The Brillion Public School District and CESA 7 have partnered together through the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction’s (DPI) Assessment Professional Learning Series. Brillion High School is leveraging this partnership to refine classroom based assessments, ensuring classroom-level data accurately reflects the high standards of statewide assessments like the ACT.

The collaboration began with a focus on assessment Depth of Knowledge (DOK) and the development of assessment blueprints. These steps have allowed the district to examine the rigor of their assessments and ensure they are aligned with academic standards as well as college and career readiness. To ensure these shifts take root in daily practice, the partnership has transitioned into individual coaching cycles.
Currently, this work is being highlighted in the high school math department By focused analysis of student responses by specific learning targets and success criteria, the coaching process is helping to bridge the gap between assessment and instruction.
A key component of this initiative is student agency. The teacher and Ted Selker, CESA 7 Data and Assessment Specialist, are co-creating tools that allow students to reflect on their own learning and provide the teacher opportunity to respond to those reflections in real-time This approach turns the assessment process into a conversation, helping students understand exactly where they are in their learning journey and what steps they need to take next.
"We are focused on student growth, which means that we need a steady supply of accurate data about their progress and whether they are meeting benchmarks,” says Principal Elissa Hoffman. “Working on our assessments has allowed us to improve both the quality and the quantity of that data "
This ongoing partnership between Brillion High School and CESA 7 underscores a proactive approach to educational excellence. By building sustainable systems for data-informed instruction, the district is empowering both educators and students to reach their full potential.
