hen the young native of Madrid arrived in Havana towards the end of the 19th century, he could never have imagined that two decades later he would become one of the country’s most popular painters; nor could he have imagined that his landscape paintings; and especially his still lifes of flowers and fruits, would become the decoration of choice for dining rooms and other spaces in Havana homes.

In addition to all this, what Gil García could not even venture to guess was that, despite the success he achieved, later Cuban historiography would render him a virtual unknown – a lack of awareness that to this day has impeded an understanding of his rightful place and his contributions within the continuum of Cuban art.

The overall trend has been for critics, based upon a paradigm of the avant-garde, to demonize his name and his output; they doomed him to oblivion, as though his skills as an artist were second-rate and not worthy of any attention. This attitude is in stark contrast, however, to the actual success the artist seems to have enjoyed during the first quarter of the 20th century. His permanent studio/showroom at the “El Arte” shop, an amazingly large output and customer base, the daily commissions, the sales…all are indicative of the widespread acceptance of his personal style. His popularity is evidence of the changing tastes of a public that had begun to prefer local motifs, which is reason enough to embark on a reevaluation of his works, taking into account the historical context in which they were produced.

Within the panorama of Cuban visual arts, Juan Gil García appears to be a great forgotten figure. The lack of a detailed biography has even generated contradictions regarding his life, the date of his arrival in Cuba and other milestones in his career. However, after comparing the different sources that allude to the painter, as well as conducting an analysis of some of his personal documents, it may be said with some certainty that the artist’s year of birth was 18791. The son of Juan Gil y Rubia, a prestigious music teacher at the Madrid Conservatory, and of Natividad García, the child received a first-rate education from an early age: he completed his primary school studies at the Colegio de Jesús, his baccalaureate studies at the Colegio Hispanoamericano – from which he graduated at the age of 15 – and entered the Universidad Central with the intention of studying Law. Initially, his affinity for the arts began as a parallel interest. An early vocation led him to take drawing classes at the Escuela de Artes y Oficios art school in his home town, but it was not until after the death of his mother that he decided to fully devote himself to painting. At the time, Gil García was approximately 18 years old.

The choice of art as a final career path encouraged him to broaden his spectrum of references: FranceValladolid-Madrid-Havana are the different stops along a personal voyage filled with searching, studying and the development of a unique style that would ensure him the favor of the audience that he aspired to reach as an artist. Near the end of the 19th century, the trip to France – especially to Paris – was a matter of top priority.

Based on the way that Rigol begins his reference to Gil García, it would appear that his comment is of an approximate nature, other historical pieces of evidence do however uphold this date. I refer to the Certificate of Nationality issued to the applicant in January 1919, when he was 39 years old, according to what is specified in the document itself; as well as the Certificate of Membership in Havana’s Asociación de Dependientes del Comercio (Association of Trade-Dependent Individuals), a document that is dated August 1924, when the painter was already 45 years old. Identified as the mecca of the bohemian lifestyle, of fashion and of the art trade, this epicenter would become a gathering place for artists from all corners of the world. Thus, this region of France must have been the stage for possibilities that were much more varied than what has generally been recognized. Together with the currents that gradually marked the movement toward modern painting, other esthetic leanings not directly related to the new ideas also co-existed.

These alternate styles were likewise a part of the web of tastes that distinguished the European cultural scene at that time.

Upon his return to Spain, it is likely that Gil García briefly took up residence in Valladolid where, according to curator Olga López Núñez, he took some classes at the Escuela de Bellas Artes under the tutelage of Luciano Sánchez Santarén and Miguel Pineda. These names are then added to the ever-growing roster of individuals who served as his teachers, including Ángel Marquina, Alfredo Pera and Nicolás Mejías who were his professors at Madrid’s Escuela de Artes y Oficios. While within the history of Spanish art it is difficult to keep track of these painters, characterize their performance and, as a result, identify any influences on the young creator, we can, nonetheless, conjecture about some points of interest. Taking into account the behavior of Spanish art during the 19th century, these artists should have been part of a Romantic/Realist tradition to which Gil García would owe a great debt, even though he never received extensive professional training. The exquisite execution, the impeccable drawing and the mastery of color and composition that he achieved in his works attest to previous training, but they are owed above all to a natural skill applied to the creative process itself.

The information about the teachers connected to his educational phase is disperse. In the book Galería Biográfica de Artistas Españoles del Siglo XIX, Manuel Ossorio mentions Nicolás Mejía and Alfredo Perea Rojas (perhaps Pera). The former being “awarded a grant in 1872 by the Provincial Commission of Badajoz to continue his studies in Rome, from where he sent the regulatory works”2; the latter being “a native of Madrid and disciple of the Academia de San Fernando and the Imperial Academy of Paris, better known for his many drawings for illustrated publications than for his paintings, although some of these were quite noteworthy”3.

Among all his mentors, Miguel Pineda is perhaps the best known. The Enciclopedia Universal Ilustrada Europeo-Americana has an entry for a painter by the same name, born in Adra, Almería. Miguel Pineda Montón (1828-1901) devoted himself primarily to portraiture along the lines of esthetic realism. He studied to be an artist in Granada, but he taught art in Valencia’s Escuela de Bellas Artes and from 1884 onward at Madrid’s Escuela de Artes y Oficios4. Judging from the facts, it was perhaps here and not in Valladolid where Gil García met him. At any rate, what is important is that the teachings he received were heavily influenced by the style of Velázquez, an artist that Pineda faithfully and deeply admired5.

This fondness for Velázquez and for 17th-century painting in general was not an isolated fact in turn-of-thecentury Spanish art. The arrival of Romanticism toward the second quarter of the 19th century had spurred interest in tradition as a path toward recovering the national creative genius. That historical mindset led the Romantics to rediscover Goya and Murillo, while the Realist painters became obsessed with the atmospheric effects of Velázquez’s painting techniques. This variety of esthetic interests and points of reference makes it difficult to describe in few words the fin-de-siècle artistic sensibility, because in practice the different trends often intertwined with one another. Particularly near the end of the century, the Romantic/Realist spirit assimilated the new features of Impressionism and of Symbolist Idealism, managing to co-exist and blend in among the plurality of artistic idioms that characterized the epoch.

