On Dash On meeting Dash for the first time, you don’t get the impression that he is from our time. Dash, born in 1981, does not seem like a man of the year 2007. With his long hair, his hippie sunglasses and his clothes, his preference for the music of the late 1960s and the whole psychedelic sound, Dash seems someone who was catapulted from the 1960s into our time. And that is of course no coincidence, but rather a conscious revenge against an idiotic time. Or, to be more precise, against two idiotic decades.

Dash Snow is a child of the eighties, and they were, despite all the Miami Vicelike pastel craziness, at their core a dark and melancholy decade. It was the decade of Reagonomics and Thatcherism, the decade of the insane arms race, people had no social utopias anymore, but instead they were afraid: afraid of losing their work, afraid of the new Batemans who would mercilessly rationalise them away, afraid of nuclear war and forest dieback, and then, in the mid-eighties, the fear of AIDS came on top of it all. Work, love, life: everything was under existential threat. That was the time into which Dash was born; the year he turned twenty was 2001, which was the beginning of a new era of fear and hysteria – the so-called millennium years will be remembered as a decade characterised by the war against terror, fear of Islamism, and a general sense of exhaustion. In the cities, architecture summoned up the good old days; new forms hardly developed.

It is clear that you ask yourself in such a time where and how to go on, what to take as your own starting point and it is not surprising – and indeed rather likable – that Dash Snow simply decided to leave his own time temporarily to delve, like an archaeologist, into the depths of the 1960s and 1920s to explore how an era works that believes in experimentation, in the future, and in itself. Dash frequently works with old, yellowed paper that he tears from old books or finds somewhere. On this paper, he glues collages of words and images – and the results look as if the beat poets had collaborated with Max Ernst.

Wild physical desires encounter phrases from the press, cut-out word fragments run like worried policemen of meaning across naked bodies. Of course that’s not always original, but it is necessary. By turning himself into Kerouac and Max Ernst, by assuming their role and their aesthetics, he seeks the mechanics of an optimistic awakening, the wild, buoyant, highly energetic anarchy that characterised the eras of Ernst and Kerouac and that is so sadly missing today. Perhaps we get closest to Dash’s method by using the rich German term Verdichtung.

Verdichten means on the one hand to condense, to shorten, clarify; on the other hand it means to kidnap objects from the everyday world of prose into the realm of

poetry – and poetry is, according to the original Greek meaning of the word poeisis, nothing other than the ‘art of bringing forth’. What is here being brought forth and clarified in Dash’s poetical collages? Dash condenses words and images of our time, the newspaper headlines, the pictures of naked women and of the great criminals into Dadaist formulas which suddenly, almost violently, sum up all the promises and crimes of our day. The word collages are also Verdichtung: they disassemble the headlines into single components and squeeze them together into nonsense messages, – thus bringing hidden truths and desires to light.

They are pictures that counter the large political ideologies, the Iraq War, the West’s promises of happiness, wealth, sex, and power, with images of an individual Gegenglueck that cannot be grasped with the images and collective promises of salvation made by politics and advertising. This counter-happiness can also be found in the finesse of the materials – when he glues a word onto a piece of wood, thus underlaying and charging the meaning of the abstract term through the direct sensuousness of the grained material. There are many melancholy gestures in Dash’s works, yellowed paper, a black-and-white aesthetic, as well as vanitas motifs, skulls, death symbols. But Dash does not surrender to this melancholy, he does not celebrate it, he counters it with emanations of a wild vibrancy and of absolute happiness in the here and now: images of kissing nudes, traces of sperm, pictures of wild excess, and this antidote is also an outcry against the time that allowed itself to be completely lulled and now lies exhausted on the ground. How could the energy and verve of Dada, surrealism, and the beat generation, how could the optimistic energy of the twenties and sixties be translated into our time? That is the question that comes to mind when encountering Dash’s work, be it his collages or the Polaroids he made of himself and his friends, an atlas of the great odyssey to adulthood. And the fact that Dash, the archaeologist of happiness and hero of the immediate moment does not always answer these questions doesn’t matter all that much. He's only 26; he still has time to find answers.

