Welcome

Dear Member,

Summer is winding down and, as schools gear up for a new year of learning, CET and ThinkTV continue to work on Ohio Learns 360 (OL360); a statewide project that provides educational tools to parents, caregivers, after-school providers and teachers for students.

Our education team was also out and about in our communities this summer – participating in OL360 events at Ezzard Charles Park in Cincinnati and taking part in the PBS KIDS Series at the Neon Movies in Dayton.

Our production, education and communications departments have been busy creating new episodes of SHOWCASE with Barbara Kellar as well as new episodes of our podcasts Rodney Veal’s Inspired By and For the Love of EdTech. Look for these new episodes starting next month.

The efforts of our production team were recognized earlier this summer when ThinkTV and CET received seven regional Emmy nominations for our work in 2022. The regional Emmy awards gala was held July 29th (after this edition of Connect went to press).

Music is well-represented on the programming schedule this month; Johnny Cash: Man in Black – Live in Denmark 1971 features the country music artist backed by his band the Tennessee Trio and singing duets with June Carter Cash. Sting: Live at the Olympia contains a mix of newer songs along with classics from the artist’s Police days Shakira: Live from Paris feature the highest-selling Columbian recording artist of all time performing her biggest hits. And Great Performances debuts “Leonard

PBS programming on the non-musical side includes Once Upon a Time in Northern Ireland, which contains the personal stories of family members who were drawn – both willingly and unwillingly –into the conflict that spanned more than 30 years. Princess Diana: Who Do You Think She Was? is the story of the Spencer family; we all know how the story ends, but this fourpart series explores who Diana was before the palace and the paparazzi. And Berlin Wall Countdown to 1961 –1989 is a two-part history of the wall going up and coming down.

From educational projects to local programing, podcasts and PBS national programming – it’s all possible and available to your communities because of your support. Thank you.

2023 Action Auction

The Action Auction is returning in September! Bidding will open for all items at noon on Sunday, September 10. There will be no on-air component to the auction this year, but there will be great deals available!

Bidding

Just like last year, all bidding will be handled online using the GiveSmart platform and you will be able to bid on a smartphone, tablet or computer. Unlike the past three years, there will not be items that close every night of the auction. There will be three separate closing times: Tuesday, September 12, at noon, Friday, September 15, at noon and Sunday, September 17 at 9pm.

To find when items will close, choose ‘View Items’ on CET’s GiveSmart homepage: https://ActionAuction. givesmart.com – see image below.

If you would like the option to pay by check when picking up your items at CET, you will still need to have a credit or debit card on file to bid. If you receive a notification that you are a winning bidder and would like to pay by check, you will need to contact the Auction Office (513-345-6552) within two hours of the closing time to request that your registered card not be charged.

We will have major gifts again this year. The bidding is the same for those items as it is for general merchandise.

Questions

Near the top of the page, select ‘Categories’ – see image below.

For questions or concerns with registration, bidding or any other topic, please contact us via email at actionauction@cetconnect.org or call 513-345-6552 Monday through Friday between the hours of 9am and 5pm.

Item Pick-Up

That will open the list of the categories for all of the items being offered, during the auction. Select ‘Sept 12,’ ‘Sept 15,’ or ‘Sept 17’ to determine when a particular item will close – see example below.

All items that are gift certificates will be sent to the address that you enter during the registration process in GiveSmart. Items that are not certificates will need to be picked up at CET or ThinkTV - shipping of items is NOT available. You will need to schedule an appointment, using SignUpGenius, for your pick-up time. There will be four pick-up appointments available at CET every 15 minutes, beginning Wednesday, September 20, at 10am. There will also be pick-up appointments available at CET on Saturday, September 23, from 10am to 3pm. There will be the option to schedule pick- up appointments during regular business hours at ThinkTV offices beginning Tuesday, September 26.

Another way to determine when an item will close is by the item number. Items numbered 100-999 will close Tuesday, September 12, at noon; items numbered 1000 –1999 will close Friday, September 15, at noon and items numbered 2000 and up will close Sunday, September 17, at 9pm.

Before placing your first bid, you will need to register on the GiveSmart system. You can register before the auction starts or when you are ready to place your first bid. You will need a debit or credit card to register. Please check your information to be certain that we have your correct address, phone number and email address.

We will NOT be able to accept cash or process credit card payments during a pick-up appointment.

In order to secure a time that is most convenient for you, please schedule your pick-up time at CET or ThinkTV as soon as possible. The Signup Genius links will be available on our websites.

Thank you for your continued support. As usual, Bid High and Bid Often!

As you enjoy these summer delights, make sure to keep an eye out for the upcoming fall recipes, set to be released in September.

ThinkTV at the Freedom School

ThinkTV provided six weeks of STEM and literacy enrichment for more than 30 young scholars in grades K-4 at Camp H.O.P.E. Freedom School at Fairview Elementary. This year’s programs got the kids into some fun hands-on learning: Engineering Design, Air and Flight, Wild for Ohio nature camp, and winter survival! Two of ThinkTV’s University of Dayton summer interns worked alongside the Omega CDC staff and, in the process, gained valuable hands-on teaching experiences they can carry into their future careers.

PMC to Produce Documentary about Daytonian Artist Willis “Bing” Davis

We are pleased to announce that we are producing a documentary on Willis “Bing” Davis, an African American artist, educator and community activist from Dayton, Ohio. The documentary will celebrate Davis’ contributions to both the arts and the community while promoting a strong appreciation for African American culture and history.

Davis’ artwork is known for its incorporation of African and African American themes as well as its focus on social justice issues. He works in a variety of media, including painting, sculpture, ceramics, clay and found object art.

In addition to his artistic pursuits, Davis is a dedicated community activist and educator. He founded the EbonNia Gallery in Dayton, Ohio, which showcases the work of many types of artists and serves as a community gathering place. The full documentary is expected to premiere on-air and online in May of 2024.

Ohio Learns 360 Update - Summer 2023 is a Wrap!

Our Ohio Learns 360 team had a busy summer as they wrapped up the first year of this two-year project.

• Our hands-on Camp-in-a-Box curriculum provided training to teachers throughout our communities.

• The Afterschool 360 program brought books, clips and activities live into Ohio’s summer and after school classrooms.

• Our two summer Virtual Field Trips took families and classrooms on a guided nature hike with the team at Five Rivers MetroParks and a tour through Cincinnati’s Museum Center.

• Nine Family Webinars were streamed, with more monthly webinars in the works.

• We participated in community events all summer long to meet with families and raise awareness of learning opportunities around Ohio Learns 360. Coming in September, Wild for Ohio nature event with the Dayton Metro Library and Curious Critters author, David Fitzsimmons.

Visit OhioLearns360.org to keep up-to-date with all the ways we’re making learning fun for teachers, kids and families in the coming year. Ohio Learns 360 project is a statewide collaboration with the Ohio Department of Education to accelerate learning for Ohio’s kids enrolled in summer and after school programs.
