Page 1

Welcome

Dear Member,

With all the streaming platforms out there, you might wonder why public media still matters. Our mission goes far beyond the shows you know and love. We prepare children for success with our educational programming. We produce cultural content that celebrates our community. We bring you fair and balanced community affairs and news programming. And we keep people safe as the backbone of the Emergency Alert System and Wireless Emergency Alerts, ensuring reliable communication during crises and disasters.

And public media is for everyone. It’s free, accessible, and reflects our local community’s values and range of experiences. We’re proud to be part of your lives, and deeply grateful for your support in serving Southwest Ohio. Thank you.

Thank you as well to everyone who attended CET is ME last month at Longworth Hall. It was a wonderful evening honoring local educators and celebrating the PBS Kid in all of us. We also recently celebrated our youngest viewers with a Kids Club event at CET and “Be My Neighbor Day” at Northgate Mall in Cincinnati.

The CET Summer Action Auction returns this month, May 14 – 18, and you’ll be able to bid on certificates for events and activities to be used during the summer and early fall. Additional information is available in the Station News section of this magazine.

PBS national programming this month debuts “Miss Austen” on Masterpiece. This four-part series stars Keeley Dawes (The Durrells of Corfu) as Jane Austen. Nature’s “Hummingbirds of Hollywood” follows the transformative journey of a woman who nurtures wounded hummingbirds amid the glamour of

Hollywood. Bugs That Rule the World allows viewers to journey into the world of insects, the planet’s most populous but least appreciated creatures. “Mr. Polaroid,” from American Experience, centers on Edwin Land, the scientist and inventor of the Polaroid camera, who inspired the leaders of the 1990s tech boom, including Steve Jobs, who saw Land as both a guru and a godfather.

PBS also celebrates Memorial Day and honors our veterans, service men and women, and military families with the National Memorial Day Concert, live from Washington, D.C. on Sunday, May 25.

From events honoring our local educators to community engagement with our youngest viewers to PBS programming you know and trust – it’s all available to the communities we serve because of you. Thank you for supporting CET and ThinkTV.

Public Media Connect

Public Media Connect is the partnership of CET and ThinkTV. Our mission is to strengthen the communities we serve through programs and services that inspire and inform, educate and engage, fostering citizenship and culture, the joy of learning and the power of diverse perspectives.

Your support makes that mission possible; a mission that touches the lives of more than 3 million people every month. Thank you.

Station Events and Community Engagement this Spring

Our staff at CET and ThinkTV participated in some lively events with our community this spring. For the second year in a row, our staff visited the University of Cincinnati to work with UC College Mentors for Kids. We gave UC students and their young buddies an overview of public media and talked about the importance of each of our roles at the station. We taught them about career paths in the industry and created flipbooks to learn about the basics of animation.

Next, we hosted a Kids Club Event at CET celebrating the station’s 70th birthday. This family-friendly event included crafts with student volunteers from the University of Cincinnati, storytime with the Cincinnati Public Library, an animal encounter with the Cincinnati Zoo and PBS KIDS raffle prizes. Local organizations set up booths in the main studio with interactive experiences and fun swag. Attendees also got a chance to mingle with mascots like Rosie Red (Cincinnati Reds), Puckchop (Cincinnati Cyclones), Tempo (The Cincinnati Pops) and Y’all Star (Florence Y’alls) as well as PBS KIDS characters Clifford the Big Red Dog and Stu from Lyla in the Loop.

Then, we participated in “Be My Neighbor Day!” at Northgate Mall in Cincinnati. This free, family experience included hands-on activities, games, storytime and taught kids about being a community helper. PBS KIDS friends Daniel Tiger and Miss Elaina made appearances, too. Clifford the Big Red Dog also recently surprised students at two Rising Stars preschool locations who showed their appreciation with tons of hugs and a feverish name chant.

Events and appearances like these allow us at CET and ThinkTV to connect with our supporters and the people in our community who make everything that we do possible. Thank you!

Ohio Heritage Award Recipient Susan Abramovitz Featured on The Art Show

We are excited to feature Ohio Heritage Award Recipient Susan Abramovitz and her studio, Rock Riffle Run Pottery, in an upcoming segment on The Art Show. Susan moved to southeastern Ohio in the mid-1970s, after teaching ceramics at Case Western University. She opened her pottery studio in the beautiful Appalachian countryside of Shade, Ohio, an area that is home to many rich clay deposits. The clay she uses is locally harvested by Cedar Heights Clay Company, just 50 miles away from the studio.

The products at Rock Riffle Run Pottery range from a full line of functional stoneware that can be enjoyed daily to a collection of beautiful terracotta gardening accessories. Susan also hand throws all her pottery, making each piece truly one-of-a-kind. Her work has become a staple in the Shade community, across the state and beyond. If you’ve visited an Ohio State Park, it is very possible that you have seen one of her logo mugs in the gift shop!

While no creation is ever the same, Susan puts her heart into every piece. Tune in to The Art Show to explore more about Susan’s passion for pottery and the story behind her studio, Rock Riffle Run Pottery. Stay tuned for more information about the episode and check out other features from The Art Show on our website: ThinkTV.org/theartshow/.

Member Spotlight: Michele M. From Vandalia, Ohio

PBS has always been a significant part of Michele’s life and she became a proud member of ThinkTV in December 2024. She has always valued having the family-friendly viewing experience in her home, especially when her three children were younger. She knows that at any time, day or night, she can turn on PBS and find wholesome, entertaining and educational programming. Michele also enjoys the benefit of Passport, which gives her exclusive access to watch any of her favorite shows at any time on the PBS App.

Michele has been a practicing genealogist for over 40 years, and her favorite program on PBS is Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. He and his team inspire her with their genealogy knowledge and insight. Michele said it is fascinating to watch as they help others on their path to success in learning about their family history and ancestry.

Some of Michele’s other favorite PBS programs are Lidia’s Kitchen, America’s Test Kitchen, NOVA, Antiques Roadshow, This Old House and the Ken Burns Collection. For late-night viewing, she enjoys Painting with Bob Ross and she likes to end her night with the highly informative PBS News Hour. Michele says that she will always support and enjoy PBS, and hopes others will, too, so that we can continue to have engaging, educational and inspiring programs around for generations to come.