It is within this context of multiple perspectives that Gil García takes the steps of an accelerated learning process that lead him back to the capital. By then, Sorolla had been a total triumph in Madrid, after being awarded the Gold Medal at the 1895 National Exhibition. In large part thanks to his arrival, and to the influx of other Valencia natives who also moved to this city during the last quarter of the 19th century, the Madrid art scene began to undergo substantial changes. To the strong Realist tradition of Castilian art, the Mediterranean painters brought new inroads in painting, making it possible to incorporate all the latest developments in art: the sensitivity to the natural world, plein air painting, and the capture of light as the painting’s key issue6.

At the close of the century, Madrid appears to have been a competitive marketplace. Local painters, those hailing from other regions throughout the Peninsula, as well as the vast number of young artists arriving from abroad – primarily from Latin America and the United States – to supplement their studies at the Academia de San Fernando and/or visit the Museo del Prado, all struggled to attain success there. Faced with such pressures – or perhaps as a result of other causes as yet unknown – Juan Gil García decided to embark on a journey in the opposite direction, with Havana, Cuba, as his final destination.

Jorge Rigol sets the date of the painter’s arrival in the capital city around 1899. Little is known of the painter’s first years in Cuba, but inserting himself in a completely foreign environment must have posed major challenges for him. Without friends to open the doors to immediate success, his dreams of winning the public’s affection may have been initially cut short. The 20th century was beginning and at the dawn of the new century, Cuba was changing its political status from that of a colony to a republic7.

In a climate of wildly varying expectations, the country set out to continue with certain plans that had been curtailed in the midst of the upheavals of the previous five-year period, as well as to define the current strategies for driving progress, cultural development and, as a result, the nation’s own advancement. If on other levels of intellectual activity there may have been some early questionings, this was not the case with the visual arts where, during the first thirty years, more or less, there seemed to be a sense of satisfaction, of modernity and newness, of a republican culture, of a new century.

The Havana through whose streets Gil García walked was the epicenter of this activity. Upon the reopening of the Academia de San Alejandro in 1900, many other initiatives were added, usually with the support of the private sector. Thanks to the creation of institutions aimed at promoting, circulating and marketing both national and foreign artwork, room was made for the young man from Madrid to make his talents known to a potential clientele whose esthetic ideals were modeled not just on what was being exhibited, but also on the frequent art commentaries appearing in publications devoted to culture and the arts.

Hailing from Spain, it is not hard to understand that he should try to seek refuge initially in the economic, cultural and social protection offered by the regional social clubs8. For some time he was a member of Havana’s Centro Asturiano, where he gave drawing lessons. However, teaching does not seem to have been his main vocation, which is why the artist left this post to dedicate himself fully to decorative painting, a decision that would very shortly guarantee him tremendous success. While his participation in the 1916 and 1917 Fine Arts Salons probably contributed to the growing demand for his paintings, his contract with the “El Arte” shop was key to ensuring that his works of art were marketed to a vast buying public.

The Spanish regional social clubs arose in Cuba in light of the founding of the first charitable societies – the Catalonian one in 1840 and the Galician one in 1872. In the years following these initial experiences, the Centro Asturiano, Centro Balear, Centro Canario, and Centro de Dependientes del Comercio, among others, were all created. Under the country’s new political order in the 20th century, these organizations “maintained the social and cultural cohesion of the Spanish population living on the island.” Cf. Located at Calle Galiano, No. 506, the “El Arte” business establishment was founded in 1907. In its window displays, this unique shop presented interested buyers with an array of items for sale that included art supplies, works of art and hand-crafted objects. We will see Gil García work from this platform at a fever pitch, producing paintings featuring the two primary themes that define his career as a painter: landscapes and still lifes.

Although he gained greater fame for his still lifes, Gil painted landscapes assiduously. In the works of this type, two subject matters stand out: the Cuban countryside and scenes of foreign climes. Considering the dates on which some of his winterscapes were completed, these appear to have been painted from the comfort of his studio in Havana.

The solitary view, the snow, the presumably inhabited cottage, the overcast sky…these are the elements that the artist assembles in his attempt to create a realistic scene9. Much more frequent are the typical vistas of Cuba, especially of the countryside. In these cases, it is likewise possible to identify recurring motifs, such as palm trees, thatch-roofed huts, streams and tropical vegetation. As a rule, these attractive scenes of nature do not include the human form, whose presence is suggested by the construction depicted.

In the context of early 20th-century Havana, the predilection for the rural landscape was part of an interest shared by other painters of the era. Starting in the second half of the 19th century, this theme gradually became a channel for expressing the contents associated with the notion of identity, of everything Cuban, if perhaps from a more representative than problematizing approach. Romantics and Realists will try – each with their own resources and in their own way – to capture the beauty of the Cuban environment. Thus, while some prefer violet-tinged hues and sunsets, others delight in reproducing on canvas the shimmering effects of the tropical light and the image derived from contact with the natural model.

The subject matters promoted by painters coinciding in the first few decades of the 20th century essentially moved within this repertory of possible choices. Gil García opted for inclusion; thus his landscapes are sometimes very close to the romanticism of Esteban Chartrand and other times to the realism of Valentín Sanz Carta. His roots as a painter did not lie in Cuba; rather, he received this 19th-century inheritance through contact with quite a few co-existing artists, whom he perhaps met in the context of the exhibitions or – who knows – perhaps at the Academia de San Alejandro itself, which at that time was located around the corner from the “El Arte” atelier.

One way or the other, the truth is that certain analogies may be made between his landscapes in a Realist style and the paintings of Eduardo Morales (1862-1938) or Antonio Rodríguez Morey (1872-1967). The predilection for panoramic vistas, the prominent role played by nature, the recurring presence of palm trees as a symbol by antonomasia of Cuba’s flora, the impeccable drawing, the deft but careful brushstrokes, and the brilliant colors are some of the parallels that insert the Madrid native into the tradition of Cuban art of that period. Undoubtedly, he knew how to move among the different idioms by using, and making his own, an environment that did not belong to him by birth.

This sense of belonging and exaltation of his criollo surroundings would find a privileged outlet in his treatment of the still life. In the context of Cuban visual arts, it was Juan Gil García who would model and systematize the behavior of a genre whose precedents in the country were few and far between. Although in the history of European painting the depiction of inanimate objects had been practiced extensively and had its corresponding theoretical discussion10, in Cuba’s case, prior to the first few decades of the 20th century, we only find isolated attempts made in that direction.

