Waiting for the Barbarians Dem Publikum auf der Weltausstellung 1854 in New York stockte der Atem, als Elisha Graves Otis begann, mit einer Axt herumzufuchteln. Gerade erst hatte der amerikanische Mechaniker einen Lastenaufzug betreten und sich auf der Plattform in schwindelerregende Höhe hinaufziehen lassen. Schon das erschien waghalsig. Doch nun wollte er allen Ernstes das Tragseil kappen lassen. „All safe, Gentlemen!“, rief er, nachdem ein Gehilfe das Seil durchtrennt hatte, die Plattform mit seiner menschlichen Fracht aber nur einige Zentimeter nach unten gefallen war, weil eine Sicherheitsvorkehrung einrastete. Ein Jahr zuvor hatte Otis die Otis Elevator Company gegründet, bis heute der weltweit größte Produzent für Aufzugsanlagen.

Seitdem gilt der Lift als sicherstes Massentransportmittel überhaupt. Schon sprachlich verheißt der Name der Erfindung, die schließlich den Bau von Wolkenkratzern möglich machte, nur Positives. „Elevation“ wurde im Englischen meist im religiösen Kontext benutzt oder wenn es darum ging, in die Höhe zu gelangen, um eine Aussicht zu genießen. Und auch im Deutschen suggeriert das Wort Aufzug, dass es eigentlich nur nach oben geht.

Unsere Ängste berücksichtigt die Sprache nicht. Was wäre, wenn die Fangvorrichtung doch nicht funktionierte? Und was, wenn sich die Türen öffneten und dahinter nur ein dunkler Schacht gähnte? Wie wäre es, in der Fahrgastzelle stecken zu bleiben, über Stunden oder vielleicht Tage eingesperrt mit anderen Menschen auf engstem Raum?

Bei den Aufzug-Bildern von Dana Schutz weiß man nicht, ob es rauf oder runter geht.

Es geht eher drunter und drüber. In dem Moment, wo wir hinschauen, gehen die Türen auf. Diesen Augenblick stellt die amerikanische Malerin in ihrer Serie Fight in an Elevator dar. Links und rechts sehen wir zwei automatische Türen, metallisch spiegelnd, stark abstrahiert. In dem Spalt dazwischen, als ein Bild im Bild, erkennen wir ein bizarres Personal. Und wir blicken gleichzeitig in einen Abgrund – den des menschlichen Miteinanders, das im Ernstfall oft ein Gegeneinander ist.

In diesen Aufzügen möchte man nicht steckengeblieben sein. Hier ist nichts safe.

Im Bild Fight in an Elevator 4 hat ein Kampf bis aufs Blut stattgefunden. Man sieht abgetrennte Gliedmaßen. Eine Frau schnitzt mit ihrem Messer am Geschlecht eines Amputierten herum. Ein Mann duckt sich ins Dunkel, davor hängt eine entstellte Fratze von oben herab. Was mag hier Schreckliches vorgefallen sein?

Dana Schutz’ Ikonografie ist nicht so leicht zu entziffern. Während man versucht, ihren Erzählungen auf die Schliche zu kommen, mischt sich das eigene Bildgedächtnis immer wieder ein. Man schaut auf diese Bilder durch eine Folie der Kunstgeschichte.

Mündern ein Gesicht zusammensetzt. Erinnert sich an Beckmanns stark konturierte Figuren, die Enge seiner Bildräume. Fühlt sich wie im Panoptikum von Dix’ und Grosz’ Erfahrungen aus dem Ersten Weltkrieg, nur dass bei Schutz nichts neusachlich wirkt.

Und natürlich ist man schnell auch in der zeitgenössischen Figuration mit George Condos schrillen Visagen und Nicole Eisenmans komplexen Narrationen. Und dann will man doch wieder mitten hinein in die Geschichten von Schutz und versucht den Assoziationsballast, den sie auf unsere Schultern lädt, erst einmal wieder loszuwerden.

Noch so ein Gemetzel in Fight in an Elevator 5: Zwei aufgerissene Augenpaare starren uns an, als wäre man eingedrungen in eine Situation, die man weder beobachten noch in die man persönlich hineingezogen werden will. Hier wurde offenbar gerade ein Kopf abgeschlagen. Und sofort rastet die Sicherheitsvorkehrung im eigenen Kopf ein und lässt uns lieber an Judith und Holofernes denken oder an Salomé und Johannes den Täufer, an die beiden berühmten Enthauptungsgeschichten, die selbst Kinder in den Museen arglos konsumieren dürfen. Dass wir in einer Zeit leben, in der die Enthauptung auch in den Nachrichtensendungen im Fernsehen an der Tagesordnung ist, daran wollen wir lieber nicht denken.