Über Dash Wenn man Dash das erste Mal trifft, denkt man nicht, dass er aus unserer Zeit stammt. Dash, geboren 1981, wirkt nicht wie ein Mann des Jahres 2007. Dash wirkt, mit seinen langen Haaren, mit seiner hippiesken Sonnenbrille und seiner Kleidung, mit seiner Vorliebe für die Musik der späten sechziger Jahre und den ganzen psychedelischen Sound, wie jemand, der aus den sechziger Jahren in unsere Zeit katapultiert wurde. Und das ist natürlich kein Zufall, sondern eine bewusste Rache an einer dummen Zeit. Oder, genauer gesagt, zwei dummen Dekaden.

Dash Snow ist ein Kind der achtziger Jahre, und die waren, bei allem MiamiVice-artigen Pastellwahnsinn, im Kern ein düsteres und melancholisches Jahrzehnt: Es war das Jahrzehnt der Reagonomics und des Thatcherism, das Jahrzehnt des wahnsinnigen Wettrüstens, die Leute hatten keine sozialen Utopien mehr, sondern Angst: Angst vor dem Verlust ihres Arbeitsplatzes, Angst vor dem neuen Typus der Batemans, die sie gnadenlos wegsanieren würden, Angst vor dem Atomkrieg und dem Waldsterben, und dann kam, Mitte der Achtziger, auch noch die Angst vor Aids dazu. Arbeit, Liebe, Leben: alles war existentiell bedroht. Das also war die Zeit, in die Dash hineingeboren wurde; das Jahr, in dem er zwanzig wurde war das Jahr 2001, das den Beginn einer neuen Angst-und-Hysteriezeit einläutete: Die sogenannten Millenium Years werden im Gedächtnis bleiben als das Jahrzehnt, das vom Krieg gegen den Terror, von Islamismusangst und einer allgemeinen Entkräftung geprägt war: in den Städten wurde architektonisch die heile alte Welt beschworen, neue Formen entstanden fast nicht.

Es ist klar, dass man sich in einer solchen Zeit fragt, wie und wo es weitergeht; an was man anknüpfen kann – und es ist kein Wunder und sehr sympathisch, dass Dash Snow einfach beschloss, seine Zeit vorübergehend zu verlassen und, wie ein Archäologe, in die Tiefen der sechziger und der zwanziger Jahre abzutauchen und zu erforschen, wie eine Zeit funktioniert, die ans Experiment, an die Zukunft und an sich selbst glaubt. Dash arbeitet viel mit altem, vergilbtem Papier, das er aus alten Büchern reisst oder irgendwo findet. Auf diese Papiere klebt er Kollagen aus Worten und Bildern – und das Ergebnis sieht aus, als hätten die Beat-Poeten mit Max Ernst zusammengearbeitet.

Wilde körperliche Begierden stoßen auf Pressephrasen, ausgeschnittene Wortfragmente laufen wie besorgte Polizisten des Sinns über die nackten Körper.

Natürlich ist das nicht immer originell – aber es ist notwendig. Denn indem Dash sich zu Kerouac und Max Ernst macht, indem er in ihre Rolle, ihre Ästhetik schlüpft, forscht er nach der Mechanik des Aufbruchs, der wilden, lebensfrohen,

hochenergetischen Anarchie, die Ernsts und Kerouacs Zeit prägte und die unserer Zeit so fehlt. Am nähesten kommt man Dashs Methode mit dem Wort der “Verdichtung”. Verdichten heisst einerseits komprimieren, verkürzen, deutlicher machen, andererseits bedeutet es, Dinge aus dem Feld der alltäglichen Prosa in den Raum der Poesie zu entführen – und Poesie ist, nach dem griechischen Ursinn des Wortes Poeisis, nichts anderes als die “Kunst der Hervorbringung”. Was wird hier, in den poetischen Kollagen von Dash, hervorgebracht und deutlich gemacht? Dash komprimiert Worte und Bilder unserer Gegenwart, die Headlines der Zeitungen, die Bilder nackter Frauen und die der großen Gangster, zu dadaistischen Formeln, die plötzlich, fast gewaltsam, die Versprechen und die Verbrechen unserer Zeit auf den Punkt bringen. Auch die Wortkollagen sind Verdichtung: Sie zerlegen die Schlagzeilen in Einzelteile, quetschen diese zu Nonsens-Botschaften zusammen – und bringen so versteckte Wahrheiten und Begierden ans Licht.