A case in point is a still life signed R. C. Bear (Ramón C. Bear), dated 1879. Little is known about the life and career of this painter, beyond the fact that he joined the faculty of the Academia de San Alejandro as a professor of Basic Drawing during the time that it was headed by Francisco Cisneros11, and his mastery of the paintbrush.

This second aspect is evident in his work titled Viandas [Root Vegetables] a naturalist still life in which he pays homage to the exuberance and variety of the country’s produce.

While its theoretical conceptualization came about in the 17th and 18th centuries, the origins of still life painting in terms of practice may date back to the world of the ancient Greeks, where painters began to apply illusionist effects, with every consequence, to the depiction of everyday objects. Following Bear’s work, it will be necessary to wait several decades to identify new attempts at the genre. Near the final decade of the 19th century, Armando Menocal (1863-1942) and Adriana Billini (1865-1946) are some of the artists who, through their approach to different themes such as portraiture or genre painting, set the stage for the appearance of still life painting. However, it is actually Gil García, whose works will later be attacked and condemned to ostracism as the embodiment of an obsolete Academicism, who typifies a form that must then wait until the late 1930’s to experience new transformations in the poetics of Amelia Peláez.

In the years following the creation of the Republic, a fervent patriotic spirit is noted in the general Cuban population. The end of the war and the sense of freedom generated by the knowledge that they were independent from centuries of colonial rule, created a favorable conjunction of circumstances in the midst of which “appears Gil García spilling (…) his fruit-filled cornucopia”12. There was no dining room in Havana that could resist including one of his paintings on its walls. They had become the ultimate expression of everything criollo, the decoration par excellence throughout the entire island. This amazing popularity was also remarked upon by journalist Octavio de la Suarée who, without counting himself among his admirers, had to admit that “rare was the dining room that did not boast in this capital city – referring to Havana – his usual tropical fruits in oft-time repeated arrangements in which coconuts, pineapples and sapotes gave their characteristic touch”13.

While analogies and differences may be found between the still life paintings of Gil García and the previous tradition – insofar as the painting’s composition, the handling of light and color, as well as other pictorial technique elements are concerned – what really sets them apart derives from his selection of motifs: tropical fruits. The variety and beauty of the fruits he recreates, at times in combined groupings and other times by themselves, ultimately becomes a metaphor for the fertility of the Cuban soil, in sublimation of the ideas of opulence and progress to which the young nation aspired. Perhaps unintentionally, Gil García’s artwork would become the ideal mise en scène for channeling a patriotism that Rigol classifies as “ingenuous”, but which infallibly set the groundwork for questionings of another kind.

In most cases, his fruit still lifes share a common scheme, characterized by the horizontal layout of the painting, the placement of the fruit on the ground or spread around a basket in what appear to be casual groupings, and the contrast between the illuminated foreground and the neutral background painted in dark tones. While the works produced in the first decade of the 20th century share to some extent the austerity of the style of either Zurbarán or Harnett14, Gil García soon abandons this hermetic realism in favor of a greater voluptuousness of what is being depicted. In his best-known works, the fruit, either whole or in slices, is put on display for the viewer; he shows both the outer peel and the inner pulp – shiny, appetizing – inviting the viewer to taste and enjoy it.

In contrast with his contemporary, fellow artist Antonio Sánchez Araujo (1887-1946), whose still life paintings featuring a careful estheticism are set in indoor environments, the painter from Madrid prefers outdoor spaces.

While the refined compositions of Araujo border on Symbolism, Gil García seems to be more interested in describing the exoticism of things in their natural state. As a result, he gradually does away with anything that may be extraneous and increases the catalog of fruits to be presented; he turns each composition into a unique spectacle thanks to the play of colors, shapes and textures that share space on the canvas15.

The fruit-themed still life paintings were often alternated with equally decorative floral compositions16. In these works, seemingly belonging to undefined indoor spaces, roses and chrysanthemums – or a combination of the two – predominate as the preferred varieties of flowers. The careful drawing and dramatic lighting are a constant, but the incorporation of new motifs favors explorations of another nature. Gil García focuses on both the bouquet of flowers and the vase that holds them; thus, these paintings become a showcase providing a sampling of the diversity and luxury of these vessels, whose details, textures and transparency are recreated by the artist.

Crisantemos, (Chrysanthemums), 1925, oil on canvas, 26 1/2 x 38 1/4 inches William Harnett (1848-1892), a painter born in Ireland, renewed the still life genre in North American painting at the close of the 19th century. Although it is not known for certain if Gil García was familiar with his work, considering that Harnett became the era’s most famous painter of still lifes, it is likely that he was a potential role model, either directly or through the paintings of other artists who were his contemporaries (John Haberle & John F. Within the cultural scenario of the early 20th century, the commercial success of Gil García’s artwork was totally unexpected. Familiar with the trompe l'oeil technique, he managed to capture the public’s sensibilities through an illusionism that, built upon a spectrum of references from his surroundings, involved different levels of sensibilities insofar as the interests, needs, set of values and preferences of the growing Cuban middle class.

According to Rigol himself, the demand for his paintings was on par with his fecundity. During the years between 1907 and the late 1920’s, approximately, his productivity reached remarkable levels. A natural agility for drawing – and perhaps the presence of one or another assistant – allowed him to paint at the rate of almost one painting per day in order to satisfy the appetites of a seemingly endless clientele. The systematic nature of his sales and the desire to reach the less wealthy led him to embark on a new and risky venture for that era: the lithographic printing of 50,000 copies of four of his paintings, an edition that surprisingly sold out completely.

There have been no lack of anecdotes, and sometimes even myths, about the way he painted and his life in general. The story goes that he would go to the market every morning to buy the different fruits that he was going to paint that day, that he was wont to place the easel in front of the general public and work with skill, and that on more than one occasion a client would wait while he finished the painting that had been commissioned.

Some say that his health deteriorated as the result of a nervous disorder and that the owner of the “El Arte” shop even put him up for some time at his farm located near Bejucal. Others say that his declining health was due to alcohol-related causes. It may have possibly been a combination of the two. What is known for certain is that Juan Gil García died in May of 193217, when his career was still in full swing and without being able to enjoy all the benefits of his fame.

