The building of our name begins with academics. It is the base on which everything else must be built. Academics is the unbroken ground waiting for the construction of our n¡ame to begin.

Impressions of the school to the ¡public is made through activities by student life. To make a strong, solid name, everyone works hard to build up our name to the public.

Providing something to do during the after school hours, sports charges up school spirit. And spirit is the most important ingredient for the building of our name.

When academics becomes boring, students turn to organizations for a refreshing ¡ breather. Through organizations a student may do his own thi!"g in the building of our name.

The student body works together to build up our name. The underclass creates the building blocks. They learn ingredients for making blocks strong and solid.

Teaching the underclass the ingredients for the blocks is a main responsibility of seniors.

They make the interlocking cement to connect the blocks together. This is how a strong, everlasting name is formed.

One of the many changes this year was a new principal, Mr. AI Davis. No matter what time of day it was, you could always find him walking the halls, showing interest in school affairs, and just plain doing a good job.

In sports, the crowd and team were out to win .

The school spirit was at its peak as the football players appeared in new jerseys bearing the school's name across the front.

Another change this year was the new library pass system. This system was created to have more supervision over the comings and goings of students at CHS.

BUILDING A NAME

Arl is Building in Every Way. In the same way that students create art projects, they create the ingredients for the building of our name. Starting from scratch, projects are manipulated into the final form. This finished form should satisfy the student because he has been able to put what he wants into the project. This is how our name will be built with students putting what they want into the name.

There Is More to Business Education Than Realized

First year typing students, usually very busy, take time out for a laugh.

Brian O'Neill's question is quickly and efficiently answered by the student teacher, Colette Childs.

When the field of Business Education comes up around school, most people automatically think of the original business courses.

Such as, typing I, shorthand, and maybe accounting. Many important courses, however, are being forgotten. Data Processing for one is quickly becoming a popular course. Not only do students learn to handle the key punch with ease, but the knowledge of a computer program could help them greatly in future years.

Another course which gained in interest was Business Law. This subject included many cases in which the students learned to handle, if they were to arise.

Many New Additions Were Made.

Many additions were added to this year's English department. Some of the new courses were speed reading, grammar and usage, radio and television production, college reading, and Afro American Literature. Mr. Joe Tomlinson, the head of the English department was quoted saying, "I believe it is a definite improvement over the previous English program.

Students now have a choice of courses that either they need or that is interesting to them." These new classes were semester courses so a student could have a wider range of studying in the English field .

Publishing a newspaper isn't all work as you can see, with the aid of the newspaper staff.

Cultures of Foreign Lands Give Inspiration to Students The cultures of many different countries are taught by our foreign language department. Hard work and determination help the students to adapt these different cultures to the building of our name. Each language has its own unique characteristics. Students are taught t hese characteristics and t hen they try to apply them to help make our name unique. By utilizing the many different cultures, students try to possibly make up a new idea, different yet similiar to these other ideas. This will enable our name to be built up into something unique from anything else.

Gooperalive Vocalional Educalional Training 91arls Early In lhe Work World Linda Payne is receiving training as an office worker in the Main, Counseling and Attendance offices.

Cooperative Vocational Education students gained on-the-job training at businesses in the community . . . During the Related Class, taught by a CVE coordinator, students developed skills related to their present or future career opportunities, and discussed actual work situations.

There was a coordinator ready to help every Centennial student gain experience in whatever occupation he had an interest in; this included health (H .O.), (D.E.), office (0.0), and service (S.S.). Students who wanted to become successful workers but perhaps were undecided about the occupational area in which they were interested, were helped to make career decisions in Cooperative Work Training (C.W.T.).

Almost strictly a department for guys, H,e Industrial Arts Department attempts to prepare its students for a job in the outside world. The hope of the department is tha1 after a student has completed one industria l arts course, he will have learned enough about that subject so he could go out and get a job applying what he. has "learned in that job. In this way, the Industrial Arts Department is more of a vocational course than academic. Vocational courses are just as important in the building of our name as the academic courses. last year, a Centennial student, Ralph Mendez, submitted the winning design for the Unit

The cheerful sound of harmonious voices or tuned in music greet the ears of all who happen to wander into the Music Department. It is here that students learn to build up their musical ability. All students are accepted to help make the great sounds

where. The formation of the sound begins with individuals who are musically inclined.

brought into a section . The sections help each student work together to produce a sound like one individual. Then the sections get together to produce the cheerful harmonious sound that the public hears at a concert. Thus through the working together of talented individuals, strong, firm, music has been made.

Strength and team work are built up in the Physical Education department. Students learn to work slowly to build up their strength. By starting at the bottom, students learn to increase their workload a little bit every day until they have reached their desired level of strength. This is the same kind of theory which should be applied in the building of our name.

