President’s REFLECTION

Latonya Hicks FAEA President

The Pulse and the Trumpet I’ve just returned from six days at the National Convention, and it’s moved me even deeper into this reflective space I’ve been inhabiting over the past year. In this skin, in this role, at this moment in time, I find myself moving between extremes—sometimes it’s like drinking from a firehose of learning, and other times it’s an intense mirror of self-critique. Yet, through it all, I remain so deeply proud of Florida and of FAEA. We are a band of beautiful, scrappy misfits—artists with surreal proportions, driven by hearts so expansive that it’s not our legs, but our spirit that carries us forward. There’s something extraordinary about the way we show up, grow together, and lead with love.

An interesting result of this role means I more often than not have to speak before I’ve had the time that I usually take to process, perfect, and distill. So here we are and I ask that the grace I give you, you feel compelled to give back to me. I spent the first three years of college studying biological sciences. I wanted to heal people. In so many ways, our classrooms are clinics of another kind—spaces where healing happens not through medicine, but through making, through meaning, through art. Over time, I realized that healing comes in many forms. In one of those classes, we explored a concept that still resonates with me today: biodiversity. Biodiversity is a key indicator of ecosystem health. It’s essential to the stability of our planet. It reflects the incredible variety of life on Earth—species, genes, ecosystems—and how they interact with one another and their environment. You’re probably thinking what is she talking about but stay with me. Biodiversity, short for “biological diversity,” includes everything from microbes to mammals, from forests to coral reefs. All of it—working in balance—sustains life.

Now, let’s talk about advocacy. Advocacy has many layers. Some people are born to be the trumpet solo—bold, visible, leading the melody. Again I ask you to bear with me as I build this musical metaphor because I promise it all connects--at least in MY head. Some of us are the first chair trumpet, blazing the path with brilliant sound. Others are the pulse of the percussion—steady and powerful, felt more than seen. That beat beneath the melody holds everything together. That’s how advocacy feels in my skin. The true beauty lies in the synergy. Some instruments, on their own, might not sound harmonious. But together? Together, they create something transformative—music that stirs hearts, lifts spirits, and shapes how we experience a moment.

As we navigate this time of transition—when truth often feels stranger than fiction and tension pulls at the seams—remember: you can be the soloist, shouting your cause forte to the world. Or you can be the quiet, steady rhythm, directing the tempo from within. Both roles are essential. So let us seek and celebrate the biodiversity around us—in people, in approach, in beliefs, in abilities, ages, cultures, locations, and perspectives. Just as biodiversity signals a healthy planet, our human biodiversity is vital to the health and stability of our association, our communities, and our world.

And let us remember that art—like advocacy, like music, like ecosystems—is most powerful when it embraces difference, when it heals through color, and when it invites everyone to take their place in the ensemble. When we come together in harmony, we move people. So release any guilt about not being the trumpet. Embrace your place in the orchestra. Or be the trumpet—proudly, boldly. Either way, you belong here.

Board Consultant’s report

Government Relations/Advocacy The Florida 2025 Legislative session was scheduled to end on May 2, 2025. However, the last 60 days have been tumultuous and unpredictable. At the beginning of the session, very few bills were filed, mainly due to the emphasis on immigration and the Special Sessions called by the Governor. The session will have to be extended because the House and Senate have not yet agreed on the budget. While we know it will be extended, we have not received information on when it will be scheduled. The Governor must agree upon and sign the budget by June 30, 2025. Therefore, we are in “wait and see” mode.

The Florida Art Education Association (FAEA) has been following the numerous bills filed that may impact our school districts, teachers, and students. We are aware that SB 296, which provides more flexibility to school districts regarding school start times, has been passed and sent to the Governor.

This bill is in response to the House bill passed last year that mandates that middle school start times can be no earlier than 8:00 AM and High Schools 8:30 AM, which was to be implemented by July 1, 2026.

In addition, the School Safety Bill SB 1470 has been passed and sent to the Governor, which revised the language on when school doors must be locked. There are many other bills that we have been following that may die due to not being heard by the end of the regular session. We will post an update on the website after the governor signs the bills that made it through the process.

