In 2019 Qatar’s Hamad International Airport (HIA) served 38.79 million passengers, the most passengers to pass through the airport since it began operations in 2014. Even since 2018, the airport record 12.44% year-on-year growth in terms of passenger numbers. 2 | BUSINESS FOCUS MAGAZINE

s well as serving more customers, Hamad is also taking them to more places. In 2019 the airport added eight new passenger destinations to its global network, including Davao in the Philippines, Rabat in Morocco, Izmir in Turkey, Gaborone in Botswana, Langkawi in Malaysia, Mogadishu in Somalia, Lisbon in Portugal and Malta. That’s as well as the three new cargo destinations the airport now serves, Istanbul in Turkey, New York in the US and Almaty in Kazakhstan. Hamad International Airport is also seeing more flights, with fifteen of their airlines, including Kuwait

Airways, Salam Air, Philippine Airlines, Oman Air and Air India Express, increasing their weekly flight services from the airport, and two new airline partners, Air India and Tarco Aviation joining the airport. 232,917 aircraft movements were handled by Hamad International Airport in 2019, an increase of 5.57% on the previous year. In short 2019 was a year of incredible growth for the airport, as their Chief Operating Officer, Badr Mohammed Al Meer, has pointed out, “2019 has been a spectacular year for HIA, having broken our record for the greatest number of passengers ever served since
commencing our operations. It was also an exciting year for the airport as the gateway to some of the world’s biggest sporting events, including the IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019 and the FIFA Club World Cup Qatar 2019, which were successfully hosted by the State of Qatar.” In the face of this level of growth, Hamad International Airport has acknowledged that it is essential to expand to meet rising demand. This is why they have announced a multiphased airport expansion plan to build the airport’s operational capacity in preparation for the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

This expansion will take place in two major stages. First, there will be Phase A, during which construction work will be carried out to connect concourses D and E through a central concourse, increasing the airport’s annual passenger handling capacity to the point where it will be able to handle over 53 million passengers by 2022. Phase B, which will be completed after 2022, will involve extending concourses D and E to boost the airport’s annual passenger handling capacity to over 60 million. These extensions will be carried out alongside projects to construct a 10,000 square metre indoor tropical garden, a 268 square metre water feature, 11,720 square metres of landscaped retail and food court, and 9,000 square metres of Al Mourjan lounge. This project includes the installation of self-check-in and self-bag-drop kiosks as well as the recent introduction of ten automated security gates to the airport’s pre-immigration area, allowing passengers to scan their own boarding cards and proceed to immigration.

A COLLABORATIVE PROJECT
Of course, a project of this scale is not something that can be carried out alone, and Matar, the company managing and operating Hamad International Airport has already awarded five contracts to new partners who will assist with the expansion. A range of companies and joint ventures have been brought in to make the new vision of Hamad International Airport a reality. Last October a joint venture of Urbacon Trading & Contracting, Bahadir Construction and Tedeschia Construction Enterprises (UBT) was awarded the contract for the airport’s Western Taxiway & Stand Development Works, with work commencing in the fourth quarter of last year. These companies will increase the airport’s capacity with 39 extra aircraft stands.

Meanwhile, the joint venture made up of Midmac Contracting, TAV Tepe Akfen Investment Construction and Taisei Corporation (MTT) are collaborating to expand the airport’s passenger terminal, central concourse building and the early work on the expansion which began last November. MTT is set to construct a 140,000 square metre terminal building as well as a new transfer area which will reduce connection times and improve passengers’ experience. Another major part of the planned expansion is the airport’s remote transfer baggage facility (RTBF) handling systems and building projects, which were split into two different packages which are being handled by the Al Jaber Engineering Company and Beumer Doha, who are contracted for to supply and install the baggage handling system at the RTBF.

At the end of last year, Hamad International Airport went into more detail about the extensive

plans they have for the second phase of this project. These include a multi-level terminal facility covering over 85,000 square metres with its three levels and three mezzanine levels bringing the total floor space of the facility to roughly 323,000 square metres. Beyond the sheer size of the development, the terminal building will also be graded with four stars by the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) as well as a LEED Silver certificate. The airport’s 11,720 square metres landscaped retail, food and beverage space will feature integrated art and greenery among its retail and dining areas, using trees and plants from sustainable forests. This area will feature internal environmental conditions that are carefully monitored and controlled to suit the trees, with the help of a column-free, 85-metre grid shell roof made of performance glass that will control the light entering the airport. Above this space, the luxurious Al Mourjan will overlook the tropical garden, while passengers will also be able to enjoy amenities including gymnasiums, additional spas, business centres, restaurants and more. All of this goes towards not only expanding the capacity of Hamad International Airport but also its offering, creating a modern, pleasant experience for passengers. As Al Meer says, “Our expansion has been designed to seamlessly integrate with the existing terminal, allowing smooth passenger flow and improving the overall passenger experience by minimising travel distances for connections and providing clarity and intuitive wayfinding.”
