Spring Musical

Fiddler on the Roof The 1984 spring musical was Fiddler on the Roof. As usual, the Thespians produced an outstanding production. This production was the last for the seniors of the Class of '84. In addition to the superb acting and singing that was displayed in the performance, the stage crew did an excellent job with the set. The production was under the very capable direction of Mr. Page.

Our Town This year's fall play was Our Town. This play had a rather serious plot. It also was done without a lot of props and scenery; however, it was a fine production and one that the Thespians should be proud. Mr. Page directed the production.

Spectrum

'85 This year's version of Spectrum was a very entertaining show. Once again the mamas and papas participated as well as many students from Centennial with talents such as singing, dancing, and acting. The jazz band did another outstanding job playing between acts. Congratulations to everyone who made Spectrum '85 a success.

Miss Jingle Belle

Miss Jingle Belles The 1984 Jingle Belles Assembly was one of the best ever. The crowd was fired up, the band played super, and the Jingle Bells Court looked great. The candidates for Miss Jingle Belles and their escorts were: Molly Sloniger and Joel Ehlers, Niqui Beckrum and David Remmert, Jennifer Rust and Greg Stallmeyer, Kimberly Hambrick and Mark Lilly, Karen Speer and Brian Overman. The 1983 Miss Jingle Belles, Elana Hassel was escorted by Rich Sabey. The 1984 Miss Jingle Bells is . .. Molly Sloniger. Everyone was very excited and happy for Molly. Miss Jingle Bells and her Court worked at Country Fair Shopping Center helping Santa Claus during the Christmas Season.

Local News

News (niiz), n. report The 1984-85 school year was one of many surprises. The school itself got a new tone and public address system which the teachers feel sounds authoritative. The boys' football and basketball teams beat Central in regular season play at least once. As for football, there was no Homecoming Game. The Mattoon Greenwaves, the scheduled competition, teachers were on strike. Despite having no game, the assembly, crowning of the queen and dance went great!

The Fighting lllini football team was placed on probation in 1984 for illegal recruiting violations and were penalized by not being allowed to participate in a bowl game in 1984 and not being televised in 1985. Despite the sanctions the lllini finished with a respectable 7-win . 4-loss record. David Williams set a new Big Ten record, catching a remarkable 101 passes in eleven games.

The '84-'85 lllini Basketball team enjoyed a great season although their season was filled with many ups and downs. At the beginning of the season, the lllini were placed among the top 5 teams in the country. Juniors Bruce Douglas and Efrem Winters were tabbed pre-season All-Americans but disappointingly did not play up to their potential. The lllini did receive good news from basketball player Lowell Hamilton, the nation's top senior in high school according to the USA Today poll. He announced his intention to play for the Fighting lllini in '85. The lllini were then struck with some grave news that Ben Wilson, a Chicago prep star had been shot and killed by some teenage gang members. Last but not least, lllini senior center George Montgomery broke his foot in the middle of the Big-Ten season to shatter Illinois' hopes to win the Conference Championship.

Jeff Johnson Member of McDonald's All-American Band Jeff Johnson, a senior from Centennial, performed in the famed Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California as a member of the 1984 McDonald's All-American High School Band. The band is comprised of two outstanding high school musicians from each state and the District of Columbia, plus one member each from the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and, for the first time, Guam.

There is a total of 104 musicians in the band.

Under the direction of Dr. William Foster, director of bands at Florida A&M University, the McDonald's All-American High School Band made its 16th appearance in the nationally televised event, watched by millions of parade spectators and NBC-TV, CBS-TV and Metromedia network audiences. The All-American Band also performed in the Fiesta Bowl Parade on December 29th in Phoenix, Arizona.

The All-American Band program, sponsored by McDonald's restaurants, was created in 1967 to recognize and reward the achievements of exceptional student musicians. Congratulations to Jeff Johnson!

Mr. Henry Barnard

The Board of Education constantly deals with the many challenges facing the Unit 4 schools. School financing and changing enrollment patterns are examples of some of the decisions they handle annually.

Dr. Gleichman, Superintendent of Schools, heads the administration team. Along with his leadership is Mr. Henry Barnard who serves as the Assistant Superintendent. Mr. Robert Moore, Director of Staff-Pupil Personnel, has many responsibilities: the employment of academic and educational service personnel. Mr. John Thomure, Director of Curriculum, faces the many challenges in evaluating curriculum, and innovation of new curriculum. Acting Business Manager Don Overton handles the financial challenges facing the district.

