TIS THE SEASON

Happy Holidays

We have come to the end of 2022. If your year has gone anything like mine, you have been met with some pleasant, as well as a few not so welcome surprises. Like many families across America, the flu made its way to our home along with its distant cousin, COVID. However, through it all, we are still here. CEOMOM Magazine has experienced some growth and is gearing up to emerge in 2023 with some much needed changes. I even got to take a break to figure out the next steps for the brand. I hope that as you get ready to welcome the new year, you are reminded of how far you’ve come. I hope that you celebrate YOU as you pave the way for more good days than challenging ones. Thank you for being a part of the CEOMOM Magazine family. We wouldn’t be where we are without your support

For whatever you celebrate, if anything at all, have a beautiful season!

3 TIPS FOR REDUCING STRESS DURING THE HOLIDAYS

CEOMOM | 6

AN EASY HACK FOR REDUCING STRESS DURING

HOLIDAYS IS TO EXHALE LONGER THAN INHALEYogis have been practicing this for centuries! By extending the length of your exhalation, your body receives a signal that you are safe and your nervous system will begin to calm This can be as easy as a four second inhalation, followed by a six second exhalation, try at least three rounds of this breath.

SUN SALUTATION B-

Named for the sun, this ancient Yogic warmup allows us to invite in warmth and radiance, to feel light from the inside out. There are also some strong postures in this sequence, like Warrior 1, which will help you to call on your inner strength, and yes that includes knowing when to walk away from holiday drama

MAINTAIN HEALTHY BOUNDARIES

There are some folks who like to push your buttons at the holidays Whether it is an unhappy person, a person that is still treating you like a child, or family tension, practice scenarios before you attend holiday gatherings. Words like, “oh,” and then politely stepping away, or if necessary, “I hear you, and that is not my experience, let’s agree to disagree,” show respect for the other person, while keeping you out of the fray I teach my children that they can choose between being right, and being happy. Aim for happy.

TIPS TO MAKE HOLIDAY SHOPPING FUN

The holiday season is synonymous with stress and chaos From trying to complete all of your holiday shopping before family arrives to take over your home, to making sure you cook the best holiday meal, the season is full of never ending to do lists Although chaos is part of the festivities, you can still have family friendly fun. Here are a few tips to help you enjoy this season while juggling a hectic schedule

Stress and anxiety often increase the closer we get to the big celebration The more you can take off your plate early, the more you have time to relax and breathe. Organize your shopping list with the most important people at the top Shop for them first and then pick up stocking stuffers for everyone else on your list.

Shopping for people we love should be enjoyable. Involve the whole family and turn it into a game Maybe do a shopping scavenger hunt. Create a contest to see who can come up with the best gift idea for grandma. Make it more than just about the purchase, but the moments of togetherness and joy

If you’re like me, you appreciate the arrival of a much wanted package. Shop for loved ones online and send them a card or note that says, “Something special is coming in the mail just for you.” Use your own words. You can even add a humorous holiday poem. Remove a few steps from your holiday shopping like going to the mall, parking and wrapping gifts.

Shop online, and ship.
Shop early. Make buying gifts for loved ones fun.

3 TIPS TO FOSTER MINDFUL SELFCOMPASSION

CEOMOM | 12

“Mindful Self Compassion is about treating yourself with love, kindness, and care just as you would your dearest friend or loved one,” Julie says. “Mindfulness enables us to turn toward and acknowledge our difficult thoughts and feelings (such as inadequacy, sadness, anger, or confusion) with a spirit of openness and curiosity. Self-compassion involves responding to these difficult thoughts and feelings with kindness, sympathy, and understanding so that we soothe and comfort ourselves when we’re hurting.”