By slowly strengthening each individual block to be strong enough to withstand anything, cur name will be strong also.

Successful teamwork is a must to build our name. The student body must work as one, to get the building accomplished. The Physical Education

This is very useful knowledge to know for the building of our name. One would not want to put two objects together which will either repel each other or not form a strong bond together. For the building of our name, there must be good connections and likable objects next to each other. Through the Science department, the basic structures of objects, the compositions of elements and the reactions of elements to one another is taught to the student body.

It took a long time before people realized who the American people were, but when they finally realized who we were they have never forgotten us. This is the same thing that is needed for our school.

Off the Job Proves

Sometimes students just think of faculty members as mean old teachers out to flunk them out of every course possible. But if students were ever to see the faculty outside of school they might get a different connotation of them.

Many times teachers are more than willing to be chaporenes at parties and dances, to help out at dinners or to buy whatever an organization is selling. Did anyone ever think about how many times a teacher is asked to buy something to help support a school organization? And the faculty is always around to help a student with any sort of problem he may have encountered. This school would really be nothing without its faculty to guide students during their three years of Centennial.

Two Men af Cenfennial Have New Responsibilities

Mr. AI Griggs finds that the paper work is one of the easier jobs behind the workings of CHS .

Two men at Centennial had new responsibilities this year. They are Mr. AI Davis, our new principal and Mr. AI Griggs, our new assistant principal. Both of these men have done a fine job in running the school this year. Mr. AI Davis learned what a big responsibility it is to run a school this size. Being an assistant principal has been a little bit different from working in the Physical Education department for Mr. A I Griggs. Both of these men try to attend as many school functions as they can . By doing this they lead the school in showing school spirit which is so important for the building of our name.

9chool Board Tackles Tough 9chool Problems One of the hardest jobs connected with Centennial is performed by the school board. They must decide the policies of the school district which invariably affects our school too. It is a hard job, for which no pay is received by the members. Most of them are on the board because they want to and are interested in the school district's welfare. Almost always under scrutiny by teachers, students and parents, the Superintendent, Dr. Marshall K. Berner, guides the board in those very hard decision-making policies.

Beginning of a Fine Dramafics Program The presence of a new drama director was evident at Centennial's Fall play, "You Can't Take It With You" this year.

With new actors mixed in with old actors, the combination came out just- right to make the play a big success. A second hour drama class taught by Mr. Keith Page did a lot of the publicity, the construction of the set and the lighting. The hard working hands of many Centennial students brought about the showing of our school's talent blended harmoniously together in the fall play. comings ever this year. During the week prior to the game, many activities went on . The sound of gum cracking, the sight of students from the fifties, and the overabundance of blue were all part of the Student Council organized activities devised to build up school spirit for the game.

A new tradition was hopefully started this year, a Homecoming parade. The parade commenced right after the assembly held sixth hour. In spite of the prevai ling drizzle, the band marched forth leading the floats, queen candidates and the student body's decorated cars. When the parade was over school spirit was radiating body.

We Wiped'Em Out The queen candidates were enclosed in a heart by the band at halftime in the homecoming game. To strains of "Love is Blue, " Homecoming queen Patti Borchers was crowned by last year ' s queen, Debbie Ward.

band, floats and homecoming court marched off the field around the track back into the stands.

On Saturday night the Chargers celebrated their overwhelming homecoming victory over Decatur Eisenhower at their homecoming dance. The theme "All Roads Lead Home" set the atmosphere of an old country road for the dance. Mid-way through the dance, Robbie Blair was crowned Homecoming King . With the Mud Cat Grant providing the entertainment for the dance, the 1972 Centennial Homecoming ended on a great note.

Throughout the school there are many activities which can be done by only one person alone. These activities do not require any sort of teamwork to get the job done. Winter sports is a good example of how a student goes all the way on his own to come out on top. Even though sports have a way of making a student stand out as an individual, a student could also be an individual because of his beliefs or his actions. Individualism can be lonely or it can be a lot of fun.

Two very important elections were held during the month of November. Miss Jingle Bells, M ia Matthews and swim queen, Sandy Hensen were elected to preside over two spectacular events .

Miss Jingle Bells greeted Santa Claus when he arrived in town at the Country Fair shopping center. Helping Santa greet all of the little children is her biggest duty. While on the other hand the swim queen performs her duties at the Charger Invitational, the biggest swim event of the year. It is her duty to hand out trophies and medals to the winners of each event. Both queens had girls to help them out.