Fine and Applied Arts is the name of the department made up of the Art, Music, and English departments.

Special activities of the Art department include the Art Club, the PTSA Art Purchase Award, and the Scholastic Art Award.

The Music department also has many special events, such as, community concerts, and the IHSA Competition. This past year, Jeff Johnson was chosen for the MacDonald's AllAmerican High School Band.

The English Department at Centennial offers a variety of literary experiences to students.

Students may explore the worlds of journalism, theater, and media, as well as the traditional areas of writing and literature.

Students of English are further encouraged to sharpen their communication skills through extra-curricular activities such as drama, newspaper, the literary magazine, the speech club, and, of course, the yearbook. Throughout the year students are given opportunities to enter essay contests sponsored by community, governmental, and professional organizations. In the past, Centennial essayists have won recognition from the Champaign Rotary and the American Legion.

The English department also is developing an honorary English society honoring senior English students with an A or A- average in English throughout high school.

Business Whether you plan to go to college or immediately enter the business world, business classes such as typing and business communications will help give you a head start.

More specialized classes in accounting, marketing and secretarial skills are also available to students interested in these areas.

This fall computers were installed in room 127. Data processing students now have the opportunity to get "hands on" experience using a computer.

Foreign Language

There are three modern foreign languages taught at Centennial: French, German, and Spanish.

Foreign language study offers students a challenge to learn to communicate in these languages and to learn how the people who speak these languages live.

The foreign language program is designed to develop competence in both oral and written aspects of the languages and also provides a good foundation for more intensive study during the college years. Almost one-half of the students at Centennial are studying one or more foreign languages this year.

Home Economics

Home Economics Home Economics offers many programs such as Interior Decorating and Fashion Merchandising, Child Development, Health Careers, Personal Development and Nutrition and Foods. Some of these programs have special events. For instance Child Development students conducted playgroups for preschool children. The students planned, organized and taught all of the activities with the preschool program. Another example of a special event is when the Interior Decorating students visited interior design centers in St. Louis.

Industrial Arts

The Industrial Arts program at Centennial High School provides the opportunity for students to learn about and have experiences with various industrial processes and materials. The courses taken by the students may be a part of their general education or may be prevocational if the sequence of courses for a particular area are taken. The vocational sequence provides students with job entry skills when they graduate.

Areas of instruction include courses in Drafting, Graphic Arts, Electricity-Electronics, Woodworking, Power, and Metalworking.

Industrial Arts students enter competitions against students from other schools within the state, help out the school by printing tickets, programs, and flyers, and complete other projects for the school.

Mathe01atics The math department offers a wide variety of courses. The courses are offered to students with a variety of goals including the person planning on attending technical school, college, or entering the work field upon graduation from high school.

The courses range from General Math to Calculus. These courses are designed to cover all areas of math and to prepare the students for the future. Special events include the annual math contest. .61

The program provides each student with an opportunity to assess his fitness and to develop skill and understanding that will enable him to enjoy sports and activities throughout life.

Science and Health Life Science, Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Microbiology, Anatomy and Physiology, Advanced Chemistry and Physics are the courses offered by the Science department.

A few of the activities involve the maintenance and grooming of the Centennial courtyard in the Environmental Science classes, dissection of frogs in the Biology classes, and dissection of fetal pigs in the Anatomy and Physiology classes.

Students are also able to participate in the Junior Engineering Technical Society Competition during the spring of the year.

Social Studies The Social Studies department interrelates the activities of mankind past and present, his history, his place, his mentality, his laws, and his problems. The required Social Studies classes at Centennial are Civics and U.S. History. Students may also choose from a wide variety of classes including World History, Contemporary History, American Government, Psychology, Economics, and Geography.

Each May the Social Studies department gives the prestigious U.S. History Essay Contest Award for the outstanding student essay.

Varsity Football

Varsity Football: ''Awesome'' 7-3-0 Nineteen eighty-four will long be remembered as the year of the Chargers. They finished with a 7-3-0 record, winning the Big 12 with a perfect 5-0 conference record. The Chargers' only regular season losses were to RiversideBrookfield, the season opener, and Normal.

At the end of the football season the Centennial Chargers were ranked one of the top ten Illinois teams in the Associated Press high school football poll.