The Diario de la Marina newspaper paid him posthumous homage on the first anniversary of his death. This source indicates his date of death as May 4, 1932. Meanwhile, on the back of one of the photos of the artist, this piece of information appears slightly different, with the date of death being indicated as May 3 of that same year. Cf. The phenomenon of which he was the main protagonist seems to have died with him. The emerging avantgarde furiously attacked his style and the lack of knowledge about the real Gil García became an alarming fact.

So much so that, upon including a picture of the artist in his Diccionario de Artistas Plásticos de Cuba, not even Rodríguez Morey is able to remember the date of his passing18.

If due to the volume of his output a certain degree of uneven quality may be found in his paintings, overall his artwork was characterized by careful craftsmanship and clean technique. But modern art was blazing new trails and it was from this perspective that his poetics were judged and the attempt was made, desperately, to surpass them. Perhaps this passion prevented them from seeing that the artwork of that painter from Madrid, who arrived in Havana just when the century and the Republic were about to be born, had accomplished its intended mission: in terms of art, to systematically insert the still life theme into the Cuban tradition; in terms of the overall public, to stimulate a taste for paintings depicting Cuban subject matters.

Although within the context of the state of Florida the artist has enjoyed greater visibility through several exhibits of his works and especially as a result of the marketing of his paintings, tracking down this forgotten artist continues to pose a challenge. From a perspective that prioritizes inclusion, Juan Gil García must be redeemed not just as an individual figure, but also as a part of the art history to which he belongs. These successive searches could continue revealing insights into the person who might very well be the most popular painter of the earliest decades of the Cuban Republic.

She has given lectures as a guest speaker at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana and has collaborated in research projects with this and other Cuban cultural institutions.

Biographical Synopsis 1879 Juan Gil García is born in Madrid, Spain, the son of Juan Gil y Rubia and Natividad García.

1894

He graduates with a baccalaureate degree from the Colegio Hispanoamericano which is a part of the Cardenal Cisneros institute, located in the neighborhood of Argüelles. He enters the Universidad Central with the intention of studying Law. It is during these years that he takes his first drawing lessons at Madrid’s Escuela de Artes y Oficios.

1897 At 18 years of age, following his mother’s death, he abandons his academic studies to devote himself

completely to painting.

1897- He travels to Paris to complete his studies. He moves to Valladolid, Spain, for a brief time, 1899 where he takes classes at that city’s Escuela de Bellas Artes. He returns to Madrid.

1899 He arrives in Havana. A few years later, he marries Dolores Delgado Hernández, a native of this city,

with whom he fathered two children named Juan Mateo and Natividad.

1900s One of his first jobs in Cuba was giving drawing lessons at the Centro Asturiano social club.

1916 He participates in the Fine Art Salons held during this year and in 1917 in Havana, Cuba.

1917 Bohemia magazine devotes seven full pages to reproducing several of his works: Cocos (Coconuts),

Anones (Sugar Apples), Mangos (Mangos), Zapodilla (Sapotes), Naranjas (Oranges), Plátanos (Bananas)

and Mameyes (Mameys).

1920s He is hired by the management of the “El Arte” atelier, although the precise date of his hiring is

unknown. He apparently worked for “El Arte” for over ten years and was connected to this establishment

until his death, so that judging by these dates he most likely started working there in the early 1920s.

This is the decade when he has the greatest artistic output. The marketing of his artwork is amazingly

widespread, so that even the remotest areas of the Island are aware of his paintings. Possibly sponsored

by “El Arte,” during this decade a lithographic printing is made of four of his works (two landscapes and

two compositions featuring Cuban fruits) in very large quantities. All the prints are sold.

1932 He dies in Havana on May 4.

1933 The Diario de la Marina daily newspaper pays

posthumous homage to him on the first anniversary

of his death.

1971 The Museo de Arte Colonial (Havana, Cuba) holds

the first individual exhibition of the artist under the name: First Quarter of the 20th Century.

His artwork is increasingly successful in Florida, following the arrival of several lots of paintings from Cuba, and also as the result of the efforts of several of his collectors. This is especially true of the Daytona Beach (FL) Museum of Arts and Sciences, an institution that houses several of his works, which facilitated a traveling exhibit of his paintings in different cities throughout the State.

uando aquel joven madrileño llegó a La Habana, en las postrimerías del siglo XIX, no podía imaginar que dos décadas después se convertiría en uno de los pintores más populares del país; tampoco que sus cuadros de paisajes, y especialmente los de flores y frutas, llegarían a ser la decoración preferida de los comedores y otras estancias de las residencias habaneras. Además de todo esto, lo que Gil García no podía siquiera suponer era que, a pesar del éxito obtenido, la historiografía cubana posterior tendería sobre su figura un velo de desconocimiento, que ha impedido hasta hoy la comprensión de su lugar y aportes dentro del continuo del arte cubano.

Como tendencia, la crítica construida desde el paradigma de la vanguardia satanizó su nombre y su producción; la confinó al olvido como si se tratase de una pintura de segunda categoría, incapaz de merecer atención alguna.

Esta actitud contrasta, sin embargo, con el éxito real que el artista parece haber disfrutado durante el primer cuarto del siglo XX. Su pensión en “El Arte”, una producción y clientela sorprendentes en número, los encargos diarios, las ventas… son indicativos de la aceptación de su estilo personal, evidencia de los gustos de un público que comenzaba a preferir los motivos locales, razón suficiente para iniciar una relectura de su obra a la luz de la lógica histórica en la que se inscribe.

En el panorama de las artes plásticas cubanas, Juan Gil García se nos presenta como un gran olvidado.

La ausencia de una biografía detallada ha generado aun contradicciones en cuanto a su ciclo vital, momento de llegada a Cuba y otros datos de importancia dentro de su carrera. Sin embargo, luego del cotejo de las distintas fuentes que aluden al pintor, así como del análisis de algunos de sus documentos personales, podría fijarse el año 1879 como la fecha de su nacimiento1. Hijo de Juan Gil y Rubia, prestigioso profesor de música del Conservatorio de Madrid, y de Natividad García, el joven recibió desde pequeño una educación esmerada: cursa la primera enseñanza en el Colegio de Jesús, el bachillerato en el Colegio Hispanoamericano – donde se gradúa con 15 años de edad – e ingresa en la Universidad Central con la idea de estudiar Derecho. Su acercamiento a las artes comenzó siendo inicialmente un interés paralelo. Una temprana vocación lo conduce a tomar clases de dibujo en la Escuela de Artes y Oficios de su ciudad natal, pero no será hasta después de la muerte de su madre que decide dedicarse por completo a la pintura. Para la fecha Gil contaba aproximadamente con 18 años.

