The purpose of “Inside CFB” is to share interesting stories about our world-class teachers and staff, outstanding student body, and special programming and initiatives within the district. There is so much to be proud of in CFB, and we hope you will enjoy reading and learning more about the district community through storytelling.

With a strong focus on postsecondary success, CFB offers exceptional opportunities through its College, Career, and Military Ready (CCMR) program for students to become workforce and college-ready after graduating from high school.

Before CCMR became the recognizable acronym it is today, public schools offered staple courses such as home economics and shop classes. Many students enrolled in these elective courses when they reached junior high. Girls often learned how to thread needles and bake pastries, while boys spent time using drafting compasses or working a drill press.

“The age-old shop or home economics classes do not exist anymore,” said JoAnn Gillen, CFB Chief Officer of SEL and Postsecondary Readiness. “A shift began to take place in the 1990s, and modifications and changes were made to these standard classes. What we offer today is much different than in the past.”

CTE Pathways to Graduation According to The Division of College, Career, and Military Preparation, CCMR ensures that all Texas high school students have access to high-quality pathways to career, college, and military readiness programming. Course offerings range from robotics and animation to legal courses and culinary.

“Today with pathways, culinary students,

for example, learn how to create a restaurant menu in addition to learning culinary skills to prepare meals,” Gillen said. “We want students to collaborate and learn skills that help them become marketable in an ever-changing and competitive job market.”

One of the most relevant new offerings in Career and Technical Education (CTE) is P-TECH. P-TECH represents the best of what public-private partnerships can look like, with students taking high school and college coursework simultaneously and engaging in industry-guided workforce development.

As a first-generation college graduate, Long Middle School Principal Leon Sulak understands the importance of strong academic programs like CCMR & P-TECH to help students overcome obstacles and expose them to new opportunities.

“My grandmother raised me, and she had no idea how to support me academically or how to help me with options for college,” Sulak said. “I was an average student. It took a village, and many of those people who helped me along the way are still within CFBISD. I would have benefited enormously from CCMR and P-TECH certification.”

Texas Education Agency (TEA) accountability measures have increased the visibility of CCMR initiatives, and recognition has continued to increase both inside and outside of the CFB community.

of the district, which continues to lead the region and state.

Industry-Based Certifications In addition to learning workplace skills, students can also gain industry-based certifications through CCMR. More than 65 unique certifications are offered through 12 CTE Programs of Study in high school (see pages 4-5 for more information).

College Credit Opportunities The CCMR Department is planning for sustainable growth in college credit opportunities for high school students through intentional maintenance of Advanced Placement programming, expansion of P-Tech to increase dual credit courses, and growth of dual enrollment courses through UT OnRamps. The Early College High School will also continue its exemplary program for students to earn an associate degree while in high school at the ECHS campus located within Dallas College.

Rigorous and intentional instruction has always been a cornerstone in CFBISD. With an enhanced focus on CCMR instruction, students now have new possibilities through industry certifications, associate degrees, and relevant work experience. More than ever, CFB alumni are prepared to graduate career ready with enhanced skills and resources to use in a competitive global environment.

“I was able to graduate from college in three years due to the amazing opportunities that the International Business Academy at Newman Smith HS provided me,” said Liza Serna, Newman Smith High School 2018 graduate and current teacher. “IBA really prepared me for the workplace.”

WELLBEING CFB Creates New Position to Provide Mental Health Support to Employees

Some might be surprised to know that teaching is now being called one of the most stressful job. Although working hours for teachers averaged over the whole year are similar to those in other professions, working intensively over fewer weeks of the year can lead to a poor work-life balance and higher stress levels.

Educators nationwide have found themselves with added duties due to the pandemic in addition to an already busy to-do list. Trying to make up for a year of learning loss, many teachers have experienced stress, grief, anxiety, and uncertainty.

Ensuring that employees stay healthy and well is more important than ever for staff and students. Research indicates a direct correlation between employee wellness and student health and achievement.

Understanding this need, the CFBISD Board of Trustees and district leadership created a new Employee Assistance Specialist position to provide accessible

and confidential mental health support to employees.

“Having a comprehensive, coordinated approach to employee wellness is essential to employee well-being,” said Dr. Les Black, CFB Board of Trustees President. “We want our teachers and staff to have easy access to mental health resources so they can thrive professionally and personally during these very challenging times.”

