SUMMER IS COMING A message from the Faculty Program Director Thank you so much for subscribing to our newsletter! This issue is filled with news. Most importantly, we are presenting the four oversubscribed electives for which the alumni registration will be significantly shorter, and will close on July 1, 2pm Vienna time (CEST).

We feature each of these electives further in the issue. All in all, our current executive fellows are right – these are amazing classes. Go to emba.ceu.edu/MissMyCEU now to register for them before we run out of seats.

To be sure, the other 22 electives are also great, and for those, you can register by August 12.

If you have collected any discount vouchers, either by subscribing to this letter early, or through the EMBAdvocate program, keep in mind that a voucher is valid for the 2022 edition of the Alumni Course Offering and you can use it only subject to the availability of the seats. HOW IT WORKS Understanding the summer elective logistics

If you were a current CEU Executive MBA participant, you would take as many as four 900-minute (1,5-credit) electives during the summer module – and nine electives during your program altogether. That’s because our 26 summer electives are offered in four separate clusters.

The table above presents how the clusters are organized. In general, our summer module is nine-day, Saturday-to-Sunday. Clusters 1 and 2 are in the first half of the module, and Clusters 3 and 4 in the second half.

An EMBA fellow gets nine electives as our program includes three consecutive summer modules. In the inaugural summer module, however, students take only one elective, in Cluster 4. So if you take a course in this cluster, you will study alongside EMBAs from three cohorts: EMBA22, EMBA23, EMBA24.

On our elective shop page, emba.ceu.edu/MissMyCEU, we clearly indicate in which Cluster a given course is offered.

In each Cluster, we identified the “hot” course which has the longest waiting list of the current EMBA fellows. The description of these four courses is offered on the pages to follow. In order not to “waste” any seats in these hot courses, we will close the alumni registration for those electives on July 1, 2pm Vienna time (CEST).

STRATEGIC WRITING Our oversubscribed elective in Cluster 1.

Your courses on business strategy, finance, data analytics, innovation and operations provide the right ingredients for a successful business. But that’s not enough. The best plans can fail if they aren’t communicated in a way that is memorable and actionable.

Just as excellent storytelling can turn a movie into an Oscar award winner, storytelling plays a key role in business too. It’s called strategic communications.

This elective course unleashes the power of a business strategy by showing how to include communication planning from day one. As a leader, you’ll learn how to communicate effectively with employees and executives; how to use powerful words and images; as well as master communication on multiple platforms. Why? To make sure your story is heard.

Biography Adri Bruckner is a creative communications professional with experience in journalism as well as in PR. She holds a master's degree in international relations and economics from Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies.

Marybeth Sandell spent 18 years covering the financial markets for Bloomberg News in Stockholm, London, Zurich and New York.

She has worked with text, television, radio, web, data research and data visualization. She taught journalism at the University of North Carolina (Pembroke campus) and at a start-up educational institution in Barcelona.

She holds a master's degree in communication and technology from UNC-Chapel Hill.

Adri and Marybeth are co-authors of the bestselling “What’s Your Story” (Penguin Press 2021).

PERSONAL FINANCE Our oversubscribed elective in Cluster 2.

The Personal Finance & Wealth Management course takes a hands-on, practical approach to help participants become better managers of their own money and time, by making informed choices related to spending, saving, borrowing and investing.

It will introduce participants to the steps of the financial planning and decision-making process, and offer tools to help identify and evaluate choices as well as understand the long-term consequences of their decisions.

The course mirrors the steps of financial planning (offered by professional financial planners) which will ensure that participants leave the course with their own ready-to-implement financial plans.

Biography Joy Chan is a Visiting Professor at CEU Executive MBA. Joy holds a Master’s in Finance from University of Sydney, and a Bachelor of Business from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.

She has also held senior positions in the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore, Trade Development Board in Singapore, the Ministry of Trade and Industry in Singapore, and more recently at KPMG Central and Eastern Europe.

She is currently a visiting professor at many European universities and works as executive education trainer for corporations, and offers wealth advisory services for individuals.

Her passion project is to help working executives grow their wealth passively and consistently through timetested, research-based strategies.

CREATING HIGH-PERFORMING TEAMS Our oversubscribed elective in Cluster 3.

Many people are promoted to team leadership positions because they are successful professionals and individual contributors, yet few team leaders take time to learn research-based best practices for creating high-performing teams.

Consequently, their teams never reach their full potential. This engaging and interactive course will help you learn how to lead your teams toward sustainable high performance in both stable and challenging times, regardless of whether you work in the business, non-profit, or entrepreneurial sectors.

Through self-assessments, activities, and real-life cases of best and worst team leadership practices, you will be able to immediately apply: §

Biography Paula J. Caproni is a faculty member in the Management and Organizations Department at the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan.

Professor Caproni received her MBA from the University of Massachusetts and her Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior from Yale University.

In addition to teaching about leadership skills, effective coaching, developing power and influence, and creating high performing teams in the University of Michigan MBA and Executive Programs, Professor Caproni served as the Academic Director of the Full-Time and Part-Time MBA Programs.

STRATEGIC NEGOTIATIONS Our oversubscribed elective in Cluster 4.

We are negotiating all the time; in fact, the most important decisions we have made in our lives are likely the outcome of a negotiation.

Yet 80% of people consistently leave value on the negotiation table, and the worst part is that they are not even aware of it. This happens because negotiations are often viewed as tactical zero-sum power and persuasion exercises.

A negotiation at its core is no more than a problem that requires a shared solution by the cooperation between two or more parties. To realize the maximum potential in negotiations, a change in the paradigm is required; negotiations should be approached with a problem-solving mindset. This course will explore an integrated approach to engage in complex negotiations. We will discuss why to maximize value in negotiations you must go well beyond the simple tactical interaction.

Negotiations are really three-dimensional (3D) problems and to be an effective negotiator you must understand this architecture. Finally, when it comes to negotiations, the HOW (communication) is just as important as the WHAT (strategy), in this course you will also learn how to integrate effective communication in negotiations.

Biography Roberto Ordonez is an expert negotiator, he advises large corporations, governments, SMEs, and family businesses with their complex negotiations. He is the Founder of Alkimya Catalyst, a boutique global consulting firm that specializes in designing and implementing complex negotiation and conflict resolution strategies.

Additionally, the firm conducts customized training programs to enhance the negotiation skills of its clients.

Prior to founding Alkimya Catalyst, Roberto worked over 20 years in the oil & gas industry holding senior management roles in operations, finance, business development, corporate planning, corporate strategy, and procurement divisions for large oil & gas companies including Occidental Petroleum, Hess Corporation, and BP. Before starting Alkimya Catalyst, Roberto was Regional Director of Operations Effectiveness for Occidental Petroleum's Middle Eastern assets, where he led change management initiatives and used innovation to transform the way oil field operations are conducted in the Gulf region. He was also CFO of Occidental of Oman and Chairman of OXY Oman’s contracts committee where he oversaw the design of procurement strategies for purchases over $2 Bn USD a year.
