American Experience: Ruthless – Monopoly’s Secret History CET • ThinkTV16 • ThinkTV14 www.CETconnect.org • www.thinktv.org PUBLIC MEDIA CONNECT February 2023 • MEMBER PROGRAM GUIDE

Dear Member,

February is here and we’re still deep into the winter temperatures. I hope you’re keeping warm and enjoying everything your local PBS stations have to offer on air and online. I for one am enjoying the continuation of the third seasons of All Creatures Great and Small and Miss Scarlet and the Duke as well as the return of Vienna Blood. There’s a lot to watch!

In addition to the powerhouse dramas from Masterpiece, I’m looking forward to the new Dogs in the Wild miniseries from Nature, which starts on February 8 and continues for three consecutive weeks; a new NOVA about the settlements in the ancient Amazon coming February 15; and the American Experience about Monopoly, which premieres on February 20. We’ll also kick off our March membership drive on February 25 with a new Celine Dion program, the return of shows featuring Tommy Emmanuel and Billy Joel, and a new film that explores the history and future of Black Broadway.

We have quite a few projects happening locally too, including the production of our weekly shows – The Art Show and SHOWCASE with Barbara Kellar – and the development of additional content for our digital projects including The Baking Journal, Hobby Hunting and Parent Hacks as well as our two podcasts, For the Love of EdTech and Rodney Veal’s Inspired By, which just launched in late December. We are excited to meet new guests, learn new recipes and explore new ways educational technology is being used in classrooms.

Looking to our partners in Cincinnati’s West End, we’re excited to continue our work with Adopt a Class this month. About a dozen of our staff members

They’re reading stories, doing activities, talking about the work we do at PMC and helping the children make connections between the things they are learning in elementary school and the careers of the future. Speaking of our work in education, I’d also encourage you to explore our Engineering your Future: Middle School Edition and Talking Jobs collections on YouTube.

In our next issue of this magazine, we’ll have information about our summer auction, a screening of Carnival of the Animals and release of complementary free educational resources, and more.

Spring is just around the corner and the work we do at CET and ThinkTV continues. All of this great work is possible because you choose to support your local public television stations.

Thank you.

February Highlights

Frontline: America and the Taliban Tuesdays, February 7 and 14, at 10pm on CET and ThinkTV16

See how America’s 20-year investment in Afghanistan culminated in Taliban victory. This investigation of the missteps and consequences draws on decades of on-the-ground reporting and interviews with Taliban and US officials.

Dogs in the Wild, A Nature Miniseries

Wednesdays, February 8, 15 & 22, at 8pm on ThinkTV16

and CET

This ambitious miniseries travels the globe with an eye toward revealing the secrets of the most successful carnivore on the planet: the canids.

NOVA: Ancient Builders of the Amazon

Wednesday, February 15, at 9pm on CET and ThinkTV16 Monday, February 20, at 9pm on ThinkTV14

Recent stunning discoveries are challenging the myth of the Amazon as a primeval wilderness, revealing traces of ancient civilizations that flourished there for centuries. Dense settlements indicate populations in the millions, supported by sophisticated agricultural systems, while huge geometric earthworks and roadways bear witness to complex religious ideas and social networks.

On the Cover: American Experience: Ruthless –Monopoly’s Secret History Monday, February 20, at 9pm on ThinkTV16 and CET

For generations, Monopoly has been America’s favorite board game, a love letter to unbridled capitalism and - for better or worse - the impulses that make our free-market society tick. But behind the myth of the game’s creation is an untold tale of theft, obsession and corporate double-dealing.

Celine Dion: Taking Chances World Tour Concert

Saturday, February 25, at 7:30pm on CET Saturday, February 25, at 9:30pm on ThinkTV16 Sunday, February 26, at 10pm on ThinkTV14

This concert performance was recorded in 2009 and originally released in 2010. The songs include “I Drove All Night,” “The Prayer” and “All By Myself.”

Connect Family Mourns the Loss of Dr. O’dell Owens

Cincinnati leader and long-time member of the CET and ThinkTV family, Dr. O’dell Owens, passed away unexpectedly on November 23. Although it has been a few months since his passing, we wanted to take a moment in this issue of the magazine to recognize the indelible impact Dr. Owens had on our community, our stations and our staff. From the countless hours he dedicated to helping make sure children in our community had access to PBS KIDS programming to the efforts he put into our events and fundraising initiatives, there is so much we could not have done without Dr. Owens. Thank you Dr. Owens. We’ll never forget you.

Changes to our Daytime Schedule

Starting February 6, PBS will no longer supply kids programming weekdays after 2pm. The decision has been years in the making. The good news is the PBS KIDS 24/7 Channel has been a huge success and both the channels in Cincinnati (14.3 and Spectrum 985) and Dayton (16.5 or Spectrum 982) have been among the most watched nationwide. The bad news is that kids have migrated to the PBS KIDS Channel from the weekday schedules on our broadcast channels.

So, effective February 6, Think 16.1 will join CET 48.1 in running a drama block weekdays from 2pm to 4pm and we’ll include primetime repeats and news programs later in the afternoon.

Understand that we will always place a high priority on kids programs. We will still be showing programs

like Sesame Street, Daniel Tiger, Curious George and Alma’s Way on ThinkTV16.1 and CET from 7am to 2pm and on ThinkTV14.1 from 2pm to 7pm. The weekend kids’ lineups will not change and, of course, the PBS KIDS channel will always be there, airing 24/7/365.

We have three new episodes of Show this month, including brand new local feature. Premiering on February 18 on CET and February 19 on ThinkTV16, this new story visits a family of giant trolls living at Aullwood Audubon in Dayton. Created by Thomas Dambo, “The Troll That Hatched an Egg” installation includes three trolls – Bo, Bodil and Bibbi and their troll-sized bird nest. This is one of only nine installations in the United States and Puerto Rico. Learn more online at CETconnect.org/theartshow or thinktv.org/theartshow.

launched back in late December. From dancer and choreographer Countess V. Winfrey to visual artist Amy Deal to filmmaker Jonathan McNeal, each episode is a downto-earth honest conversation with a real life working art maker, risk taker and world shaper. You can find Rodney Veal’s Inspired By on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and wherever you listen to podcasts. You can learn more at CETconnect.org/inspiredby or thinktv.org/inspiredby.

Bath Bombs: These easy-to-make bath bombs are a great way to show yourself some much-deserved love, especially with Valentine’s Day coming up.

Beginner Winter Painting: Grab the canvas and paint because this little birdie is sure to melt your winter woes!

Fondue for Two: You’re on your own for appetizers and entrees, but we know you’ll want to skip straight to dessert after checking this one out!

Acrylic Paint Pour: This new episode tackles the Instagram sensation of acrylic pour paintings. This one gets a little messy, but the results are surprisingly gorgeous!