Using ESSER funds, the district hired Kristina Smith, who goes by Tina, to fill this new role.

The position is grant-funded for a minimum of three years.

“Teaching and working for a school district is rewarding but can be challenging,” Smith said.

“The pandemic has affected our profession greatly by adding more stress and uncertainty as well as forcing us to change how we do everything, leaving behind our old ‘normal.’ So many of us are dealing with loss and immense grief.”

From August 2021 through February 2022, Smith assisted 85 employees and provided more than 200 individual sessions. She provides education, tools, and resources for living healthy lifestyles and assists employees with mental health needs. These include individual counseling, grief support, stress management, after-school support groups, overall health and wellness tools and

workshops, self-care sessions, and strategies for managing emotions and conflict. Smith also provides referrals and can connect individuals to outside resources and support.

“To be effective at our job, we have to start by taking care of ourselves,” Smith said. “We cannot pour from an empty cup.

Therefore, it is important to fill our cups. Not taking care of ourselves physically and mentally subjects us to illness and fatigue, which is the leading cause of burnout. We must first take care of ourselves to be able to support our CFBISD students and families. The district was able to create this much-needed position to support our employees’ overall health and wellness.”

Smith earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from The University of Texas at Austin and her master’s degree from Southern Methodist University.

She is a Licensed Professional Counselor specializing in working with adolescents and adults.

“My favorite thing about working in CFBISD is the people,” she said. “I love this role because it allows me to provide a safe space for employees to be heard and supported. I am able to connect with employees and I am honored they share part of their life and experiences with me. I am in awe of the strength and resilience I see. The best thing is when you can tell someone feels like a bit of weight has been lifted off their shoulders after seeking support.”

Self-Care Through the district’s Employee Assistance Specialist, CFBISD Transportation Department employees practiced self-care by spending time with furry friends from Pet Partners.

Prioritizing

MENTAL HEALTH Counseling Connections Center’s Mental Health Services Available to All CFBISD Students, Families According to the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services, students who receive appropriate mental health support achieve academically and are more likely to graduate and thrive after high school.

With that in mind, CFBISD created the Counseling Connections Center in December 2019 to offer brief, solution-focused counseling for students, families, and staff.

“In CFB, we understand the direct link between social and emotional well-being and academic success,” Superintendent Dr. John Chapman said. “The Counseling Center equips our families with strategies to manage stress, anxiety, and other challenging issues so our students can focus on academics.”

Counseling topics at the center include, but are not limited to, friendship struggles, grief, coping skills, depression, anxiety, divorce or separation of parents, motivation at school, parents incarcerated, behavioral issues, self-harm, and academic difficulties.

From school closures to separation from friends to cancellation of events, the

COVID-19 pandemic has greatly affected the daily lives and mental well-being of school-aged children.

To assist the school community in overcoming this challenge, CFB decided in summer 2020 to extend the center’s hours to also be open through the summer months.

“We recognize that the social emotional well-being of our students is absolutely essential when looking at the whole child,” said Pamela Geisinger, CFB Counseling Specialist and Counseling Connections Center Director. “The recent impact of the pandemic has created even more need for mental health services for students whose education and lives have been interrupted.

The center provides an opportunity for families to receive services close to home, during convenient hours and at no cost.”

In the 2020-21 school year, 172 families were served at the center through 1,044

sessions. As of December 2021, for the 2021-22 school year, 95 families had been served with 329 sessions.

The center has 12 counselors on staff including three who speak Spanish.

Appointments are available on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.

The Counseling Connections Center is located in the ESDC Building A at 1820 Pearl St. in Carrollton. To schedule an appointment, parents/guardians should call the center at 972-968-6620.

“Thank you for offering this program to my family,” a CFB parent said. “Thank you for caring for our families. My child loved coming every Thursday to his counselor. He loved it so much that he would remind me that we had counseling every Thursday.”

THE 22nd-CENTURY SCHOOL Sheffield Elementary School’s New Building Opens August 2022 Sheffield Elementary School’s new building is set to open its doors in the 20222023 school year.