“Commit to treating yourself like your very best friend. Shower yourself with compassion and understanding.”

o t i k e

HERE ARE THREE OF JULIE’S SELFCARE TIPS GROUNDED IN MINDFUL SELF-COMPASSION:

Treat yourself like you would your dearest friend:

When a friend we love is going through a tough time or not feeling their best, we go out of our way to lift their spirits, encourage them, and let them know they are loved Commit to treating yourself like your very best friend. Shower yourself with compassion and understanding

Comfort yourself with soothing touch:

Placing your hand over your heart or wherever you find it most comforting (i e , your shoulder, your cheek) taps into your body’s mammalian caregiver response to release oxytocin and opiates in your brain to counteract cortisol, the stress hormone

Take time away from the 24 hour news cycle:

Give yourself permission to step away, turn off the TV, and steer clear of political social media streams when you need a break. Take this time to do something positive and impactful instead something that makes you feel good and helps others. Volunteer in your community. Donate to a charity for a cause you’re passionate about.

“I put my hand on my heart probably 20 times a day,” Julie says “Whenever I hear an upsetting story, up goes my hand to my heart. Some of my mindfulness students find that placing a hand on their belly or cheek worked better for them Try different spots out on yourself and see what works for you.”

Soothing touch is the “S” in SNAP, the mindful self care method Julie developed and the title of her upcoming book “SNAP! From Chaos to Calm.” Psychologist Rick Hanson, senior fellow at UC Berkeley's Greater Good Science Center and New York Times bestselling author, says: “The SNAP method is brilliant. In one simple practice, Julie Potiker integrates brain science, mindfulness, compassion, and other effective tools for lifting your mood, easing anxiety, calming stress, and opening your heart.”

5 EASY STEPS TO SET UP A MEDITATION SPACE AT HOME

CEOMOM | 20

Meditation is an essential part of finding a harmonious way to live with yourself and those around you. For many, it can often be hard to find the proper location to meditate, often finding their rooms and common living places too distracting or busy to foster new mental habits.

A d o r a W i n q u i s t

As a solution, Adora Winquist, author of the alternative medicine book “Detox, Nourish, Activate: Plant and Vibrational Medicine for Energy, Mood, and Love, meditation expert, modern alchemist, healer and expert in the field of aromatherapy, has come up with five easy ways to create the ideal meditation space in your home.

CEOMOM | 21

Organize the Room 1

Decluttering your environment is one of the simplest methods to give yourself a sense of space and a fresh start. Too many objects can frequently produce too much stimuli for effective meditation. Each item also carries a memory and a certain energy. Too many conflicting memories, emotions, or energies can frequently make it difficult to reach a suitable meditational state. The best way to give yourself the best chance at success is to organize and remove miscellaneous objects. This allows you to visualize not only your effort, but also your new way of thinking

Integrate Nature

The presence of nature can be a multifaceted blessing while meditating. When we surround ourselves with nature’s conduits, such as plants, and enter our meditative state, our body’s rhythm synchronizes with the natural frequencies around us. This connection can deepen our meditative state, but also heighten our physical senses, such as touch and smell. Opening yourself to nature serves to expand your mindfulness You can often find yourself being drawn into the larger world around you, envisioning your place in a world with such bountiful energy. I would recommend that you grab a few plants, maybe open a window, and imagine yourself in the tender caress of nature’s energy, letting all your negative energies flow towards the great expanse, and in turn accepting the love provided by the world around you.

2
CEOMOM | 22
FOLLOWING THESE SIMPLE STEPS WILL HELP YOU BRING YOUR MEDITATION TO THE NEXT LEVEL:

Set the Atmosphere

When you are at ease, it is often easiest to meditate. With this in mind, I want you to reflect on what brings you a sense of contentment, safety, and calmness An example for some would include a darkened room, surrounded by warm candles, and soothing music in the background Once you have found the right atmosphere, finding your meditative state is made much easier.

Cradle your Senses

Many people find that smell is the sense that helps them meditate effectively I have found that smells produced by essential oils or scented candles can soothe and even heighten your meditative experience. If you have essential oils, I would recommend lightly rubbing some on the inside of your wrists as well as your neck so that with every inhalation you take in more of the soothing energy provided by your chosen aroma. If you do not have any essential oils and are interested in purchasing some, I would welcome you to take a look at my website and discover which essential oil fits your purposes the best.

Create Intention

Once you have created your meditative space, it is important to emphasize what this new space will be used for. As you look around and absorb the peaceful energies of your safe place, imagine what you want to achieve when you are in this room. Set an intention such as “I am grateful for the space that I have created for myself”, and feel as the frequency in the room elevates to meet your goal. Now, whenever you walk into this room, you will feel the power and connection that it shares with your soul and your purpose.

