afternoon from 1:00-3:30 p.m. Once the students completed Tier 1 and 2 (the employee orientation and safety portion of the internship), they were background checked and submitted a drug screening test. Since the students become employees of Carlisle in Tier 3, they must follow the Carlisle new hiring procedures. In Tier 3, the students work on the manufacturing floor one-on-one with Carlisle mentors who educate the interns about the different manufacturing processes. The interns received four-week rotations on the manufacturing floor in Tier 3.

The Carlisle Manufacturing Internship had a successful hiring class with two seniors receiving job offers from Carlisle. In addition, eight underclassmen who participated in the program were offered paid summer internships at Carlisle. The students entered the program without any knowledge of Carlisle nor manufacturing. After participating in the internship over the year, the students overwhelmingly expressed desire to work in a STEM career at Carlisle after graduation.

Investing In Kids (St. Johns County) FLY

Project Summary The Five Learning Years (FLY) project has one main goal: to ensure every student has the assistance he/she needs to be prepared for school, regardless of socio-economic circumstances. In two zip codes of St. Johns County, less than 50% of students are ready for school. Students are screened in pre-kindergarten and kindergarten using the Get Ready to Read (GRTR) Screening Tool and students scoring in the bottom 60th percentile are referred to our program. These students are placed in small groups of four with an experienced FLY teacher who uses the Nemours BrightStart! Early Literacy curriculum to work with the students twice a week. Students are then screened at the completion of the intervention in the Spring to measure growth. These results are then compared to students who never required intervention to see if the gap between the two groups is closer or closed.

The curriculum used by the FLY program incorporates every style of learning in each lesson and is also an early detector for dyslexia. The pre-kindergarten curriculum is 20 lessons, while kindergarten is 36 lessons. For the fifth year in a row, students have shown tremendous growth, with pre-kindergarten intervention students improving by 100% on GRTR and Kindergarten students improving by 44% on GRTR, 236% on letter identification and 820% on letter sounds. Most importantly, the gap was greatly reduced in both groups when compared to students never requiring intervention. In pre-k, the gap was reduced from five points to just one on GRTR. In kindergarten, on GRTR, the gap was reduced from four points to one point.

Kindergarteners are also screened in letter knowledge. On letter identification the gap between groups was reduced from 18 points to two points. On the letter sound screening, the gap was reduced from 11 points to five points. With exemplary, consistent results like these each year, there is no doubt that early literacy intervention is the key to creating successful students.

Investing In Kids (St. Johns County) Fund a Project

Project Summary At INK!'s 2018 annual meeting the Superintendent for the St. Johns County School District emphasized that teachers need to feel valued and appreciated. One way INK! lends support for this need is to continue providing educators with funding to enhance classroom learning. Three of INK!'s business partners also support the initiative by providing resources for classroom innovation.

Teachers have the flexibility to augment academic achievement that is engaging for all. Since every student learns differently, an added resource selected specifically to the subject matter is beneficial for the teacher and student. Fund a Project teacher requests ranged from classroom manipulatives to components for robotics to professional development. Teachers completed a grant application outlining the details of their request and each request was evaluated to determine if it qualified for funding.

Investing In Kids (St. Johns County) Tools 4 Schools

Project Summary The Tools 4 Schools program aligns with the St. Johns County School District's 2016-2021 Strategic Plan Goal C: “Well rounded student success goal: All students will have the opportunity to demonstrate leadership and character, strengthen their life skills and participate in service to the community.” The Transitions School located at the Evelyn Hamblen Center serves St. Johns County's highest needs ESE students ranging from Kindergarten through 12th grade. Due to their disabilities, these students aren't afforded hands-on learning opportunities outside their classroom setting. This year, a total of 12 students assisted with the Tools 4 Schools teacher resource store project. Their duties ranged from gathering items to send to teachers or they would count and package items such as markers to prepare for distribution. Tools 4 Schools is a chance for the targeted students to learn how to sort, count and fill teachers' orders in a learning nurturing environment. The life skills they are taught can be transferred into the real world where these children can someday be productive members of society.

