WHO WILL SHAPE BREVARD? 2023 • Past, Present, and Pressing Onward

321 752 5505 AS WE EMBARK Developing a better community is a big, forever job. Each day, as we take new steps forward, we leverage past progress while cultivating better systems and solutions for the benefit of future generations. The work occasionally feels overwhelming and there are times we ask ourselves if our steps, our actions, are enough. To help us through those moments, we reflect on the beauty and complexity of generative change and sociologist Elise Boulding’s concept that each of our lives impacts two centuries’ worth of time. How is that possible? Take a minute to think of the birth year of the oldest person you knew as a child, perhaps a great-grandparent. Next, calculate the year of the 100th birthday of the youngest person you’ll ever hold in your arms. That span is your 200-year present. Your presence – and the actions you take – will inspire and directly impact those two centuries. Together, these concepts underscore for us the tremendous importance of what we’re each doing right now, every day, to take steps forward to drive sustained positive change. Reflecting on this past year and looking to the one ahead, we ask – who will join us in our 200 year quest to shape our place, our beloved Brevard? The answer and invitation is simple: it’s you. Together, we’re on a shared journey to cocreate an even better Brevard, a place where everyone has the chance to thrive. Let’s embark!

WHO + WHAT + WHY A donor's vision, a nonprofit's innovation, a community imperative. Through tireless collaboration, investment, and the burning of a good amount of midnight oil - we work to bridge the gap between the noble idea and great execution. The result: ongoing progress created by the compounding efforts of passionate people in our community who believe in potential.

Unleashing Potential There is an inherent joy that comes from giving and being in service to others. Our approach is based on establishing a personal partnership with you while developing a customized plan that maximizes the impact of your vision and charitable endeavors while ensuring your intentions are fulfilled now and forever. By opening a personalized fund with the Community Foundation, you can provide gifts and grants to support a particular organization or a general cause - here in Brevard, nationally or even internationally. Advantages can include these benefits and more: Minimized taxes Personalized giving plans, research, and due diligence Named funds (in your name or in memory of a loved one) or anonymity Prudent investing for both fund growth and grantmaking in perpetuity Special events and learning opportunities Photos denoted with were captured by Randall T. Coleman, CFP, Senior Vice President, Wealth Management Advisor, Merrill Lynch Wealth Management, and talented volunteer photographer. Thank you, Randy!

CRITICAL COMPONENTS Each of the funds we steward has a mission articulated by its creator: the individual, family, company, or organization who established it. We adhere to their intentions – which can be specific or broad. Collectively, we are able to enhance and advance our community through a range of charitable and civic leadership activities.

INFINITE IMPACT There are infinite facets of the human experience and many ways to make a positive difference in your life and the lives of others, whether that’s by ensuring children and youth have a brighter future, engaging in the arts, building permanent homes that are safe and accessible, combatting poverty, or conserving our natural ecosystems and wildlife. Whatever change you wish to see in the world, we offer strategies and pathways to help you make deep, long-lasting impact. ARTS & CULTURE

HOMES AND HOUSING Where we live matters. When housing is affordable, accessible, and safe, our neighbors and our neighborhoods thrive. As housing is the cornerstone of health, stability, and economic security for all, the Community Foundation is committed to supporting efforts to reduce unsheltered homelessness and expand interim, affordable, and permanent supportive housing throughout Brevard. New data and analysis show Brevard’s unsheltered population increased by 37% from 2022 to 2023, and statistics provide evidence this will continue to increase monthly. Data from the January 2023 Point in Time Count, an annual survey of homelessness, revealed: 571 households are unsheltered in Brevard 70% of unsheltered households (seven out of 10) have been unsheltered for a year or longer 65% have lived in Brevard for more than five years; many were born here People experiencing homelessness do not migrate to other communities; they most often remain where they are from With data informing our action plans, the Community Foundation focuses our attention on addressing unsheltered homelessness among the most vulnerable, including people with significant health issues and disabilities, as well as children and the elderly.

Ending homelessness starts with available housing, and sometimes people need additional supports to achieve longterm stability. That understanding propelled Keith and me to envision and invest in Heritage Park at Crane Creek. Joining with other philanthropists and partners was key to success and we hope it inspires more to come. - Keri Donald, Steadytown and Keith and Keri Donald Brevard Impact Fund, Community Foundation for Brevard

Today, when affordable housing is developed, the architecture and landscaping are identical to market-rate housing. Surrounded by sustainable, native landscaping, Heritage Park at Crane Creek in south Melbourne shows what’s possible in affordable and permanent supportive housing when visionary and generous people, partners, and the community come together. ARTS AND CULTURE Art is essential to the human experience. Whether through mark-making, gesture, design, or fashion, expression is a core part of being human, allowing us to understand and interpret our world. Art connects both the maker and the viewer, creating an exchange that informs, allowing us to experience nuance, strengthen intelligence, and ignite innovation. When people have ways to access art and express themselves through art, we all benefit!

