Welcome

Dear Member,

Welcome to summer! For CET and ThinkTV, summer marks the end of our fiscal year (June 30th) and, on behalf of our Board of Trustees and our staff, I want to thank all our Members, volunteers, businesses and foundations who support us throughout the year. Your support allows us to provide programming, educational resources and online services to the people of southwest Ohio.

Our development team is putting the final touches on our next event, CET is Me, which will be June 13th at Mad Tree Brewing in Cincinnati. Check out the Station News section of this magazine or CETconnect.org for more information.

In the education department, our team continues to work on Reading is Lit, a literacy program that provides teacher-designed literacy boxes for young students to practice the “science of reading” literacy skills with their families.

The work also continues on our new community affairs program, Brick by Brick: Solutions for a Thriving Community. Our production team uploads new podcast episodes every other week and the broadcast element of the series is set to debut this fall.

Speaking of programming, we have some wonderful PBS programs to enjoy this month. Mysteries are well represented with the return of three popular series; Professor T (UK) returns for Season 3 with Professor Jasper Tempest in prison and facing a momentous decision; Season 9 of Grantchester opens in 1961, with police detective Geordie Keating and the resident vicar working to solve new cases in the Cambridgeshire

village; and D.I. Ray returns for its second season with DI Rachita Ray returning to the homicide squad after her suspension.

The Great American Recipe is also back for Season 3 with new cooks, new judges and a new location. Disco: Soundtrack of a Revolution is a three-part series that examines the rise, fall and musical legacy of disco. Dynamic Planet travels to all seven continents and features the people and animals working and living on the front line of climate change.

Community events, educational resources, local productions and national PBS programming – all of it is possible and available to the communities we serve because of you. Thank you for supporting CET and ThinkTV.

Brick by Brick Investigates Zoning-Focused Solutions

CET and ThinkTV have officially launched the new multi-platform community affairs project, Brick by Brick: Solutions for a Thriving Community, with the first season focusing on the region’s housing crisis. Most recently, the team has been investigating the zoning reform movement in Cincinnati and other cities nationwide. In April, the podcast explored the “middle housing” component of the plan, comparing cities like Minneapolis, MN; Tulsa, OK and Buffalo, NY to explore lessons for Cincinnati’s effort. The Brick by Brick team will revisit this solution in June, ahead of the city’s planned vote on its Connected Communities measures, and dive deeper into the potential impact of another key part of the plan: minimum parking mandates.

For more about Brick by Brick and to read, listen and watch the stories, visit CETconnect.org/brick-by-brick or thinktv.org/brick-by-brick. The podcast component of the project is also available to stream wherever you get your podcasts.

Celebrate the Arts at CET is Me

CET is Me returns this summer for a celebration of the arts. The 2024 theme, “Unleash Your Inner Artist,” invites guests to explore their own creative sides with an evening of activities, food and fun as CET recognizes four community heroes in the arts. Join us on June 13 at MadTree Brewing to unleash your inner artist. Visit CETconnect.org/cet-is-me to purchase your tickets and learn more about the event.

Community Event Celebrates GOSPEL

CET recently hosted a community engagement event around GOSPEL, the latest series from Henry Louis Gates, Jr. GOSPEL explores the rich history of Black spirituality through sermon and song, so the education and engagement team connected with the region’s leading gospel industry executive, Tracey Artis of I Hear Music, Inc. to plan the event.

Hosted at Word of Deliverance Ministries for the World, Inc., the event was open to the public and livestreamed by the church. Attendees were given a brief overview of gospel music and its impact, along with a narrative about the evolution of gospel music. The event featured clips from GOSPEL along with live performances from some of Cincinnati’s finest artists, including an organist, a soloist, a duet, a rap artist and two choirs. These stellar performances helped to inspire engagement and create the feeling of a music awards show for attendees. This event was made possible by funding from WETA, the PBS station that serves the greater DC area. GOSPEL is available for streaming with Passport on the PBS App.

Reading is Lit!

ThinkTV has partnered with Learn to Earn Dayton to launch a family literacy program, providing kits to students in kindergarten through third grade to improve early literacy skills. Designed by teachers to help practice reading at home, participating families receive a box with a reading book, fun hands-on materials and links to videos and howto’s – all featuring the best practices from the Science of Reading.

The first boxes were distributed to families of Trotwood Early Learning Center last fall and a second set of lit boxes was distributed this spring at both Trotwood and Fairview Elementary. Feedback from families indicates children are spending hours using the Reading is Lit kits at home. Reading is Lit is expected to grow to include even more K-3 families in 2024!

Adopt-a-Class Field Trip to CET

Part of CET’s involvement in our Adopt-a-Class partnership with Hays-Porter School includes inviting our kindergarten and first grade classes to the building for a behind-the-scenes look at what we do. On the most recent field trip, students learned about our financial literacy program, $martPath, and what it takes to produce a show. They also explored green screen technology, puppeteering and ventriloquism, and got creative with finger puppets and coloring. The half-day visit ended with lunch and students received goody bags with a book and CET/PBS swag.

Family Activities with Work it Out Wombats

CET was recently awarded funding to test out Work it Out Wombats family engagement materials created by GBH, Boston PBS. So far, we’ve been able to share pop-up, hands-on activity stations at four different family events. We spent the spring recruiting families for feedback on take-home activity backpacks, which allowed them to use these materials at home.

CET and ThinkTV are grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Berghamer and the Foundation Office at Fifth Third Bank for the dedicated support of the monthly PMC Connect Member Magazine

Mr. and Mrs. Berghamer were loyal CET supporters since 1987. After her husband’s passing in 2000, Mrs. Ellen Berghamer continued to generously support her favorite nonprofits including public television. She was an avid PBS NewsHour viewer and trusted Gwen Ifill and Judy Woodruff as her news source.

She was employed by Procter and Gamble Corp. as a secretary and a receptionist. Later in life, she lived at the Marjorie P. Lee Retirement Community. Mrs. Berghamer passed in 2016 but her love of public television continues thanks to the Ellen and Richard Berghamer Foundation and our friends at the Foundation Office at Fifth Third Bank.