Additionally, Tools 4 Schools is an opportunity for the community to provide free school supplies for students and teachers within the St. Johns County School District. Although St. Johns County is considered an affluent county, there are geographic areas where that isn't the case. Most of the families in this area are single-parent households living paycheck to paycheck.

When its time for students to return to schools, these families simply cannot provide the requested items for their children. It then becomes the burden of the classroom teacher to furnish the necessary school supplies. It is well known that educators are some of the lowest paid professionals across the country, so placing that responsibility on them is an unnecessary hardship. Tools 4 Schools allows teachers to order needed supplies online to support students' academic success. Educators have the opportunity to support their students' academic success by providing school supplies at no cost to them.

St. Lucie County Education Foundation St Lucie Public Schools Teacher Grant Program Project Summary Teacher grants for the St. Lucie County Public School District covered five programmatic areas: Career & Technical Education, STEM, Increasing Graduation Rates, Helping Struggling Students and Improving Teaching Quality.

CTE grants comprised two programs, both focused on improving workforce readiness for students focused on pre-engineering and the medical field. One program purchased and taught students to accurately use equipment that helped students improve proficiency in the Vital Signs Lesson program for grades 11-12. The second program, focused on grades 912 and involved the purchase of logic boards, sensors, multi-meters and soldering kits.

STEM grants supported the annual district level science fair as well as advancing students that attend the national and international science fairs.

Improving Graduation Rates grants were composed of three programs. First Generation supported students who are the first in their family to express an interest in attending college and provided counseling and exposure to the college application process. This program focused on at-risk students to encourage them to graduate with a bright future as a goal. A second program also focused on at-risk students and exposed them to high level concert instructional material and music professionals (mentors) to inspire talented students to graduate and further a career in the music field. The third program also used music to target students with disabilities and English Language Learners (ELL).

Helping Struggling Students grants supported students to improve basic academic performance and assessments. This program required students to mentor lower grade students in a musicbased band showcase. Students organized the program, practiced and performed.

Improving Teaching Quality grants supported peer to peer mentoring programs for teachers.

Teachers are inspired to stay in the profession and learn collaboration, nurturing trust, inspiring passion and leadership skills.

Sumter Schools Enhancement Foundation College and Career Readiness

Project Summary Take Stock in Children works with students in Sumter County to prepare them for both college and the workforce, and helps to create a culture of lifelong learners. This partnership helps increase graduation rates, increase students’ exposure to STEM and other technical careers, and the education required to be successful in these fields.

Over the course of this school year, Take Stock in Children students enjoyed several events that helped them gain exposure to potential careers in a wide variety of industries, including STEM fields. Each student was also paired with a volunteer mentor - a supportive adult who could help the student navigate the ins and outs of high school to prepare for graduation. In addition, College Readiness meetings held throughout the year (twice for 9th and 10th graders, 4 times for 11th and 12th graders) improved student familiarity with concepts such as selfadvocacy, transcripts, community service, types of financial aid, and personal branding. The meetings also covered "College Checklists" of tasks that need to be completed in each year in order to stay on target for graduation.

In October, TSIC held a FAFSA and Financial Aid workshop designed to help students navigate the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, and in November held a workshop centered around My Career Shines, an interactive website that features assessments and allows students to explore different careers, build a resume, search for colleges and scholarships and more.

In February, 19 students participated in the one-day Campus Tour. This year's tour was in Orlando, where students toured the University of Central Florida and the Valencia College’s School of Public Safety. In April, students benefited from two different events in Sumter Career Speed Dating and Computer Literacy. Career Speed Dating allowed 31 students to meet and interact with 10 different professionals in fields including: real estate agent, engineer, Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Canine Unit, occupational therapist, veterinarian, entrepreneur, dentist, 9-1-1 dispatcher, Florida Forestry Service, and corporate pilot.