La elección del arte como carrera definitiva lo insta a ampliar el espectro de referencias: FranciaValladolid-Madrid-La Habana, son las distintas estaciones de un viaje personal de búsquedas, de estudio y conformación de una manera propia que le garantizaría el favor del público al que aspiraba como artista.

Hacia fines del siglo XIX el viaje a Francia – especialmente a París – era asunto de primer orden.

Si por el modo en que Rigol inicia su alusión a Gil García su comentario parece tener la naturaleza de una referencia aproximada, otras pruebas históricas permiten sustentar esta fecha. Me refiero al Certificado de Nacionalidad expedido a favor del solicitante en enero de 1919, cuando contaba con 39 años, según el propio documento especifica; así como al Título de Socio de la Asociación de Dependientes del Comercio de la Habana, material fechado en agosto de 1924, cuando el pintor contaba ya con 45 años. Identificado como la meca de la vida bohemia, de la moda y el comercio del arte, este epicentro se convertiría en punto de encuentro para artistas de distintas latitudes. Así, la región gala debe haber constituido un escenario de posibilidades mucho más variadas de lo que generalmente se ha reconocido. Junto a las corrientes que marcaron gradualmente el tránsito hacia la pintura moderna, pervivían otras orientaciones estéticas, no directamente relacionadas con las nuevas ideas, pero que también formaron parte de la urdimbre de gustos que distinguió el horizonte cultural europeo de la época.

De vuelta a España es probable que Gil García se instalara brevemente en Valladolid, donde la curadora Olga López Núñez afirma que recibió algunas clases en la Escuela de Bellas Artes bajo las instrucciones de Luciano Sánchez Santarén y Miguel Pineda. Estos nombres pasan entonces a engrosar la nómina de aquellos que figuraron como sus maestros, dentro de la que igualmente se cuentan Ángel Marquina, Alfredo Pera y Nicolás Mejías, quienes fueron sus profesores en la Escuela de Artes y Oficios de Madrid. Si bien dentro de la historia del arte español se hace difícil seguir el rastro de estos pintores, caracterizar su desempeño e identificar consecuentemente influencias en el joven creador, podemos, no obstante, conjeturar algunas cuestiones de interés: teniendo en cuenta el comportamiento del arte español durante el siglo XIX, estos artistas debieron estar insertos en una tradición romántico/realista de la que Gil se convertirá en deudor, pese a no haber recibido una larga formación profesional. La exquisitez de la factura, el dibujo impecable y el dominio de los colores y la composición que logró en sus trabajos, dan fe de un entrenamiento previo, pero se deben sobre todo a una destreza natural ejercitada sobre la práctica misma de la creación.

La información sobre los maestros vinculados a su etapa formativa se caracteriza por ser dispersa. En el libro Galería Biográfica de Artistas Españoles del Siglo XIX, Manuel Ossorio alude a Nicolás Mejía y Alfredo Perea Rojas (quizás Pera). El primero «pensionado en 1872 por la Diputación Provincial de Badajoz para seguir sus estudios en Roma, desde donde remitió los trabajos reglamentarios»2; el segundo, «natural de Madrid y discípulo de la Academia de San Fernando y de la Imperial de París, más conocido por sus muchos dibujos para las publicaciones ilustradas que por sus cuadros, a pesar de ser bastante notable en algunos de estos»3.

Entre todos sus mentores Miguel Pineda resulta quizás el mejor conocido. La Enciclopedia Universal Ilustrada Europeo-Americana registra un pintor del mismo nombre, original de Adra, Almería. Miguel Pineda Montón (1828-1901) se dedicó fundamentalmente al retrato en la línea de la estética realista. Se había formado como artista en Granada, pero ejerció la enseñanza del arte en la Escuela de Bellas Artes de Valencia y desde 1884 en la de Artes y Oficios de Madrid4. A juzgar por los hechos, quizás fue en este sitio y no en Valladolid donde Gil García lo conoció. De cualquier manera, lo importante es que recibió sus enseñanzas fuertemente influidas por el estilo de Velázquez, de quien Pineda fue un constante y profundo admirador5.

Esta afición por Velázquez y por la pintura del siglo XVII en general, no constituía un hecho aislado dentro del arte español de fin de siglo. La llegada del Romanticismo hacia el segundo cuarto del XIX había exacerbado el interés por la tradición como un camino para la recuperación del genio creativo nacional. Esa voluntad historicista llevó a los románticos a redescubrir a Goya y a Murillo, mientras los pintores realistas se obsesionaron con los efectos atmosféricos de la pintura de Velázquez. Esta variedad de intereses estéticos y de referentes hace que la sensibilidad artística de fines de siglo sea difícil de caracterizar en pocos términos, porque en la práctica las distintas tendencias muchas veces se entrecruzaron. Sobre todo hacia el cierre del siglo, el espíritu romántico/ realista asimiló las novedades del impresionismo y del idealismo simbolista, logrando pervivir y confundirse entre la pluralidad de lenguajes que caracteriza la etapa.

Es en este contexto de perspectivas múltiples donde Gil García da los pasos de un acelerado aprendizaje que lo lleva nuevamente de regreso a la capital. Para entonces Sorolla había triunfado totalmente en Madrid, tras obtener la Medalla de Primera Clase en la Exposición Nacional de 1895. En buena medida gracias a su influjo, y al de otros valencianos que se establecieron igualmente en esta ciudad durante el último cuarto del siglo XIX, el panorama de la pintura madrileña comenzaba a experimentar sustanciales cambios. A la fuerte tradición realista del arte castellano, los pintores mediterráneos incorporaron nuevos caminos afiliados a la recepción de las novedades: la sensibilidad por el mundo natural, la pintura al aire libre y la captación de la luz como el problema fundamental del cuadro6.