9friders Cross Finish Line In Good 9hape Being alone is the main characteristic noticed in a strider. He must run the whole race by himself. He cannot run part of it and then expect someone else to finish it for him. This makes a strider a unique person. H~ is always striving to do better, something he must do on his own. Football players get the support of hundreds of fan~, cheerleaders and even a band. A strider on the other hand is lucky to get more than five brave souls to watch him run that endless road to victory. These unique group of guys need the support of everyone so that maybe the striders will stop feeling unwanted and alone and begin feeling like the necessary asset which he is to the school.

Fencing is a much neglected sport here at Centennial. There are very few people who will come to see the few home fencing meets.

Although the fencing program was started only a few years ago, the Centennial team has already proved to be tough competition for its opponents. If the fencing team keeps going in the same direction then they may finally receive the recognition which they deserve.

Building for Next Year An injury-plagued wrestling team had many problems this year. With the loss of star wrestlers at various meets of the year, the team did not do very well together. But there is a bright side to all of the problems the wrestling team suffered. All of the wrestlers learned a lot about character. Our team learned that it does not matter whether one wins or loses but if

you've done the best you can, that's what counts. With the small number of seniors on the team the wrestlers have spent a good part of this year building up the team for next year.

9PRING During the spring many sports events take place, baseball, golf, track, and tennis.

Because of our early deadline, the Centurion could not publish how well Centennial's teams did this year. All of the spring sports events require the student to be very good at the sport by himself. If he fails to hit a ball, there is no one behind him to hit it for him. Everything he does must be done by himself and not by anyone else. There is, however, some teamwork involved. The outcome of each individual's contest is added up to make up how well the team did together. For this reason, everyone should do his best so that his team will win the game or meet. In the spring there are many weather conditions which can bring practice to halt. This is why a spring sportsman must have a lot of courage and determination to go out for his spring sport.

short history, many outstanding voices and groups have been developed to enable some students to continue their musical career. This does not come easily to the students. A lot of time is spent during the after-school hours to get one's part right so that the whole ensemble will be more together. Sometimes small ensembles such as SA TB and SSAA are asked to perform at dinners and other similar occasions. Besides its many concerts, the choir puts on Varsity Show and plays an important role in the spring musical.

Rap Session was formed last year to help any

persons with

problems

to

solve

them

before the problem became out of hand. This year, because of the peace and harmony felt throughout the school, there has not been too much of a need for the Rap Session committee.

The only thing which the Rap Session has really done this year is to publish the "Inner School Blues." This paper is written for teachers, students, and parents. Its purpose is to tell its readers how things are in the school, how to improve things in the school, and how to keep things at a good level. A group of hard-working girls, the Centennial Guard, are present at every home swimming

meet.

These

girls help to time, to keep score, and in general, to help make sure that the meet runs smoothly. It is not an easy job because the girls must be accurate in everything they do. To help these girls

gain

experience

in

running

a

meet, they are asked to be present at an inter-squad meet. It does not matter too much if the girls are not accurate at this meet. But this is the only time they are allowed to be wrong.

From now on the swim team is really counting on the Guard to be right.

Even though the pressure is on them to be on their toes at all times, the Centennial Guard is a much needed addition for our swim meets.

This year's band has been a little different from the previous bands at Centennial. During the fall, the band participated in many marching band contests. This gave the band members an opportunity to perform at some nearby cities and to see some other bands march.

After this busy fall schedule, the band settled down to learning music for its first concert of the year, a mixture of classical and jazz music.

The Centennial FHA is revamping and forming a new club with a central theme "we care. " They are in search of a new name and new projects. During December, FHA earned money to buy needed items for less fortunate families. These families were recommended to the club by the school social worker. The club also designed and made charger emblems to be worn on the uniforms of the school fencing team.

Girls lnframurals Overrun Problems Girls receive only one opportunity to participate in any sort of sports activities through Girls lntramurals. The program started off very well during the first months of the school year, but very little went on during the winter months. This was due to the fact that the girls had no place to participate in any sort of winter sports activities.

But despite all of these problems, sportsminded girls are given an opportun ity to participate in many different sports at Centennial.

9enior Leaders Utilize Leadership Qualities Survivors of the Junior Leaders program last year are the girls who are given the opportunity to be Senior Leaders this year. These girls are a tremendous help to the girls P.E. teachers. They help the teacher with demonstrations, and in taking attendance, and sometimes the girls will even get an opportunity to teach the class. When these girls graduate, they will have learned the basic principles of several sports events, they will have developed good leadership qualities and they will have a good head start for a career in Physical Education.

The Lancers also had the opportunity of traveling with the band for competitions last fall. The Lancers consisted of thirteen ambitious girls this year.