Es sind Bilder, die die großen politischen Ideologien, den Irakkrieg, die Glücksversprechen des Westens, Reichtum, Sex und Macht, die Slogans von Werbung und Medien konterkarieren mit Bildern eines individuellen Gegenglücks, das sich mit den Bildern und kollektiven Heilsversprechen von Politik und Werbung nicht fassen lässt. Dieses Gegenglück findet man auch in der Finesse der Materialien – wenn er ein Wort auf ein Stück Holz klebt und so die Bedeutung des abstrakten Begriffs durch die unmittelbare Sinnlichkeit des gemaserten Materials unterlegt und auflädt. Es gibt viele melancholische Gesten in Dashs Arbeiten, vergilbtes Papier, Schwarzweißästhetik, dazu Vanitasmotive, Schädel, Todessymbole. Doch Dash gibt sich dieser Melancholie nicht hin, er feiert sie nicht, er hält gegen sie die Emanationen einer wüsten Lebendigkeit und des absoluten Glücks im Hier und Jetzt: Bilder von küssenden Nackten, Spermaspuren, Bilder wüster Exzesse, und dieses Gegengift ist auch ein Vorwurf an die Zeit, die sich komplett hat einlullen lassen und nun entkräftet am Boden liegt. Wie könnte der Elan von Dada, Surrealismus und Beat Generation, wie könnte die Aufbruchsenergie der zwanziger und sechziger Jahre in unsere Zeit übersetzt werden: Das ist die Frage, die man sich vor Dashs Arbeiten stellt, vor seinen Kollagen wie vor den Polaroids, die er von sich und seinen Freunden machte und die der Atlas einer großen Odyssee ins Erwachsenwerden sind – und dass Dash, der Glücksarchäologe und Held des unmittelbaren Moments, diese Fragen nicht immer beantwortet, ist nicht schlimm: er ist erst 26 Jahre alt; er hat noch Zeit, Antworten zu finden.

We are proud to publish this book on the occasion of Dash Snow's first solo show in Europe. This is the first catalogue by and about Dash Snow.

Dash Snow was born in 1981; he lives and works in New York.

The presentation at our gallery from 27 April to 23 June 2007 assembled works from 2006 and 2007. Apart from assemblages and sculptures that address themes like excess and withdrawal, love and transience, the artist showed around 200 new collages, all of which are reproduced in this book.

Most of the collages are done using the empty pages of books bought in second-hand bookstores; the covers of these books, inside and out, are also used as supports for text and photo collages. The natural ageing process gave the paper a noble patina, which the artist utilises quite consciously.

It gives the textual works a certain validity that transcends time. The same is true of the text collages that he mounts on pieces of wood.

The photo collages, using often hard-to-bear photographs, gain a simply timeless, rather austere beauty through the paper, in the sense of ‘the world is bad, but it was and is the only one we have’.

If once Hannah Höch ‘cut with the kitchen knife Dada through Germany's last Weimar beer-gut era', then today Dash Snow cuts with a knife through an ailing US that is led by a caricature of a president.

Snow’s Saddam Series – the artist ejaculates onto 20 title pages with the face of the Iraqi dictator and then sprinkles glitter onto it – shows the artist’s revulsion at the US victor mentality that went hand in hand with Saddam’s sentencing.

The artist fights the bigotry of the mass media with its own weapons. He very consciously uses the typology and language of the tabloids. But in contrast to the sources he references, he does not accuse, nor does he divide the world into good and evil. Often a certain ‘sympathy for the devil’ is closer to his heart than any kind of moralistic attitude. He demonstrates – that is to say, he observes and shows – but does not assume a position himself. The intelligence and autonomy of the beholder are posited as given, and demanded by the artist. Dash Snow’s art is political, yet he is not a ‘political artist’.

