We are a resource for people, businesses, and nonprofit organizations committed to making a difference.

Our staff assists donors with creating charitable funds and incorporating philanthropy into their estate plans; oversees complex grant, scholarship, and award programs; engages local residents to better understand community issues and how we may support solutions; and works to strengthen the rich array of nonprofit organizations in our community.

W

e are committed to engaging in purposeful philanthropy for the greater good of our community. As this report reflects, we are working constantly to understand the

important turning points in the lives of area residents and how our resources can make a long-term difference.

Our ability to achieve this vision grows significantly each year as many individuals and companies help us expand our capacity to lead. Donors contributed more than $2.5 million in new funds to the Community Foundation last year. Combined with a strong return on our investments, our total assets grew 17% to $21,537,620.

A growing body of evidence links access to quality early-childhood education to many critical outcomes across an individual’s lifetime, including intellect, physical and mental health, earnings, and social engagement.

Nonprofit organizations such as Community Child Care, which offers services on a sliding scale based on family income, play an essential role in closing the substantial achievement gaps between advantaged and disadvantaged children.

Quality after-school programs continue to create positive outcomes for our community’s youth. The Boys & Girls Club, which provides a diverse array of activities for children in kindergarten through 12th grade, assures that success as a productive, caring, and responsible citizen is within reach of every young person who enters their doors. The Community Foundation has proudly supported the work of the Boys & Girls Club for many years.

Through our ongoing investments in workforce development we are helping young men and women connect the dots between their education, their aspirations, and our region’s in-demand jobs. As one example, a strategic grant from the Community Foundation supported the creation of the new Advanced Manufacturing Lab in the Highland County Public Schools. High school students are responsible for building a suite of 3D printers, designing products, creating the programs that control the printers, marketing their products in the community, and reinvesting in the lab for future students.

Investing in Local Innovators For those who cannot afford college, who may be struggling in the current economy, or have innovative ideas and need access to education and capital,the Staunton Creative Community Fund is an important resource and valued member of our nonprofit community. Their financial stability initiatives bring together the funding, financial literacy education, and ongoing support that are crucial to empowering entrepreneurs of modest means to build successful businesses.

Each of us has the ability to shape our community. During their lifetimes, Kitty and Bill Davenport of Waynesboro worked tirelessly to ensure that citizens with intellectual and developmental disabilities had the resources they needed to enjoy a quality life. The Davenports played a lead role in establishing two nonprofit organizations, known today as The Arc of Augusta and Vector Industries.

They also included generous provisions in their estate plans to create funds at the Community Foundation that will support these two organizations in perpetuity.

YOUTH PHILANTHROPY COUNCIL Through our Youth Philanthropy Council (YPC) program, established in 2008, we engage students from each public and private high school in Staunton, Waynesboro, Augusta County, and Highland County in the practice of community philanthropy, including grant making to local nonprofit organizations. YPC members meet with community leaders, local philanthropists, and nonprofit executives. They work together to establish philanthropic priorities, request grant proposals from the nonprofit community, interview applicants, and determine how best to distribute grants totaling $35,000. Through YPC, we are working to prepare our next generation of leaders and philanthropists.

Community Foundation Invests in Preservation of Local History During 2016, two documentary projects of significance came to fruition with the aid of grants from the Carroll & Grace “Patsy” Guynn Memorial Fund, one of several donor-advised funds within the Community Foundation.

Nancy Sorrells and Connie Doebele, on behalf of the Augusta County Historical Society, produced Hope Reborn of War, a book and accompanying DVD detailing the history of “The Post,” from its origins as a WWII military hospital to its current use as a rehabilitation center and education community. Copies of the book and DVD are available online at www.augustacountyhs.org and onsite at the Wilson Workforce & Rehabilitation Center.

Over the course of two years, a team of Mary Baldwin University students, led by faculty Marlena Hobson and Allan Moye, recorded over 600 hours of oral history with Booker T. Washington High School alumni and others who grew up in the neighborhoods around the former African-American school in Staunton. From this resource they produced the two-hour DVD entitled Threads of History: Conversations with a Community, available online at store.marybaldwin.edu.