Eight varsity Chargers were given AllConference honors. On offense - Chip Garth, John Fraser, John Lindgren, and Dan Brown. On denfese - Kirk Redfern, Steve Hope, and Kevin Kasper. Mark Williams was given honors as a kicker and Dan Brown was also given recognition for his punting abilities. Jeff Schumacher on defense and Melvin Blackmon on offense received honorable mention. Kirk Redfern and John Fraser were recognized on the All-State team as honorable mention.

For the first time in Centennial's history, the varsity football team advanced to the state play-offs. Although the Chargers fell to a tough Marion Catholic team 13-0, their extraordinary efforts made everyone proud to be a Charger.

Despite a 1-5 record, the freshman football team, under Coach Globe established themselves as a team that will have to be reckoned with in the upcoming years. The goal of the frosh Chargers was to develop their own skills and talents on the field, while learning the complicated system of plays that they will be using in future seasons. They exceeded this goal in many ways, not the least of which was allowing an average of under 13 points per game. Look for these young men to be upholding the winning Charger tradition for the next three years.

Coach Bryan's sophomore football team got off to a slow start this year. Lack of game experience led to the sophomores' 0-8 record.

Despite the record, it was not a totally discouraging season for these boys. They improved immensely as the season went on, developed a positive attitude toward the game, and gained valuable experience for next year as varsity players.

Varsity Volleyball The 1984 Centennial volleyball team had quite an interesting season. Achieving the honor of becoming twin-city champions while compiling a 6-10 record in conference and a 6-14 record overall, even with lots of injuries during the season.

First year head Coach Lynne Srull will welcome back a lot of talent next year with eight varsity players returning including two Sophomores. The eight varsity lettermen were Cathe Paulson, Brenda Bainter, Melissa Bowman, Samantha Stevens, Cindy Lawrence, Hoa Luu, Susan Buker, and Rachel Strauss.

Cathe Paulson was voted onto the Big 12 AllConference Team.

J.V. Tea01 Is l01pressive The J. V. volleyball team had two real standouts (Sophomores Mindy Harlan and Krista Peterson) who enjoyed the benefits of playing both junior varsity and varsity games. The J. V. squad did well in 1984, compiling a 9-6 record in conference and a 9-8 record overall. Only four freshmen were on the squad, leaving are nine players for varsity next year. This year's J.V. team was a very tightly-knit group and Coach Srull is hoping to carry their spirit to a very successful 1985 season.

Girls' Tennis The 1984 tennis team had a rough beginning, starting the new year without a head coach.

With the determination of the girls, they formed themselves into a team. Late in the season, Miss Guske came and served as their coach. Two underclassmen advanced to the State finals after long hours of practice and motivation, Lissy Thompson and Missy Summers. The record of 7-6 doesn't describe the true strength of the team; these girls are a winning team!

Boys Golf

Boys' Golf The golf team ended their season with a 6-5 record . Both David Hepler and Steve Poulson qualified for Sectional when they tied for fifth with 77's. This was a personal best for the two in competition. Coach Nelson feels it is a definite plus to use the Lincolnshire Fields as our home course, and the use of Par 3 for practice is also an advantage. He feels that working hard on the mental side of the player should show some improvement on our team in the future.

Girls Swim

Chargers Qualify Three for State Looking back on the 1984 Girls' Swim season, the efforts put out by individuals didn't reflect the 2-9 team record. All but two school records were broken this season. One of the biggest contributors to this area was freshman Kim Hucal who holds four individual and shares in two relay records.

The Chargers qualified three swimmers for state competition. Kim Hucal qualified in two events, the 100 backstroke and in the 50 freestyle finishing 4th in the backstroke. Senior Susan Shaughnessy and junior Sarah Karich both qualified in the diving competition, placing 6th and 8th respectively.

The 1984 Cross Country Team had only two seniors on the squad (Dave Remmert and Joel Ehlers). The other varsity runners were juniors Andy Worthington and Steve Schict, sophomores Spencer Nelson and Mark Warfield and freshman Scott Cinnamon, Andy Sikora, and Tom Metzinger.

Although their record was not impressive, they were a hard working team. Since the majority of them return in 1985, they should be a fine team next season.

There were only four seniors on this years team which finished 13-11 overall and 10-6 in conference play. Mark Lilly lead the team in field goal percentage and provided much of the Chargers' inside power. Other Seniors were Kevin Malone, Daron Barnes, and Mike Gray, who shared time at point and wing. The Chargers finished 3rd in conference and lost in overtime to Urbana at the Rantoul regional.

