How do you know he is…the one? You may have been asked this question by your parents, your friends, even yourself. The answer isn’t always perfectly clear; he may or may not be ‘ideal’ on paper; you may have known him for only two months or perhaps you’ve been hanging in there a good five years; he may be a cowboy while you were visualizing a business man. The so-called ‘signs’ aren’t always there, but somehow…you just know. At Ceremony, we feel the same way about our Great List of vendors that we recommend. We take this vendor collective very seriously, which is why we don’t put arbitrary consideration requirements in an antiquated form. We don’t have a scholastic checklist to help us come up with an ‘A’ grade. We don’t even have a job application type form to fill out. You see, when it comes to choosing our Great List of recommended vendors, we believe there is no specific formula for choosing who we invite to join our family. Probably not unlike you, we take a looksie at Facebook, we inquire with their friends and colleagues and, most importantly, we get to know them by social networking the old-fashioned way (in person). In the end, we go with our gut. We just…know. You will find that some of these recommended vendors have refined their businesses over the past twenty years, while others bring fresh ideas after having recently started their own businesses. Many of our recommended venues are on the AAA Five-Diamond Resort list; others include charming private estates and everything in between. What are your favorite styles and fabrics? NM: Jacquard and metal fabrics continue as a perennial interpretation of bridal dresses in Nicole Miller’s collection. Her latest creations include vintage lace, which is a favorite of our brides and staff. WF: The softer, almost muted palates…peaches, blush, grays, beige and nudes. PB: Silk taffetas, crepes and organza are my favorite textiles to work with. An elegant bias with a hand beaded vintage lace, or an elegant low “v” back and a simple cap sleeve is truly an enchanting style. However, by 2013 soft flowing ball gowns will make a comeback. What do you suggest when a bride wants to incorporate her ethnic heritage into her look but still wants the big white dress? WF: We love and encourage a bride to incorporate her heritage, family background, pretty much anything that will tie in their life and roots. It is so important during this special time to feel that you are building a connection and a foundation for your future while “marrying” it with your past. The best thing we can do is be supportive and use all of our experience and knowledge in this industry so our bride feels comfortable enough to make decisions whether its having an alternate dress, incorporating accessories or traditional bridal wear that reflects their background. LB: Demographically our boutiques serve ethnically diverse brides regularly; we believe that incorporating the ethnic heritage is an integral part of successfully completing the search for the perfect gown. Lovella Wedding Specialists aspire to learn every intricate detail of ethnic traditions and the profound meaning it conveys to blend chic, contemporary gowns of today into a timeless yet traditional personal expression on the most important day of her life. NM: We recommend accessories like a sash, floral hairpiece, or suggest wearing a treasured piece of heirloom jewelry. Brides can also use colors as a component of their look to reflect ethnic heritage. What 2012 designer collection impressed you the most? WF: I think it’s fun to take bridal to another level and bring in some soft color. I love blush so when I saw a gown being done in this color I was so excited! It was also refreshing to see some shorter styles out there. I was very impressed by Alvina Valenta’s collection. It was the perfect blend of femininity with a hint of flirty playfulness. I loved that she incorporated little textured caplets and tulle, keeping it whimsical but realistic. LB: Fashion is ART. Style is an expression. At Lovella we’re very impressed with dramatic, simple, sophisticated elegance, detailed yet delicate but bold embellishments that make a statement. Some of our favorites are: Ines Di Santo, Lazaro, Edgardo Bonilla, Alvina Valenta and Pronovias. PB: As a designer myself, I never look to what other designers are doing, as I concentrate on my own collection. However, I do pay attention to the Inesclose Di Santo, at Lovella Bridal textiles as this is my specialty.

NM: Many brides are now selecting a color or palette and allowing their bridesmaids to choose a style that flatters them individually. At Nicole Miller, we can fit bridesmaids in styles that flatter their different personalities and body types, yet still maintain a cohesive look. A Nicole Miller bridesmaid is always simple and chic. PB: Bridesmaid dresses do make a big impact and my advice for brides is to keep it simple and elegant: short to knee length dresses for morning and noon weddings and long, elegant gowns for evening events are best. The textiles on the bridesmaids’ dresses can change the course of the look so be careful not only to choose a style or cut, but pay attention to the textile. LB: When selecting bridesmaids dresses be mindful and sensitive to various body types and styles. It is more important to choose styles that best flatter the overall fit and look of the maids vs. dresses that look good in magazines or on hangers but may not be the best suitable choice for your maids. WF: Determine whether you want dresses similar or if you want them to be completely different. This will help narrow your choices with fabrics and silhouettes. Then onto your next step…color! church beams. The couple culled inspiration from their adventures. They decided to use old doors, windows, lumber and commissioned an artist to replicate a tile mural they saw in Portugal. Drawn to the sprawling nature of European villages, they scattered the Ranch with charming bungalows. And they brought animals. Jeannie had stayed at a sanctuary for Bengal tigers and was drawn to the creatures. When the Lawrences discovered one of their employees had a license to exhibit foreign animals, they ushered their Ranch into a new phase: zoological garden. Countless brides have fallen under the charms of Rancho Las Lomas, raving about the interconnected terracotta walkways and roses lining the stone pathways. Current brides have even more to be excited about. “We are opening the Ranch in ways we haven’t before,” Jeannie says. “We are opening smaller bungalows and outdoor spaces for brides who want a more intimate wedding.” Brides can now capitalize on a backyard family estate feeling. They can choose from a ceremony held under ﬂowering apple trees or nuptials by a Spanish style bungalow. Whatever they select, one thing is certain, their guests will be transported. Not to a speciﬁc place since Rancho Las Lomas is a patchwork of times and places, but to a magical land built on a deep love of family and adventure.