FIVE THINGS EVERY FEMALE ENTREPRENEUR SHOULD KNOW

CEOMOM | 24

WONDERIN GROUP CO-FOUNDERS, ANDREA URIOSTE AND CHARLOTTE WHITE SHARE THEIR TIPS FOR SUCCESS

So you’ve decided to become an entrepreneur. You’re in good company! According to the National Association of Women Business Owners, “more than 11.6 million firms are owned by women, employing nearly 9 million people ” (NAWBO) However, women in business still face more hurdles than their male counterparts

Andrea Urioste and Charlotte White, Co Founders of Long Island based Wonder Integrated Group (notable clients: Planned Parenthood, The Aspen Institute and the U.S. Open, to name a few), started their successful marketing communications firm over six years ago due to a need to break through an existing male domineered advertising industry. They learned a few things along the way and are sharing their insight so you, too, can succeed:

1. Believe In Yourself

First, believe in yourself, because then there will be little that will matter of what anyone else says or does. You should always be your biggest cheerleader. It’s also okay not to get it right the first time, and fail again before you get it right it’s through these failures that you will gain experience and resilience that you will need to succeed in business.

It’s not just building profitable businesses. Getting to know your clients and partners on a personal level (whether it’s a birthday or the graduation of their child) goes a long way and makes your relationship that much more meaningful beyond doing good work. It creates a bond and trust. Our industry is extremely competitive, and you’re not only competing with other small agencies like yourself, but also the big established ad agencies that have been around for years.

2. Building Relationships is Key 3. Quick To Fire

Move away from what’s not working or anything that is not sitting right with you Don’t let it linger That goes for employees or clients that you just don’t jive with The pain and agony are only prolonged after you “umm and ahh” your way through giving them multiple chances We are all about maintaining healthy relationships. Think about it like ripping off a band aid: it might sting a bit at first, but you’ve got to get it off so it can start to heal.

CEOMOM | 25

4. Go Balls Out – Legit.

Andrea Urioste, founding Partner and President of WonderIn Group, is a dynamic, award-winning, and passionate international marketing professional with over 20 years of agency and brand experience. She has spent the majority of her career working at start-ups, helping in the development of integrated marketing strategies for some of the world’s largest brands.

Charlotte White, is a serial entrepreneur, mother, and passionate yogi. Her career trajectory exploded when Charlotte left the big box agencies, BBDO and Grey, and took the leap into business ownership, co founding the award winning mission led marketing media agency Wonder Integrated Group. WonderIn has spent the better part of the last 10 years creating positive social impact by running client campaigns for Planned Parenthood, The Aspen Institute, the Healthy Teen Network and so much more.

SARAH DREW Talks Life After Grey’s Anatomy, Her Lifetime Holiday Movie, & Why Her Roles Are So Relatable

You may miss Sarah Drew as April on the long standing Shonda Rhimes drama, Grey’s Anatomy, but she has been busy since exiting the hit show as one half of the fan favorite TV couple, Japril. Drew recently starred on the Apple TV Plus series, Amber Brown, and is set to release her Lifetime holiday rom com, Reindeer Games Homecoming as part of a two picture deal with the network. We’ve watched Drew evolve as relatable and much loved characters, all while balancing motherhood and her diverse career as a producer, writer and actor. CEOMOM Magazine caught up with Drew to discuss the future of Japril, why relatability is integral to her work, and her family’s favorite holiday traditions.

Sarah is a mom, wife, daughter, sister and friend She’s an artist She is a passionate storyteller She’s creative and enthusiastic and curious. She works too hard and still has a hard time creating a healthy work/life balance but she’s very self aware so she’s working on that She is sensitive and emotional (enneagram 4 with an equally strong 3 wing) which means she cries a lot, but she considers those traits her greatest strengths as they make her good at what she does. Sarah is warm and welcoming and finds so much joy in hosting people. Sarah is activated when people go deep with her. She LOVES being with her family in her home. In another life, she would have loved to sing and dance on Broadway.