Much of the credit for the superb season of this year's Varsity basketball team should be given to Coach Carrodine.

After last year's "Dream Team" many people expected the Chargers to have a mediocre season at best this year. To their surprise, Coach Carrodine has molded much of last year's bench into one of the conference front runners.

Transfer student P.J. Bowman filled the void at point guard for the Chargers; he led the team in scoring this season and also set a single season record for freethrow accuracy with 80.9%. P.J. is lookA6

Sopho01ores Dedicated to Charger Ways The Sophomore basketball team had an excellent season this year. They finished with a 15-6 record, winning the Rantoul Sohpomore Tournament and for the first time participated in the Bradley Sophomore Tournament. Coach Preston Williams feels his team is fundamentally sound and has good overall size and quickness. "With their skills and dedication they should be a great asset to the Varsity next year."

Freshmen Look to the Future In their first year of organized basketball the freshman boys compiled a 16-5 record.

They placed 2nd in the Rantoul Freshman Tournament with a 2-1 record. Four members of this year's team spent most of the season practicing and playing with the sophomore team which added experience to the freshman line-up at game time. With these members on next year's Sophomore team, we can look forward to some really good basketball.

Varsity Girls' Basketball

Varsity Girls Win Conference The 1984-85 Varsity Girls' Basketball team is one of the best in the state. The team consists of two Seniors, four Juniors, and two Sophomores.

The girls are ranked 19th in the state, with a 23-3 overall record, and 1st in the Big 12 Conference with a 15-1 record. Coach Fairchild feels that this is the most in-depth team he has ever coached.

The main starters include Lisa Alexander, Cathe Paulson, Cindy Lawrence, Vikki Nicholson, and Katie Ramshaw. Julie Neuses, Rachel Strauss, and Angie Slaughter also enjoyed quite a bit of playing time. Cathe Paulson was the only girl in Centennial history to sign a full-ride scholarship. She signed with Illinois State University.

JVWorksfor Tomorrow The Junior Varsity girls' basketball team worked on building skills and "learning the ropes." The girls finished with 9 wins and 9 losses. The team is made up of nine sophomores, with a different starting line-up for every game. The J. V. practices every day from 3:30-5:30 with the Varsity girls' team.

The Freshman Girls got off to a slow start in their first of organized basketball. Although they finished their fundamental skills improved as the season progressed. There were a few bright spots for the freshmen , especially their 48-8 victory over Stephen Decatur. Varsity Coach Tim Fairchild said "It was a learning experience for the coaches and the girls." Coach Molly Mills was the freshman mentor. Coach Mills backed up Coach Fairchid's feelings and said, "A good time was had by all."

The Boys' Swim team finished with a 2-9 record this year. Since the team consisted mainly of underclassmen, they will have gained valuable experience for their upcoming years on the swim team. Jim Hill again had another sensational year. He is undefeated for two years in dual meets.

Jim finished 9th in state last year as a junior, and finished sixth his senior year.

Varsity Wrestling

Great Season for Wrestlers The Varsity wrestling team finished the dual season with a fine 12-2-1 record . The tournament record was also outstanding with a 5th place finish at Lockport; a 2nd place finish at Mahomet; 5th place finish at Normal-U High; and a 3rd place finish in Conference.

The wrestlers with individual championships were Chris Gilliam and Kevin Kasper.

Kevin was also Big 12 Conference Champion. John Cotner and Chris Gilliam won Regional Championships while the team finished third. Kevin Kasper, Chris Gilliam, and Vada Polit all qualified for the state tournament at the Assembly Hall.

15-0 The Junior Varsity Wrestling team again had an outstanding season posting a perfect 15-0 record. Three wrestlers won Freshmen-Sophomore Conference Championships. The Centennial Boys' Tennis team had a reorganizing season with a record of 4-8. They had seven letter winners and out of those seven 4 players will be returning for the next year season.

Girls and Boys Track

Girls' and Boys' Track Nineteen eighty-four marked the first year Coach Jones coached the girls' team. Although no meets were won, records were broken. Luanna Williams set the new record for the 100 meter dash, and Cindy Lawrence set a school record for the high jump. Cindy also placed sixth in the Girls' State Track meet. The 400 meter relay record was broken, and a new one set

by Colleen Farrell, Caprice Banks, Angle Slaughter, and Mary Beth Murphy.