Und so bietet uns Dana Schutz zwar Möglichkeiten des Auswegs aus ihren Bildern – aber immer nur in andere Bilder. Es ist nie so, dass man den Knopf drücken könnte und sagen: „OK, dieser Aufzug ist voll. Ich nehme den nächsten.“

Waiting for the Barbarians heißt die Ausstellung bei der Galerie Contemporary Fine Arts. Aber schnell macht sich das Gefühl breit, dass wir gar nicht mehr warten müssen. Die Barbarei ist längst omnipräsent. Auf den Leinwänden. An den Bildschirmen.

Auf den Schlachtfeldern. In den Regierungszentralen. Und wir sind immer mittendrin.

Nur mit dem Unterschied, dass wir bei Bildern der „modernen Medien“ viel besser gelernt haben wegzuschauen, wenn es blutig wird, oder hinzunehmen, was uns aufrütteln sollte. Wir wissen, wie wenig wir Fotografien und Filmaufnahmen trauen können und wollen uns in Sicherheit wiegen, und wenn es eine simulierte Sicherheit ist. Alles scheint in unserer heutigen Wirklichkeit vermeintlich geworden. Wir leben in postfaktischen Zeiten.

Dana Schutz nicht. Sie schafft Fakten. Malt mit jedem neuen, analogen, geradezu prähistorisch-dinglichen Gemälde gegen die digitale Bilderflut an. „Es ist wirklich wichtig, den Haufen Mist, den endlosen Strom kurzlebiger Bilder nicht noch größer werden zu lassen“, sagte sie in einem Interview mit der Kuratorin Chrissie Iles vom New Yorker Whitney Museum of American Art. Das war vor zwei Jahren. Heute würde sie das „kurzlebig“ wohl streichen.

Warum? Schauen wir auf Schutz’ Gemälde Shooting on the Air. Es zeigt den Moment einer Hinrichtung, den Täter von hinten, das Mündungsfeuer, die Opfer. Und wir sehen wie so oft bei Schutz ein Bild im Bild. Es zeigt den tödlichen Snapshot aus den Augen des Attentäters. Es war nämlich kein Schuss in die Luft, wie der Bildtitel zunächst

vermuten lässt, sondern tatsächlich ein Mord „on air“. Am 26. August 2015 wurden die Fernsehjournalisten Alison Parker und Adam Ward bei einem Interview vor laufender Kamera erschossen. Die Tat gilt als erster „Social-Media-Mord“, weil sich die Bilder so schnell auf Facebook und Twitter verbreiteten. Der Täter selbst hatte seine Tat außerdem gefilmt und im Internet veröffentlicht. Noch heute muss man nicht lange googeln, wenn man die Aufnahmen sehen will.

Live draufgehen. Das ist das unselige Ideal der Amokläufer und Selbstmordattentäter von heute, die um die mediale Wirkung ihrer Taten wissen. Und je häufiger wir zu digitalen Zeugen, Mitwissern, Vervielfältigern werden, desto mehr stumpfen wir ab.

Dana Schutz macht sich in ihrer Arbeit davon unabhängig. Und schnelle Bilder langlebig, nachhaltig eindrücklich. Etwa wenn sie in Open Casket ein Gewaltopfer eben nicht abbildet, sondern sich sein zerschundenes Gesicht regelrecht erarbeitet, Farbe zentimeterdick auftürmt, um dann einen Schlitz hineinzutreiben, als habe sie mit dem Beil zugeschlagen. Wenn in Crawling eine Art biblischer Plage über zwei Männer hereinbricht, wir bei Heuschrecken aber eher an die Wirtschaft denken müssen als ans Reich der Insekten. Oder wenn eine Big Wave auf ein spielendes Kinderpaar zu rauscht und dieses hinwegzuspülen droht, man aber erst nach und nach erkennt, wie viele Schiffbrüchige und Untergegangene diese Welle schon verschluckt hat.

Dass die Künstlerin dabei die Malereigeschichte von der parallelen Darstellungsweise mittelalterlicher Meister bis zu den perspektivischen Aufbiegungen der Moderne zitiert, ist immer wieder ein rettender Anker. Er hilft, sich bei der Anschauung von Dana Schutz’ vielschichtiger, schrecklich humorvoller Malerei immer einmal für kurze Zeit auf die Metaebene kunsthistorischer Gewissheit flüchten zu können. Aber auch dort sollte man sich nicht allzu sicher fühlen.

Waiting for the Barbarians The public at the 1854 world exhibition caught their breath when Elisha Graves Otis started to wave about an axe. Moments before, the American mechanic had entered a freight elevator and had himself pulled up on a platform to dizzying heights. That alone seemed daring, but now he actually wanted to cut the bearer cable.

“All safe, gentlemen!” he shouted after an assistant had severed the cable. The platform, with its human cargo, had only dropped a few centimeters because the safety mechanism took hold. A year before, Otis had founded the Otis Elevator Company, which to this day remains the largest producer of elevators in the world.

Ever since then, the elevator is considered the safest mode of mass transport. Even in terms of language, the name of the invention, which was to make the construction of skyscrapers possible, connotes only positive things. In English, “elevation” is used usually in a religious context, or when the goal is to gain some height to enjoy a view.