The 90,000-square-foot building is being constructed around a central learning courtyard with different learning environments oriented around it such as an art studio, library, cafeteria and classrooms.

The campus will be organized into “learning villages” of six classrooms that surround the courtyard and also have direct access to the playgrounds surrounding the campus. The courtyard will be a collaborative space with a pop-up presentation area. The result is a learning environment with strong connections to the outdoors.

“Each village is unique and aligns with the school’s vision for learning,” said Bobby Shaw, CFB Director of Facility Services.

“CFB wanted a campus that would meet the needs of a 22nd-Century learner; a student who is creative, tenacious, collaborative and joyful. Through a process that involved community members, educators, students and administrators, LPA Architecture Firm guided the district to design the new Sheffield Elementary building with the student in mind.”

Workshops with the architecture firm included exploring a “day in the life” of a future elementary student and what their learning would look like. Spaces were created to support the school’s learning goals, while

also accounting for future flexibility and adaptability of the space.

The new campus construction adheres to the initial guiding principles created in the early visioning and planning stages to build a campus that is focused on collaborative spaces, future-ready, balanced, interconnected, student centered and dynamic.

“We’re super excited about our new building,” said Ahveance Jones, Sheffield Elementary Principal. “The new innovative model is going to be incredible for our

students and community.”

Safety is also an important feature of the new building. The gymnasium and cafeteria will be clustered together to create a large, shared tornado shelter that can accommodate the entire population of the school. The building will also have innovative safety and security technology intended to be “invisible” and non-obtrusive.

Kent ES Students Learn Through Art, Music, Theatre, Dance Singing, dancing, acting, and expressing artistic creativity aren’t always the first things that come to mind when thinking about elementary school. However, at E. L. Kent Elementary, one of four Imagine Fine Arts Academies in CFBISD, they are breaking the mold by providing students the opportunity to experience success, not only in academics, but through a variety of creative expressions.

Studies have shown that involvement in the fine arts is associated with gains in math, reading, cognitive ability, critical thinking, and verbal skills. It can also improve motivation, concentration, confidence, and teamwork. The Imagine Fine Arts Academy is a comprehensive signature program where students learn and grow through art, music, theatre, and dance.

“At Kent, we believe that arts education targets a variety of learners, and that by participating in the arts, students gain a skill set that doesn’t often get targeted in other classes,” said Lorina Watts, theatre teacher and Kent Fine Arts team lead. “Students are encouraged to be creative problem solvers, to develop fine motor skills, language skills, social skills, and to improve decision making, risk-taking and inventiveness.”

Each student at Kent ES participates in a variety of fine arts classes which foster higher

levels of thinking that carry over to academics as well as to life outside of school. Parents at Kent ES can see the positive impact the fine arts curriculum has on their children.

“We just love the creative projects our children get to experience,” said the Stigler family. “We appreciate them being introduced to many types of media in the art world.”

The fine arts are offered at all elementary campuses in the form of art and music class.

CFBISD Imagine Fine Arts Academies incorporate the traditional art and music classes, as well as theatre and dance for all students.

In theatre, students focus on the process of creating plays. Topics include acting, script writing, and technical theatre. Students also work on developing their acting tools, such as face and voice, to tell a story as an actor.

“Theatre is a wonderful tool for teaching empathy and teamwork,” Watts said. “The art of creating a play inherently needs people to work together to creatively solve problems.

We develop the skills of imagination, concentration, collaboration, and communication. In these ever-changing times, theatre helps us find the common ground in our experiences and understand different perspectives.”

Kent Cardinals also participate in a variety of types of dance including modern, ballet, jazz, and folk dance.

“Dance gives students confidence,

promotes creativity and problem-solving skills,” dance teacher Tracy Kennedy said.

“Students learn body awareness, balance, and flexibility. It allows students to move and get their energy out. For many students, dance is their creative outlet and a way to express themselves.”

Principal Debbie Williams has seen changes in her students since becoming a Fine Arts Academy.

“The Fine Arts Academy has provided opportunities for students to build their self-confidence and increase their ability to publicly speak/perform in front of an audience,” she said. “Our students have a stronger sense of pride and self-worth. The creative outlet in fine arts classes has led to increased student engagement in all subject areas.”

