Taking Care of Each Other

YEAR S
2021 FINANCIAL REPORT

Let’s Talk

540-213-2150 info@cfcbr.org www.cfcbr.org The Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge is a charitable organization that distributes grants, scholarships, and awards to numerous organizations and individuals each year in Staunton, Waynesboro, and the counties of Augusta, Highland, and Nelson. We are supported by hundreds of local donors, many of whom have created permanent charitable funds within the Community Foundation. Let us help you, as we have done for many others, act on your good intentions for our community. We make it simple.

Dear Friends,

Thank you for reviewing the 2021 financial report of your Community Foundation. I am pleased to share that we kicked off 2022 on a very strong foundation thanks to much growth in 2021. In addition to $4.2 million in new contributions, our total assets benefited from a 15.54% return on our investments and we began our 30th year with total assets of $41 million.

Considering the double-digit gains of 2021, followed by the market losses thus far in 2022, adherence to our primary investment objective is paramount. We understand the delicate balance between serving the needs of our community today while positioning ourselves well to address the needs of tomorrow. It is a balance we have maintained since 1992, and it is our commitment to you and our community.

Connecting people who care with causes that matter has been the centerpiece of our work for 30 years. As your Community Foundation, we dedicate the support that you and many others have placed with us for the care of our neighbors, now and forever, in Staunton, Waynesboro and the counties of Augusta, Highland and Nelson.

You are part of an amazing community of caring people. Thank you for continuing to place your trust in us.

With deepest appreciation, Dan Layman, CEO

YOUTH PHILANTHROPY COUNCIL

Through our Youth Philanthropy Council (YPC) program, established in 2008, we engage students from each public and private high school in Staunton, Waynesboro, Augusta County, and Highland County in the practice of community philanthropy, including grant making to local nonprofit organizations. YPC members meet with community leaders, local philanthropists, and nonprofit executives. They work together to establish philanthropic priorities, request grant proposals from the nonprofit community, interview applicants, and determine how best to distribute grants totaling $30,000. Through YPC, we are working to prepare our next generation of leaders and philanthropists.

A Few Words from our Foundation Family:

“As it dawned on all of us that COVID was going to impact our community adversely and for an extended period of time, one of the first places that came to mind to offer help was the Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge. I knew my donation would be paired with other donations in an impactful and efficient way to help our community.”

“It has been so comforting during the pandemic to be able to donate our funds to the Community Foundation and understand that those funds will then be used in such a thoughtful and careful way.”

— Laura Jean Brand, Former CFCBR Board Member

“The Community Foundation has treated me and my efforts to steadily grow my grandmother’s scholarship (the Rita Wilson Memorial Scholarship) with such great care. When we work together I feel like the Foundation’s most important donor.”

“There is no greater feeling than knowing you positively impacted someone else and that is what I love about YPC and the Community Foundation. It has made me realize, especially this year, that I want to help others and make the world a better place to call home.”

Together, we can do more. Responding to needs and inspiring philanthropy in Staunton and Waynesboro, and the counties of Augusta, Highland, and Nelson since 1992. www.cfcbr.org