When the session concludes, it typically takes two or three weeks to compile a comprehensive report detailing all the results of the relevant education bills. The FDOE interprets the information, which is then placed in the statutes and provided to Districts for implementation.

2026 Legislative Session The 2026 legislative session will be held earlier next year opening January 13, 2026, and will run for 60 consecutive days to March. While the 2025 session just ended, staff and volunteers will begin working on strategies to strengthen arts education in Florida shortly. Be prepared and know your legislators; let them know you are their constituent. Meet with your elected representatives and senators this summer, and talk with them about the importance of visual arts education for all Florida students.

Develop a strong relationship with them, get to know them, and communicate regularly. Relationships are critical to advocacy work for your district. Developing professional relationships with key decision makers is vital to your program.

Whether a public, public charter, private, or home school, we can help influence our programs' decisions. In the coming months, schools and school districts will determine their budgets for the 2025-2026 school year, and funding decisions will be made locally. You must voice your program's needs with the school board and the school district administrators.

Critical actions for FAEA members Be active in advocating for your programs and visual art education.

• Stay informed. Read eblasts from the FAEA office, plan to participate in webinars, etc.

• Establish communication and trust among arts educators • Visit and/or call your legislators. Following the visit, let us know if you have any issues or concerns.

• Involve parents and communities in your art programs and events.

• Help to influence change in visual arts education in your school and community.

FAEA membership is open, and we encourage you to invite a colleague to join you in ensuring that visual arts education continues to be as strong as possible for all Florida students.

Advocacy is critical to our efforts to provide students and teachers with what is needed for the visual arts. BE THAT ADVOCATE! Remember, the Arts are Essential for all Florida students.Have a great summer!

As summer approaches, I want you to take some time to celebrate the successes—big and small, personal and professional.

Celebrate the moments when you saw something click with your students, to the art shows you tirelessly hung, and everything in between. All of it matters, and all your hard work is appreciated. You are providing a love for learning and the foundations for your students’ art.

As you celebrate your successes, consider celebrating others as well. Think about who in your art teacher circle has been a pillar of excellence or a mentor. Make a nomination for the FAEA Awards. Nominations are due June 1. Another way to celebrate the work we do is our member spotlight campaign.

This campaign is ongoing through the advocacy and social media committees.

I don’t know about you but throughout the school year, I get so focused on my kids and their projects that I often forget that I’m an artist too. As you plan out your summer, carve out some time to be creative. FAEA is hosting summer workshops in June. Come be a part of the fun, create, and get some new ideas to prepare for next school year. Whether you create at Summer Camp South or on your own, once you’ve created, submit! FAEA’s Member Virtual Exhibition is now open for submissions until August 20. I can’t wait to see what you make!

We’re also excited to announce the 15th Annual All-County Middle School Art Show, hosted by the St. Augustine Art Association (STAAA) in partnership with the St. Johns County School District (SJCSD). This premier event, guided by our visual arts instructors, showcases the work of our middle school students in a professional gallery setting. It’s a wonderful chance to celebrate the artistic achievements of our students and demonstrate the strong bond between the school district and our community in recognizing the importance of creative expression. This year’s show promises a stunning collection of works that will evoke a wide range of emotions.

1. Summer Activities & Professional Growth The summer months are ideal for personal development. While the classroom may be quiet, there are many growth opportunities. Consider attending FAEA’s Summer Camp South Florida workshops, designed to inspire and refine your teaching practices. It’s also a great time to experiment with new techniques or materials for your art or curriculum. Additionally, take advantage of online courses and art education conferences to stay updated on the latest trends.

2. Preparing for Next Year Reflect on your lessons from this year and consider adjustments to your curriculum. Summer is an excellent time to plan for improvements and integrate new resources. Collaborating with colleagues through FAEA’s virtual networks is a great way to exchange ideas.

The summer months can be a great time to develop and cultivate our own creative works of art and these pieces could be submitted for the Member Virtual Exhibition (see the FAEA website for more information about submission dates).

Sources of creative inspiration may also include attending FAEA Summer Workshops that will be held in June (see the FAEA website for updates).