Students truly invested in the arts also have the opportunity to experience fine arts at higher levels through their Ensemble Program. This includes Art Workshop, the Kentatonix musical group, Momentum dance company, and the Cardinal Players ensemble that performs skits, musical theater numbers, puppet shows and more.

The Imagine Fine Arts Academy is offered at E. L. Kent Elementary, Dave Blair Elementary, Tom Landry Elementary, and Country Place Elementary.

“Being in a Fine Arts Academy is so amazing because we learn so much,” Kent fifth-grader Eamon Cruz said.

During their dance class with teacher Tracy Kennedy, Kent Elementary Pre-K students work on fine motor skills by grabbing, tossing, floating, and holding onto their scarves. Through creative dance with props such as scarves, bean bags, and ribbon wands, Kent ES Pre-K students explored and learned about the elements of dance – space, time, and body.

In Kent Elementary art teacher Patricia Thorpe’s class, third-grader Isaac Ordonez creates a weaving loom. The students also created a weaving guide to follow when they weaved their yarns on the loom. During class, students learned where weaving fibers come from such as cotton, wool, silk and man-made fibers. Pre-K through fifth-grade students at Kent ES attend art class once a week.

Ensembles

Art Workshop In the Art Workshop, students learn how to create and weave on clay looms and experiment with ceramics and mosaics. Students also create clay flowers, Japanese tea bowls, clay animals, and storyteller dolls – sculptures of parents telling stories of their heritage to their children.

Kentatonix Musical Group In the musical group, Kentatonix, students play instruments and sing choral arrangements at different concerts throughout the year.

Students may also participate in an Ukulele Ensemble group, learning the basics of the instrument and playing music with each other. Auditions are held at the beginning of the school year.

Momentum Dance Company In the Momentum Dance Company, fourth and fifth grade students who have a passion for modern dance and a love of performing audition to be selcted into the company. Momentum Dance Company performs throughout the year and has even danced in the Creekview High School Dance Concert.

HEROES Checking temperatures, distributing masks, and following social distancing guidelines were just a few of the new pressures that school nurses experienced with the onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Starting a new job during a pandemic made my transition into school nursing hard,” said Keri Swartzendruber, Farmers Branch Elementary Nurse. “As a new school nurse, it was overwhelming trying to find a balance of what the normal expectations were as well as keeping up with all the changes with COVID-19. We didn’t have in-person meetings, so I got to know people via Zoom. I spent a lot of time following up with sick students and teaching about COVID-19.”

New and experienced school nurses alike have found themselves in the middle of

a whirlwind of changes and requirements during the pandemic. Guidelines from state and national health organizations have changed rapidly as the medical community learned more about the spread of the disease.

“These dedicated health professionals have managed to balance their existing job requirements with ever-changing COVID rules and regulations during the past year and a half,” said Sandra Lieck, Director of Health Services. “The 38 CFBISD nurses have done an outstanding job caring for our families and staff, while working long hours.”

With 17 years of nursing experience in CFBISD, R. L. Turner High School nurse Heather Hays spent much of her time during the 2020-21 school year learning how to deal with COVID.

School Nursing Through a Pandemic “There weren’t enough hours in the day to do what I had to get done,” Hays said. “I worked 12-15 hours every single day of the week and many hours on the weekend. As nurses, most of our time was filled with being COVID-19 case managers. Our district relied heavily on the school nurses to manage illness, not only for students but employees. Daily, I was COVID testing several employees and completing paperwork that I had to send to school administration and human resources. It was impossible to get our regular school nursing duties completed and do what COVID case management required. We were constantly learning new protocols.”

Hays has managed multiple health scenarios with students and staff during her tenure as a school nurse. This experience gave her a solid foundation when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and she was faced with trying to keep the virus from spreading

widely among students and staff.

“I am thankful I have been in this role for many years because I know how to prioritize what has to be done and what can wait,” she said. “Thankfully, I did not have to figure out how to be a new school nurse and deal with a pandemic at the same time.”

Right before the 2021-22 school year started, many hoped the year would be different than the previous one in regards to the pandemic.