The Nineteen Eighty-Four Charger Track team bad many extraordinary accomplishments. Senior Mike Bailey, Sophomore Erin Minor, Senior Steve Klaus, and Jerome Murphy combined together and set new records in the 800-meter and 400-meter relays. The new records stand at 44.2 seconds and 1:32.8 seconds. Senior teammate Brian Cox also did well in the 800meter and qualified for state action. And in the Frosb-Sopb.

Big 12 outdoor meet sophomore Andy Worthington won the 800-meter with a time of 2:06.5 seconds.

Varsity Baseball

Varsity Baseball The 1984 Varsity Baseball team didn't always live up to Coach Bryan's expectations. We looked unbeatable on paper, but on the field is where it counts, and we didn't always make things happen when we had to. The Chargers finished 12-12; most of the 12 losses came in the last inning. We couldn't put a team away in the last inning or even the last out. The Chargers are looking for a great season this spring with outstanding junior and senior talent.

Centinal Staff

Centinal Staff The Centinal, with a basic staff of ten students and almost forty reporters throughout the school, published eight issues this year. A very energetic staff gained valuable experience in the arts of photography, journalism, typesetting, pasting up and laying out the newspaper. The staff continued to mail issues to the parents as well as to local senior citizens' groups. They also exchanged newspapers with area high schools.

All in all, the Centinal enjoyed reporting student accomplishments, honors, and the events that took place during the year.

Junior Varsity Cheerleaders Again this year the freshman and the sophomore squads were joined to make up the J.V. squad. This squad cheers for the Junior Varsity basketball and football games as well as perform at the assemblies.

Varsity Cheerleaders

Varsity Cheerleaders Raising spirits high at Centennial are the Varsity Cheerleaders.

These girls, who are picked in the spring of the previous school year, put in hours of practicing during the summer, and attend camp.

They are the people responsible for cheering at games, making locker decorations, making banners for the cafeteria, and attending athletic banquets. They also take part in fund raising activities. Mrs. McCormick was their sponsor.

Chamber Choir Chamber Choir consists of sophomores, juniors, and seniors who audition in order to be part of the chamber choir. Swing Choir Swing Choir is composed of chosen sophomores, juniors, and seniors, who have auditioned. In addition to continued development of singing skills and group performances, swing choir stresses the use of choreography to enhance a musical performance.

Treble Choir Treble choir is open to students at Centennial with unchanged voices who are interested in learning more about singing in a choir.

Computer Club

Cooperative Education Cooperating Career Education is an on-the-job training program for students who wish to get a headstart in the world of work. This program provides the benefits of work training and experience in many career fields as well as a workoriented related class. In both the classroom and on-the-job phases of the program, the students learn many valuable basics which help them make wise career choices as well as become skilled, productive workers. In the spr¡ ing, the students honor their employers at an Employer Appreciation Banquet in April.

Future Secretaries Association

Future Problem Solvers The Future Problem Solving Bowl, sponsored by the Illinois Council for the Gifted, attracts hundreds of students annually to participate in finding solutions to problems which may confront people in the future.

The competition involves practice problems, a regional meet, a state bowl, and an international competition. The state and international levels involve both written and oral competitions. This year FPS consists of three teams the largest ever.

Half Nelsons The Half Nelsons is a group of girls who support and help the Centennial Wrestling T earn.

German Honor Society

French Honor Society The French Honor Society is an organization established for high school students by The American Association of Teachers of French. The purpose of the organization is to reward high scholastic achievement and to create an en¡ thusiasm for an understanding of the French culture. The French Honor Society has fund raising projects which keep them busy. The new members are initiated in the spring of each year.

Ger01an Honor Society The German Honor Society is an organization which honors students who have maintained a high grade average in their German studies for three consecutive semesters at Centennial. This year Jumer's Castle Lodge has donated Honor Society Rugby shirts and they will be competing against the other Foreign Language Honor Societies in a volleyball tournament. In the spring they plan on having a German "Fest" where they will be experiencing German specialty foods, along with their annual initiation banquet.

