Arpit was born and raised in Mumbai, India. Growing up, he had the opportunity to travel around the country, as well as parts of Southeast Asia, Australia, and the U.S. (where he would eventually relocate to in 1998.) In the eighth grade, when his science class took a field trip to hear from scientists returning from Antarctica, Arpit found himself fascinated by a singular image: the aurora australis. Little did he know that nearly a decade later, he would find a passion for photography and pursue it as a career. In 2008, Arpit started out as an assistant to a local photographer. By the end of the following year, he had already traveled as far as Singapore to capture his second destination wedding. Over the years, he has developed and honed his own unique style own unique style, hyperrealism, a visual aesthetic where the images produced are a blend between photorealistic paintings and editorial photography. How do you know…he’s the one? You may have been asked this question by your parents, your friends, even yourself. The answer isn’t always perfectly clear; he may or may not be ‘ideal’ on paper; you may have known him for only two months or perhaps you’ve been hanging in there a good five years; he may be a cowboy while you were visualizing a business man. The so-called ‘signs’ aren’t always there, but somehow, you just know. At Ceremony, we feel the same way about our Great List of wedding professionals that we recommend and invite to join our family of advertising partners. We take this vendor collective very seriously, which is why we don’t put arbitrary consideration requirements in an antiquated form. We don’t have a scholastic checklist to help us come up with an ‘A’ grade. We don’t even have a job application type form to fill out. You see, when it comes to choosing our Great List of recommended professionals, we believe there is no specific formula for choosing who we invite to join our family. Probably not unlike you, we take a look-see at Facebook, we inquire with their friends and colleagues and, most importantly, we get to know them by social networking the old-fashioned way (in person). In the end, we go with our gut. We just…know. You will find that some of these recommended vendors have refined their businesses over the past twenty years, while others bring fresh ideas after having recently started their own businesses. Many of our recommended venues are on the AAA Five-Diamond Resort list; others include charming private estates and everything in between. Additionally, the esteemed planners on the following pages each approach weddings in their own unique way, and we have interviewed each of them in order to give you an up close and personal look at their backgrounds, their ideas, and their wedding ingenuity. We hope that you will find this varied Great List vendor collective to be helpful in finding your wedding day professionals. Your company has seen impressive growth the past few years, especially in venues! What is the secret sauce to creating and building such an acclaimed catering company and what do you foresee in the next few years? Our vision statement is “To Create and Inspire.” Whether it’s inspiring our clients, our peers, or even (especially!) our own team, we know that success comes with keeping the big picture in mind and making sure that each choice we make propels us towards that goal. The other significant element of our growth is an open heart. Norm, the owner of 24 Carrots, has always been open to making space at 24 Carrots for the right fit – including our amazing staff and team, and notably, our venues. That in turn continues to allow us to create and inspire. It’s an exhilarating cycle that keeps us going.
Whether it’s a simple adjustment or having a completely vegan menu, specialty meals are a part of our standard service to ensure that you’re celebrating to your fullest party-potential!
Eight years ago, you fashioned a “milk and donuts” themed table for a Ceremony Magazine photo shoot. It was a first look at what has since become a donut phenomenon at weddings and events everywhere. What themes are you styling now that might have the same staying power? We’re in a season where styling and aesthetics are a huge part of the guest experience, and also a time where food is more interactive than ever. Interaction sometimes means chef-interactive, where guests get a sneak peek into the behind-the-scenes production. Sometimes interaction is the form of a display like our brunch wall, where we built out a backdrop with shelves for guests to “grab and go” mini brunch bites. Regardless of what the next food phenomenon is, you can definitely bet it’ll be something that guests are excited to talk about, snap, and share!
What are today’s most underrated dishes or ingredients? Vegetables! And great side dishes in general. We have become such a protein-centric community, and while we’re big fans of our classic filet, we also know that some of our client favorites are the side dishes. Full of flavor and personality, don’t overlook the vegetables on your dish.