“With the decline of COVID cases towards the end of spring 2021, I was so excited to have what I thought would be a normal 2021-2022 school year,” Hays said. “Unfortunately, I was wrong. COVID came back with a vengeance at a school, and there weren’t enough hours in the day to get it all done. Thankfully, with the support of our outstanding director, Sandra, and the extra support staff CFB has provided, while still overwhelming, COVID has become more manageable.”

According to the American Federation of Teachers, about 45,000 school nurses are employed in the United States. Today, school nurses perform a critical role within the school district by addressing the major health problems experienced by students and staff. This role includes managing students’ medical histories, administering medications, providing health education, and more.

Nurses choose to work in the public school arena for a variety of reasons. For R. L. Turner High School nurse Heather Hays, she decided to work in school nursing when she helped

School nursing began in the early 1900s when a school nurse was hired to reduce absenteeism by intervening with students and families regarding healthcare

during a particular community project in college.

“During nursing school at the University of Texas at Arlington, I had a community health nursing course, and I worked closely with a local school nurse helping teen moms,” she said. “The job was intriguing to me, and I enjoyed the work.”

As she advanced through nursing school, Hays discovered she liked the diversity that school nursing offered.

“I loved that a school nurse is involved in every type of nurse emergency from mental health and women’s health to pediatric and community health,” she said.

“I love that because of my role as a school nurse, if a student has a health condition, I can provide care/assistance to enable them to have a ‘normal’ school day. I also love the relationships that naturally develop with students.

I enjoy watching them transform from young ninth-grade, timid students into responsible, graduating adults. I love when students come back to visit, or if I see them out in the community, they share their successes with me.”

STATE Champion Three-Time

Creekview HS Wrestler Conrad Hendriksen Dedicated to Winning When Creekview High School senior Conrad Hendriksen started high school his freshman year, he decided to dedicate his time to being on the wrestling team even though he weighed 15 lbs less than the lowest wrestling weight class.

His first year, he battled against opponents bigger than him but made it to the round of eight before losing to a junior who was much larger than him.

Whereas most athletes might be disheartened and contemplate moving on to another sport or extracurricular activity, Hendriksen used this to fuel his fire and worked harder every day to make sure that the following season he wouldn’t leave the state tournament feeling the same way. It ended up being a turning moment in his career as he has claimed the State Champion title three years in a row, his sophomore, junior and senior year.

“The reason I picked wrestling is because I didn’t win state my freshman year and I wanted to make sure that didn’t happen again,” Hendriksen said. “My dad always wrestled, and as a kid he let me venture out and do other sports. I played baseball and wrestled all the way up to high school, then I chose to wrestle and put all my time into that.”

Creekview High School coach Sean Kitchen says it has been an honor to watch Hendriksen develop both as an athlete and a young man.

“When I first met him as a freshman, I immediately knew that he had the intangible qualities to become a State Champion,” Kitchen said. “I’ve watched him grow into the hardest working young man this school has ever seen. He has grown tremendously as an athlete, but furthermore, has turned into an outstanding young man. He is constantly working to build up those around him to help them feel success and accomplishment in their own lives. He has been a leader by example from day one, and matured into a servant leader who feels just as much accomplishment when he sees the people around him succeed.”

The Creekview High School senior has made notable accomplishments and set the precedent for success in the Creekview wrestling program. His accomplishments include: § First wrestler to be ranked No. 1 pound-for-pound in the state of Texas § First Creekview High School wrestler to be a three-time State Champion § First Creekview High School male wrestler to become an All-American at the Cadet and Junior Nationals

Coached by Kitchen, the reigning District 9-5A Head Coach of the Year, Hendriksen has taken advantage of every opportunity thrown his way to become a wrestling champion in the state of Texas.

“He is the model for success and has shown that with his work ethic,” Kitchen said. “He trains year-round, never taking days off, and always putting forth his best effort. These accomplishments were earned through blood, sweat, tears, and most importantly, sacrifice.

He has set the bar high for the younger athletes that will try to follow in his footsteps and left an imprint that will show them that nothing great in life, that is truly worth achieving, comes easy.”

Hendriksen credits his coaches for the role they have played in his championship titles.

“I think there are different types of coaches at different levels of wrestling,” he said. “I think younger wrestlers need a coach to show them how to wrestle, but as wrestlers figure out how to wrestle, a coach needs to recognize that and evolve with the wrestler. They need to make a switch from showing them half nelsons and double legs to showing them how to live a lifestyle for a high-level athlete and more importantly be a bigger motivator than a wrestling coach. Luckily, I have the three biggest motivators for coaches; coach Kitchen, Melvin, and Hardy.”

