SUMMER CAMP 101 Summer has arrived! The days are longer, Icy Delight’s snowballs are plentiful, and homework is now a distant memory.

Make this the best summer ever and sign your kids up for summer camp. It’s not too late to get in on the fun, but you better move quickly. Summer camps are a great way for kids to develop new skills, build confidence, and forge lasting friendships. Centreville offers a variety of camps and activities to engage and inspire every child.

Queen Anne’s County Recreation offers eight weeks of traditional camp at Centreville Elementary and Centreville Middle schools. Each one-week camp is designed to provide enriching, structured leisure activities. A staff of experienced instructors and recreation leaders supply creative and carefully planned age appropriate activities in arts, crafts, sports, games, music and field trips.

The Gunston School and Queen Anne’s County Family YMCA partner to offer innovative summer camp programs.

YMCA Camp Gunston has taken full advantage of their 32-acre campus, and has created a broad range of athletic, recreational, artistic, and academic offerings. There are programs for children ranging from 3 ½ to 15-years-old.

Situated on the Chester River, Pecometh Camp & Retreat Ministries offers a variety of summer camps for kids completing Kindergarten through 11th grade. Camp Pecometh is a Christian Summer Camp program that offers 20 different week-long overnight programs, two half-week overnight programs, and two day camp programs. Each camp session is focused on fun and fellowship. They also offer a weekend Friends & Family Camp program to give the opportunity for everyone to experience a weekend of camp no matter how young or young-at-heart.

In addition to the traditional day camps, YMCA Camp Gunston and QAC Recreation offer a variety of sports camps.

Budding athletes may choose a general sports camp or select a camp for their sport of choice including soccer, volleyball, cheerleading, tennis, basketball, sailing, lacrosse, track and field, and martial arts.

If your camper is not interested in sports or traditional camps, all three camps also offer a variety specialty camps designed to inspire learning and creativity. With activities such as photography, mosaics, and animation, young artists can get creative, get messy and have fun. Outdoor enthusiasts can sign up for horseback riding, trailblazing, or aquatic adventures. Game lovers will find camps for Lego building, gaming, Minecraft or chess. Does your child have a discerning palate or enjoy cooking? Nurture their culinary talents through a pie baking, cooking, or home economics camp. Centreville camps offer a variety of art and science activities where kids can immerse themselves in a favorite activity or explore a new hobby. The variety of STEM camps may inspire future astronauts, veterinarians, chefs and engineers.

TAKE THE BITE OUT OF MOSQUITOS & TICKS THIS SUMMER MOSQUITOES - With summer rapidly approaching, we will be spending a good part of our day outdoors enjoying the warmth, the sunshine, and a multitude of summer activities. I recently spoke with Connie Ralph, RN, CEN, CD/EP CHN, program supervisor, for Queen Anne’s County Department of Health. This is some of the helpful and interesting information I gleaned from Connie during our meeting.

Summer clothing is designed for comfort, style, and to accommodate hot and humid days. Protecting yourself against mosquitoes and ticks calls for a slightly different approach when choosing your clothing. The CDC (Centers for Disease Control) has some very important suggestions that will help protect you from those nasty mosquito bites: • Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants.

• Treat clothing and gear with permethrin or wear permethrintreated items. (Do not apply permethrin directly on skin.

Always follow product instructions.)

• Eliminate standing water in and around your home.

• Sleep under a mosquito net when sleeping outdoors.

• Cover cribs and strollers with mosquito netting when outdoors.

• Use insect repellants registered with the Environmental Protection Agency and check for age restrictions on the use of repellants for children.

• Keep your gutters clear of debris.

The Zika virus and associated illness that has been in the news is spread primarily by mosquitoes in the Aedes family. There is no local transmission of Zika in most of the United States and none in Maryland. Positive lab tests on Marylanders have been travel associated with the exception of one that was sexually transmitted. There are still “unknowns” about Zika but we do know it is a potentially dangerous illness for unborn babies. People planning to have a family that are traveling to Zika areas are advised to talk to their healthcare providers for guidance.

Connie Ralph from the Queen Anne’s County Department of Health said that common symptoms of Zika develop within 2 to 12 days after a bite and include fever rash, joint pain, and red eyes (conjunctivitis). These symptoms can be treated with rest, fluids, and Tylenol to reduce fever and pain. Speak with your doctor if you have these symptoms after a mosquito bite. Go to the Maryland Department of Health & Mental Hygiene website for updated information regarding mosquito bites and the Zika virus - https://phpa.health.maryland.gov/pages/zika.aspx.

TICKS - While ticks can be a problem throughout the year, ticks are most troublesome from April through September.

You can help protect yourself against ticks by using repellents with 20 percent or more DEET, picaridin, or IR3535 on exposed skin. Always read product directions before using repellents. The use of repellent treated clothing can also be a helpful protective measure.

Some important precautions for finding and removing ticks after coming indoors are listed below: • Bathe or shower as soon as possible.

• Conduct a full-body check.

• Check children thoroughly— hair, under arms, on legs, etc.

• Remember to check your pets.

• Wash clothes with hot water.

The CDC provides detailed information on how to check your body for ticks and how to take care of your clothing after being exposed to ticks. Visit the CDC website at www.cdc.gov.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is also a primary source of information on the human diseases that are caused by ticks. Ticks carry pathogens that can cause human diseases such as Lyme, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF) and Erlichiosis; with Lyme (disease) being the most common one encountered in Maryland.

If you are interested in determining what kind of tick you have encountered, you can go online to http://mda. maryland.gov/plants-pests/Documents/tickid.pdf. Print out the form and complete the required information, following directions on mailing both the form and the tick to the Maryland Department of Agriculture for analysis.

Festivities include performances by Dell Foxx Company, the Marissa Muro Trio and the Guthrie Matthews Method plus a “Best Crab Cake” contest among Maryland restaurants. Free entry; tasting passes are $20 per person in advance or $25 day of. The 15, 30, 65, and 100 mile routes are scenic rides on wide-shouldered and back roads along the many rolling hills of Queen Anne’s County that include sweeping views of the Corsica and Chester rivers. Proceeds of the ride will benefit the student at Wye River Upper School. The fee is: $55 to $65 in advance; $75 day of event.