A punto de terminar la centuria, Madrid parece haber sido una plaza competitiva donde los pintores locales, aquellos procedentes de otras regiones de la Península, así como el extenso número de jóvenes creadores que llegaban del extranjero – fundamentalmente de América Latina y Estados Unidos – para complementar sus estudios en la Academia de San Fernando y/o visitar el Museo del Prado, pujaban por alcanzar el éxito. Ante tales presiones – o quién sabe si por otras causas hasta el presente desconocidas – Juan Gil García decidió emprender un viaje a la inversa que tomó como punto de destino La Habana, Cuba.

Jorge Rigol marca la fecha de su llegada a la capitalina ciudad en torno a 1899. Poco se sabe de los primeros años que vivió el pintor en la Isla, pero insertarse en un contexto completamente ajeno debió suponer importantes retos. Sin amigos que abrieran para él las puertas del triunfo de manera inmediata, sus ilusiones de conquistar el afecto del público pueden haber sido inicialmente confrontadas.

Comenzaba el siglo XX y prácticamente con él, Cuba cambiaba su estatus político de colonia a república7.

Bajo un clima de expectativas nada homogéneas, el país se disponía tanto a dar continuidad a determinados planes que habían quedado truncos en medio de las convulsas condiciones del lustro anterior, como a definir las estrategias actuales para impulsar el progreso, el desarrollo de la cultura y por tanto, de la nación misma.

Si en otros niveles de la acción intelectual pueden haberse producido tempranos cuestionamientos, en las artes plásticas de los primeros treinta años, aproximadamente, parecía notarse un sentido de satisfacción, de modernidad y actualización, de cultura republicana, de siglo nuevo.

La Habana que recorrió Gil García era el epicentro de esta actividad. A la reapertura de la Academia de San Alejandro en el año 1900 se sumaron otras muchas iniciativas, usualmente respaldadas por el sector privado. La creación de instituciones orientadas hacia el fomento, circulación y comercialización del arte nacional y foráneo fue creando un espacio para que el joven madrileño diera a conocer sus dotes a una clientela potencial, cuyo ideal estético era modelado no sólo por lo que se exponía, sino también por los frecuentes comentarios sobre arte en las publicaciones de perfil cultural.

Siendo originario de España no es difícil comprender que intentara encontrar un amparo inicial en la cobertura económica, cultural y social que ofrecían las sociedades regionales8. Durante algún tiempo se integra al Centro Asturiano de La Habana, donde imparte clases de dibujo. Sin embargo, la docencia no parece ser su principal vocación, por lo que el artista abandona esta plaza para dedicarse plenamente a la pintura decorativa, que muy pronto le garantizaría un éxito rotundo. Aunque su participación en los Salones de Bellas Artes correspondientes a 1916 y 1917 debió incidir en la creciente demanda de sus pinturas, su contrato con “El Arte” fue un punto clave en el carácter expansivo de la comercialización de su obra.

Las sociedades regionales españolas surgen en Cuba a luz de la fundación de las primeras sociedades de beneficencia – catalana en 1840 y gallega en 1872. En los años sucesivos a estas experiencias iniciales se crearon el Centro Asturiano, Centro Balear, Centro Canario, y Centro de Dependientes del Comercio, entre otros. Ubicada en la calle Galiano, No. 506, la casa comercial “El Arte” se había fundado en el año 1907. En las vidrieras exteriores de exhibición esta peculiar tienda presentaba a los interesados la variedad de una oferta, que incluía la venta de enseres para la creación plástica, obras de arte y objetos artesanales. Desde esta plataforma veremos a Gil García trabajar con una productividad febril en los dos temas fundamentales de su carrera como pintor: el paisaje y la naturaleza muerta.

Aunque obtuvo mayor notoriedad por sus bodegones, Gil pintó paisajes con asiduidad. En las obras correspondientes a esta temática destacan dos líneas fundamentales: el paisaje cubano y foráneo. Considerando las fechas de realización de algunos de sus cuadros inspirados en regiones invernales, estos parecen haber sido pintados desde la comodidad de su taller en La Habana. El panorama solitario, la nieve, la choza presumiblemente habitada, el cielo entenebrecido…, son los elementos a los que el artista apela en su intención de construir un escenario verosímil9. Mucho más frecuentes son las vistas típicas del país, entre las que predominan las representaciones de la campiña. En estos casos es igualmente posible identificar motivos que se reiteran, tales como la palma, el bohío, el riachuelo y la vegetación tropical. Como tendencia, estos atractivos espectáculos naturales no incluyen a la figura humana, cuya presencia se sugiere a través de lo construido.

En el contexto habanero de comienzos del pasado siglo, la predilección por el paisaje rural formaba parte de un interés compartido por otros pintores contemporáneos. Desde la segunda mitad del siglo XIX esta temática se fue convirtiendo gradualmente en un canal para la expresión de los contenidos asociados a la noción de lo identitario, de lo propio de Cuba, si bien desde un enfoque más representativo que problematizador. Románticos y realistas intentarán – cada quien con sus recursos y maneras propias – captar la belleza del entorno cubano.

Así, mientras unos prefieren los tonos violáceos y el atardecer; otros gustarán de llevar al lienzo los efectos reverberantes de la luz tropical y la imagen derivada del contacto con el modelo natural.

Las promociones de pintores coincidentes en las primeras décadas del XX se mueven en lo esencial dentro de este repertorio de elecciones posibles. Gil elige por la inclusión; de tal forma su obra paisajística se sitúa unas veces muy cerca del romanticismo de Esteban Chartrand y otras en la estela de Valentín Sanz Carta. No se formó como pintor en la Isla, pero debió recibir esta herencia decimonónica a través del contacto con los artistas coexistentes, con quienes tal vez coincidiera en el contexto de las exposiciones o – quién sabe – si en la propia Academia de San Alejandro que para entonces se encontraba al doblar la esquina del atelier “El Arte”.

Fuera de un modo u otro, lo cierto es que pueden establecerse determinadas analogías entre sus paisajes de vocación realista y la pintura de Eduardo Morales (1862-1938) o Antonio Rodríguez Morey (1872-1967).

La predilección por las vistas panorámicas, el protagonismo de la naturaleza, la presencia recurrente de las palmas como símbolo por antonomasia de la flora cubana, la factura impecable, la pincelada ágil pero cuidadosa, y el colorido brillante son algunos de los paralelos que insertan al madrileño dentro de la tradición del arte cubano del período. Indudablemente, supo moverse entre los lenguajes al uso y hacer suyo un entorno que por nacimiento no lo era.