Kitchen says he has learned from Hendriksen too.

“I have worked with Conrad around his schedule to make sure he is training in the right spots at the right time,” Kitchen said. “As a coach, it is important to be readily available to adapt to each particular athlete because they are not all the same. Developing a mindset of success for the athlete is critical. Success for the coach and success for the program fall beneath this. Coaching Conrad has taught me how to coach the whole athlete; from technique, to weight training, to conditioning, to mindset.”

Hendriksen’s advice to upcoming athletes is to persevere and practice.

“For younger athletes, know that nothing matters until high school,” Hendriksen said. “So have fun and learn your sport. Learn from your losses and keep grinding forward. Go out and compete and learn how you need to evolve around the sport before you get to high school. For athletes that want to know why I practice so much, the answer is I am addicted to working hard and winning. I wasn’t always like that, but when I started seeing improvement, I fell in love with it.

That right there is the key to success; fall in love with the process and you will get to where you want to be.”

It takes a village to raise a child. With education, that village not only includes teachers and staff, but also the community.

The average school teacher spends $750 out of their own pocket each year on supplies for their classrooms. While they are talented and resourceful, teachers can’t do it alone.

That’s where the CFBISD Educational Foundation comes in.

Established in 1997, the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization supports the district’s campuses, teachers and students with dollars otherwise not available through state and federal funding.

“Without the work of our foundation, many students wouldn’t have the opportunities they now have,” said Luke

Erlenbusch, chairman of the foundation’s Board of Directors. “With grants and scholarships, we’ve been able to encourage the direction of education in our district.”

Long Middle School Electives Department Head Meason Kolkhorst received a $2,500 grant to build a trebuchet device that will help when teaching engineering principles demonstrating force and motion.

“The trebuchet is integral to the curriculum,” Kolkhorst said. “Without this significant gift, we wouldn’t have been able to make this program work as well as it does.

This will go a long way toward helping us prepare the next generation of inventors, engineers and entrepreneurs.”

To be able to fund these grants, the foundation relies in part on their annual employee giving campaign, which begins in the fall and results in more than $50,000 in pledges each year. The foundation receives the bulk of its support from donors, corporate support and alumni engagement.

The foundation provides Impact Now! Grants, student scholarships and Innovative Grants. Since the foundation’s beginning in 1997, it has been able to award more than $1.6 million in grants and scholarships.

Giving House Fills Needs, Impacts Student Learning Having to move home suddenly and without an opportunity to take any belongings with them, a CFB student found themselves in desperate need of clothing and shoes.

That is where the CFB Giving House came in.

“The Giving House provided me with brand new Adidas shoes, totally awesome clothes and super cool hoodies,” the student said. “It felt great to know I was looking good during an extremely hard time for me.”

The CFB Giving House is a place where staff can request specific items for their students to meet basic needs. It performs much like a clothes closet and keeps an inventory of new, specific items such as socks, underwear, hygiene items, fleece or knit jackets, uniforms and shoes. School counselors complete a request form to have the items delivered to the schools and in the hands of the student in need within 24 hours.

Because of the Giving House initiative, students receive the help they need when they need it. For example, in August, the Giving House provided backpacks full of supplies and uniforms for every student who needed assistance.

Dr. John Chapman brought the Giving House concept to CFBISD when he started as Superintendent.

“I know we need to meet students where they are, and the Giving House program is in place for that purpose,” he said. “Giving House is an initiative to help educate the whole child. No child should go without the proper food, clothing or supplies. Meeting the basic needs of students is essential to establishing a foundation for academic achievement.”

Since its inception, the Giving House has served more than 5,000 students.

“When basic needs are not met, students often struggle with worry and anxiety, which

can be consuming,” said Lyn Torres, CFB Coordinator of Mental Health and Behavior Services. “Parents’ stress is often passed down to their children when they are unable to provide basic necessities, increasing the anxiety of our students. Having the Giving House fill that need alleviates some of the stress.”

