Dear Member,

Welcome to May! The school year may be winding down, but CET and ThinkTV continue to provide educational content for students, parents and educators; Ohio Learns 360 has added multiple new family webinars, including one centered on Childhood Anxiety and Depression and another called Building and Maintaining Healthy Relationships with Peers. You can find the new webinars and a lot of wonderful educational content on our websites.

Our education staff members aren’t the only ones who’ve been busy - our development team created a wonderful CET is ME event at Longworth Hall last month that recognized local educators. The theme of the night was “Be a PBS KID Again” and more than 200 attendees enjoyed games, food and live music. Thank you to everyone who attended the event and to our volunteers who helped make the evening a success.

This month we kick off the CET/ThinkTV Summer Action Auction. This regional, online-only event will run May 3 – May 7 and will include items and experiences associated with outdoor as well as summer and early fall activities.

Our production teams have been hard at work creating new content for our digital programs; new episodes of Hobby Hunting, The Baking Journal and Parent Hacks are available now on our websites. Our podcasts, Rodney Veal’s Inspired By and For the Love of EdTech will be winding down their seasons in mid-May, but we’ll be working on a couple of summer specials, so stay tuned.

Local programming features new episodes of The Art Show and the premiere of our latest documentary, The

City that Sings: Cincinnati’s May Festival. You can learn more about those in the station news section of this magazine.

PBS national programming has some great offerings too this month. Follow the attempts of scientists to save the North Atlantic’s most critically endangered mammal in NOVA’s “Saving the Right Whale.” The threepart series, Wild Scandinavia, explores the beautiful coasts, magical forests and the volcanic and arctic extremes of northern Europe. American Masters showcases one of the most influential artists of the 20th century in Nam June Paik: Moon is the Oldest TV. And don’t miss the National Memorial Day Concert, PBS’ annual concert that honors our country’s veterans, men and women in uniform and military families.

From educational content, to events, to digital series, podcasts and programming – it’s all available to the communities we serve because of your continued support.

Many Thanks!

Adopt a Class Students Visit CET

Ten of our staff members have been volunteering in two classrooms at Hays-Porter School in Cincinnati since the fall. This program, run through Adopt a Class, partners underserved youth with representatives of companies and nonprofits throughout our community. Our staff members talk about the work they do at Public Media Connect and how STEAM applies to our work as a local PBS station while leading activities and helping children feel safe and connected right here in their own community. On Friday, March 24, our two adopted classrooms took a field trip to see our CET Studios!

Second Season of Engineering Your Future: Middle School Edition Underway

Flight-Centered Curriculum Continues to Soar

Middle school student Riley Davis is on a mission to talk to as many engineers as possible to find outwhat’s so special about engineering? Engineers from the Dayton/Cincinnati region talk about their pathways to engineering, including who influenced them along the way, and how they overcame any obstacles they encountered. The conversations with engineers bust a few myths (you don’t need to be a genius at math) and take on a few stereotypes (you can be interested in cosmetics and engineering.) Now in production for its second season, the video collection is designed to inspire girls and students of color to explore engineering and other in-demand STEM careers. The collection is available on YouTube and on PBS LearningMedia –just search Engineering Your Future

Public Media Connect’s award-winning series The Art Show returns with three new episodes this month. Take a walk in Dublin to create found object art using Patterns in Nature, visit the Temple-Tifereth Israel in Cleveland for Andy Warhol’s Jewish Icons portrait series, and stop into Red Diamond Mandolins in Athens where luthier and Oh io Heritage Fellow, Don MacRostie, puts his heart and soul into each handcrafted instrument. We’ll also meet West African dancer Quianna Simpson in Columbus, find out what goes into the design of each Ohio brewery poster for the annual Prints & Pints event, learn about the Latinx artists in Northeast Ohio behind the ‘Doors to My Barrio’ project, and take in the ‘Like a Good Armchair’ exhibit that showcases items from the permanent collection of Oberlin College. You’ll see these stories and more from our region and beyond. Tune in Saturdays at 6pm on CET, Sundays at 5:30pm on ThinkTV16, Sundays at 8pm on CET Arts or anytime on the PBS App or YouTube.

Problem Solving with Wilbur and Orville, our curriculum project created in partnership with the National Aviation Hall of Fame, continues to take flight in elementary school classrooms throughout the state of Ohio. The program, which includes five days of curriculum, features videos, engagement opportunities and lessons, is getting great feedback from teachers and students. Some local classes are even including field trips to the National Aviation Hall of Fame! We are excited to continue to grow this partnership and share more updates in the future.

Move to Include Initiative and Event at ThinkTV

Public Media Connect is pleased to be part of Move to Include, the national initiative that uses the power of public media to promote inclusion. In March, in honor of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, we hosted an in-person and online screening and discussion around the WXXI film, A Good Life, for more than 150 guests, created special online programming blocks for Move to Include content, and continued our ongoing social media effort to raise awareness by sharing important and empowering stories. Thank you to the Charles D. Berry Foundation for their support of these efforts.

CET Satellite Dish Repositioned

On a sunny but cold March day, the CET Engineers and a technician from USSI GLOBAL climbed to the rooftop at 1223 Central Parkway to reposition our satellite dish. The task at hand was critical, given the imminent move of PBS from AMC21 to Galaxy16. The switch to Galaxy16 is necessary because AMC21 is nearing the end of its operational lifespan and will be decommissioned on May 31. Satellites have a limited lifespan, typically ranging from 10 to 15 years, after which they may experience malfunctions or complete failure due to wear and tear, aging equipment, running out of fuel or radiation damage. AMC21 was launched in 2008, making it 15 years old, and its operational performance is declining. The repositioning process was not without its challenges. Our dish had not been moved for several years, and there was a concern that it might be stuck and difficult to adjust. However, with the expertise of the technicians, the dish was carefully tilted up and pointed more toward the east, aligning it with the new satellite. The repositioning of our satellite dish was a critical step in ensuring that our viewers can continue to enjoy their favorite programming without interruption.