Este sentido de pertenencia y de exaltación de lo criollo encontrará un canal privilegiado en el tratamiento de la naturaleza muerta. En el contexto de la plástica cubana será Juan Gil García quien modele y sistematice el comportamiento de un género cuyos precedentes en el país tenían un carácter puntual. Aunque en la historia de la pintura europea la representación de objetos inanimados contaba con una extensa práctica y su correspondiente discusión teórica10, en el caso de Cuba, con anterioridad a las primeras décadas del XX, sólo encontramos antecedentes aislados en esa dirección.

Mientras su conceptualización teórica se produjo en los siglos XVII y XVIII, los orígenes de la naturaleza muerta en cuanto práctica podrían remontarse al mundo griego, donde los pintores comenzaron a aplicar con toda consecuencia los efectos ilusionistas a la representación de los objetos cotidianos. Caso sui generis resulta un bodegón firmado por R. C. Bear (Ramón C. Bear), con fecha de 1879. Sobre la vida y carrera de este pintor poco sabemos más allá de su ingreso al claustro de San Alejandro como profesor de Dibujo Elemental durante la dirección de Francisco Cisneros11 y de su habilidad en el manejo del pincel.

Este segundo aspecto evidente a través de su obra Viandas, bodegón naturalista donde elogia la exuberancia y variedad de los productos del país.

Luego de la obra de Bear será necesario esperar unas décadas para identificar nuevos tanteos en cuanto al particular. Hacia el último decenio del XIX, Armando Menocal (1863-1942) y Adriana Billini (1865-1946) son algunos de los artistas que, desde el abordaje de diferentes temas como el retrato o la pintura de género, propician una cobertura para la aparición de la naturaleza muerta. No obstante, es en realidad Gil García, cuya producción será más tarde atacada y condenada al ostracismo como epígono de un academicismo obsoleto, quien tipifica una vertiente que luego deberá esperar hasta finales de la década del treinta para experimentar nuevas transformaciones en la poética de Amelia Peláez.

En los años que sucedieron a la creación de la República se percibe en la población cubana común un fervoroso sentimiento patriótico. El cese de la guerra y el sentido de libertad que generaba el saberse independientes de la centenaria Metrópolis, crearon una favorable conjunción de circunstancias en medio de las cuales «aparece Gil García volcando (…) su cornucopia frutal»12. No hubo comedor habanero que se resistiera a incluir uno de sus cuadros, devenidos expresión de lo criollo, decoración por excelencia a lo largo y ancho de la geografía insular.

Esta asombrosa popularidad fue también comentada por el periodista Octavio de la Suareé, quien sin contarse propiamente entre sus admiradores hubo de admitir que «raro era el comedor que no lucía en esta capital – se refiere a La Habana – sus consabidas frutas del trópico en conjuntos muchas veces repetido en el que el coco, la piña, y el mamey ponían sus notas características»13.

Al parecer, Bear ingresó al claustro en 1863 y se mantuvo como profesor durante todo el mandato de Cisneros, llegando incluso a ser nombrado Director Interino a la muerte de Cisneros en 1878. Si bien pudieran encontrarse analogías y diferencias entre los bodegones de Gil García y la tradición precedente – en lo que respecta a la composición del cuadro, al manejo de la luz y los colores, entre otros elementos de la técnica pictórica – la nota de mayor singularidad deriva de la selección de los motivos: las frutas tropicales. La variedad y hermosura de los frutos que recrea, unas veces en conjuntos combinados y otros de manera exclusiva, se convierte en última instancia en metáfora de la fertilidad de las tierras cubanas, en sublimación de las ideas de opulencia y progreso a las que la joven nación aspiraba. Quizás sin proponérselo, la obra de Gil García se convertiría en la puesta en escena ideal para la canalización de un patriotismo que Rigol cataloga de «candoroso», pero que indefectiblemente fue creando las bases para cuestionamientos de otro cariz.

En la mayoría de los casos, sus naturalezas muertas con frutas responden a un esquema común, caracterizado por la distribución apaisada del cuadro, la colocación de las frutas en el suelo o dispersas en torno a una cesta a partir de conjuntos aparentemente casuales, y el contraste entre el primer plano iluminado y el fondo neutro trabajado con tonalidades oscuras. Mientras las obras de la primera década del XX comparten en algunos aspectos la sobriedad del estilo de Zurbarán o de Harnett14, Gil abandona pronto este realismo hermético en virtud de una mayor voluptuosidad de lo representado. En su producción más conocida, la fruta entera o en tajadas se exhibe al espectador; pone a la vista tanto su corteza como la pulpa interior – brillante, apetitosa – que invita a ser saboreada.

En contraste con su contemporáneo Antonio Sánchez Araujo (1887-1946), cuyas naturalezas muertas de un cuidadoso esteticismo se insertan en ambientes interiores, el madrileño prefiere el espacio exterior. Mientras las refinadas composiciones de Araujo se acercan a los predios del simbolismo, García parece estar más interesado en describir el exotismo de lo natural. En consecuencia, sustrae gradualmente todo accesorio e incrementa el catálogo de frutas a presentar; hace de cada composición un espectáculo singular a partir del juego de colores, formas y texturas que comparten espacio en el lienzo15.

William Harnett (1848-1892), pintor irlandés de nacimiento, renovó la pintura de bodegones norteamericana de finales del siglo XIX. Aunque no hay certeza de que Gil García haya conocido su obra, considerando que Harnett se convirtió en el pintor de naturalezas muertas más famoso de su época, es probable que constituyera un modelo potencial, ya fuera directamente o a través de la pintura de sus contemporáneos (John Haberle y John F. Los bodegones con frutas alternan frecuentemente con las composiciones florales, igualmente de finalidad decorativa16. En estas obras, al parecer correspondientes a espacios interiores indefinidos, predominan las rosas y los crisantemos – o la combinación de ambos – como las variedades preferidas. El dibujo cuidadoso y el dramatismo de la luz se mantienen constantes, pero la incorporación de nuevos motivos favorece exploraciones de otra índole. Gil repara tanto en el ramillete de flores como en la vasija que las porta; así, estos cuadros se convierten a su vez en un muestrario de la diversidad y el lujo de tales recipientes, cuyos detalles, texturas y transparencias el pintor recrea.

