The work of César Meneghetti is since the end of the nighties characterized by a profound interest on social issues and a constant enquire on forms of language. Usually, his previous works were based on artistic “mapping of the places“ and the people who were living in. He observes correspondences and creates a new time-and-space connection. His work is in between video, film, documentary, conceptual research and photography. He is concentrated to the idea of identity and memory, later he started to be focused also on different kinds of diversity. He observed in particular various groups in society, from Brazilian urban motorbike couriers, Italians during religious rituals, a group of South-American football players in Italy, African peasants fighting against the advance of the Sahara or mental disabled people working with art. In 2007, a new phase of his career started with K_ LAB - INTERACTING ON THE REALITY INTERFACE (Mixed Media, Niger, 2007-2008) when his research embraced the visual arts, cinema and mixed media along with relational art, followed by the projects THIS_ORIENT (Mixed Media, Vietnam HK, 2006-2011) and I\O _IO È UN ALTRO (mixed media/relational, Italy, 2010-2013) with 200 mental and physical disabled people of the Santo Egidio’s Community art labs, invited work for the 55th Venice Biennale. As an independent filmmaker, he has performed dozens of films and author videos: 1 feature film, 7 documentaries, 88 short films and experimental videos, as well as collaborating with Jane Campion and Roberto Benigni and being produced by Nanni Moretti. About his work were written three theses of master’s degree in Italy University of Rome. Quoted in the books “MLAC Index” (AAVV, 2012) Meneghetti is one of the 22 contemporary artists analysed in the volume “Art Iperconteporanea - un certain parrot sguardo” of the Italian art historian Simonetta Lux. He is one of the 99 artists selected in the anthology “Made in Brazil - 30 years of Brazilian video”, organized by Arlindo Machado. It idealizes, organizes and realizes the design of the artist books “this_placements” (Gangemi, Rome, 2012), “I\O - 55. Biennale di Venezia” (Maretti, San Marino, 2013) and Maretti, San Marino , 2015), “I\O_ CESAR MENEGHETTI” (Silvana Editori, Milano, 2015). Currently researches and develops his new projects in São Paulo where now he lives and works.

BORDERLANDS / ZONE DI CONFINI, video installation, 10’, HD, 2018. César Meneghetti together with 52 artists from the Art Workshops of the Community of Sant’Egidio make their voices through on worrying themes affecting not only Italy but the whole world. Inclusion/Exclusion is an exhibition probing the space of collective emotions, vis a vis the paradoxes of contemporaneity. The pieces exhibited place themselves at the end of a thorough process of training and deepening. Meneghetti once again entangles his work with theirs: the dialogic and educational encounter with the artist starts a process of co-responsibility and two way participation. The social and cultural representation and transformation of the surrounding world got strengthen, as much as the action of the Art Workshops towards a freed creativity.

DOPPIO SCHERMO / DOUBLE SCREEN ARTIST FILM AND VIDEO IN ITALY FROM THE ’60S TO THE PRESENT A CURA DI BRUNO MARINO E GIULIA FERRACCI

O PERCURSO AUSENTE / THE ABSENT PATH The Absent Path, an introduction to the artistic production of César Meneghetti, consolidated in recent years abroad and held in various parts of the world. This platform will open the door to an interdisciplinary dialogue covering emergency issues, addressing two apparently disconnected critical fields: groups in territories of social fragility and creative use of technology in the arts, relating them to fully understand the true meaning of life and our time.

video link : https://vimeo.com/236901281 (password: meneghetti) Zero > N moto continuum. A series of imaginary circles traced by a motoboy (courier) in a roundabout of São Paulo. The city has the worldwide primate in traffic accidents. At least one motoboy dies in the streets, leaving the asphalt, the most precious commodity they have: life itself. All circles bring a truth about themselves, they are an interpretation of the same phenomenon of movement, but they also allude to vicious circles, illusory trappings, existential inertia, life cycles and the infinite.