Other sources of inspiration may be visiting museums, galleries, researching artists, and art festivals.

Spending some time pondering and deeply thinking about what to create is one of the luxuries of time in the summer when the calendar is lighter and schedules are less filled with deadlines. Even if only for a short while, this time can open up ideas for new artistic works.

Board Connections Debra Barrett-Hayes (FAEA Retirees Representative) Stuart Riordan 2018 Oil on Canvas Currently I am busy working with a team on a retrospective catalogue to commemorate the inspiring work of the late Stuart Riordan.

Stuart was a native Virginian like me and we became fast friends in the 1980s. Ron Yrabedra, FAMU Art Professor, called Stuart the “Leonardo of the Southeast.” It is a project of the heart and we hope to have the catalogue with a traveling exhibition to share her amazing art with a wider audience.

Hello Museum & Cultural Organization Educators! As summer approaches, this is a great time for you to step back, reflect, and refill your metaphorical cup. The academic year is a non-stop blur of program planning, inspiring visitors, and managing creative chaos. The slower pace of summer brings the opportunity to reconnect with your own creative passions and refresh your teaching approach.

It is important to take the time to reflect on the past year.

What worked well in your programs? What challenges did you face? Journaling or sketching your thoughts can provide clarity and spark new ideas you can implement in the coming year. Engaging in your own creative projects can reignite the passion that brought you to education in the first place.

You may want to consider professional development opportunities. This summer, FAEA has a great professional development weekend planned in South Florida. Growing your own skills will not only result in furthering your own personal artistry but also bring fresh perspectives for planning new programs and engagements with your visitors.

Even though your programming continues through the summer, allow yourself some time to rest. Creativity thrives in a well-nourished mind and spirit. Taking time to simply enjoy the beauty around you can help reinvigorate and inspire you to tackle the next academic year.

Division Updates Supervision/Administration Division Director

Dr. Laurie Hoppock Duval County Public Schools Duval County We are so close to the finish line on this school year! At this point the district art exhibitions have gone up, the awards have been given, we have facilitated the first year of a Florida Seal of Fine Arts for our graduating seniors, and we look forward to making the most of our summer. Have fun these last few days/weeks of school by creating some innovative projects with your students! Group art pieces and murals are a fun way to end the year on a high note.

Be sure to check out the FAEA Summer Camp South series in South Florida in June and make a plan to join in the fun.

Better yet, bring a friend! Use this time to make your own art as well! The submission window for the Member Virtual Exhibition opened on May 1st and will be open until August 20th.

If you’re an art supervisor, the summer is a busy time of preparing for the start of the new year and maybe even hosting your own workshop sessions. What is your favorite way to celebrate your district’s art teachers and welcome them back for a new year? What practices will you shift or modify to make next year better?

Local Art Education Assembly Division Director Natalie Potacco Curlew Creek Elementary Pinellas County Wow, what a year it’s been! As the school year winds down, it’s easy to feel the weight of it all—but let’s take a moment to celebrate how far we’ve come.

To my fellow art educators, teaching art is no small feat.

We’re not just instructors; we’re mentors, cheerleaders, and creative guides who inspire students to see the world differently. That’s a big responsibility, and it’s okay to feel the strain.

What’s important is knowing you’re not alone.

Now is the perfect time to connect with your fellow art teachers and friends. Organize or join a casual get-together— whether in person or virtual. These gatherings can be impactful. Vent, share triumphs, swap ideas, and remind each other why we do what we do. Even a short connection can leave you feeling recharged and inspired!

As we approach the finish line, remember that your work matters. Every piece of artwork hanging in the hallway, every student who found their voice, and every lesson that sparked joy is proof of your impact. Your students see the magic you bring to the classroom and community, and they’ll carry it with them long after the school year ends.

Take it one day at a time and celebrate the small victories.

You’ve already made a difference, and you’ll continue to do so.

Together, we’ve got this.

Happy Spring my fellow Retired Art Teachers ... most affectionately “The RATs”. Many of us experienced an unusual snowy Winter and are ready for Spring. As we move into the beautiful Florida Spring, think about ways to rejuvenate yourself and your practice. I certainly hope you will join us again this Fall in St. Pete again. I love this location and all it has to offer us. Please let me know if you hope to attend and/or present.

We had a great showing last October in spite of a hurricane.

I really needed to be with all of you creatives… and loved it!

Feeding your creative souls…

I have a couple of ideas. Attend FAEA’s Summer Workshops and give yourself creative art experiences with your FAEA family. Read and/or participate in a book discussion related to rejuvenating yourself: I was fortunate to participate with Lark Keeler and her NAEA caucus on a lively discussion of The Creative Act: A Way of Being by Rick Rubin. I purchased a spiral bound “lay flat” book and listened to Rubin, himself reading the text. The book became a nightly event to help center me. This would make a good FAEA book study and presentation. Anyone interested?

FAEA Past President, Nancy Puri recommended the NYT’s Bestseller, Your Brain on Art: How the Arts Transform Us by Susan Magsamen & Ivy Ross. I used this book to help connect with our local hosptial’s new cadre of Resident Doctors. I gave a presentation & hands-on workshop to 30 new family practitioners about medicine & the arts. I highly recommend outreach like this for our fabulously talented “RATs”. It’s a win/

win as I got to teach a new doctor that recently diagnosed me with walking pneumonia and personally thank him.

Another interesting read is Walking as Artistic Practice by Ellen Mueller, published in 2023

by SUNY Press. Ms. Mueller is the Director of Programs at Arts Midwest. The book was inspired by a course at the University of South Florida in Tampa taught by Rozalinda Borcila. Ms. Mueller eventually taught this concept at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design as a workshop. Enjoy an artistic “walk about”.

I had a wishful, wild hair moment and decided to tryout for the NAEA School for arts leaders! I am so very excited to say that I was selected for the program and will travel to the Crystal Bridges Museum this summer and I will spend the next 10 months happily researching with other Arts Leaders from across the country. I promise to share this experience with any and all of you who are interested in this program. I am so excited I can hardly sit still.

We had a very productive and busy conference with many offerings and opportunities for the FAEA "RATs". If you have ideas, suggestions, and comments, I would love to hear from any and all of you!

Summer Camp Southeast Introducing Summer Camp South, FAEA’s 2025 Summer Workshops for professional development! Join FAEA this summer in Southeast Florida for three creative and exciting hands-on learning workshops. This is a great opportunity to learn new artistic skills, network with other art educators and professionals, and see outstanding art collections and exhibitions.

Each workshop is $50 for FAEA members, and non-members pay an additional $10 flat fee. Participants can register for one or more of the following workshops. Visit FAEA.org to learn more and register to attend.

June 20, 2025 Watercolor Workshop: It’s All About H2Ocolor!

Boca Raton Museum of Art Presenters: Timothy Leistner, EdD & Gerald Obregon

Enjoy a full day focused on watercolor painting at the Boca Raton Museum of Art. FAEA members will delight in a focused tour of watercolor paintings on view at the Museum. Attendees will sketch in the galleries to capture possible ideas for painting. After the lunch break, dive into watercolor workshops! Try your hand at Watercolor Exploratory Abstract using watercolor pencils and paints with Timothy Leistner. Dr. Leistner directs participants to utilize their senses in this playful and skill-building session. Gerald Obregon focuses on watercolor coupled with other media. Educators will participate in both workshops.

Establishing a local art education association in your area can enhance the community of educators, students, and advocates who appreciate the significance of visual arts. As the Local Art Education Association Liaison for the Florida Art Education Association and the Past President of the Pinellas Arts Education Association, I’ve witnessed firsthand how these supportive networks empower both educators and students, creating a lasting influence on art education.

Reflecting on the importance of local art education associations brings me back to my own experience as an art educator. Teaching art goes beyond simply introducing students to various techniques or mediums; it’s about helping them discover their voices, build self-confidence, and forge connections with the world around them. Through art, students learn to express their emotions, communicate ideas, and explore their unique identities. As educators, we bear the responsibility not only to impart these skills but also to advocate for the value of art in an educational landscape that often prioritizes academic achievement. We must remind others of the essential role that creative expression plays in a well-rounded education. Here is where a local art education association can truly make a difference.

When initiating a local art education organization, it’s important to adopt a forward-thinking vision grounded in best practices. Focus on advocacy, professional development, and equitable access to arts education to create a roadmap for your art community. A local association can tailor these goals to meet the specific needs and challenges of your region while aligning with the broader mission of art education in Florida.

Advocacy and professional development should be at the forefront of any local association. By uniting as a collective voice, art educators can effectively communicate the significance of art education to school boards, administrators, and the wider community. Advocacy initiatives, such as student art exhibitions or community art projects, showcase the talent and creativity of our students while opening the eyes of decision-makers to the profound impact of art education. Simultaneously, professional development is crucial for keeping edu-

cators inspired and effective. Your organization could offer tailored workshops, networking events, and resources that cater to the specific needs of teachers in your area. From my experience attending state and national conferences, I return invigorated with new ideas to implement in the classroom. A local association can provide that same sense of renewal and growth for educators without the need for extensive travel.

Building a sense of community is another essential aspect. Teaching can sometimes feel isolating, especially for art educators who may be the only ones in their schools focusing on this discipline. A local association fosters camaraderie, allowing educators to share successes, tackle challenges, and support one another in their efforts to make a difference. Personally, some of my most valuable professional relationships have come through these connections, serving as sources of inspiration and encouragement throughout my career.

Moreover, a local art education association can play a crucial role in promoting equity and inclusion.

Your association can strive to ensure that all students, regardless of their backgrounds, have access to high-quality art education. This might involve organizing community outreach initiatives, hosting workshops on culturally responsive teaching, or advocating for resources in underfunded schools. Art possesses a unique ability to bridge divides and unite people, making a local association a powerful advocate for equity within your community.

Establishing a local art education association is not merely about forming an organization; it’s about creating a legacy to be proud of. It’s about ensuring that art remains a vital and celebrated component of education in your area. It’s about supporting educators, empowering students, and advocating for a future where creativity is valued as much as any other skill. Nestled just 20 miles north of St. Petersburg, the Safety Harbor Art and Music Center—affectionately known as SHAMc—is a vibrant haven of creativity and community. If you’re attending the 2025 FAEA Conference, consider this whimsical wonderland a must-visit destination!

A Vision Rooted in “YES!” SHAMc’s story begins with the dynamic duo, the Whimzey Twins—Ki-

aralinda and Todd Ramquist. The two met in art class at Safety Harbor Middle School. In 1983, they embarked on an artistic journey together, buying an unremarkable beige abode. Whimzeyland, over time, has blossomed into an artistic oasis that started with a bold decision: painting the front door purple. Their philosophy is to say YES! because YES is way more fun than saying no!

Their passion for fostering creativity led them to host an array of art hap-

penings, often taking place in a gazebo adorned with bird cages, disco balls, and chandeliers. Most of these events were house concerts, bringing in national music acts and sharing their love of live music. As the demand for a dedicated creative space grew, they, along with SHAMc Co-Founder and master mosaic artist Heather Richardson, over 300 devoted community volunteers, and a generous Pepsi grant, turned the historical Rigsby Home into what we

now know as SHAMc. Since its grand opening eight years ago, SHAMc has maintained the YES and expanded ever since.

A Kaleidoscope of Creative Offerings SHAMc is an immersive art experience where every corner sparks the imagination. From live music events to the onsite art shop, ARTery (featuring works by 50 local artists), inspiration

abounds. A hub for learning, SHAMc offers weekly and monthly classes in pottery, mosaics, collage, and mixed media taught by locally and nationally recognized professional artists. Budding artists can embark on a journey of artistic discovery through programs designed by blending art, music, literacy, and mindfulness.

Summer Camps That Spark Creativity

For young creators, ages 7-14, SHAMc’s summer camps offer a playground of possibilities: • Fine Arts Camp – Campers explore the elements and principles of design while learning about influential artists throughout history. They create their artwork using professional materials and learn fundamental artistic techniques.

ations. They craft unique sculptures, puppets, and games both individually and as a team.

• Upcycled Fashion Camp – Campers transform everyday clothing

SHAMc proudly offers programming for all ages, from Pre-K to 12th grade, focusing on enriching young minds through creativity and hands-on art experiences that promote expression and social-emotional wellness.

As an educator and practicing artist, Ms. Pearson also develops and implements professional development programs for Pre-K through 12th-grade educators, ensuring that art remains a powerful tool for communication, collaboration, and leadership. Recent work-

shops have empowered gifted educators to harness the transformative power of art in their teaching practices.

COLLABORATION GOES BEYOND YOUR DISTRICT

By Skylar Nicholson, Art Teacher at Country Oaks Elementary in Hendry County and FAEA Exhibitions, Advocacy and Professional Development Committee Member Being an art teacher in a rural district is a little like stepping into a studio with a blank canvas and a wild imagination, it's a little daunting, but brimming with potential and guaranteed to get messy in every possible way! I work in a county that has six elementary art teachers, evenly split between the east and west sides of the district. A 40-minute stretch of farmland divides us, making collaboration challenging, although necessary. The start of my first year as an elementary art teacher, the other elementary art teachers and I agreed to collaborate quarterly, trading ideas like paint swatches to improve ourselves and elevate our students. On paper, it was a masterpiece in the making. In reality? Let’s just say our personalities clashed harder than clashing colors on a palette—different teaching styles, varying priorities, and differing levels of flexibility didn’t help. Even our shared pilgrimage to the FAEA Conference couldn’t blend us into a cohesive team. Our own ideas on what ‘collaboration’ actually meant, combined with clashing communication styles, left me with a mix of frustration and unmet expectations. But just when I thought the composition was complete, life decided to add a new color to my palette.

My first time at the FAEA Conference, I met someone who would become my best friend and biggest collaborator: Ms. Lindsey Wuest. From the moment we started talking, it felt like discovering a dandelion crayon in a box of mixed colors. Ms. Wuest shared my passion for art education, silliness, and Forensic Files. As if fate was adding its own brushstrokes, we discovered we had the same car and

that she lived just down the street from my aunt. The first day we met, we stayed up late swapping classroom stories and laughing about the kind of chaos only an art teacher would understand. When the conference ended, our conversations didn’t end. We texted constantly, shared lesson plans, and cheered each other on through the highs and lows of our lives inside and outside the classroom. Having Lindsey as a personal cheerleader was a game-changer. Looking back, I’m not sure how I managed before she came along.

She quickly became my creative compass, guiding me out of the isolation I’d felt and toward a more collaborative, inspired approach to teaching. We share everything, from advice on classroom management and lesson planning to tips on the best time to hit the beach.

The highlight of our friendship so far is the massive curriculum we co-created: The F.A.M.E (Fine Arts Masterful Exhibition) art show. We worked for months on implementing the same lessons with our students. We visited each other's school to teach one lesson and witness our teaching in action. Our districts took notice, praising the incredible work we had produced together and recognizing it as, “A new benchmark for what partnerships could achieve”.

With the lessons of my first year fresh in my mind and a newfound confidence from my partnership with Lindsey, I approached year two at my school and at the FAEA Conference with a clear sense of purpose. Lindsey encouraged me to submit a proposal for the conference about my quirky classroom management techniques and my unique method of explaining art supplies to my

students. Taking the stage to share my ideas was both nerve-wracking and exhilarating, but the experience connected me with others who shared my enthusiasm for teaching art. Lindsey and I made it our mission to deepen those connections. Slowly but surely, those initial acquaintances I met the previous year turned into something deeper.

It was as if the conference was a giant artist’s palette and I was blending colors to create something vibrant and new on the canvas of collaboration.

My second year at the FAEA conference, I began fostering relationships with other art educators I had met the previous year. We formed a loose network of creative minds, sharing resources and brainstorming ideas across the state. One of those connections, a teacher from Tampa, encouraged me to join committees for the association because she “likes the way I think” and directed me to write this article.

Another from Duval County shared that she believed I would make a great leader and suggested I consider becoming the elementary chair. Their belief in me not only boosted my confidence but also inspired me to strive to be a better teacher and person. These connections nurtured my growth and gave me the encouragement I didn’t know I needed.

By the end of the 2024 conference, I no longer felt like an outsider looking in. I had found a wonderful community of collaborative art friends—a group of thoughtful and passionate educators who genuinely understood the unique challenges and joys of teaching art.

2025 YAM Flag Raine Ago I’ve Got Your Back Painting Orange County

2025 YOUTH ART MONTH Youth Art Month (YAM), headed by the Council for Art Education, is a national arts advocacy program celebrated annually during the month of March. The purpose of YAM is to advocate the importance of visual arts education in all schools. One of the hallmarks of YAM is the nationwide Flag & Banner Program, where state Art Education Associations hold student artwork competitions for the design of their state’s YAM Flag utilizing the national theme. The winning design for each state is made into a flag for display at the YAM Museum during the National Art Education Association (NAEA) Convention.

FAEA proudly participates in the annual YAM Flag & Banner Program and is pleased to have Orange County student Raine Ago’s artwork, I’ve Got Your Back, incorporated into the design for Florida’s 2025 YAM Flag.

The winner of the flag design competition was decided in December of 2024 by the FAEA membership who voted for their top choice from a pool of eight fantastic student artworks that utilized this year’s theme, Healing Through Color. The 2025 YAM Flag featuring Raine’s artwork represented the state of Florida at the NAEA Convention in March and was displayed alongside other winning state designs.

FROM THE FIELD offering everything from moral support on “what’s going on with these kids” days to celebrating each other’s student success stories. Each person brought their own perspective and expertise, enriching my teaching and encouraging me to push boundaries in my classroom.

I hope I’ve done the same for them, knowing that even the smallest contribution can spark something greater.

Lindsey and I had a wild idea: why not create a collaborative art show centered around a research question? It was ambitious, slightly chaotic, and absolutely unforgettable—a perfect mix of beautiful aesthetics with a dash of santeria, the kind of unpredictable magic where you’re the apprentice, helplessly watching the broom fill bucket after bucket of water.

Our students’ artwork was a spectacle.

Seeing their pieces displayed side by side was a profound reminder of why we do what we do. Sure, some of the student outcomes were, let’s say, “abstract interpretations,” but every student learned something and created something uniquely their own. Our big research question quietly slipped into the background—mostly because we realized we didn’t actually conduct proper research—but that didn’t matter. We’d done something bigger. We’d pulled off a collaborative, science-themed art show involving over 2,000 students from both the east and west coasts of Florida. It wasn’t perfect, but it was ours, and it was absolutely something to be proud of.

Now, the annual collaborative art show has become a cornerstone of our friendship. It’s not only a celebration of student creativity but also a spark for our shared passion for our profession and our friendship. We start tossing

around theme ideas in the summer. By fall, we’ve landed on a theme, brainstormed projects, and decided which grade levels will participate. By spring, the entire show is planned and ready to go. This year is particularly exciting because Lindsey attended an advanced conference on research data collection.

Since we’ve got the art show process down to a science, we’re focusing on using research to better understand our students. For me, the show serves as a yearly reminder of how far I’ve come— from feeling separated and disconnected to being part of a vital, supportive network that spans the state of Florida.

Gone are the days of feeling isolated—now, I’m embraced by a vibrant community of creative companions who challenge, inspire, and push me to grow every day. Among them is a friend I deeply admire and trust, someone who’s become both a role model and a confidant. My FAEA friends all have become my muses, infusing my teaching with fresh ideas and bold perspectives.

The district-wide collaboration I initially dreamed of didn’t pan out, but in true artistic fashion, something even more beautiful emerged. I’ve cultivated and became a part of a vibrant community that not only lifts me up, but also each other up, celebrates our wins, and reminds me why I love being an art teacher. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that the best connections aren’t always the ones you plan for—they’re the happy little accidents that turn a good canvas into a masterpiece.

When you’re open to new friendships, you’re never painting alone—so pick up your brush, mix in some bold colors, and see what masterpiece you create with like minded friends near and far.