The key threads of Jeannie Lawrence’s life – love for family, love for travel, and love for animals – are all carefully woven together at Rancho Las Lomas, Jeannie’s sprawling 23-acre facility in South Orange County. Nestled in the hills of Silverado, the Ranch offers brides a unique side of the OC, away from the expected seaside wedding venues. Perhaps most intriguing is the host of animals on the Ranch. Wedding guests can observe zebras, tigers, and even alpacas, all on exhibit throughout the estate. While the Ranch is expansive and exciting, it still has a sense of a family home – because that is exactly what it is. “My late husband, Rick, and I wanted to create a place for family and friends,” Lawrence says. 25 years ago, Rick and Jeannie discovered the nameless plot of land. Peppered with orange trees and undeveloped, it was a blank canvas for the Lawrences. While it now has a distinctly Spanish ﬂair, it is a composite of the couple’s personal memories. “We created the Ranch based off of our favorite places,” Jeannie says. And not just favorite places, though the architecture is reﬂective of Spain, Portugal, and Italy but favorite images – sprinkled hillsides, colorful tile

What is your favorite wedding menu? How do you assist a couple in creating their menu? One of the best things to ask is, “When you both go out to dinner, where do you love to go?” Italian, Greek? What is the setting? Rustic, formal? We can create a spectacular menu around what they love to eat and incorporate their style. What trend do you get asked for the most? Family style meals. Although not all foods are suitable to be passed around the table, dishes that must be kept very hot can be difﬁcult. However, family style menus involve the whole table; everyone is engaged and excited to see different platters being shared and it stimulates great conversation. Favorite ingredient to add to a cocktail? Champagne. There is something magical about the bubbles. Also, fresh fragrant herbs like lavender, basil, and mint. What is your favorite wedding menu? Food stations - like a martini-mashed potato station with both Yukon and sweet mash, choose your own toppings like pancetta, sautéed mushrooms, edamame, candied nuts, crème fraiche, chives, and even trufﬂes. Another fun option is a PHO station, a classic Vietnamese dish, which makes quite an experience for your guests. How many dishes does a couple get to sample at a tasting? We hold both private and group tastings. Most brides LOVE the party atmosphere of a group tasting. Signature cocktails and tray passed appetizers are served. Guests are then invited into the dining room where they enjoy a buffet with over 20 items.

What kinds of surprising twists can you do on traditional wedding menu? Intermezzo sorbet courses, especially on a hot summer day, with a creative flavor like blackberry cabernet. Also artisan breads such as cranberry orange and walnut; rosemary and sage; or pretzel with flavored butters to accompany the meal. Favorite ingredient to add to a cocktail? Crushed jalapeno, spicy but not overpowering; it gives just a little kick. What is a large crowd-pleasing wedding day menu? What is the most peculiar dish you’ve served at a wedding? Lechon (pronounced lay-choan), whole roasted pig, is a traditional menu item within the Filipino culture and typically served whole on a buffet with a crispy skin and tender meat on the inside.

What do you do when a groom and bride (literally) have different tastes as well as distinctively different cultural backgrounds? We do a fusion menu! It is actually a lot of fun because it allows us to create some pretty spectacular combinations with multiple interactive stations highlighting both the bride and groom’s individual requests, or a seated dinner blending tastes and/or cultures together on one plate.

What trend do you get asked for the most? Signature cocktails. This is a great way to personalize the reception with the couple’s favorite cocktail, colors or reminisce about the lovebirds’ history. How many dishes does a couple get to sample at a tasting? A menu tasting includes 4-6 hors d’oeuvres, 2 salads, 4 entrees and 4 side dishes. If they move into a cake tasting, a couple would sample 10 different cake flavors, 10 filling flavors and 4 icing flavors. They are encouraged to mix, match and create whatever flavor combination they’d like. It’s fun and playful, which puts the icing on the cake!

What trend do you get asked for the most? “Farm to table” style menu selections. We fully support this movement and love working with the local farmers to purchase fresh, organic produce and proteins. What is your favorite wedding menu? Gourmet burgers and fresh-cut French fries! Guests get so excited when they see something other than chicken, mashed potatoes and a vegetable medley. To ﬁnish it off, try a trio of mini milkshakes. Favorite ingredient to add to a cocktail? Whipped cream vodka – it’s a great way to have a creamy taste, without having to use the heavy, calorie-ridden cream to beverages. Try our creamy orangesicle martini!