They sported a new outfit of Columbia blue skirts, white blouses, and navy shrink tops, along with the traditional navy jumpers.

This year saw the formation of two new groups, the Wooly Bullies and the Grapplerettes. The Grapplerettes are a group of girls who help out at the wrestling meets this year.

While the yearbook staff members are busy slaving away to get the yearbook done, the business staff is worrying about getting ads for the yearbook. They are the ones who contact local businesses and ask them if they would like to buy an ad for our yearbook. If they do, then a staff member will visit him to see what kind of an ad he would like and how we can fit it into the yearbook. To try and get more ads in this year's yearbook, the business staff split up into two teams to see who could sell the most.

The winning team was to be treated to a steak dinner. The yearbook is thankful for the work which the Business staff has done.

Collecting Material, PuHing It Together, And Making It Fit/ Carole Rapier and Teresa Perucca pick out the pictures which will go onto the next layout.

The putting together of a yearbook is not as easy as some people may think it is. long hours are spent trying to find the right picture for a particular page, the right caption for it, and a theme which can be carried throughout the whole yearbook. With a smaller staff, this year's group has worked extremely hard to get this year' s yearbook out on time. It took a little while to get started, but when the staff finally did, no one could stop them. A system was worked out to get the job done faster and it worked surprisingly well. The staff just hopes that this year's yearbook will be as¡ good as the ones from the past.

About twenty-five senior girls were asked to serve on Senior Girls Council this year. This organization is mainly a girls' service club for the school. The council sponsored a Homecoming skit, many bake sales, an open gym, and the senior girls slumber party during the year. These activities have kept the girls busy doing things for the school. Beside doing all of this work for the school there have also been a few parties to give the girls a refreshing change.

a Good 9tarl Being the babies> of the bunch, the sophomore class has a lot to learn before they leave Centennial. The main job which their class officers undertake is to help get the class off onto the right foot. Now is the time for the Class of '75 to start raising money for Prom next year.

The officers help to organize any of the activities which the sophomore class will do together. Such activities include the decorating of the sophomore class hall, fund-raising projects, and the making of a Homecoming float.

The officers also help to prepare the sophomores for all of the trials and tribulations which they may encounter when they are juniors.

Underclass

New Horizons are Discovered by the Underclass Through the help of the seniors an underclassman can learn a lot. The senior has experienced many things. He can tell the underclassman what will work and what will not work. The underclassmen are taught the traditions of the school.

They are taught what they can do to make their three years at Centennial a most enjoyable time . But underclassmen are not just taught how to do things .

Sometimes they are the ones who teach the seniors s-ome things. For the most part, however, they learn many things while being an underclassman. And one of the things they learn is what it takes to build our name up strong and solid.

Do

Concentration is the key for Steve Gould to get his work done .

Always in the middle of everything, the junior class strives hard to let people know who they are. No longer the babies but not quite the kings, the juniors are with the inbetween.

They do, however, probably most of the work around the school. The preparation for prom is their biggest event of the year and always a fine job is done. Deciding whether to graduate early or to take all of the college tests are big choices which the juniors must make. During their junior year, students begin to make decisions that will affect the rest of their lives. With all of these things to do, it is a wonder that juniors have time to do anything else.

Juniors know enough about the school that they can help the sophomores with any problems they may encounter. But at the same time, the juniors still need the helping hand of the senior and sophomore classes. This makes them very essential for the building of our name.

Future plans are thought about a lot by the seniors . Since this is their last year of high school, seniors must think about what to do next year. Should I go to college, work, or just bum around? The decision that is made, w ill effect the rest of the student's life. But while seniors are making up their minds, they are also having fu¡n , too. Remembrances are important to Seniors. They have been through two years of high school and are presently completing the third .

Towards the end of that year, many seniors begin to look back on what has happened to them in high school. All the sports events, plays and parties are remembered as the good times. last minute cramming and studying are hopefully to be left behind. But what a senior really should be thinking about is the relevance of high school to him. The things that it has meant to him, the preparing it has given him for that big step into the outside world. Yes, the last year of high school is a year of remembering all the good and bad together and piecing it all together to help the seniors to push onward into the outside world.

If you enlist together for Armor, Artillery or Infantry, you can take basic training together. And we'll guarantee it, in wiriting, before you enlist.

We'll even go a step further. If you enlist together, we'll guarantee you and the guys your first 16-month tour of duty together. That is if you can all agree on one place. Hawaii, Panama, Alaska, the Far East and Europe are the choices.

You get to take basic and advanced training together in the States, which lasts about four months.

Then, after successfully completing the training, you're off for a minimum of 16 months wherever you choose.

You'll be assigned to the same unit, or to units in the I same general area.