But our fears don’t care about language. What if the safety catch were to fail? And what if the doors opened, and behind them all we’d see was a dark shaft? What would it feel like to get stuck in the compartment, for hours or perhaps days locked in a confined space with other people?

Seeing the elevator paintings by Dana Schutz, we can’t tell whether they are going up or down. It’s all haywire. What we see is the very moment the doors open. The American painter captures precisely this moment in her series Fight in an Elevator. On the left and right, two highly abstracted automatic doors with a metallic sheen. In the opening between them, as a picture within the picture, we recognize rather bizarre personnel. And at the same time we look into an abyss: that of human coexistence which, when things get serious, is all too often human combat.

We certainly don’t want to get stuck in these elevators. Nothing is safe there. In the painting Fight in an Elevator 4, a rather bloody struggle has taken place. We see severed limbs. A woman is whittling away at the genitals of an amputee. One man is crouching in the dark; before him, a distorted grotesque face is suspended from above.

What terrible things happened there?

Dana Schutz’ iconography is not all that easy to decode. While we try to make sense of her narratives, our own pictorial memory keeps interfering. We look at these paintings through a foil of art history. We think of Picasso when a face is composed of lopsided noses, staring eyes, grimacing mouths. We are reminded of Beckmann’s strongly contoured figures and the tightness of his pictorial spaces. It feels like we are in the panopticon of Dix’ and Grosz’ experiences of WWI, only that with Schutz, nothing seems remotely like new objectivity.

And of course it is also easy to think here of contemporary figuration, like George Condo’s shrill visages and Nicole Eisenman’s complex narrations. But then we want to delve back into Schutz’ stories, and we try to get rid of the ballast of associations burdening our shoulders.

Another massacre on Fight in an Elevator 5: two pairs of wide-open eyes stare at us, as if we had actually penetrated a situation one neither wants to observe nor become personally involved in. Apparently, a head has just been cut off here. And immediately, the security catch in our own heads engages and makes us think of Judith and Holofernes, or Salome and John the Baptist, the two stories of decapitation that even children are allowed to consume innocently in museums. That we live in an age where decapitation is an everyday occurrence on the TV news is something we’d rather not think about.

And thus Dana Schutz offers possibilities of escape from her paintings—but only into other pictures. We can never just press the button and say, “Ok, this elevator is full, I’ll take the next one.”

Waiting for the Barbarians is the title of the exhibition at the gallery Contemporary Fine Arts. However we quickly get the impression that we don’t have to wait anymore. Barbarism has been omnipresent for quite a while already. On the canvases.

On the screens. On the battlefields. In the centers of government. And we are always right in the middle of it. The only difference is that with the images in the “modern media,” we have learned much better to look the other way when things get bloody, or to simply accept what should outrage us. We know how little we can trust photographs or filmed material, and we want to feel safe, even it is a simulated safety.

Everything in our contemporary reality seems to have become alleged. We live in post-factual times.

Not Dana Schutz. She creates facts. With every new, analogue, downright prehistorically urgent painting, she paints against the digital flood of images. “I think it’s important to not just add to the pile of crap, the endless stream of ephemeral images,“ she said in an interview with the curator Chrissy Iles of New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art. That was two years ago. Today, she would probably leave “ephemeral” out.

Why? Let’s take a look at Schutz’ painting Shooting on the Air. It shows the moment of an execution, the perpetrator from behind, the muzzle flash, the victims. And as happens so often with Schutz, we see a picture in the picture. It shows the deadly shot from the perspective of the assassin. It wasn’t a shot in the air, as we might mistakenly think after reading the title, but actually a murder “on air.” On August 25, 2015, the TV journalists Alison Parker and Adam Ward were shot dead during an interview, with the camera running. This is considered the first “social media murder,” because the images were distributed so fast on Facebook and Twitter. The murderer himself also filmed his attack, and published it on the Internet. To this day, it isn’t difficult to find those recordings if one really wants to see them.

Dying on air. That is the disastrous ideal of today’s people running amok, of the suicide assassins, who know all about the media impact of their deeds. And the more we become digital witnesses, tacit accessories, duplicators, the more numb we will become.

In her work, Dana Schutz liberates herself from that. She makes fast images longlived, and they leave a lasting impression. As when, for example, in Open Casket she precisely doesn’t depict a victim of violence, but rather works hard to create his maltreated face, piling the paint on thickly, only to then drive a slash into it, as if she had hit it with an axe. When in Crawling a kind of Biblical plague comes over two men, but today we think first of corporate raiders when we hear the term locust, rather than of the realm of insects. Or when a Big Wave rushes toward a pair of playing children, threatening to flush them away, but we see only slowly how many shipwrecked and drowned people this wave has already swallowed.

That the artist keeps referencing the history of painting, from the parallel depictions of medieval masters to the perspectival bendings of modernism, offers the beholder some respite. It is helpful that when we look at Dana Schutz’ complex, terribly humorous paintings, that we can always for a short moment flee to the meta-level of art historical certainty. But even there we shouldn’t feel all that safe.