Suwannee Foundation for Excellence in Education Matching Grants for School Libraries

Project Summary This project helped to fund the four elementary school libraries in our district with the tools and resources they need to help students make gains and become proficient. Early childhood literacy plays a vital role in a child's academic success. Media Specialists purchased accelerated reading books and reading/vocabulary programs for their media centers that helped students improve readings skills for those who were not reading at grade level. One media specialist purchased books from the Junior Library Guild which sent monthly book shipments to that school all year long. Another school purchased the Sunshine State Young Reader books. Each one of those books is part of a state reading program and are Accelerated Reader books. Our Intermediate school purchased 92 nonfiction texts, 160 fiction texts, as well as 18 Spanish titles for ELL students. Our primary school purchased BrainPOP Jr. which provides students with learning games and interactive quizzes. One librarian also purchased an iPad so she could create short videos demonstrating understanding of various vocabulary words and/or ideas which have been discussed in small groups.

Suwannee Foundation for Excellence in Education Matching Grants for Teachers

Project Summary In this project teachers applied for mini-grants which enhanced or promoted educational excellence or achievement with students, especially those students having difficulties performing at gradelevel or having problems mastering a skill. Funded grants related to the School Improvement Plan or Common Core Standards. It was the specialist or teacher's professional recommendation as to which projects were needed to meet the needs of the students.

Projects for which specialists/teachers requested funding were related to any area they would like to emphasize with special materials or innovative activities/lessons in the class, especially those which promoted reading proficiency. The minigrant program was available to all public schools in Suwannee County.

A county-wide teacher mini-grant program is one of the primary objectives of our Foundation.

Since we are a small county and have a limited number of businesses in our community, it is often difficult to financially support our teachers and students with some of the requests they have made in the past for financial assistance on projects. The matching grant program is an excellent way to ensure monies are targeted to help as many students as possible. The Suwannee Foundation for Excellence in Education Board reviewed submitted grants for approval at their monthly meetings. Books, games, software, etc. funded through grants are to be used for several years, thereby affecting a greater number of students.

Ultimately this project provided classroom teachers a unique opportunity to focus on creative ideas and best practices that would be implemented to bridge the significant gap between low performing and high achieving students and to design innovative instructional strategies that would be applied across the district to enhance literacy in its various and sundry forms. Funds were used to secure classroom materials and supplies, to provide professional and technical assistance, and to give students a chance to experience new and different modes of learning.

One teacher ran the lab and 600 students travelled through the lab once during each seven day rotation. This initiative fully equipped the STEAM lab to implement units (with the help of lab stations and centers) that covered many aspects of STEAM education. Students rotated through units that allowed them to build their knowledge of STEAM careers while exploring the vocabulary for each unit.

Engineers and scientists from local Georgia Pacific plant visited the classroom to discuss careers and also volunteered on design days.

Unit rotations flowed through the STEAM categories and allowed many opportunities for design and engineering while incorporating technology components such as coding, robotics and virtual reality. Students improved their scientific background though virtual field trips once a unit. Students travelled from the bottom of the sea to the surface of Mars and worked on observation skills and built scientific vocabulary while viewing. Students also were allowed to create and express artistic abilities though the use of ongoing design challenges using magnetic blocks, shape blocks and a classroom lego wall.

Futures Foundation for Volusia County Schools Re-Volusia-nized System

Project Summary FUTURES focused on Volusia County Schools that implemented programs that increased literacy and/or helped low-performing students. Shifts in education have reinforced the need to make learning equitable in the 21st century for the diverse learning needs within all classrooms. Therefore, the Re-Volusia-nized system was facilitated with the guidance of tutors in addition to technology and software. Using these resources, students were able to increase their comprehension and make academic gains in math, reading, writing and science.

As part of the Strategic Plan for Excellence for Volusia County Schools, the school district's goal is to meet and/or exceed state and national averages for district achievement on state assessments in reading, math, writing and science (FSA, EOC, FCAT, ACT, SAT, AP, IB, and industry certifications). FUTURES' SDEF grant project focused on improving student achievement by funding school projects fostering student involvement in extracurricular and tutoring activities as well as through project-based learning to increase student access to digital learning tools.

