Welcome

Dear Member,
Welcome to December and the official start of winter! I hope you are finding time during the busy holiday season to relax and enjoy all your public television stations have to offer – on-air and online.
If you’re still looking for gift ideas this holiday season, Passport - our streaming video service – is a wonderful benefit that is available with a yearly membership to ThinkTV or CET. Passport offers access to more than 1,500 episodes of your favorite PBS shows. December is also an excellent time to consider those year-end, tax-deductible donations. More information is available at thinktv.org/ support and cetconnect.org/support.
I want to thank everyone who attended our America’s Test Kitchen events last month in Cincinnati and Dayton. Attendees enjoyed behind-the-scenes stories, cooking techniques, and menu inspiration with PBS personalities Julia Collin Davison and Bridget Lancaster.
On the local production side, you can catch our latest documentary Willis ‘Bing’ Davis: Reach High and Reach Back on the PBS App, YouTube and our websites. Our education team created teaching resources centered on the documentary and they are now available on PBS
LearningMedia. Our digital series, The Baking Journal, finds our host Stephanie baking up holiday gifts; catch a new episode every Monday this month on our YouTube channel @thebakingjournal.
What holiday season would be complete without holiday programming? This month Mary Berry’s Highland Christmas finds Mary spending Christmas in her mother’s homeland of Scotland. Debbie Gibson Holiday: A Soundcheck Special features Debbie Gibson with a special guest appearance by Joey McIntyre. Anthony Williams’ Urban Nutcracker celebrates multicultural communities and puts a modern spin on the 19th-century fairy tale. Rick Steves’ European Christmas finds Rick celebrating Christmas in England, France, Norway, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Italy. Karamu: Feast for the 7th Day explores the tradition of Kwanzaa, focusing on the final feast that concludes the annual tradition. On Christmas Day, the midwives of Nonnatus House are delivering more babies and drama in a Call the Midwife Holiday Special
From events to local productions to PBS programming – it’s all possible because of you. Thank you for supporting ThinkTV and CET.

Have a wonderful holiday season!

Uncover the community role of craft appreciators in a new episode of Craft in America, featuring three artists and collectors from Cincinnati. Sara Vance Waddell, Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi and Cynthia Lockhart, among others, reveal what drives collectors and how their support furthers artists at all stages of their careers.
Waddell has built a significant collection of artworks by women, people of color and artists in the LGBTQ community, including the quilts of Dr. Mazloomi and Lockhart, who are known for their incorporation of African and African American culture into their art. Tune in on Sunday, December 27, at 10pm on CET and Saturday, December 28, at 10pm on ThinkTV16 and CET Arts to see these Cincinnati artists and learn more about their work.

Willis “Bing” Davis

Teaching Resources & Call for Feedback
We premiered our one-hour documentary, Willis “Bing” Davis: Reach High & Reach Back, in October. Since then, we’ve had some amazing feedback from the community about both the film and the impact Bing has made on our community. As we continue to focus many of our efforts on both the rich history of Southwest Ohio and the arts here in our region, we would love your feedback on Willis “Bing” Davis: Reach High & Reach Back. Your thoughts about the work we’re doing, our role in the arts and what we should look toward next really matters. If you’ve watched the film, please consider scanning our QR code to the right and taking our very short impact survey. Your feedback helps shape the work we do.

Also, alongside the release of the film, which is now available to stream on the PBS App and YouTube, our education team has created some awesome resources to supplement the documentary. These educational resources build on the themes of the full film, offering insight into the materials, mindset and inspirations of the artist. Accompanying each video are educational support materials for teachers and students, including hands-on activities, to connect students with the art and insights of Bing Davis. You can find the videos by visiting thinktv. pbslearningmedia.org/ and searching for “Bing Davis” in the search bar. Thank you to everyone who made this documentary and these educational resources possible.
Make Your 2024 Year-End Charitable Donation
December is a great time to make a year-end gift to support public media. If you’re at least 70 ½, you can make a tax-free Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) gift directly from your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) to CET or ThinkTV
Your QCD is not included in your Adjusted Gross Income and therefore is not taxed. The QCD is counted toward your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD). You may satisfy all or part of the required minimum distribution with QCDs, but without having to pay federal income tax on that portion of the distributions. This is particularly advantageous if you do not have a financial need for your full RMD. Please contact us to learn how it’s a win for you and a win for public television.
Make a Gift of Stock this Year
Do you own stock that has increased in value? Have you owned this stock for more than a year? If you answered “yes” to both questions, we have good news for you!
You can increase your impact by donating appreciated stock to CET or ThinkTV. Many station supporters find that giving stock helps them do more than what’s possible when giving cash. By joining these thoughtful investors, you too can yield high returns for early childhood education, and arts and culture across our region.
You can enjoy a double tax benefit when you donate appreciated stock. You may claim a generous tax deduction for what the stock is worth today as opposed to what it cost you many years ago. You will also avoid paying capital gains tax on the transfer of the stock. This would not be the case should you decide to first sell the stock and then donate the proceeds.
We’re here to help! If you and your broker need more information about donating stock, bonds, mutual funds and other investments, please contact us.
Board
of Trustees Challenge Grant Opportunity
We are fortunate that 100 percent of our Board of Trustees have donated again this year for the 14th Annual Board Challenge Grant. If you donate to CET or ThinkTV before December 31, 2024, your gift will be matched up to $60,285 so that our organization can continue to educate children, celebrate the arts and share stories that keep our communities engaged and informed. We thank you for your continued support and our Board of Trustee Members for their continued time, talent and treasure that makes a difference.
Community Education and Events
CET recently celebrated the rich history of Cincinnati’s West End and honored local legend and world heavyweight boxer Ezzard Charles by participating in the seventh annual Ezz Fest at Ezzard Charles Park. Members of our education and engagement teams shared local and national PBS resources and activities with individuals of all ages.
CET also hosted 44 high school juniors participating in Regional Youth Leadership (RYL), a community leadership program serving students from Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky schools. Teens spent the morning learning about careers and programs from ArtsWave, CET and Robert O’Neil Multicultural Arts Center (ROMAC), and spent the afternoon exploring murals and learning about the culture of food and sports in Cincinnati.

Chuck and Betty Ann Ellman

were happily married for fortyeight years. They spent many hours watching drama and arts programming on PBS. After Betty passed away, Chuck, a Procter & Gamble retiree, continued to dedicate his talent to many nonprofits to the day he passed away. Chuck and Betty Ann lived humble lives. They included public television in their trust to make sure future generations of viewers would continue to enjoy educational and entertaining programming.
