Transforming Grief at
Camp New Dawn Three years ago, our lives changed forever when my husband, Brian, died in a car accident. My two young children lost their father, I lost my best friend and partner of 17 years, along with all of our hopes for the future. We have been very fortunate to have been helped along on our grief and recovery journey by Compass Regional Hospice and Camp New Dawn. Now in its 24th year, Camp New Dawn (CND) is a four-day, three-night retreat held at Camp Pecometh, in Centreville. The retreat is designed to meet the needs of all ages and stages of grief, serving children and teens between the ages of four and 17, and their Pictured from left: Miles, Ann and Sven DeVilbiss families. At CND, which runs August 1820, campers attend therapeutic workshops, age-specific grief support groups, and may participate in supervised camp activities such as swimming, arts and crafts, and fishing. Miles, age 8, has attended camp for the last 3 years. “I liked when we threw the beach ball and whatever sentence it landed on you had to read it and answer the question.” From this exercise, Miles learned that his father “is always with us.” At camp “we learned how to share our feelings,” he told me. A mini retreat for children ages four to six is held on Monday, August 20. Sven, age 6, experienced Mini Camp in 2017. “I met new friends and got to talk about my Daddy,” he said. Camp New Dawn also includes an overnight adult and family retreat that begins on Sunday, August 19. Through grief support groups, therapeutic workshops and restorative activities, adults learn to navigate their own grief journey. The camp has taught me valuable coping skills, meditation techniques, and tools to effectively parent grieving children. The overnight family camp lets adults and children come together to learn skills that they can take home with them. Camp New Dawn would not be possible without the support of the amazing volunteers and donors. CND has been an important part of our grief journey. It has helped us connect to others as well as each other in new and meaningful ways as we forge a new path forward.

the lion’s den Ice Cream Parlor & Eatery 508 Railroad Avenue, Centreville | (443) 262-8016 Hours: 11 a.m. - 9 p.m. daily
Centreville welcomes The Lion’s Den, a new ice cream parlor and eatery at 508 Railroad Avenue. The Lion’s Den is family owned and operated by local Centreville residents, the Candella and Glowacki families. This ‘50s-themed restaurant provides great food, yummy sweets, and a family-friendly atmosphere both inside and out. The eatery is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. The inviting exterior of The Lion’s Den has a beautifully landscaped terrace with outdoor seating and lighting. There is ample parking around the restaurant and also a bicycle rack for the convenience of our community bicyclers. Enjoy eating in a beautiful outdoor terrace setting or choose to eat indoors where the ‘50s-themed restaurant has adopted the Queen Anne’s County High School colors to enrich the atmosphere with local ties. Long-time residents might remember the original Lion’s Den ice cream parlor on the same site in the late 1960s. Go through the front door to a comfortable dining room or book the party room in the back of the restaurant for special local and family events. The menu includes scooped and soft serve ice cream treats along with an array of your favorite childhood candies dating back to the Rock & Roll era of the ‘50s. If you want something more substantial, there will be many choices on the menu including hot and cold deli sandwiches featuring Boar’s Head cold cuts, Nathan’s hot dogs, french fries, chicken tenders, burgers, and more. Visit the Lion’s Den today!
