The Lively Ones 8 -

It's hard to imagine our school Without such great people as Mr. Dav1s, our pnncipal, Mr Gnggs, our assistant princi· pal, and our two deans, Mrs Storch, and Mr. Wiseman. Mr Davis faced such problems as the crowded halls due to the mcrease m students. This problem was solved by the "split day " Sen1ors and Juniors found themselves start· mg school at 8. 15, rather than 8 :25, and gett1ng out at an earlier time, 2:20. Sophomores and Freshmen came from 9:10tlll3•15. Mr Griggs, besides domg h1s normal duties, helped run the many elect1ons we had and helped organize the new activ1t1es that came about. Our deans, Mrs Storch and Mr. Wiseman, are best known for their ab1hty to keep students where they belong, m class . The biggest problem they faced this year was that of mak· mg sure Centennial's first four year high school was run smoothly, and we can all proudly say, "They d1d a great job."

Help and Understanding Make School Life Easier Mr. Davenport, Mr. Sexton, Mr. Berger, M1ss Watts, M1ss Moon, and Mrs Yates. These names became known to students. They are Centennial students' very own counselors . Help IS available when such problems as schedule conflicts, future careers, college plans, or personal problems anse. The counselors w1ll be those Individuals thanked 1n the future for such things as gettmg ACT and SAT scores and takmg care of scholorsh1ps and class rankÂˇ mg . Where would we all be m ten years Without our counÂˇ selors now? Mr Davenport persuades th1s student that Chem1stry 1sn' t all that bad M1ss Moon and Leah Freeman try to fmd some classes to f1t her schedule .

Building Towards the Future Classes such as auto mechan1cs, drafting, woodworkmg, and electncity, brought to students vocat1onal trainIng, knowledge of how an engine works, and what goes into the deslgnmg of a house. Electnc1ty students found how Important prec1sion was when w1res were jo1ned and the ju1ce finally turned on . Accurate measurements became essential once the dnllmg and hammenng started in woodworking . These classes will prove to be benefiCial the next t1me something goes wrong in your house.

Dare to Excel The students at Centenn1al pass from one level of math to the next w1th the help of Centennial's great math teachers. Th1s year many students came in for help before and after school. Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry and many others were offered. Words such as vectors, cosines, and tangents became everyday words . Centennial challenges those students who enJOY math outs1de of the classroom w1th the yearly trip to lllino1s State University for the state math conÂˇ test and s1m1lar test at Parkland. A B C -

Advanced Rhetonc, Amencan L1t., and Drama are some of the vanous classes the English department has to offer. Vocabulary tests, term papers, and book rev1ews were the causes of many students' headaches. The wide variety of classes keeps English mterest1ng. Freshmen were required to take the Freshman English class. Sophomores found themselves in either Bas1c Communications 1 or 2. Juniors fulfilled their requirements by choosing two semesters of any English class ava1lable. Sen1ors although not required to take English often found themselves in a class of the1r choice.

Foreign Language Develops Polyglots

Takmg a foreign language gives a student the opportunity to learn about the customs and the people of that country. It offers many experiences which other classes cannot such as the opportunity for German students to go to Germany. The days spent learning verb forms, memonzmg vocabulary, and listening to tapes in the lab, all seem to be worth it in the end.

For Every Question Answered, Ten More Arise. Many questions arose in the vanous sc1ence courses at Centennial. Most of these quest1ons, although ra1sing more at the time, were answered, some· times through experiments, or films, or even the good old text book. Students could choose classes like Bioi ogy, Chemistry, Anatomy, and Physics. Stu· dents were given the opportunity to go on the yearly tnp to Allerton Park, d1ssect frogs and fetal pigs. Many of the sc1ence classes weren't a requ1rement, but the fullness of the classes would fool anybody.

Around the World in Two Semesters Every student m Centenn1al discovers at least one social studies class before he graduates. W1th the addition of Freshmen, two such classes are requ1red . Although some students are delighted when their social stud1es requirements are through, many students go on to such classes as Contemporary History, World H1story and Soc1ology.

Unit Four School Board and District Administration The Un1t 4 Board of Educat1on consists of 7 elected men and women . These men and women devote long hours formulatmg education policies for the d1strict . They are not paid and spend much t1me studying educational ideas with the goal of provid 路 ing the best education poss1ble for the students of Un1t 4 . Dr. Marshall K Berner, Superintendent of the district, 1s responsible for carrymg out the pol1cies formulated by the Board of Educat1on . Dr. John Hillebrand, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction, had a challengmg year 1mplementmg new educational pro路 grams for the d1str1ct- includmg two 4 year high school programs and 3 m1ddle schools. Striders Outrun Competition Finish Record High at Peoria

With the help of first year Coach T1m Fairchild, a strong " Top 6 " con · s1st1ng of Tom Cloyd, Ray Baker, Scott Dworschak, Stu Ruch, Taylor White, and Freshman Mark W1enke led the Stnders to a 6 -6 record . But th1s record does not show the true story The team had no true standout, JUSt a hard workmg group of top 6 wh ich generally fm1shed w1th1n 30 seconds of each other (qu1te a feat in cross country) and th1s " Pack" f1mshed a school record high (26th) at the Peona Invitational, a meet which is second only to the state meet. Altogether this year's Stn · ders made an md1v1dual sport a team effort .

c Centennial ' s Volleyball team executed many d1fferent changes 1n the1r team th1s year. A Freshmen team was added; Coach N1na Brown took over the JOb of J.V. Coach so Coach Nancy Croy could devote her full attention to the vars1ty squad The volleyball season was moved more toward the start of school so the conflict of usmg the gym to pract1ce wouldn' t be a problem. The team put an all out effort forth to ach1eve a varsity record of 7-9 . The returnmg of many Freshmen, Sophomores and Jun1ors should benefit next year' s team enormously.