The Giving House is possible with the support of giving community members, CFB staff, businesses, churches, retired educators, vendors and many other community organizations. Since inception, more than $100,000 has been donated to the Giving House.

Inaugural Founding Donors were honored at an event in November 2021.

These donors are recognized on an Inaugural plaque at the Administration Building.

Esther Peng, Ranchview High School senior Four-time Texas All-State Philharmonic Orchestra member, senior Esther Peng, plays the violin at Ranchview High School.

According to director Brian Towndrow, this is an extraordinary accomplishment.

“Making a Texas All-State ensemble is rare enough on its own,” he said. “On violin, I would say only about 100 or so violinists make the Texas All-State Orchestras. For Esther to have made it as a freshman was extremely special. To repeat the same achievement through successive years, all while bettering her results every time, is really remarkable.”

Peng first picked up a violin in her sixth grade beginner orchestra class at Barbara Bush Middle School and her passion started.

“We are enormously fortunate to have a community in CFBISD that values the arts and makes decisions to back that up,” Towndrow said. “While individual players like Esther are the exception, and they garner attention and accolades for our programs, the reality of the situation is that we consistently produce high achieving ensembles in our district in every discipline, and being able to foster the marketable skills that a class like orchestra instills in these students is a reward on a whole other level.”

As a violinist, Peng thinks, works and processes things in a unique way. Beginning with lessons in seventh grade, she progressed by leaps and bounds. Soon, Peng was trying solo pieces that usually only high schoolers attempt.

“When she practices, most of what she is working on is already up in her memory,” Towndrow said. “She will sometimes just cycle through the material rapid fire, like someone tuning into different radio stations one after the other.”

Peng is a leader among her peers in orchestra. She is quick to help others by making suggestions in her section, asks great questions in class and shares keen insight during discussions.

“While it’s great that I’ve achieved so much, I would also like to point out that high achievement isn’t everything,” Peng said. “At the end of the day, what you remember are the experiences and the friends you make along the way, and not so much your rank relative to everyone else in the state. I’ve had such amazing opportunities to connect and perform with extraordinary musicians from around the world, and that’s incredibly valuable in its own right.”

Sophia Wilson, Blalack Middle School seventh grader Attendees of the 2021 State Fair of Texas had the pleasure of seeing artwork on display from standout Blalack Middle School seventh-grade artist Sophia Wilson.

The middle schooler with a passion for art found out about the State Fair Art Contest from her art teacher, Jessica Hayward.

“Sophia is very artistic and enjoys the challenge of entering competitions,” Hayward said. “I usually keep my students updated with information on any contests, so that they have the opportunity to compete.”

Wilson entered two pieces in the competition and received first place and an honorable mention for her work.

“The first place piece was called ‘Introspection’ because she looks like she is pondering the future,” Wilson said. “It was also my first ever oil painting portrait. The honorable mention one was called ‘Cowgirl Girlboss.’ I made it to represent a female Big

Tex because I don’t think women get represented enough at the State Fair. Placing twice meant a lot to me since it was my first time entering.”

Wilson is no stranger to winning. As a sixth grader, she placed first in the DART Student Art Contest for her artwork titled, “Heroes Ride DART.” This contest, open to students from throughout North Texas, asked students to illustrate a specific theme.

Her winning artwork was featured on DART’s website, on the Dallas Museum of Art’s online gallery and at Love Field Airport.

In the future, Wilson intends to turn her passion for art into a career.

“I either want to illustrate books, work for graphic design companies, or even work at Pixar,” she said. “I like creating art because I can express the feelings in my mind through pieces of art for others to see.”

Diego Notario, R. L. Turner High School senior Described by his teachers as “a student we all dream of having,” R. L. Turner High School senior Diego Notario’s hard work and determination leaves an impression.

Notario first came to the United States in 2018. Academically, he is among the top 7% of his graduating class.

“He came as a newcomer, not knowing English on top of all the struggles and anxieties that a new immigrant faces in this country,” English teacher Elizabeth Varughese said. “Amidst all the struggles, he worked hard in all his classes and in life in general. He is a great example of motivation and proof to all that it is possible to achieve one’s goals with hard work and determination.”

Notario immediately stood out to both teachers and coaches.

