Dear Member,
I hope this letter finds you well and that you are enjoying the beautiful fall weather.
This month finds your public television stations busy with events and local productions.
But first, I want to thank everyone who participated in our Action Auction last month – donors, sponsors, volunteers and bidders – and all who helped to make it a successful fundraising event.
Our development team is preparing to welcome PBS personalities Julia Collin Davison and Bridget Lancaster, hosts of America’s Test Kitchen, next month when they return to Dayton and Cincinnati. More information about the events can be found in the station news section of this magazine.
Our production team completed work on the second monthly broadcast episode of Brick by Brick: Solutions for a Thriving Community, which airs this month, and they continue to produce bi-monthly podcasts of the community affairs program.
This month, PBS programming features “The American Vice President” from American Experience which examines the years 1963 to 1976 when America was forced to confront the purpose of the

vice president and the succession process through the evolution of the 25th Amendment. NOVA premieres a five-part series called “The Solar System” which explores the forces that create the truly awesome and extreme conditions found on our neighboring planets and moons. The documentary VOCES: Latino Vote 2024 examines election-related issues that matter most to the politically diverse Latino community in battleground states. “The Civil War’s Lost Massacre” from Secrets of the Dead features historians, descendants and archaeologists as they search for information about the shocking deaths of a group of more than 20 African American Civil War soldiers.
Local programming features the premiere of our Bing Davis documentary, Willis ‘Bing’ Davis: Reach High and Reach Back and a new educational series from Cincinnatian and former CET collaborator, Chris Anderson called OutSCIder – which teaches science and environmental stewardship through our National Parks.
From events with PBS personalities to local productions and PBS programming – it’s all possible because of members like you. Thank you for supporting CET and ThinkTV.

Production is wrapping up on our newest film – Willis “Bing” Davis: Reach High, Reach Back – and the premiere has been set for Thursday, October 10, at 8pm. The documentary will simulcast on ThinkTV16 in Dayton, CET in Cincinnati and the station livestreams on the PBS App. It will also air the following Sunday, October 13, at 4:30pm as part of the “Your Neighborhood Productions” on ThinkTV16 and CET and be available to stream On Demand online.
“The reflective journey of working with the ThinkTV staff and crew has been one of joy and appreciation. Looking back has not only confirmed the rightness of my youthful decision to make art and helping others be a major part of my life, but it also helped me to reflect back in full appreciation for the many people who have helped me every step of the way,” Davis said.
Davis’ artwork is known for its incorporation of African and African American themes as well as its focus on social justice issues. He works in a variety of media, including painting, sculpture, ceramics, clay and found object art. His art often explores the intersection of race, identity and history while demonstrating the power of community and collective action. The documentary celebrates Davis’ contributions to both the arts and the community while promoting a strong appreciation for African American culture and history.
The film is being produced by Emmy Awardwinning producer Ann Rotolante along with educator, artist and associate producer Rodney Veal. Learn more and watch a preview at ThinkTV.org/bingdavis-reach-highreach-back/.
Susan has been a member of the station since 2020. When asked why she donates, her response was, “How could anyone not donate? The education that the public gets for free... is astounding! She doesn’t own a car to travel around, so she sees the world through PBS programming.
Susan watches PBS every day, and she’s found it to be a very nurturing aspect in her life. A special story near and dear to her was the documentary Judi Dench: My Passion for Trees. She was at home recuperating, and watching the documentary completely changed her day for the better. Every time she sees large trees, she thinks of Judi Dench and her story.
Susan loves PBS for the variety of programming. She enjoys Downton Abbey, Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Magpie Murders, Grantchester and pretty much any other British murder mystery. Susan has also been inspired by Rick Steves. She says she likes him because he’s not judgmental and he has an awesome sense of humor.
Susan lives in Dayton, OH and loves to read. She says she has more bookshelves than regular furniture, and she’s totally happy being surrounded by them. But when she turns on the television, she goes to PBS and is totally happy!
CET is deep in edit on a new show produced in partnership with Rick Steves and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra – Rick Steves’ Europe: A Symphonic Journey. The program was recorded over three days at the Pops Concert last month. A premiere date has not been set, but the film will be made available to PBS stations across the country.
The show will take audiences on a visual and musical tour across Europe with music by composers Edvard Grieg, Camille Saint-Saëns, Bedř ich Smetana, Johann Strauss Jr., Giuseppe Verdi and others. Steves will host the program and share personal stories of his extensive travels across the continent as well as insights into European history.
“It’s long been my dream to weave music, travel and history together to tell the story of how Romantic Age music served as a bugle call on the battlefield as the nations of 19th century Europe were winning their freedom, to do it with a great American orchestra, and to have it filmed to share with our entire country on public television,” said Steves. “And, with the help of the Cincinnati Pops and maestro John Morris Russell and CET, I’ll be doing exactly that.”
We’ll share more information as it becomes available!

OutSCIder, a video series that teaches science and environmental stewardship through our National Parks, is coming to your local PBS stations! Local producer and host Chris Anderson hits the trail to learn about the world around us and meets some awesome scientists along the way. If Anderson’s name sounds familiar, it’s because he also hosted and produced Science Around Cincy, which we aired previously.
Our regional community affairs program, Brick by Brick: Solutions for a Thriving Community, continues to explore the housing crisis in our area. The second monthly TV episode premieres this month on Thursday, October 17, at 9pm on CET and ThinkTV16.
OutSCIder is also part of OutSCIder Classroom, a web collection that includes instructional materials for educators and caregivers, professional development for teachers, outreach materials and more. Anderson has been working on OutSCIder Classroom in partnership with the Hamilton County Educational Services Center.
We’re excited to be airing OutSCIder on all three of our main channels: Sundays, starting October 6, at 11:30am on CET Sundays, staring October 6, at 10:30am on ThinkTV16 Saturdays, starting October 12, at 7:30am on ThinkTV14

In this episode, our Brick by Brick journalists explore one of the original solutions for housing housing stability - choice vouchers. Join the team as they revisit this evolving program, once known as Section-8, to see what’s working, what’s not and what our region can learn from it as we continue to respond to the affordable housing crisis.
As a multi-platform series, the broadcast component is just one of the ways that Brick by Brick shares their content. The team continues to release new podcast episodes, blog posts and videos on the website at CETconnect.org/brick-bybrick.
