Staff Showcase MEET THIS WEEK’S VALUED TEAM MEMBER I am in my first year as a Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments (TSVI or TVI) at CESA 7, and am currently working toward my Master's in Special Education, with an emphasis on teaching students who are blind or visually impaired. A TVI provides specialized instruction and support to individuals who are blind or have low vision. This can include braille instruction, assistive technology instruction, collaborating with teachers and staff, providing adapted materials and resources, and ensuring that all of my students have access to their school environments in the ways that work best for them!

Previously, I worked for 5 years in the Brillion School District as a Special Education teacher. I now work in 15 school districts across the CESA 7 region and have enjoyed getting to know all of the teachers, staff, and students I now have the pleasure of working with! This new role has provided me with so many opportunities to network with other CESA employees from around the state. The Vision and Orientation and Mobility professionals have been especially supportive and welcoming as I navigate learning braille, understanding the everchanging assistive technology, and growing in how I best support my students.

Outside my role at CESA 7, I currently serve as a three-year volunteer Captain for the Boys' and Girls' Brigade in Neenah. During the fall and winter months, I volunteer with the evening program Downtown, and spend a fair amount of time at Camp Onaway volunteering during the spring and summer!

My partner, Wesley, and I love spending our time with our two dogs, Briggs and Freya, and tackling the many home projects I have started (and may still be in progress!) around the house. This summer, we hope to finish our backyard so we can host our family and friends.

District Spotlight – The School District of Ashwaubenon C E L E B R AT I N G C O L L A B O R AT IV E I M PAC T The School District of Ashwaubenon continues to demonstrate what is possible when collaboration, vision, and commitment to multilingual learners come together.

Over the past two school years, the district’s EL Team has partnered with CESA 7 to deepen instructional practices and strengthen systems of support for students.

Facilitated by Beth Vande Hey, Learning Specialist at CESA 7, this collaborative work has focused on building the knowledge and capacity of the EL team.

During the 2024–2025 school year, the EL Team concentrated on strengthening their understanding and application of the WIDA English Language Development (ELD) Standards Framework. Through ongoing professional learning, the team built shared language, deepened their understanding of language development, and examined how the ELD Standards can guide intentional instructional decision-making.

This year, the team has taken the work even further. Moving from theory to practice, they selected a content unit and are engaging in a collaborative process to intentionally align the ELD Standards with a content unit, down to the lesson level.

Together, they are: Identifying the key language demands within the content unit Designing integrated language lessons that explicitly develop students’ academic language Creating meaningful scaffolds to ensure multilingual learners can access, engage in, and demonstrate their understanding of grade-level content This work reflects a powerful shift from supporting language in isolation to embedding language development within core instruction. By aligning standards, instruction, and scaffolds, the team is working to ensure that multilingual learners are both challenged and supported. It is a journey.

Tammy Nicholson, the director of pupil services in the Ashwaubenon School District, shared, “Beth provides focused leadership that helps the team stay aligned in their work. Her guidance in integrating the WIDA standards into daily practice ensures meaningful support for multilingual learners.”

Looking ahead, the EL Team is committed to expanding this work through collaborative partnerships across the district. Their goal is to build the capacity of additional staff members through co-planning to co-serve—creating shared ownership of language development and strengthening outcomes for all students.

The School District of Ashwaubenon’s dedication to sustained professional learning and collaborative practice is a model of how districts can move from compliance to coherence—placing language, equity, and instructional excellence at the center of their work.
