Dear Member,
It’s April and I’m feeling thankful. Thankful to all the Members who joined or renewed their membership support during our March Membership Campaign. It’s your support that makes everything we do possible.
As you may know, we also receive federal funding to operate our stations. Every public media station in every community is a little different, but here in Cincinnati and Dayton, federal funding accounts for about 16 percent of our annual budget. That may seem like a small amount, but that 16 percent allows us to secure grants, bring in sponsors, and build our membership with Viewers Like You. It’s seed money that makes our work possible, and it costs each American taxpayer less than $2 per year. We appreciate your support and we’re here if you have any questions about our funding or how that money is being spent.
Our development team is preparing for CET is ME at Longworth Hall; tickets are still available for this April 10 event, which will honor local educators. Next month, the online Summer Action Auction returns, and you’ll be able to bid on certificates for events and activities to be used during the summer and early fall.
Our local productions, including SHOWCASE with Barbara Kellar, The Art Show, and our digital series,
The Baking Journal, all have new episodes to enjoy this month. And be sure to check out new podcast episodes and online articles from our multimedia series, Brick by Brick: Solutions for a Thriving Community
This month, we premiere our special project with Rick Steves and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, Rick Steves’ Europe: A Symphonic Journey, which takes viewers on a spectacular musical journey through Europe.
PBS national programming features Austin City Limits Celebrates 50 Years, a two-hour special that offers salutes to icons including Willie Nelson and Steve Ray Vaughn and features behind-the-scenes interviews and archival clips. “We Want the Funk” from Independent Lens takes viewers through the history of funk music, from African, soul, and early jazz roots to its rise into the public consciousness. In the year marking the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the last concentration camp, Simon Schama: The Holocaust, 80 Years On follows renowned historian Sir Simon Schama as he confronts the history of the Holocaust as not just a Nazi obsession, but as a European-wide crime.
From events to local productions to PBS national programming – it’s all possible because of you. We’re proud to be part of your lives and deeply grateful for your support in serving Southwest Ohio.

For years, Rick Steves has taken viewers on unforgettable journeys through Europe, uncovering the history, culture and traditions that make each destination unique. Now, he invites you on a different kind of adventure — one that swaps guidebooks for sheet music and cobblestone streets for Cincinnati’s Music Hall. In Rick Steves’ Europe: A Symphonic Journey, co-produced by CET, Rick teams up with the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, led by conductor John Morris Russell, to explore the heart of Europe through its music.
This special brings together breathtaking visuals, rich storytelling and stirring performances of 19th century anthems from across the continent. Each composition — whether Strauss from Austria, Verdi from Italy or Elgar from England — tells the story of a nation’s identity, struggles, and triumphs. With Rick’s signature insights providing historical and cultural context, the music becomes more than just notes on a page — it becomes a powerful expression of freedom and unity.
Much like travel, music has the ability to broaden our perspectives and deepen our understanding of the world. As the one-hour program unfolds, it becomes clear that these pieces are more than nationalistic pride — they are echoes of revolutions, movements, and aspirations for a better future. The program culminates with Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy,” the official anthem of the European Union, symbolizing a continent united in its diversity.
Whether you’re a longtime classical music lover or simply enjoy Rick’s passion for storytelling, Rick Steves’ Europe: A Symphonic Journey offers a moving and immersive television experience. Tune in to CET and ThinkTV16 on Thursday, April 3, at 8pm and let the music take you on a journey through history, across borders and into the very soul of Europe.
This month, SHOWCASE with Barbara Kellar presents an episode highlighting the intersection of art, history and remembrance. Cincinnati Ballet’s David Morse and Taylor Carrasco join Barbara to discuss Our Story, which looks at the unique singularity of history’s darkest chapter – the Holocaust – and asks profound questions about what is required of each of us to appreciate our shared humanity.
Joining the conversation is Jackie Congedo, CEO of the Nancy & David Wolf Holocaust and Humanity Center and Monique Rothschild, a survivor of the Holocaust.
Tune in to SHOWCASE with Barbara Kellar for this important conversation on Saturday, April 19, at 6:30pm on CET and Sunday, April 20, at 8:30pm on CET Arts. Learn more at: CETconnect.org/showcase/, cballet.org/performances/ directorsvision/ and holocaustandhumanity.org/.
We have officially wrapped the first broadcast season of our regional, community affairs initiative, Brick by Brick: Solutions for a Thriving Community. Our first episode aired in September 2024, with new episodes released each month. All six broadcast episodes are now available for streaming on the PBS App and our website. This season, our team of journalists investigated the housing crisis on both local and national levels. Throughout the episodes, they explored solutions to the lack of affordable and available housing such as predictive data, housing choice vouchers, adaptive reuse and so much more. Stream the episodes and check out stories, podcast episodes and educational resources on our website at CETconnect.org/brick-by-brick/ or thinktv.org/brickby-brick/.
Tickets are still available for our annual CET is ME event this month! This year’s theme, PBS KIDS at Heart, takes attendees back to school as we honor local educators with The Dr. O’dell M. Owens Community Hero Award. As a long-time volunteer, Dr. Owens’ support for CET and many, many other organizations in our community was truly heroic. In that light, we are honoring other, unsung community heroes who have chosen to walk the same path as Dr. Owens.
Mark your calendars for CET is ME on Thursday, April 10, from 5:30pm to 9pm at Longworth Hall in Cincinnati. Tickets are $100 each and include dinner, two cocktails and an evening of activities with live music (adults only). We hope to see you there as we remember the PBS KIDS we all are at heart as lifelong learners with PBS programming and honor educational heroes in our community. Get your tickets and learn more on our website: CETconnect.org/cet-is-me/.
Brian has been a member of CET since 2019. He has worked in the Information Technology field for just over 40 years. In his profession, he is always learning new things and says that the educational content is one of the reasons PBS programming has appealed to him so much over the years. Brian is inspired to support CET because it is a way to give back and support programming while enjoying the streaming content whenever he wants.
Brian likes that PBS programming is both entertaining and educational. He has been watching for decades, starting with shows like This Old House, The New Yankee Workshop and MotorWeek. Brian’s kids, who are now in their twenties, grew up watching PBS KIDS programming. They valued the shows so much that they elected not to get cable or satellite. Brian is inspired by PBS personalities such as Tom Silva. He enjoys watching This Old House for the combination of the storytelling, projects and the opportunity to learn about new building techniques and fascinating products. Brian is also inspired by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. and said it is amazing to hear the stories that are uncovered on Finding Your Roots. He notes that some of the stories are uplifting, while others are very sad and somber. However, they are real, and they capture the full spectrum of the human experience.
In his free time, Brian can be found enjoying walks, hiking and traveling. He has a passion for photography and takes pleasure in capturing images of nature, landscapes and sunsets. Typically, he is found behind the camera rather than in front of it.