Do you have any unique presentation options for serving food at a wedding? Think Chinese to-go box for tray-passed or stationary items. Use a cone for a light mixed salad or ﬂavored fries. A lollipop stick isn’t just for cake pops anymore as you can pop them into a meatball or shumai and instantly have an exciting food. What is a large crowd-pleasing wedding day menu? By far, our recipe for provolone potatoes are always a hit and the guests’ favorite.

Everyone knows about the standard “Our Wedding” photo album. He suggests reviewing a videographers work prior to booking and getting a sense for their ability. Need Some NRG? NRG (yes, it is a play on the word ‘energy’) isn’t one of those entertainment groups that come around often. They are chameleonlike, performing every musical genre from the twenties to Lady Gaga. Their repertoire is endless. If you want Broadway show tunes, no problem. Love Frank Sinatra? They’ll fly you to the moon. Looking at NRG now, with their stunning costumes, flawless musical execution, and instant charisma, it’s hard to believe the entire company grew out of one duo. “It was my wife and I,” says Andy Salmonsen. “We were playing gigs and we just blossomed from there. We added three girls then some more musicians and before you knew it, we had the ability to perform a thirty-five person orchestra.” Besides just growing in numbers, NRG stayed on the cutting-edge of the music industry by adapting to each style. “Our strength is really in our diversity,” Salmonsen says. “We have a wide array of performers. Each of them have different strengths and they bring that to NRG.” It’s true, a notion confirmed by one look at their lineup. They have a Puerto Rican drummer who brings the sensual pulse of Latin music for brides wanting a tango. There’s the former Miss Mississippi who can sing ‘Il Bambino’ like it’s closing night at the New York opera. Rounding out the band even more is their horn player, a musician who cut his melodic chops with Ray Charles. Beyond their impressive resumes, NRG is mostly known for its chemistry. Years of playing together and their close-knit community makes for some dynamic performances. “We really are a family,” Salmonsen explains. “And that translates. We appreciate each other and we appreciate each and every family we play for. When we’re singing ‘Butterfly Kisses’ and we see a dad dancing with his little girl who just got married, we have to hold it in. Because we are right there in the moment with you.” And that’s what makes NRG meaningful. They don’t go on and on about their celebrity clientele or brag about the big-name gigs they’ve played. They focus on the heartfelt moments and their gratitude at being able to facilitate them. “Those are the times that stay with us,” Salmonsen says. “That’s why we do this.”

She also encourages brides to see the car prior to the wedding day to ascertain its condition and to work with a company that promises arrival times. “Being late is the number one complaint against limo companies,” Walters says. “Choose a company with an on time guarantee that will email you in advance.” For stylish brides who have a penchant for nostalgia, the vintage car is the way to go.

It all started as a childhood crush in Croatia. Michelle, who spent her summers abroad with her family, was dared to slow dance with a boy named Gordon.

Clearly that

was just the start as this youthful friendship progressed into a transoceanic romance. Michelle and Gordon kept their love alive by writing good old-fashioned love letters and scheduling new-age skype sessions. Then, before she knew it, Michelle retells adoringly, “He was on his way to America to marry me.”

Love at ﬁrst sight set Ashwin and Kareena together forever. Being a traditional gentleman, Ashwin asked her father for his blessing before making a grand proposal. Steve, a fireman, knew the sparks were about to fly when Jennifer showed up for their blind date with his favorite six-pack of Oktoberfest beer in tow. LOVE STORY

Brian knew he wanted his proposal to Kelly to be a surprise. His plan was to lead his lady down the shore to a beautiful spread on the beach with blankets, champagne and of course, the question. It sounded like a great plan so he enlisted the help of his mother, who went ahead of them and laid everything out – making it perfect. In an effort to remain anonymous, Brian’s mother wore a wig… just in case she ran into anyone! With those noble efforts of Kelly’s soon-to-be-motherin-law, this proposal went off without a hitch.

It all started when her best friend met RJ and then called Katie gushing, “I found someone more preppy than you and loves working hard just like you…and he is wearing loafers.” Since Katie knew her BFF was keyed into her needs (and she had been on the lookout for a hardworking, loafer-loving guy), her response was, “I’m on my way!” Three years later, after a romantic San Francisco dinner perfected with champagne and limo service, Katie’s suspicions were heightened as she tried to locate a ring in his pockets. She was convinced it was just a fabulous night until he detoured near the Koit Towers to ask for her hand, pulling the ring from his sock. He knew she was on to him.

Ashley and Anthony, who had been dating since high school, have always had a thing for greeting cards. For holidays, birthdays and just-because-days, they would get each other this simple token of affection. One day Anthony suggested that they make a scrapbook of all their cards. Ashley was a little shocked. Anthony, known to be a “man’s man” wasn’t exactly an arts and crafts type of guy. However she agreed and on her birthday, Anthony surprised her by telling her he finished the scrapbook. Excited, she flipped through it to find a new card added in the back. It read, “Will you marry me?”