What is the best approach to serving food for specialty diets? Depending on what restrictions your guests may have, most caterers are able to easily adjust menu items, or may have a dedicated menu for specialty diets. Regardless of the severity of the allergy or dietary preference, the most important part is communicating that information to your caterer. Who has the allergy, where they are sitting, and it is also essential to distinguish whether a guest has an allergy, or a preference (i.e. gluten), so we may prepare accordingly.
What are some unique rehearsal dinner ideas? We always encourage our couples to integrate their style and personality into their whole wedding, including the menu and bar! The rehearsal dinner is the perfect opportunity to showcase your relationship – whether it’s a cocktail party at the local brewery where you met, or having your caterer create a fusion menu of your two cultures. We like to view rehearsal dinners as another opportunity to integrate some of your wedding wish list ideas that didn’t make the cut for the big day, but still worth celebrating.
What’s the next big thing in wedding catering? We’ve seen a demand for restaurant-style menus. Instead of picking a standard wedding buffet, our clients have been asking for chef-selected dishes with items that already pair well together. Brides and grooms have been more open-minded in allowing the chef to suggest what will taste best and be the best culinary experience. Needless to say, we’re big fans of this trend! Do you have any at-home cooking tips for newlyweds? If you’re new to cooking in general, start with your favorite foods. You’ll know what flavors you’ll want to achieve and you’ll be familiar with the profile, so it’s a good place to work towards. If you’re new to cooking together, be sure to give each other tasks, extra room, and a lot of grace! Just like life and marriage, you’re both cooking towards the same goal, but you may just get there differently.

What’s your favorite part about both being the caterer and the venue operator? We love so many aspects of being both the caterer and the venue operator, however our favorite part is how seamless we are able to make the wedding day for our couples. It allows us to focus on our clients, as opposed to focusing on the unknown logistics of a wedding day. Congratulations on your 50th anniversary! Please share more about this amazing milestone! Thank you! This is a very exciting year for us as we share the celebration of 50 years with our staff, our clients, and our family. Jay and Eleanor Mastroianni founded Jay’s Catering with the idea that catering should be available to everyone, not just the wealthy. From our humble beginnings as a one-stop-shop for catering truck companies, to our current status as one of Southern California’s largest caterers, our goals and values have remained the same. Our delicate mix of tradition and innovation has allowed us to withstand the test of time, and we are proud to celebrate this monumental achievement. What are some unique rehearsal dinner ideas? This may not be the most unique idea, but serving dinner (or lunch) family style is definitely fitting for a rehearsal day. It is a prefect way for the two families to get to know each other over a great meal! What are today’s most overrated food trends? Anything that aims to change the molecular composition of the food, with no impact on the taste. We are fairly traditional in this way, the taste of our food is very high in our book!
What are today’s most underrated dishes or ingredients? One of the most underrated ingredients is vinegar. A little touch of acid can make a huge difference in a dish. You will find white, red wine, balsamic, apple cider, and pretty much every other type of vinegar in our pantry. What’s the next big thing in wedding catering? Couples want their catering to represent them. We have seen this trend in the last few years, but it is stronger than ever. We first saw this with fusion menus, but now we are seeing it throughout the entire event. Couples are specifically requesting for their favorite foods to be the focal point of the day, even if it is an unconventional mash up! For example, one of our couples had a mac & cheese station, a taco station, and a custom Thai curry station for their reception. What is a meal or dish you’ve never served but would love a shot at? Over the course of 50 years we have been able to try almost everything. However, we have never been able to learn and master the art of traditional seven-course Vietnamese dining. This is definitely on our list! If you were to serve the last meal on earth, what would it be? We would have to go with Eleanor’s original lasagna, which has been on the menu for 50 years. Who is the person you would most want to join you at dinner? This is simple, we would love to sit down to dinner with our founder, Jay Mastroianni. Having the opportunity to celebrate 50 years of success with him would be priceless.