PRÊMIO BRASIL ARTE CONTEMPORÂNEA (FUNDAÇÃO BIENAL DE S. PAULO) PRÊMIO GLOBO TRICOLORE (ITÁLIA)
19 November 2015 – 17 January 2016 CÉSAR MENEGHETTI. I\O_ IO È UN ALTRO After his presence at the 55th Venice Biennale, the exhibition by César Meneghetti presents at MAXXI Rome a new series of works born within the ambit of the I\O_ IO È UN ALTRO project. In Meneghetti’s works the disabled people met by the artist present themselves as persons, perfectly capable of producing thought, space and vision, persons that know, remember, valuate, work, love and create. Over the course of four years, the research phase of this project has involved over 200 people with mental disabilities who live in Rome, through a multidisciplinary approach realised with the Art Workshops of the Comunità di Sant’Egidio in order to investigate the concept of confines. The long process of research and education, workshop and creative actions will be narrated in the book that will accompany the exhibition I\O _IO È UN ALTRO, putting up for discussion the idea of ability/disability, frequently founded on prejudice.
2013_ I\O OPERA #01 - VIDEOCABINE #3 (38’, HD, Italy). trailer: https://vimeo.com/70705036 full video link : https://vimeo.com/70688961 The VIDEOBOOTH ‘frames’ its interlocutors, recording their every gaze, gesture, stance, and words (including the words of those who cannot utter them, and type on a keyboard instead). Meneghetti has extrapolated a vivid sequence of stills which, edited into a quadripartite pattern, come into mutual exchange and interaction. What ensues has the appearance of a long take, although the sequence is in fact intricately and invisibly edited: providing a key to the overall project, the work portrays the disabled in some form of dialogue with each other that involves the audience too.
2015_ I\O OPERA #03 - EX-SISTENTIA (50 videos of 3’ each, HD, Italy). one of the 50 single channel video link : https://vimeo.com/58404875 Gabriele Tagliaferro is affected by an acute form of autism. With Ex-sistentia, César Meneghetti makes visible his awareness of a distance between his body and his intended actions and ideations. Ex-sistentia thus reveals to the art-viewing public how Gabriele perceives the space around him and how he experiences his own thoughts. Fifthy small monitors display the slowly revolving image of Gabriele, taken within the video booth. Word-fragments typed on a computer come at the close of each apparition. With each monitor displaying a different movement and the simultaneous sound of words and tunes in Gabriele’s own voice, we gradually come close to the root of his message that ‘all is word’.
2015_ I\O OPERA #08 - PASSAGES-LANDSCAPES (4 videos of 6’ each, HD, Italy). video link: https://vimeo.com/146546439 Life-size images of people appear on four monitors, as they stand upright and walk rightward and leftward with their eyes shut. A metaphor for existence, of our being ephemeral, passing forms – either ignored or unaware. Constant movement is the only way for us not to be mired down in mediocrity. Dislocation in space is a constant loss of balance. Walking, passing, transiting are images of our existential condition. Imbalance and lack of certainty are our only certainty.
2015_ I\O_WORK #06 LOVISTORI 9-channel audio-installation, digital print onto dibond, 150 X 230 cm, red board. The photograph tells of another life for Patrizia Nasini and another story for Vincenzo Camelia. The old life, related in their own voice, is no longer there and remains unseen. An entrance hall. A kitchen. A bedroom. A large photograph dominates the others. She, dressed in white. He, in dark dress. A small, happy, normal couple of newlyweds. Patrizia had been neither ‘normal’ nor happy beforehand. Behind the image, beyond the photograph, lie stories that no image can tell or enclose within itself.
2015_ I\O_WORK #17 UNTITLED digital print onto dibond, 100 X 177 cm I\O. 1\0. The one represents the in\dependent man, the man who fulfils social functions. The zeroes represent the failures, the misfits, the imperfect, the uncertain, the artists, the madmen. There’s something more between the ones and the zeroes. Thus, the binary code, icon of i\o, creates a human landscape made also of digital noise and glitches. Experiencing i\o revealed to me a sort of super humanity, thanks to error, the unforeseen, the flawed, human noise in the digital age, where art once again meets life in this paradoxical numerical process. I\o [me], those who from zero to n dimensions also turn into us [we].

Art cannot achieve its objective if it precludes something or someone.” In Meneghetti’s works the disabled people met by the artist present themselves as persons, perfectly capable of producing thought, space and vision, persons that know, remember, valuate, work, love and create. Over the course of four years, the research phase of this project has involved over 200 people with mental disabilities who live in the capital, through a multidisciplinary approach realised with the Art Workshops of the Comunità di Sant’Egidio in order to investigate the concept of confines. (venice) requiem is a little memorial that follows traces of a memory that has never been lived. Reviewing the past in the present, a trip to the city of the author’s ancestors creates an intimate connection between subjective experience and detached perception. Invited by Irma Arestizábal to perform a work for the inauguration of the Latin American Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 53, this video becomes a tribute to the South American curator who died a few days before the inauguration.