As career moms, we are so many things to so many people. Who is Sarah Drew to you?

”I love April. I felt like I got to play six different characters while playing her because of her evolution. She changed and grew so much. “

Watching Amber Brown with my kids has been the greatest gift of my career. They LOVED it. They would beg for another episode after each one ended. They would laugh and think. My son is approaching his tween years and kept saying “Mommy, this is SO relatable.” There really aren’t many things out there geared towards his age group so I love that Amber Brown is filling that gap. Getting to share something made for us all as a family unit with my kiddos is such a gift.

I was really excited to work with Bonnie Hunt. She wrote such an incredible script and I was immediately drawn to it because it was funny and warm and creative and unique. I loved the use of the animation and video diary monologues to really get in the head and heart of an 11 year old. I found that every page of the script had love and kindness just bursting out of it. All of these characters are human and they are doing their best to love each other well as they navigate big changes and hardships. It’s a beautiful and kind world that Bonnie Hunt created and I’m just thrilled to be a part of it!

I love April I felt like I got to play six different characters while playing her because of her evolution She changed and grew so much. There were so many pieces of her story that resonated with so many people. I hear from people all the time about how the death of Samuel helped them through their own infant loss I especially loved getting to play her crisis of faith story line. So many people have told me how much that impacted them as well I got to play a layered and nuanced person of faith in a compelling and very human way and I will always be so proud of the journey I was able to take with her.

One of your latest projects is the Apple TV Plus series, Amber Brown, which tells the story of a tween navigating life after her parents’ divorce. Variety says that the series fills the tween TV gap. What does it mean to you as a mom to be a part of a show that reflects the tween experience?
Other than its relatability, what attracted you to the Amber Brown series?
One of your most memorable roles is playing April on Grey’s Anatomy. What do you miss most about playing that role? Why do you think April has had the impact she's had on viewers?

I think at the end of season 14, after her big crisis of faith and then return to faith, I think she found herself in a new way She found her purpose and her calling and I think that now she is really living into her calling in a way that makes her feel alive and purposeful. I think she’s confident and more grounded because of that because of everything she has gone through.

Currently I’m really enjoying writing. When I’m fully in the writing mode and dialogue is just flowing out of me and onto the page, I feel like I’m being swept up into a creative experience that feels limitless and without boundaries. I like to WAY overwrite scenes because it just feels good. Implementing notes and cutting scenes down is a lot harder for me, but when I’m just sitting and writing, it’s exhilarating for me There’s more structure more expectation on me when I’m acting and producing I feel like I have to please other people and be excellent at all times when I’m in those roles With writing I can just say all the things and then go back and prune it into something that works But I don’t get to have that stage with acting and producing.

You played April for nine years. If there is a Jackson and April spin-off, walk us through the evolution of April. Who is she now? How has she changed?
As a writer, producer and actor, which role allows you to be the most free?

When fading Hollywood action star Chase Weston comes home for the holidays to help his pregnant sister, he’s roped into participating in his small town’s fundraising tradition Reindeer Games Homecoming. After joining his 15 year old nephew's team of teenagers, his main competition is his high school lab partner and one time crush, Mac Graves and her team of retired firefighters. Her father died a few years back and ever since then, she’s played the games in his place to honor her father’s memory. As the competition heats up, so do Mac and Chase’s feeling for one another and very soon, Chase isn’t just competing to win the games, he’s competing to win her heart as well. With hilarious set pieces and a cast of warm and colorful characters, Reindeer Games Homecoming takes the audience on an emotional and entertaining ride I cannot wait for everyone to see it I’m SO proud of it.

Elf. Also there’s a hilarious British comedy called “The Goes Wrong Show” that has three different Christmas specials that we have watched about a billion times. They are hilarious.

You signed a two-picture deal with Lifetime to write, produce and star in holiday movies. Your first film, Reindeer Games Homecoming will debut this holiday season. Tell us more about the story.

What are your favorite holiday traditions?

When my son was five, the only thing he asked for for Christmas was to BE Santa Clause, so we got him a Santa suit and invited the neighborhood kids over to decorate cookies. Then we decorated a red wagon and went around the block delivering the Christmas cookies. It’s become one of my favorite traditions. We now decorate ornaments and carol around the block as we deliver the ornaments. It’s like a reverse Halloween!