Come get creative with us: Exploration Arts! Fund Championing a multi-disciplinary and experiential arts center for the Space Coast Nancy Baur Dillen Art Teacher Scholarship Fund Inspiring art teachers through opportunities to develop and grow as artists and educators Endowment for the Arts Enhancing our quality of life through expression, creativity, diversity, and innovation

In 2023, we were honored to accept the first ever Arts Champion Award from the Brevard Cultural Alliance, a flywheel for arts and culture in our community.

7

EDUCATION Education is fundamental to helping people succeed. Everyone should have the opportunity to learn and flourish in schools and programs that help to discover and nourish potential. Increasing educational attainment – from birth through post-secondary and beyond – is critical to helping create a brighter future for all. Join us and other partners in Elevate Brevard, a collective impact initiative improving lives by expanding access to higher education and sustainable employment opportunities. In 2022, we set the statewide record with a districtwide 5% increase in Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) completion, an essential tool for accessing additional financial support.

CO-CREATORS 321 Throughout the year, the Community Foundation hosts a variety of events designed to educate, engage, and inspire donors of all kinds, offering opportunities for learning, connection, and inspiration – both in-person and online – to advance our important intergenerational work of building a better Brevard and beyond, together. Philanthropist and founder of the Nancy Baur Dillen Art Teacher Scholarship, Nancy Dillen, signs a beam to be used in an upcoming Space Coast Habitat for Humanity build. Renowned Dr. Visalakshi Srinivasan, who leads HealthFirst Aging Services, shared insights about aging and the comprehensive supports they provide, before we visited their Center for Family Caregivers.

Traveling together for a day filled with Co-Creators 321 experiences!

As an endowed fund, it provides annual grants in perpetuity to support causes and initiatives the couple were passionate about.

John and Betty Higdon

“Betty knew the Community Foundation would ensure her gift remained true to her charitable intentions, while staying relevant and impactful to the community she loved,” said Robert J. Naberhaus III, a shareholder with Dean Mead and estate attorney for the Higdons. Todd Starkey, senior vice president of Compass Wealth Management Group, agreed, “It was deeply meaningful to help the Higdons craft a lasting legacy supporting the causes that were near and dear to both of their hearts.”

CO-CREATING OUR COMMUNITY All Together Now In our interconnected world, three sectors play crucial roles in shaping society: the public sector, private or for-profit sector, and the independent or nonprofit sector. Working together, all contribute critical components to create a balanced and thriving community.

Did you know?

The public and private sectors are well understood. The nonprofit sector, perhaps less so.

In the U.S. The nonprofit sector comprises: 10% of our nation’s economy 10% of our nation’s workforce

In Florida The nonprofit sector is on par with construction and manufacturing industries in terms of people employed and annual wages paid.

In Brevard The nonprofit sector

ECONOMIC BENEFITS OF FLORIDA’S NONPROFIT SECTOR Florida Nonprofit Alliance-2022-2023

17

Nonprofits are mission-driven organizations, often organized as corporations, providing indispensable services to address needs and fill the gaps between government-driven and profit-generating activities. That said, having a nonprofit designation doesn’t mean they can’t make a profit – indeed they do and should. Why? So they can reinvest in the people, operations, and programs delivering on their critical missions. As you can see in these pages, there are many effective nonprofits at work in Brevard providing essential services and supports for vulnerable populations, tackling serious issues, and driving positive change forward. Truly, they are the heart of our communities. We encourage you to engage and invest! Call us with any questions.

BREVARD FUNDERS ALLIANCE BREVARD FUNDERS ALLIANCE

Brevard Funders Alliance is a collaboration of Brevard’s institutional funders working together to strengthen the community through researchinformed action, advocacy, and philanthropy. Each corporation has a unique mission and strategic approach. Together, the four members share a commitment to building a better Brevard through health and wellness, education and opportunity, and advocacy and capacity-building for the nonprofit sector.

Collectively, the four hold more than $110 million in charitable assets and leverage more than $11 million annually to improve the quality of life for our residents and build a thriving community.

CAPACITY-BUILDING Committed to the strength, success, and sustainability of the nonprofit sector, Brevard Funders Alliance members, with additional support from the Deffebach Family Fund, launched a capacity-building pilot program in 2023 in partnership with social enterprise Resilia. Through Resilia, a cohort of 11 local nonprofit organizations receive access to one-on-one coaching, online training, operational templates, fundraising tools, peer-to-peer leaning and more.

2023 Nonprofit Cohort

Since May of 2023, more than 321 resources have been accessed by the 11 organizations, with 73 individual users engaging with the program. Popular topics include fundraising, governance, board relations, and marketing.

Supporting these leaders is a powerful way to increase their impact. Like any successful business – nonprofit or for-profit – strategic focus, strong operations, and great people are essential. - Kim Deffebach, Deffebach Family Fund, Community Foundation for Brevard