La Venta Inn is an historic estate perched on a hillside with expansive Pacific Ocean and Los Angeles city views. Verandas Beach House is a contemporary two story venue with a private garden complete with a lush koi pond and an elegant yet comfortable beach vibe. How did NYFC get started with La Venta Inn and Verandas Beach House? New York Food Company was known in the Los Angeles beach cities for producing amazing catered events. In 1992, NYFC was invited by La Venta Inn’s owners to become the management team and exclusive caterer for the historic venue. The NYFC team helped restore the estate to its original luster. Verandas Beach House was formerly a popular Manhattan Beach restaurant that had fallen on hard times. New York Food Company saw this as an opportunity to create a distinctive wedding venue steps from the sand. What’s your favorite part about both being the caterer and the venue operator? We like being a one-stop-shop for wedding planning for busy couples. Offering them a fine-tuned, turnkey operation makes their wedding planning so much easier. Our favorite thing to hear is that we made our client’s wedding day a seamless, easy, and delicious experience. What is the best approach to serving food for specialty diets? The best approach is to listen to each client’s needs and cater to each and every special request. We have grown accustomed to creating delicious vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, paleo, and kosher-style custom menus. Creative presentation is also key to elevating any plate. What are some unique rehearsal dinner ideas? We like causal rehearsal dinners that promote mingling among the guests so friends can meet relatives and people traveling from out of town. Interactive food stations like a raw bar with oyster shucking, a
variety of soup shooters for guests to savor and sample, and s’mores dessert bars are fun ways to promote guests intermingling. Rehearsal dinners should also end early and serve light alcohol so everyone is fresh for the next event – the big day! What are today’s most underrated dishes or ingredients? Locally sourced, quality ingredients should always take center stage. Fresh meats, seafood, vegetables, fruits, grains and herbs are the foundation for the perfect meal and presentation. What’s the next big thing in wedding catering? Create your own food stations like pho noodles, crostinis, tater tots, rollyour-own sushi are fun ideas, and then offer various accoutrements and garnishes for them too. Beverage bars will be popular as well: bubble bar, whiskey bar, and build your own cocktail featuring a variety of flavored liqueurs, juices, fresh fruit and herb garnishes. There are limitless possibilities. Smaller scale wedding cakes surrounded by a variety of dessert bites are also trending. Everyone enjoys the ceremonious cake cutting, but with a variety of desserts guests are treated to an array of sweets instead of just a piece of cake. What is a meal or dish you’ve never served but would love a shot at? Osso bucco – it’s delicious but very expensive and it is trickier to plate and make it look appealing. Do you have any at-home cooking tips for newlyweds? Add a couple of really good cook books to your wedding registry. Cooking together is fun. We suggest prepping the ingredients as a team. Then, let one person cook and the other can handle clean up. A celebrity chef you would most want to cook for you and your staff? We are fans of Michael Symon from the Chew! We like his use of bold flavors and new twists on classic dishes. Mustard, tarragon and panko crusted prime rib with roasted vegetables and his baked potato casserole, yes please! Who is the person you would most want to join you at dinner? We’d have loved to have dinner with Julia Child…she was a classic!

Although Bethany and Malachi grew up in the same town in Oregon, have mutual friends and Bethany’s mom even worked for Malachi’s parents at one point, they didn’t truly know each other until both attended Grand Canyon University in Arizona. Malachi’s family now lives in San Diego, so after taking many trips to California together, he knew that a beach proposal would be perfect for the two of them. After location scouting with his brother and friends and coordinating the details, all that remained was to finally propose. As the waves crashed and family and friends hid, Malachi got down on one knee and proposed to Bethany, pulling off the best surprise of her life.

Andrew convinced Laura that he was unable to attend an awards ceremony for his brother and asked Laura to fly to San Francisco in his place. She was bummed he couldn’t be there and kept asking for him to change his schedule, although he was secretly going to be there. Because of her persistence, Andrew bought a second, fake flight just to show her a ticket and pretend he was going to barely make it in time. In actuality, the “awards weekend” was a guise to get her to San Francisco, and Andrew surprised her completely by being there and proposing.