I also love Christmas Eve. We go to our Christmas Eve service with my sister in law’s family and then come home and eat a traditional cheese fondue that my husband makes that is SO good, and then we all open one present before bed.

ACCOUNTABILITY WHEN MAKING HEALTHY LIFESTYLE CHANGES CEOMOM | 36
5 TIPS FOR HAVING MORE

There are many benefits to living a healthy lifestyle and maintaining a physical fitness program According to the National Institutes of Health, exercising regularly can help control weight, reduce heart disease risks, help manage blood sugar and insulin levels, improve mental health and mood, strengthen bones and muscles, improve sleep, and more While most of us know how important it is, learning to hold ourselves accountable to stick with it is a challenge. When we master it, we will find that it leads to long term success.

"People often want a healthier lifestyle, but they need to know how to stick with it, which is the most difficult part," Jennifer Scherer, certified personal trainer and owner of Fredericksburg Fitness Studio "Accountability plays a big role in having a healthy lifestyle, so it's important to focus on that."

Accountability is often the missing link people need regarding their eating and exercise plans. Being accountable means that the person is willing to accept the responsibility of the decision to be healthier It's often easier to hold other people responsible for their actions than it is ourselves, which can lead us to abandon our exercise and nutrition goals quickly

HERE ARE 5 TIPS

FOR HAVING MORE ACCOUNTABILITY WHEN MAKING LIFESTYLE CHANGES:

Hire a personal trainer.

Having a personal trainer helps hold you accountable for the goals you set out to achieve These motivating fitness professionals are there to ensure success as long as you are willing to put in the work inside and outside of the sessions

Have a workout partner.

You can share workout ideas and recipes, do workouts together, and hold each other accountable. Asking a friend, significant other, or loved one to participate in a fitness journey together can be motivating, fun, and more successful than embarking on the journey alone.

Write it down. Put a note on your mirror. Whatever your reason for starting your journey or your goal, putting it somewhere for you to see every day will help encourage you to keep moving forward.

Whether the goal is to lose weight, run a marathon, or do a back flip, speak it into existence. Having everyone know your plan will help increase accountability. People will often check in to see how you are progressing with your goal, which is excellent for holding you accountable.

Remember why you started. Tell everyone.
Choose the hard right over the easy wrong.
CEOMOM | 38 1 3
We're not always going to be motivated to work towards our goals. Some days you just have to make the right choice, which can be challenging, over the easy option, which is usually the wrong one. Consistency and discipline go a long way when motivation slips. 5
4
2

Sometimes you can't give yourself a choice to do something or not Suppose you have a workout on the schedule, a meal you prepared you're not thrilled about eating, or anything you've prepped while in a motivated state In that case, you need to follow through even when unmotivated, and you'll see yourself getting closer and closer to your goals.

"We know how difficult it is to try and make healthy lifestyle changes on your own," added Scherer. "Our team has worked with many people, helping them to achieve their goals. Nobody has to do it on their own, and by getting assistance, there's a good chance that this will be the last time you start a new plan. From here on out, you will stick with a new lifestyle."

About The Potion Studio

The Potion Studio is breaking the marginalized space black/mixed/natural hair care usually falls into; The Potion Studio's products are for any and all mixed ethnicities, hair types and genders. Founder Aziza El Wanni came to the conclusion that a lot of natural haircare brands aren’t as inclusive or intersectional as they should be; textured hair is not tied to sexuality, race, nationality or skin color The Potion Studio is for everyone, but most definitely for everyone who is still on their natural hair self care journey, including Caucasian, mixed and Black hair types. The Potion Studio helps you take control of your self care, and embrace your natural beauty After Aziza's own journey with textured hair, much trial & error led her to find the most effective ingredients such as Coconut Oil, Shea Butter Mango Butter, Monoi Oil, Rose Oil, and more. All of our super powered products are infused with the highest quality, vegan friendly ingredients, free of sulphates, silicone, phthalates, PEGs, dyes, artificial fragrance, Parabens, & more.