En el horizonte cultural de inicios del siglo XX, el éxito comercial de las obras de Gil García no se hizo esperar. Conocedor de la técnica del trampantojo – o trompe l'oeil, en su versión francesa – logró conquistar la sensibilidad del público a través de un ilusionismo que, construido desde referentes provenientes de su entorno, involucraba distintos niveles de sensibilidad en cuanto a los intereses, necesidades, escalas de valores y preferencias de la creciente clase media cubana.

Según afirma el propio Rigol, la demanda de sus cuadros corrió a la par de su fertilidad. En los años que median entre 1907 y finales de la década de 1920, aproximadamente, su productividad alcanzó niveles asombrosos.

Una agilidad natural para el dibujo – y quizás la presencia de algún que otro ayudante – le permitían pintar prácticamente un cuadro diario para satisfacer las apetencias de una clientela inagotable. La sistematicidad de las ventas y el deseo de alcanzar a los menos adinerados lo llevan a enrolarse en una experiencia novedosa y arriesgada para la época: la tirada litográfica de 50,000 ejemplares realizada a partir de cuatro de sus cuadros; edición sorprendentemente vendida en su totalidad.

Sobre el modo en que pintaba y sobre su vida en general no han faltado las anécdotas y, a veces, los mitos. Cuentan que se dirigía cada mañana al mercado a comprar las frutas que iba a pintar ese día, que solía colocar el caballete frente al público y trabajar con destreza, y que en más de una ocasión algún cliente aguardaba a que terminara su encargo. Algunos dicen que su salud se deterioró a causa de una enfermedad nerviosa y que incluso el dueño de “El Arte” lo alojó durante un tiempo en su finca, situada en las cercanías de Bejucal. Otros, que fue producto del alcohol. Posiblemente hayan sido ambos. Lo cierto es que Juan Gil García muere en mayo de 193217, cuando se encontraba en plena efervescencia de su carrera y sin poder disfrutar de todos los beneficios de la fama.

Con él pareció morir el fenómeno que había protagonizado. La vanguardia emergente atacó con furia su estilo y el desconocimiento del verdadero Gil García se convirtió en un hecho alarmante. A tal punto que, al incluir la semblanza del artista en su Diccionario de Artistas Plásticos de Cuba, ni siquiera Rodríguez Morey logra recordar la fecha de su desaparición física18.

Si debido al volumen de sus trabajos es posible encontrar ciertas desigualdades en términos de calidad, en sentido general su obra se caracterizó por el cuidado del oficio y la depuración técnica. Pero el arte moderno marchaba tras nuevos derroteros y fue a través de ellos que juzgó su poética y se propuso, desesperadamente, superarla. Acaso esta pasión no les permitió ver que la pintura de aquel madrileño, que llegó a La Habana justo cuando el siglo y la República estaban a punto de nacer, había cumplido la misión de su destino: en cuanto al arte, insertar de forma sistemática el tema de la naturaleza muerta en la tradición cubana; en cuanto al público: estimular el gusto por los cuadros de asuntos cubanos.

Aunque en el contexto de la Florida el artista ha disfrutado de una mayor visibilidad a través de algunas exposiciones y, especialmente, debido a la comercialización de sus pinturas, ir tras la huella de este olvidado sigue siendo un reto. Desde una perspectiva que priorice la inclusión, Juan Gil García debe ser rescatado no solamente como figura individual, sino como parte de la historia del arte a la que corresponde. Estas sucesivas búsquedas podrían continuar develando matices de quien posiblemente fuera el pintor más popular de las primeras décadas republicanas.

Síntetis Biográfica 1879 Nace Juan Gil García en Madrid, España. Hijo de Juan Gil y Rubia y Natividad García.

1894 Se recibe como bachiller por el Colegio Hispanoamericano del barrio de Argüelles, incorporado al

instituto del Cardenal Cisneros. Ingresa a la Universidad Central con la intención de estudiar Derecho.

En el marco de estos años, cursa sus primeras clases de dibujo la Escuela de Artes y Oficios de Madrid.

1897 A los 18 años, tras morir su madre, abandona los estudios académicos para dedicarse por completo

a la pintura.

1897- Viaja a París para complementar sus estudios. Se instala brevemente en Valladolid, España, donde recibe 1899 clases en la Escuela de Bellas Artes de la ciudad. Regresa a Madrid.

1899 Llega a La Habana. Se casa unos años después con Dolores Delgado Hernández, nativa de la ciudad,

matrimonio del cuan nacieron dos hijos: Juan Mateo y Natividad.

1900s Uno de sus primeros desempeños en el país fue el de profesor de dibujo en el Centro Asturiano.

1916 Participa en el Salón de Bellas Artes de este año y en el 1917, en La Habana, Cuba.

1917 La Revista Bohemia dedica siete páginas completas a reproducir varias de sus obras: Cocos, Anones,

Mangos, Zapotes, Naranjas, Plátanos y Mameyes.

1920s

Es contratado por la dirección del atelier “El Arte”, sin que podamos precisar la fecha de este suceso.

Al parecer trabajo para “El Arte” por más de diez años y estuvo vinculado a esta institución hasta su muerte, por lo que a juzgar por las fechas este vínculo debió iniciarse posiblemente a inicios de la década de 1920. Es la década de mayor productividad. La comercialización de su obra alcanza niveles asombrosos, llegando a ser conocido en los lugares más apartados de la Isla. Posiblemente auspiciado por “El Arte”, en este decenio se realiza una numerosa tirada litográfica de cuatro de sus obras (dos paisajes y dos composiciones con frutas cubanas).

Todos los ejemplares fueron vendidos.

1932 Muere en la Habana el día 4 de mayo.

1933 El Diario de La Marina le rinde un homenaje

póstumo en el primer aniversario de su muerte.

1971

El Museo de Arte Colonial (La Habana, Cuba) realiza la primera exposición personal del artista bajo el nombre: Primer Cuarto del Siglo XX. Ambiente de una época.

1990

Se incrementa el éxito de su obra en la Florida a partir de la llegada de varios lotes de pinturas provenientes de Cuba, así como de la gestiones de varios de sus coleccionistas. En especial, el Museo de Artes y Ciencias de Daytona Beach (FL), institución que atesora algunos de sus trabajos, ha propiciado la exhibición de estas piezas en diferentes ciudades a través del Estado.
