Dear Member,

It’s April and I’m feeling thankful. Thankful for all the Members who joined or renewed their membership support during our March Membership Campaign. Thankful, too, for all of our Sustaining Members who committed to monthly ongoing gifts during our Sustainer Drive. It’s your support that makes everything we do possible.

This month, our Education department continues training staff of after-school and summer programs who use our Camp-in-a-Box kits. The kits are part of the Ohio Learns 360 statewide-initiative that provides PBS resources to help kids in grades K-5 learn, even when they’re not in school. Each Camp-in-a-Box kit includes an easy-to-follow teacher’s guide, links to PBS videos and bonus activities to extend the learning. Ohio Department of Educationapproved training, which includes an overview of the learning goals, activities and materials, as well as an opportunity to try out some of the hands-on challenges, is required to receive a kit.

Our production department is busy putting the finishing touches on our latest documentary, The City that Sings: Cincinnati’s May Festival. Look for the premier of the 30-minute program next month in time to celebrate the May Festival’s 150th anniversary.

April programming on ThinkTV and CET has much to offer. Local programming features the premiere of Carnival of the Animals: Remix, recorded live at the Cincinnati School for the Creative and Performing Arts. PBS national programming finds new episodes of Antiques Roadshow visiting Idaho and Virginia Beach.

April Highlights

La Frontera with Pati Jinich Season 2

Mondays, April 3, 10 and 17, at 9pm on CET and ThinkTV16

In Season 2, Pati explores the western part the US-Mexico border from Southern California to Baja, Arizona to Sonora, and New Mexico to Chihuahua to experience each region’s rich culture, people and cuisine, and demystify the borderland communities.

FRONTLINE: America and the Taliban

Tuesdays, April 4, 11 and 25, at 10pm on ThinkTV16 and CET

In this three-part documentary, FRONTLINE examines how America’s 20-year investment in Afghanistan culminated in Taliban victory. Drawing on decades of on-the-ground reporting, and interviews with Taliban and US officials, this film is the conclusion of an investigation of the missteps and consequences.

Nature “Niagara Falls”

Wednesday, April 19, at 8pm on CET and ThinkTV16

Monday, April 24, at 8pm on ThinkTV14

Niagara Falls is a geological wonder, one of the most famous waterfalls in the world and an epic sight for tourists who have been visiting the attraction for 200 years. The area around Niagara Falls is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians.

Iconic America: Our Symbols and Stories with David

Rubenstein

Wednesdays starting April 26 at 10pm on ThinkTV16 and CET

Mondays starting May 1 at 10pm on ThinkTV14

Explore American history through a close examination of iconic national symbols: indelible artifacts, places and archetypes. Rubenstein talks to historical thinkers, community members and subject matter experts to dive deeply into each symbol’s history and how its meaning has changed over time.

On the Cover: Tom Jones on Masterpiece

Sundays starting April 30 at 9pm on CET and ThinkTV16

This four-part television miniseries reimagines “The History of Tom Jones, A Foundling,” Henry Fielding’s classic novel. A picaresque story of the title character’s complicated journey to find real love, Tom Jones has delighted and scandalized readers since it was originally published in 1749.

Holocaust Remembrance Programming Airs on April 16 on CET

We are pleased to be able to present three films dedicated to Holocaust remembrance and history on Sunday, April 16, on CET and the CET livestream on the PBS App ahead of Remembrance Day on Tuesday, April 18.

Cabaret of Hope: Warsaw 1941 at 2pm

It’s 1941 in Warsaw, Poland, in a cordoned-off area known as the Warsaw Ghetto, where more than 400,000 Jews are held captive. Somehow, nightlife continues to thrive with cafés and restaurants offering entertainment and a temporary respite for residents. Perhaps the most famous was the Café Sztuka, where renowned poets, singers and musicians appeared regularly. The performances included both classical music and new songs by George Gershwin, Jerome Kern and Kurt Weill, among others. Some of the best-known musicians of the Ghetto included pianist Władysław Szpilman, the subject of the 2002 film The Pianist, soprano Maria Ajzensztadt, known as the “Nightingale of the Ghetto,”

Head Start Teachers go to Winter Camp

ThinkTV made winter extra special for early childhood educators from the Montgomery County Child Development Center with Winter Camp, a classroomready camp-in-abox for preschool classrooms.

Seventeen teachers participated in the 3-hour training session with hands-on teaching activities for reading, science, math and art, all featuring winter themes. Each teacher left with a Winter Camp-in-abox filled with all supplies needed to bring these fun winter activities into their classroom. Even though winter is over, you can still find Winter Camp video resources online at https://thinktv.org/camp/wintercamp/.

and cabaret singer Vera Gran. Presented by Cincinnati Opera in honor of the Jewish Cincinnati Bicentennial, Cabaret of Hope: Warsaw 1941 is a recreation of the cabaret experience in the Warsaw Ghetto. Featuring music and poetry from the era, the event is both a remembrance and a celebration of the creativity that flourished amid extraordinary oppression.

Yom HaShoah: Remembering for Tomorrow at 3pm

This CET production weaves the stories of Holocaust survivors together with music, candle lighting and moving prayers. This special, created in partnership with the Nancy & David Wolf Holocaust & Humanity Center, also gives our community the chance to shine a light on the value of promoting human rights, ethics and civic engagement.

Public Media Connect Producing May Festival

150th Anniversary Documentary

This May, Public Media Connect will produce and broadcast a special 30-minute documentary to celebrate the May Festival’s triumphant 150th anniversary. The City That Sings: Cincinnati’s May Festival will be part inspirational, part informative. The film, produced and directed by Emmy Award winner Richard Wonderling (Cincinnati Music Hall: The Next Movement), will focus on the engaging personalities and experiences of the people who comprise today’s chorus. Through a series of deeply moving and personal profiles, audiences will recognize that the traditions which built the May Festival are not isolated ideals plucked from a dusty past. Rather, they embody the love and respect for music excellence was then, and now the driver of the organization. Importantly, when it comes to the May Festival, the past truly is present.

Thank You to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Berghamer

CET and ThinkTV are grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Berghamer and the Foundation Office at Fifth Third Bank for the dedicated support of the monthly PMC Connect Member Magazine. Their support makes this print edition possible!

Mr. and Mrs. Berghamer were loyal CET supporters since 1987. After her husband’s passing in 2000, Mrs. Ellen Berghamer continued to generously support her favorite non-profits including public television. She was an avid PBS NewsHour viewer and trusted Gwen Ifill and Judy Woodruff as her news source.

Mrs. Berghamer was employed by Procter & Gamble as a secretary and a receptionist. Later in life, she lived at the Marjorie P. Lee Retirement Community. Mrs. Berghamer passed in 2016 but her love of public television continues thanks to the Ellen & Richard Berghamer Foundation and our friends at the Foundation Office at Fifth Third Bank.