In total, 14 projects were implemented across 12 school sites in Volusia County. Expenditures for these projects primarily included staff (for tutoring), program supplies (books, lesson books, curriculum materials and miscellaneous classroom materials), and computer software/hardware/other equipment (to support the use of hardware, cables, etc). These items were utilized by each program to support the academic achievement of all students involved.

Project Outcomes • 53% of participating students showed increased interest in reading • 52% of participating students improved reading skills • 15% of low-performing student participants improved grades in specific subject area • 14% of low-performing student participants improved overall grade in school

Walton Education Foundation Classroom Grants

Project Summary Through local business support, the Walton Education Foundation was able to support 38 grants totaling more than $39,000 to classrooms across Walton County. Teachers applied for $1,000 individual grants or $1,500 group grants in September 2018 through our Find It Fund It grant portal. A review committee, made up of local business leaders and retired teachers, blindly reviewed and ranked the grants and the top ranked grants were awarded in October 2018. Each school received a check for all of their grants for immediate use. The school's bookkeeper purchased the items according to each grant's requirements and most teachers implemented their grant items and ideas at the beginning of the second semester in January 2019 for use throughout the second semester. These teachers gave a pre-test or other type of evaluation before implementing their program and at the end of the semester gave a post-test to evaluate the impact of the grant. The teachers then shared those results through a final report they submitted to the Walton Education Foundation along with pictures and receipts. In all cases, teachers reported improvement in their classroom because of the awarded grant. Several teachers combined these grant funds along with their classroom budgets to make a project possible that wouldn't otherwise be afforded on their normal classroom budget.

Washington-Holmes Technical Center Foundation d/b/a Florida Panhandle Technical College Foundation Certified and Ready to Work

Project Summary The goals of this project were to promote career and technical training to improve the career opportunities for high school students through providing industry certifications and/or continuing education in technical careers. This will provide students with marketable job skills for entry into technical careers and provide them with the opportunity to work in higher-wage jobs while furthering their education.

Through offerings at Florida Panhandle Technical College, high school students could enroll in 25 different programs leading to industry certification or state licensure. FPTC develops and maintains programs and courses according to industry needs, identifying the skills needed for today's job market by working closely with local employers and industry professionals. For some students, the CTE programs are an introduction into a career field that may eventually articulate into a higher level collegiate degree. For example, students who complete the Patient Care Technician program may continue on to the Practical Nursing Program or a two or four year degree nursing program. The industry certifications earned by students will articulate into college credits in the specific program area. Student achievement in CTE programs is measured by completion of OCPs, grades and industry certifications. This project provides financial assistance to pay for specialized books and references, supplies, personal equipment or tools, uniforms, insurance (liability insurance for allied health programs' clinical rotations) and state licensing fees or industry certifications.

Washington-Holmes Technical Center Foundation d/b/a Florida Panhandle Technical College Foundation STEM-A-FIDE

Project Summary The STEM-A-Fide project bolstered enthusiasm for science, technology, and mathematics among sixth grade students attending Washington County public middle schools. The project was designed to spark curiosity and expand student knowledge in STEM subject areas and careers. Students gained hands-on experience working side-by-side with STEM industry experts to discover, explore, and solve real-world problems in a variety of STEM areas, including science, aviation, electronics, aeronautical engineering, robotics, digital production, and CAD/3D design.

Project activities introduced students to the Engineering Design Process for understanding the series of steps engineers follow to come up with solutions to problems. The process included defining a problem, brainstorming, researching and generating ideas, identifying criteria and specifying constraints, exploring possibilities, selecting an approach, developing a design proposal, making a model or prototype, testing and evaluating the design using specifications, refining the design, creating or making it, and communicating processes and results. Embedded in each activity was a wealth of information for students about STEM careers and the educational pathways to STEM jobs.

STEM-A-Fide activities took place on the campus of the Florida Panhandle Technical College (FPTC) in Chipley. Industry partners and FPTC Program instructors conducted the activities over the course of four onsite days supporting 200 student participants. One day for each school was scheduled to occur in the Fall and one day in the Spring. Each day provided five hours of contact between the workforce partners and students.