Th1s year' s varsity basketball team started out with three spectacular v1ctones, takmg the Turkey Tournament trophy. The first game of the tournament was agamst Rantoul. In the last second Ed Justus made a shot from center court. As we heard the final buzzer the ball slipped through the hoop, and the Chargers pulled away w1th a VIctory of 56-55. With rebounding from Andre Mitchell and the shooting from M1ke Hmton we took the second game tournament against Pon tiac. Aga1nst "rival" Urbana shooting from Jeff Hall and rebounding from Mike Marsh coupled with Urbana's star foulmg out, we took the trophy with a 77-54 v1ctory. In the regular season the team had a difficult time. After a losing streak the Chargers put it back together with a victory over Murphysboro at the Carbondale Holiday Tournament.

We've Got Spirit Varsity The varsity cheerleaders found that their JOb wasn't any easier with the addition of freshmen at the games. More people were present 1n the bleachers; therefore, the cheerleaders had to yell a little louder to reach these people . Their efforts pa1d off as they discovered that freshmen had sp1nt too. Due to a promising career in gymnastics, the school mascot, Theresa May, res1gned from her position half way through the year . Our new school mascot was Mary Rapier. The girls did a treme11dous job of keepmg everyone on his feet and yelling.

As the school body grew in number this year, so did the Lancer squad, composed of 21 pam pam and 3 flag g1rls. Under the supervision of Mrs. Willis the girls participated 1n the U of I Marching Festival and the Badgerette pam pam compet1t1on. The Lancers sold Tupperware, Chnstmas ornaÂˇ ments and calendars to help pay for their new uniforms and shiny poms. Performing at assemblies and games, the Lancers helped boost Charger sp1rit.

Centennial Band Student Practic1ng first and second hour during the cold football season 1s one example of the devot1on of the band members. The band played for us dunng the gamei at half times, and pep assemblies. Homecommg mums were sold among various other money mak1ng projects to help pay for their annual band tour. Under new director Dennis Ottmers, the band participated in a Marchmg Band contest at the U of I m wh1ch they came m fifth out of e1ghteen conÂˇ testants

Free Wheel1ng renews schoolmvolvement at the Sp1nt Event

As early as Student registration 1n the fall, Student Council members have had the1r hands full. Under the direction of Student Counc1l Pres1dent Dave Neuman. and sponsor George Valentme, the club earned out many new 1deas. The Council got school sp1nt off to a tremendous start w1th the Sp1nt Event. During Central Week such actiVIties as the Car Bash, Tw1t Day, and Hat Day, helped get us 1n the football mood. Homecoming brought new and different actiVIties such as the Homecoming reun1on of the past 10 Homecom1ng Queens at the pep assembly. The Council sponsored a 3-D movie, "The Creature from the Black Lagoon" on Halloween n1ght and also the mov1e "The Stmg," and a Woody Woodpecker cartoon. The Counc1l put forth a great deal of effort and helped make this year one to remember.

The foreign Language Honor Soc1et1es were founded to promote and encourage h1gh standards of achievement 1n the respective languages. Conservation Club

With a membership of 43 members, the Con servation Club dec1ded on a new club T-sh1rt. The sh1rts are helpmg to bring to the attention of oth ers the subject of Alaska, the last wilderness fron tier. Th1s IS a cnt1cal year m Alaska's statehood . Congress must decide the fate of 120 million acres m the Nat1onal interest by December 18, 1978. The1r 3 day winter campout was success· ful - that IS no one froze the night 1t h1t - 12°c, and no one fell off the cl iff while repellmg the cold .

The Class of '80 was quick to jump into the swing of things at Centennial. To finally be at Big "C" was a great challenge. The sophomores showed great enthusiasm and sp1nt at foot· ball games and in the making of their Homecoming float. The leap from sophomore to JUnior was a b1g move to make. New dec1sions to be made, PSAT, ACT, and SAT tests had to be taken and the class had to make money for Prom. The JUniors made the1r way toward Prom with such money· makmg proJects as the 25¢ candy cane sales for Chnstmas and the magazine sales. Both of these and endless bake sales were very successful. The Juniors displayed the1r f1ne creat1ve talent in the1r Homecommg float, which won a spectacular second place

Seniors Make the Final Steps As school began, the class of '78 started their last year at Centenn1al High School. It offered the opportun1t1es to go sle1ghmg at the1r favonte place whether 1t be good ol' Centennial Hill or Orchard Downs, or takmg advantage of the snow days to complete the1r term papers . Whether these days were spent sle1gh Âˇ ing and studying, or sleeping and shoveling; 1t certamly was a wmter long to be remembered!