National Honor Society -

Spanish Honor Society

National Honor Society National Honor Society takes pride in sponsoring an annual bonfire which takes place the Thursday before Homecoming. At this well-attended event, students enjoy music, hot cocoa, and friendship. In order to pay for this and other events, the members diligently participate in a candy sales drive. A portion of the monies derived also pays for a picnic, a field trip, and induction expenses. The end of the year is celebrated with a formal induction of new members.

Spanish Honor Society The Spanish Honor Society is made up of students who exhibit excellence in Spanish as well as good grades and citizenship in other classes. The dual purpose of the organization is to recognize high achievement in Spanish and to promote an appreciation of Spanish culture. This year, active members sold candy bars to raise funds and went on a field trip to see a Latin-American dance troupe. A formal initiation ceremony is held at the end of each year for new members. Interact Interact is a school and community service organization sponsored by Rotary. International membership in the club is based on responsibility, achievement, and leadership. Interact co-sponsors the Freshman Dance and the Chili Supper. The group is responsible for one international relations project and one community service project each year.

lnterserve

Interserve lnterserve is a board of young ladies who do voluntary work in the communi¡ ty and within their school.

As members of the board, each girl must maintain a 3. 7 GPA. a pleasant personality, and she must have leadership qualities. Each girl must be able to interact with her peers as well as underclassmen. lnterserve has various obligations to the community, and they serve it well.

They sponsor an annual chili supper. work with the special olympics board in sponsoring a dance-a-thon near the end of each school year. help with the open houses for the 8th grade, and they usher on college night. Also, they work with the Champaign-Urbana Rotary Club along with Interact, who is spon¡ sored by the Rotarians. Moreover. they work with the PTSA in substance abuse forums, and they work with the Freshmen as Senior advisors.

Each year twenty-five young ladies are chosen by Centenniars faculty to represent their school to the best of their ability. Each year the community and school are proud of lnterserve's accomplishments.

Junior Leaders All sophomores interested in pursuing the Junior leadership program must file an application. On the basis of recommendations from the physical education staff and information on their applications, candidates are selected.

After selection all the candidates are chosen.

Lancers The Lancers are a part of the Marching Band. They drilled and practiced two hours daily with them. They go to competitions with the band, and they went as a squad themselves. They always add excitement to the football and basketball games with the halftime dances.

Marching Chargers

Marching Chargers The Marching Chargers went to four band competitions this year and have won several awards.

After the band's marching season was over, the band split into two separate bands. The symphonic band for the more advanced players and the concert band for the less experienced.

The two bands perform three concerts, a holiday concert, a winter concert, and a spring concert.

Another organization is the Jazz Band. This is a selected group that performs at civic events and Spectrum, as well as a concert in May.

Club The Speech T earn performed very well in the 1984-85 season.

Josephine Moncrief placed 2nd in Oratorical Declamation at the Big 12 Tourney. Josephine placed 1st in Oratorical Declamation at the Urbana Invitational and Kim Hambrick was awared a first in Original Oratory. Idea's Mirror- Tutor Society

Idea's Mirror At the end of each month, the members of Idea's Mirror, the school's literary magazine, meet to judge any poems or short stories submitted by Centennial students. The winning entries and other works are then published in a magazine at the 'end of the school year and sold by the club.

Tutor Society The Tutors Society was started at Centennial during the Fall '83 by students interested in helping others with their classes.

This year, tutors were offering their services in a wide variety of subject areas. The most popular were math, history, and foreign languages.

The students believe that tutoring is beneficial for others as well as for themselves. The tutors enjoy sharing their knowledge, experiences and study skills/habits with their peers. In addition, they have become more competent in the subjects they tutor.

The group has gotten off to a good start. In order to continue we will need well-qualified students each year who are willing to share their expertise with others.

Thespians

Thespians Thespian Playmakers, Troupe 1043, is an honorary high school theatre organization. It is a member of the international Thespian Society, an organization with chapters in every country of the free world. To become a member, a student must earn 10 points in theatre activity which is equivalent to 100 hours of work.

Thespian Playmakers are the producing company for the three major dramatic events of the school year: the Fall Play, Spectrum, and the Spring Musical. The 1984-85 theatre bill includes: Our Town, Spectrum '85 and Once Upon a Mattress.

Playmaker members attended the Illinois State Theatre Festival at the University of Illinois on January 3, 4, and 5, 1985 and saw performances of plays from other high schools and attended hundreds of workshops to increase their performance skills.

They also went on a spring tour to Chicago and saw a major theatrical pr'Oduction performed by top professionals.