“Diego has only been in our program since January of 2020,” tennis coach Stephen Salazar said. “Diego has greatly impacted our program with his leadership and work ethic. He has helped push this program in the weight room, on the practice court and in the classroom.”

Notario, who has been a part of Turner’s

METSA Academy since his freshman year, loves being involved in school. He is a member of National Honor Society, Lion Crew, Youth Advisory Council, and the Interact Community Service Organization.

“The same amount of work that he puts in the weight room and court, he puts into the classroom,” Salazar said. “I have never had to worry about his grades or getting caught up because of missing a class due to tennis, and I can’t honestly think of a time he has not been willing to help. He is a great kid and I’m looking forward to the big things he can do in his future.”

Notario has a positive outlook on life.

“I try to enjoy every part of my life, do things that I enjoy and make me happy, and avoid things that disgust me at all costs,” he said. “I smile because I love to give back the happiness that I have. I like to show how happy I am and I believe that smiling is the best way to do it. I also like to think that by smiling, I’m making others a little bit happier.

And, I live because feeling all that happiness and giving it back to the world makes me feel alive.”

CFB ALUMNI Spotlights JACLYN BREWER-POOLE Newman Smith High School 2004 Graduate

After graduating from Newman Smith High School in 2004, Jaclyn Brewer-Poole studied dance and gained international dance experience at The Juilliard School in New York before coming back home to impact the CFB community and the district’s Fine Arts program as a middle school dance teacher.

“I had the opportunity to train under various well-known choreographers as well as study dance internationally in Spain and Canada,” Poole said. “Additionally, I danced

professionally in the Dallas-Fort Worth area with Bruce Wood Dance, Avant Chamber Ballet, and Ballet Dallas.”

Before high school, Poole attended McLaughlin Strickland Elementary, McCoy Elementary, and DeWitt Perry Middle School. She was a member of the Gallery in Motion dance company at Newman Smith.

“I spent most of my time dancing in high school,” Poole said. “I had many opportunities to perform including at school and community events, the state capitol building, and the National High School Dance Festival in Pennsylvania.”

Poole was also a part of Smith’s International Business Academy, which allowed her to complete a marketing

internship at Texas Ballet Theatre while being a student in high school.

Today, Poole teaches middle school students dance etiquette, history, and basic anatomy, as well as a wide range of dance styles including modern, jazz, hip hop, ballet, folklorico, and tap. She also started dance programs at both Blalack and Vivian Field middle schools.

“Middle school dance has given me the opportunity to be who I want to be and express myself,” said Erika Martinez, Blalack Middle School eighth-grader. “It has been the best part of middle school, and I honestly don’t know where I would be if it weren’t for this class with Mrs. Poole.”

ANNALISE FELLOWS Ranchview High School 2009 Graduate

With a bachelor’s degree from The University of Texas at Austin and coursework well in progress toward a Master of Business Administration degree, Ranchview High School alumna Annalise Fellows has found a successful career in the retail fashion industry.

Currently, she is a Site Merchandising Manager for Macy’s. Since 2014, Fellows has worked for several national retailers including Stage Stores and J.Crew.

“At Macy’s, I am responsible for all dresses on Macy’s.com,” Fellows said. “There, I work on curating experiences for customers

around where and how they find products, setting up sales events, and helping launch special projects each year.”

Fellows graduated from Ranchview HS in 2009. While in high school, she was a member of the band, student government, crime stoppers, and National Honor Society.

“I played the flute, which I loved despite my lack of rhythmic ability,” Fellows said.

“I loved being involved and volunteering through school.”

After graduation, Fellows attended UT majoring in marketing through the McCombs School of Business.

“I knew going into college I wanted to work in retail and fashion, but wanted to be on the business side,” Fellows said. “So I

focused on learning how businesses operate and what influences customers to make a purchase decision.”

She credits CFB for impacting her future.

“Without a doubt, all my teachers at Ranchview impacted my life,” she said. “In particular, Mr. Lancaster has been a mentor and friend for more than a decade. Calculus was not my best subject, and as a freshman at UT on the verge of not passing college calculus, I went back to Mr. Lancaster for several tutoring sessions.”

Fellows is currently completing her MBA from New York University’s Stern School of Business and hopes to continue her career working with retailers in a rapidly changing industry.