The exhibition, only Snow’s third solo show, was preceded by such an extraordinary media hype – rarely did the private life and the past of a young artist receive such attention, and rarely was his artistic work ignored to such a degree – that this should be stressed at the end.

With great vehemence, this exhibition countered this hype with a body of works that shows an extraordinary sense of mission, industriousness, and a remarkable maturity.

Anlässlich der ersten Einzelausstellung des Künstlers Dash Snow in Europa sind wir stolz die vorliegende Publikation herauszugeben. Bei diesem Werk handelt es sich um den ersten Katalog von und über Dash Snow.

Dash Snow wurde 1981 geboren, er lebt und arbeitet in New York.

Die Präsentation, die vom 27. April bis zum 23. Juni 2007 in unserer Galerie stattfand, versammelte Arbeiten aus den Jahren 2006 und 2007. Neben Assemblagen und Skulpturen, die Exzess und Rückzug, Liebe und Vergänglichkeit thematisieren, zeigte der Künstler um die 200 neue Collagen, die sämtlich in diesem Buch abgebildet sind.

Die meisten Collagen entstehen auf den unbedruckten Seiten antiquarisch erstandener Bücher, auch die Buchdeckel, Außenwie Innenseiten, werden als Untergrund für Text- und Fotocollagen genutzt. Der natürliche Alterungsprozess hat den Papieren eine edle Patina verliehen, die der Künstler ganz bewusst einsetzt. Sie verleiht den Textarbeiten eine gewisse, über die Zeit erhabene Gültigkeit. Das gleiche gilt für die Textcollagen, die er auf Holzstücken montiert.

Die Fotocollagen, mit ihren oft schwer zu ertragenden, vom Künstler collagierten Fotos, erhalten durch das Papier eine schlicht zeitlose, eher herbe Schönheit im Sinne von „die Welt ist schlecht, aber sie war und ist die einzige, die wir haben“. „Schnitt“ weiland Hannah Höch „mit dem Küchenmesser Dada durch die letzte Weimarer Bierbauchkulturepoche Deutschlands“, so schneidet heute Dash Snow mit dem Cutter durch eine, von der Karikatur eines Präsidenten geführten, an sich selbst krankenden USA. Der „Saddam Serie“ Snows – auf 20 mit dem Konterfei des irakischen Diktators aufgemachten Titelseiten ejakuliert der Künstler und streut anschließend Dekorglitzer darüber – ist der Ekel des Künstlers an der US-amerikanischen Siegermentalität anzumerken, mit welcher die Verurteilung Saddams einherging.

Der Künstler schlägt die Bigotterie der Massenmedien mit ihren eigenen Waffen. Er setzt die Typologie und Sprache der Boulevardpresse dezidiert ein. Jedoch klagt er im Gegensatz zu seinen Bezugsquellen nicht an, teilt die Welt nicht in Gut und Böse. Oft ist ihm eine gewisse „Sympathy for the Devil“ näher als die Moralkeule. Er demonstriert – beobachtet also und zeigt auf – bezieht jedoch keine Stellung. Intelligenz und Autonomie des Betrachters wird vorausgesetzt und eingefordert. Dash Snows Kunst ist politisch, jedoch ist er kein „politischer Künstler“.

Der Ausstellung, erst die dritte Einzelpräsentation des Künstlers, ging ein solch außergewöhnlicher „Medienhype“ voraus – selten wurde dem Privatleben und der Vergangenheit eines jungen Künstlers so viel Aufmerksamkeit zuteil, selten wurde die künstlerische Arbeit dabei so außer Acht gelassen – dass dies hier abschließend noch einmal Erwähnung finden soll.

Dem wurde mit der Ausstellung mit ungeheurer Wucht ein Werk hinzugefügt, das von einer außergewöhnlichen Mission, von Fleiß (sic!) und einer bemerkenswerten Reife getragen ist.
