Our mission is to enrich the quality of life in our community by responding to needs and inspiring philanthropy.

We are a resource for people, businesses, and nonprofit organizations committed to making a difference.

Our staff assists donors with creating charitable funds and incorporating philanthropy into their estate plans; oversees complex grant, scholarship, and award programs; engages local residents to better understand community challenges and opportunities and how we may support solutions; and works to strengthen the rich array of nonprofit organizations in our community.

n November 9, 1992, the dedicated efforts led by H. Dunlop “Buz” Dawbarn and Lewis Coiner came to fruition with the incorporation of our Community Foundation. From those humble but hopeful beginnings we have built a mature, thriving, and strategic resource for the enrichment of our community’s quality of life.

Thanks to our generous donors, who contributed over $2.5 million in 2017, as well as a 15.88% return on our investments, we are very pleased to share with you that the Foundation achieved a milestone of $25 million in assets during its 25th anniversary year.

We also marked this anniversary with the launch of our Community and Resident Engagement (C.A.R.E.) initiative. Led by Cristina Casado, who joined us in May 2017 as our first Director of Community Engagement, C.A.R.E. is the centerpiece of our strategic vision to achieve a deeper understanding of our community’s opportunities and challenges, and to provide the leadership and resources needed for the community to act upon these.

Within this report you will see elements of C.A.R.E. already in motion. Whether we are bringing community members together to identify issues, engaging them in developing solutions, or supporting new strategic plans of action, we are excited to be building upon twenty five years of growth and development to position the Foundation to play an even stronger role in our community’s future.

Our individual perspectives on community issues mature when we open ourselves to other viewpoints. At the Foundation, we are committed to creating opportunities for residents of all ages and backgrounds to come together and learn from one another. Through this form of engagement we introduced high school students participating in our Youth Philanthropy Council to professionals who routinely interact with disadvantaged families and youth in the community. Their discussions led to a significant refinement of the grant-making goals set by these students. Conversations like these help everyone become more informed so they can be meaningfully involved in community service and decision making.

PARTNERING FOR BETTER SOLUTIONS The collective impact of many individuals working together has far more potential for our community than a plan developed in isolation. The Foundation convened over fifty community leaders to discuss how we can set the stage for more effective collaborations between the public, private, nonprofit, and philanthropic sectors to address important community issues.

Charlotte Wood of Waynesboro and Elzena Anderson, Waynesboro City Councilwoman, were two of many civic and business leaders from throughout the region who came together to discuss how we can advance cross-sector efforts with nonprofit organizations to address shared community goals.

BUILDING OPPORTUNITIES AND SKILLS The Foundation’s strategic investment in regional workforce development is founded on our commitment to increase the financial stability of families in our community. After much research and hundreds of interviews about how to best achieve a sustainable impact, we are working to correct outdated misperceptions of technical education and careers. Our strategy is to invest early and often, and to introduce and reinforce the modern opportunities that exist with today’s skilled technical careers.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

We developed an activity book series, Bots & Buds, to present positive impressions of technical careers in a fun and engaging format.

We sponsored the STEM Expo for middle school students in Augusta County Public Schools.

In partnership with Cadence, Inc., we’ve made a significant investment in the development of the new Computer-Integrated Manufacturing Program at Valley Career & Technical Center, which creates a critical connection between the interests of teens and rewarding, in-demand jobs with local employers.

BEING A TRUSTED PARTNER

John Sweet’s desire is to preserve his Highland County farm as a resource for future generations.

To accomplish this, he intends to donate his property to the Valley Conservation Council, which will use it for education programs and other mission-driven activities. Since Valley Conservation Council will also assume responsibility for its upkeep, John is establishing a significant endowment at the Community Foundation that will provide the Council with the financial resources needed to maintain the Sweet family farm in perpetuity.

HONORING A FRIEND’S LEGACY

P. Donald “Donnie” Moses, a long-time Staunton resident and partner in the law firm of Timberlake, Smith, Thomas, & Moses, was a friend and patron of the Staunton Music Festival. Following Donnie’s untimely passing in 2015, his colleagues, friends, and family members designed and contributed to the Staunton Music Festival P. Donald Moses Memorial Education Fund. The annual distributions from this new fund, for which the Foundation will continue to welcome contributions, will underwrite the annual classical music festival’s audience education program, including the Moses Memorial Series Lecture presented in conjunction with the annual Finale concert each year.

25TH ANNIVERSARY DAWBARN EDUCATION AWARDS For 25 years, we have been honoring individuals who inspire and encourage education in our community H. Dunlop “Buz” Dawbarn established this awards program to improve education in Staunton, Waynesboro, and Augusta County by providing cash awards to individuals who have most successfully inspired, encouraged, and fostered learning in our public school systems. Along with exceptional teachers, some of the best educators are guidance counselors, coaches, secretaries, administrators, custodians, volunteers, bus drivers, mentors, parents, community leaders, and others.

The Community Foundation will introduce its ten new Award recipients, each of whom will receive $10,000, on November 28, 2018.

Through our Youth Philanthropy Council (YPC) program, established in 2008, we engage students from each public and private high school in Staunton, Waynesboro, Augusta County, and Highland County in the practice of community philanthropy, including grant making to local nonprofit organizations. YPC members meet with community leaders, local philanthropists, and nonprofit executives. They work together to establish philanthropic priorities, request grant proposals from the nonprofit community, interview applicants, and determine how best to distribute grants totaling $35,000. Through YPC, we are working to prepare our next generation of leaders and philanthropists.
