“Celebrating 90 years of making beer brands loved by millions of Ghanaians, proud of brewing some of the finest beers in Africa, is a major milestone. This has become even more important in the face of the pandemic - despite restrictions imposed in the spring of last year, we delivered strong double-digit growth in the last six months of 2020, and that growth continues as we speak,” he points out.
FUELLED BY A DREAM
The company holds a portfolio with a range of brands in the following categories: clear beer, stout, flavoured beer, non-alcoholic malt and imported brands, including two of the biggest global brands, Budweiser and Stella Artois. The clear beer group includes the country’s leading brand, the iconic CLUB Premium lager, and Eagle lager that has recently renewed its look and feel (“New handsome Look, same great taste”). The stout category is best represented by Eagle Extra Stout, a popular, fast-growing beer offered at an attractive price.
“Adding a bit of flavour, we have our much-loved Shandy, with only 2% alcohol - a super refreshing, preferred brand for those who want to stay in control while having a good time. Within the non-alcoholic category we offer a nutritious beverage, Beta Malt, enriched with vitamin B1, B2, B3, B5 and B6,” says Galo Rivera, adding that some innovations will be launched soon. He explained that the key factor that has pushed the business into its leading position is the company culture. “Dream, people and culture are our greatest strength. We are a company of owners, who take results personally and lead by example. The people in Accra Brewery are agile, always challenging the status quo, leading by example, not only managing the business but transforming it. We are fuelled by a dream, not a mission or vision a dream takes you beyond what you think is possible, challenging you to achieve the impossible.” “Our company leaders are what makes ABL a great company, a company that is continuously working to create a diverse

and inclusive environment that fosters opportunities for everyone to grow at the pace of their talents. Through our culture, we ensure we have the best people, and with the best people we can deliver the best beer,” he affirms. ABL has a number of training programmes in place for each department, run by each leader and supported at the global level to make sure employees stay engaged, continuously developing, not afraid of making mistakes on their journey. “Mistakes are a source of learning and I try to convey the following message to my team: we don’t lose - we either WIN or LEARN,” says Mr Rivera.
STANDING STRONG
As a responsible employer, the company is also very aware of its social role. Sustainability and corporate social responsibility are crucial to the company’s strategy, embodied in a number of widereaching initiatives to support young people, education and the health sector. An example is the Smart Drinking and Road Safety initiatives to further create awareness and educate consumers to drink responsibly. Last year, ABL started a partnership with Environment360 (E360) and Miniplast Limited, under which women waste pickers were employed to collect empty Beta Malt plastic bottles for recycling. E360 supervises the collection of the empty Beta Malt PET bottles which are weighed, recorded and valued to pay the waste pickers. The empty bottles are then transported to Miniplast Ltd. to be recycled and made into tables, chairs and bowls that are sold locally while the rest is exported.

Support to local communities has been intensified during the pandemic. The company provided 10,000 bottles of hand sanitiser to the Ghana Health Service to support front line workers, and hand sanitiser was also donated to the Adabraka Polyclinic, the Association of Ghana Industries and the Adabraka community. ABL has also strived to enforce the safety protocols, to help the economy to recover fast. While handling Covid-19 has been a challenge, the pandemic has intensified efforts to achieve internal improvements and highlighted the importance of partnerships. At times of limited personal contact, Vodafone Ghana was one of those that proved to be a key player in providing modern technologies for the delivery of reliable connectivity so that the business could keep running remotely. “Supported by our partners, we have learned to be agile, creative and insightful, and reflecting the shift in market preferences we have achieved an impressive business growth and zero job losses due to Covid-19,” Mr Rivera summarises the recent business performance. “That is something to build on in years to come. We stand strong, geared towards another 90 years, aiming to create more jobs, and positively impact our communities. There are great opportunities ahead and we will continue to support and actively participate in Ghana’s economic development.”
