Community Cares RICK MOYERS: “Even though we haven’t lived there in many years, Highland County will always be a special place to my family, and we want Highland and all its residents to thrive. Having a donor-advised fund at the Community Foundation has helped us better understand needs in the county and opportunities for our support to make a real difference.”

DIANA BEAM: “Following my retirement from teaching, I sought a new outlet for my desire to help students succeed. The Community Foundation made it easy for me to make annual contributions to create my very own scholarship fund and support graduating seniors from Wilson Memorial High School pursue their dreams.”

OLIVER DAHL: “While I was in high school I launched a nonprofit organization, EVACE International, with the assistance of the Community Foundation. I am realizing my dream to improve the delivery of health care and education in remote communities. As my means allow, I am also creating a fund at the Community Foundation to ensure that EVACE can continue its good work for years to come.”

MARTIN & LINDA LIGHTSEY: “We know firsthand that our community needs to invest in developing the workforce for our local economy. The Community Foundation has proven to be a valuable partner skilled at bringing opportunities to us for directing our charitable giving in support of creative solutions.”

Let’s talk about what matters most to you.

JIM & KELLY HYSON: “Following the loss of our daughter in 2008, creating a scholarship that celebrates Lindsay’s life was an important part of our healing process. The Community Foundation took on the administration of the scholarship so that we could focus on moving forward and getting to know our scholarship recipients.”

SABRINA BURRESS: “As mental health professionals, Charles Shepard and I recognize the dire need in our community for greater access to counseling services. The Community Foundation’s willingness to serve as our fiscal sponsor made it possible for us to launch a new nonprofit organization, ARROW Project, dedicated to developing new mental health care possibilities.”

Your Cause Matters to Us

“My parents loved to help children become successful and caring adults. They hoped to continue that commitment long after their lifetimes. The Community Foundation was the perfect partner for them to create such a legacy. My father added a provision to his will so that a contribution would be made to the Foundation upon his passing. That gift established the A.P. Boxley, Jr. & Rachel Barksdale Boxley Memorial Fund. Knowing that needs change over time, they also left it up to the Foundation to decide how best to use the Boxley Memorial Fund to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children each year. I share my parents’ commitment to youth, so I add my support to the Boxley Memorial Fund each year.” – Al Boxley, III (Waynesboro resident and business owner)

The work of the Boxley Memorial Fund began in 2003. Many nonprofit organizations have since been able to provide important services for children in our community thanks to grants from the Fund. One example is the Blue Ridge Children’s Museum, which was established in 2017 to provide families with an affordable, hands-on activity center to explore local natural, historical, and cultural resources through the arts, sciences, and humanities.

ANNUAL REPORT 2018

Dear Friends, It’s our continued honor to dedicate the resources of your Community Foundation to enhancing the quality of life in the cities and counties we serve. We believe that every resident should have within their reach the opportunity to act on their aspirations for our community’s overall standard of living and the wellbeing of their family.

Local residents, companies, and organizations contributed over $1.6 million to our work in 2018 and we welcomed twelve new fund partners. Most importantly, our growth gave us the privilege of committing over $1.5 million in charitable grants, scholarships, and awards—our largest single-year total. Requests for our support also increased significantly in 2018. We see great work underway to assist residents with their most urgent needs, to offer them opportunities for acquiring new skills, and to continue our community’s rich cultural offerings. We also see many pressing needs remaining to be addressed, such as: •

The shortage of childcare and pre-school. This issue has a negative impact on a child’s school readiness, a parent’s employment options, and a company’s ability to fill job openings.

•

Access to mental health care. While options exist for most of us to secure care for our physical health, our community lacks the capacity necessary to serve the mental health needs of our residents.

These are only two examples of local issues that need our attention and resources. We are very fortunate that our ability to think ahead about new strategic investments is fueled by many community members who have made plans for future contributions, of all sizes, to the Community Foundation. We cannot act alone. The best plans for addressing community issues often bring together the strengths of the public, private, nonprofit, and philanthropic sectors - all working hand-in-hand with residents. To that end, we continue to develop our community engagement plan and embrace best practices in crosssector collaborations. As we work together to better understand the needs of our community, we are all able to direct our time, talents, and resources more intentionally. If you are ready to consider how you can make a difference, we invite you to have that conversation with us. Together, we can do more. Sincerely,

Dan Layman, President & CEO 8

YOUTH PHILANTHROPY COUNCIL Through our Youth Philanthropy Council (YPC) program, established in 2008, we engage students from each public and private high school in Staunton, Waynesboro, Augusta County, and Highland County in the practice of community philanthropy, including grant making to local nonprofit organizations. YPC members meet with community leaders, local philanthropists, and nonprofit executives. They work together to establish philanthropic priorities, request grant proposals from the nonprofit community, interview applicants, and determine how best to distribute grants totaling $35,000. Through YPC, we are working to prepare our next generation of leaders and philanthropists. 2018-19 YOUTH PHILANTHROPY COUNCIL:
