It seems as though we are always worried about time – where did it go, what time is it, or how much more time do we have. Time never slows down or speeds up when we want it to. It continues to pass second by second, minute by minute, hour by hour.

As time passes by, our lives change and our priorities and interests change because of the experiences we encounter along the way. We have seen that happen for the Community Foundation as well. As we’ve grown over the past 25 years, both in asset size and experience, our ability to address the needs in the community has changed along with us. Luckily for us, the Foundation has a very long time horizon ahead and will be here for this community as it goes through many more changes and addresses future needs.

We understand, though, that time horizons for donors are different. When you’re young and have a family, your focus will probably be on your children. As the children get older, your focus may turn towards scholarships as you experience the expense of college. Then, as you find yourselves getting older, your focus may turn towards thinking about the kind of legacy you’d like to leave.

The wonderful thing about the Community Foundation is that we can play a role throughout time and the many cycles of life depending on the needs and wishes of donors. Whether donors choose to take part in Future Fund to help meet the needs of children, establish a scholarship fund, or leave a legacy that serves a specific Thomas W. Matt Davis is a wonderful example of how Communities in Schools helps students stay in school and graduate. Matt came to CIS for help early his senior year in high school with the dream of attending McMurry University, but there were a few obstacles in the way.

In February 2011, Matt’s father was released from prison where he had spent the past 7 years. His father moved into Matt’s home and soon told Matt he had to move out immediately. He wanted Matt to grow up and learn to support himself. In searching for a place Communities in to live, Matt slept in Red Bud Park Schools helps playground during some very cold turn students nights. Matt soon talked to his around and go CIS campus coordinator about his from dropping situation.

The goal of CIS is to “surround students with community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.” An extensive five-year nationwide evaluation found that CIS is the most effective dropout prevention program in America, and there is no other program like it in Abilene. CIS Case Managers help turn students around and go from failing to passing, from dropping out to going to college.

Matt was accepted into McMurry, and his CIS counselor worked with him and the financial aid department to help Matt pay for his education. He also suggested Matt apply for one of the Community Foundation scholarships.

Matt received the Ruth and Bill Burton Memorial Scholarship to finance his education.

Things may have looked hopeless for Matt Davis, but with the help of Communities in Schools and CFA, Matt is now a first generation college student.

The Abilene Summer Music Festival Orchestra Camp is held each summer at the Hardin-Simmons University campus for students grades 6 to 12. The camp’s goal is to provide orchestral and chamber music educational opportunities for students through advanced instruction in a fun and supportive environment.

Camp organizers believe West Texas benefits when our young people learn more about classical music. Last summer, 104 students participated in the camp, where Festival highlights included three symphony orchestras, conducting, and music theory and composition classes with lots of recreation. The camp centered around the repertoire of Dvornak’s “New World” Symphony and My dream is Marquez Danzon No. 2. to play in a The Community Foundation of professional Abilene supported the ASMF orchestra with student scholarships from someday.

Martinez “Earning a scholarship to ASMF gave me the chance to attend the camp and expand my musical horizon,” Alexandria Martinez, a high school student said. “I was fortunate enough to get to work with amazing teachers that I would not have been able to work with otherwise.”

“As parents, we were frustrated that children today are inundated with all kinds of messages about being consumers – to want for themselves rather than give of themselves,” said Cathie Coleman.

That’s what David and Cathie Galbraith Coleman remember thinking for their two boys when it came time for Christmas shopping last year. “Putting a cell phone in their pocket and the ‘right’ shoes on their feet will never provide long-term happiness,” Cathie said. As a mom and a financial planner, Cathie is familiar with teaching how to be financially fit. “We teach our boys to make prudent decisions, save a portion, invest it, and grow it for a future goal. We want to teach them to be financially wise and to make good stewards in the community, and to give to make the world a better place.”

We want our children to be aware of what is going on in our community ... and how they can help others.

The Colemans knew at an early age their son Drake had a giving heart, so it was no surprise when he began noticing that other kids in his class needed things, and he wanted to help. He was a little boy with a big dream.

With the holiday season approaching, the Colemans realized the best gift they could give Drake would be one that would help fulfill his desire to help other people. Since both David and Cathie have been active in Community Foundation of Abilene’s Future Fund, turning to CFA was a – David Coleman natural step. “We knew we wanted something Drake could be involved in, have ideas about, and be able to make decisions around,” Cathie said. “A Donor Advised Fund was the perfect choice for Drake, and something he could share with his brother Sam.” On Christmas morning, Drake was given a very special gift – one that he will have for a lifetime. Not only does the Coleman Fund bring a smile to his face, but also the faces of those who will benefit from his grants. “The gift of knowledge is the best gift we can give our children,” David said, “we want our children to be aware of what is going on in our community ... and how they can help.”

“ Disability Resources, Inc. has been enormously blessed by the generosity of our friends and donors….individuals, foundations, and corporations alike. In order to keep our services affordable for our families, we rely on our supporters to help us bridge the gap.”

Disability Resources, Inc. provides residential care, vocational training and recreational activities for developmentally disabled individuals in a loving, homelike environment. Because the folks are unable to drive, the organization’s van is of paramount importance to use in outings all over Abilene.

“Imagine our sleepless nights when one of our 10-year old vans with 96,000 miles began to have transmission problems,” Lisa, a house manager at DRI said. “The thought of the stalled van sitting on the side of the road filled with our stranded and distraught folks was a major concern for us at DRI. The Community Foundation of Abilene came to our rescue!”

Through a grant from the Foundation’s Unrestricted Funds, DRI now has reliable transportation to take people to doctor appointments, church services and other off-campus activities.

Submitting a Grant Request The Community Foundation accepts letters of intent and proposals twice a year for its Discretionary grants. Grant applicants must serve the people of the Abilene community, must be a 501(c)(3) organization and work in the areas of health, human services, fine arts, children or youth, and education or civic development. COLEMAN COUNTY FOUNDATION — Established in 1999, the Coleman County Foundation is providing a means for Coleman County residents to make a difference in their community. Over the past 11 years, the Foundation has awarded more than $461,000 in grants to agencies in Coleman County.

Friends of the Coleman County Foundation is a group of individuals who believe in the future of the Coleman area.

NOLAN COUNTY FOUNDATION — The Nolan County Foundation Fund was launched in 2000 by county civic leaders wanting to make a positive impact in Sweetwater and Nolan County. AUDIT The Foundation annually engages the services of an indepedent accounting firm to perform an auit of the Foundation’s Financial Statements. As part of their audit, the firm also reviews the internal controls and various policies and procedures to ensure the Foundation staff is adhering to the most current accounting practices. The Foundation’s auditor, Condley and Company, LLP, Certified Public Accountants, has issued an unqualified opinion on the Financial Statements for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2011. Audits and IRS Form 990’s are available upon request.

INVESTMENT PROCESS The Foundation is focused on a long term strategy for investing the community’s philanthropic dollars. We understand that endowments are created to serve not only the current generation but many generations to come. The Community Foundation continues to stay the course and remains fully invested and diversified.
